What are the Business Achievement Awards (BAAs)? The BAAs are an aggressive, self-directed, results-based business and leadership program designed to complement academics while accelerating a student's leadership skills. The awards focus on the words surrounding the FBLA Crest: Service, Education and Progress. There is a heavy emphasis on education with integrated classroom projects. The BAAs are the easiest and most effective way of implementing FBLA into your classroom. Most FBLA members are already eligible for the Future Level. The individual recognition is a four-tiered program aligned with the FBLA-PBL Goals, National Business Education Association (NBEA) Standards and Career Clusters. Activities can be conducted all year long and count toward BAAs recognition. The program’s annual deadline is March 1 for the first three levels and April 25 for the America level. Activities completed after that time count toward the next year’s recognition. The BAAs have four distinct award levels – Future, Business, Leader and America. How do my students receive recognition through the BAAs? Each level receives National and State recognition. In addition to a lapel pin from the National Office for each level of recognition, the State provides the following additional recognition: The Future Level award winners will receive a certificate from the State Office. Business Level award winners will receive a certificate and a ribbon at the State Leadership Conference (SLC) and their name in the SLC program. Leader Level award winners will receive a certificate, ribbon and plaque at the SLC (awarded on stage) and their name in the SLC program. America Level award winners will receive a certificate, ribbon and plaque at the SLC (awarded on stage), their name in the SLC program and recognition at the National Leadership Conference. Can a student complete more than one level in a school year? Yes. Students are encouraged to complete as many levels as they can. Any activities completed may be carried over to the next school year. How do students track their progress in the BAAs? Advisers enroll their students and then the student receives login information. From that point on, the student is responsible for tracking their progress. The adviser simply signs off on the progress once it is complete. Our Chapter has been around a while but we’re just starting BAAs this year. Do past activities count? Yes! Many of the activities in BAAs are regular practices of Chapters. Returning members from previous years who have completed those assignments or activities may count those activities if the adviser approves them.

Page 6: 2017-18 NEW EVENTS 2017-18 MODIFICATIONS ... - Arizona FBLAarizonafbla.moonfruit.com/download/i/mark_dl/u... · Activity 13 - Communications/FBLA Organization and National Programs

Do you have to accomplish the levels in order? Yes. BAAs levels will only be awarded in their sequenced order but the activities that go with each level do not have to be completed in order. For example, attending a State event counts toward BAAs at the Leader Level. If a member is working on their Future Level they can record that they attended the State event toward the achievement for the Leader Level but they will not be able to receive recognition until the Future and Business Levels are completed. How are advisers using BAAs in the classroom and running FBLA? Advisers are using BAAs in a variety of ways to manage the Chapter, engage students in relevant business leadership experiences and add to the richness of the classroom/FBLA dynamics. Here are a few of the ways advisers are utilizing BAAs:

• All business educators go through each of their courses and include BAAs in their lesson plans as projects, assignments or in-class activities.

• BAAs activities are planned by Chapter Officers to be completed during

Chapter meetings and other Chapter activities.

• When Chapters attend conferences, they meet with their members to see which activities have been completed during the conference and integrate this experience with the accomplishments they are making toward the BAAs levels.

• When advisers have substitute teachers, the assignment for the day is for

students to work on their BAAs-related activities and projects.

• BAAs are being used as a pre-requisite for members to attend FBLA events, activities and special experiences.

• BAAs are being used as a requirement for any member that wants to

become a Chapter or State Officer.

• Members who have achieved higher levels of the BAAs are mentoring new members on how to accomplish their BAAs.

• Chapter Officers are regularly recognizing the achievement of members

on BAAs from new members who have started the program to members who have achieved different levels to highlighting outstanding projects in newsletters, websites and through school/chapter recognition.

CSAs’ hours are cumulative and build throughout an FBLA member's career. Recognition for the FBLA CSAs The CSAs’ Community Award winners receive a certificate of recognition, which the local chapter adviser prints when a CSA is submitted. Once an FBLA chapter has been established and has completed the necessary steps to be in good standing, the decision on which membership option to select should take place. There are two membership options to choose from Total Program Affiliation Membership or Individual Affiliation Membership. Option #1 – Total Program Affiliation Membership The Total Program Affiliation Membership Option allows all students who are enrolled in a Business, Information Technology and/or Media Education Program to be eligible for the benefits and opportunities of FBLA.

Total Program Affiliation Membership Benefits • Free tests for the FBLA Online Testing Tournament • All students are eligible to participate in all state sponsored FBLA

Arizona activities • All students will be eligible to participate in all nationally sponsored

FBLA Arizona activities • Student recognition awards and scholarships • Chapter recognition awards • Quarterly newsletters from FBLA state and national organizations • Chapter site visits from State Adviser, FBLA Arizona State Officers

and/or program supervisors • Student membership cards • Active website with resources and information that will enhance

student involvement • 10% off the total membership bill

Pricing The Total Program Affiliation Membership option pricing is based on the Business, Information Technology and/or Media program enrollment submitted during the previous school year. Enrollment numbers are determined by what your school submitted to the Arizona Department of Education/CTE Unit. The State Adviser will use the 100-day enrollment report to base pricing for the Total Program Affiliation Membership.

Example: 100-day enrollment from previous year = 67 students in BMAS 67 students x $20 fee per student = $1340 fee for Total Program Affiliation 10% off of total bill = $1206 amount for which you will be invoiced

Invoices will be emailed to you from FBLA Arizona and all payments need to be mailed to the state office. Advisers may add a student to their roster at any time after the initial registration for $20 per student.

Option #2 - Individual Affiliation Membership Option A chapter may choose to register only some of its students enrolled in an Business, Information Technology and/or Media program. With this option, a minimum of 12 students plus one adviser must be registered, unless the program enrollment is less than 12 in which the chapter will be charged for only the number of students registered. If enrollment for the total program is more than 12 but a teacher leader decides to only register 10 students, the chapter will be charged the minimum of 12 students. Individual Affiliation Membership Benefits

• All students are eligible to participate in all state-sponsored FBLA Arizona activities

• All students will be eligible to participate in all nationally-sponsored FBLA Arizona activities

• Student recognition awards and scholarships • Chapter recognition awards • Chapter site visits from State Adviser, FBLA Arizona State Officers and

program supervisors • Student membership cards • Active website with resources and information that will enhance student

involvement Pricing There is a 12 student minimum registration requirement for this option. Schools may add additional students to their original roster at any time after the initial registration for a fee of $20 per student.

Example: 12 members on roster

12 students x $20 each = $240

FBLA Arizona is excited to launch the 5th Annual Online Testing Tournament! This exciting opportunity allows FBLA members to test their knowledge, experience a collection of online tests and compete against other members in the state. Who: All Chapters and members are encouraged and invited to participate. The Online Testing Tournament is free for all members! What: The FBLA Online Testing Tournament encompasses some awesome opportunities. First, it’s online testing. During the two-and-a-half month tournament, students have the opportunity to take as many online tests as they would like. Second, it’s an individual competition! Each event will have winners—first place through fifth place. The winners will receive a certificate and the winners list will be published at the conclusion of the each round. Third, it’s a Chapter competition! The top three Chapters from each region will be recognized on stage at their respective Regional Conference. Additionally, the top three statewide Chapters will be recognized on stage at the State Leadership Conference in April. Top Chapters will be determined based on the point system below.

1st Place 5 points 2nd Place 4 points 3rd Place 3 points 4th Place 2 points 5th Place 1 point

Where: Online! For the Online Testing Tournament, the only requirement is that tests be taken in your school environment. We will follow the same proctor rules that we do for the State Leadership Conference. They may not be completed at home.

Testing: During the Online Testing Tournament, each and every test is taken as an individual – there are no collaborative or team events during the Online Testing Tournament. At the conclusion of the tournament, your adviser will receive your scores so that you determine which events you would like to compete in at the Regional and State Conferences. When: Registration will be accepted during the entire tournament. Testing will be open from 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. unless otherwise requested. The tournament will be open from October 2 – December 1, 2017. Results will be available sometime during the third week of December. Some FBLA events allow you to begin work on them right away. Below are the topics for events that allow for early preparation. Successful Chapters can turn these events into assignments for their business and IT classes. Students that enter these events have a greater chance at placing as these events typically receive the fewest entries. Refer to your new Chapter Management Handbook for additional information regarding the events and visit www.azfbla.org and click on “Resources” then “Competitive Events” for more information. 3-D ANIMATION Using 3-D animation, create an informational video on how to get a job. At minimum, the video must include information on the following components

• Where to find information on job openings • Writing a résumé and cover letter • Completing application forms • How to present yourself in a job interview • Tips for a successful job interview

BROADCAST JOURNALISM You or your team work for your local news station. You are being given the opportunity to write and present a 7-minute news broadcast on the weekend edition of the evening news. You must research, write and present the following stories:

• A story about your local high school's success at the FBLA State Leadership Conference and their preparations for NLC.

• A story that wraps up and highlights your local high school's track season. • A story about the ongoing theft of bicycles in your hometown.

BUSINESS ETHICS Research an ethical case related to the automobile industry and discuss why it happened, how it should be resolved and what could have prevented it. BUSINESS FINANCIAL PLAN You are planning to open a “fresh food” (i.e. prepared meals, ingredients to makes meals, natural foods, etc.) home delivery service in your community of 250,000 residents. Since it is a delivery service, there is room to expand your geographic delivery area. Your service will have a variety of delivery options to meet the needs of different types of customers (i.e. meat, vegetarian, vegan, family, couples, gluten-free, etc.). You will conduct business via an online ordering system, but you will lease an existing building that is currently zoned for your business venture in order to prepare the meals that will be delivered to customers. You will also need to purchase a delivery vehicle(s).

Page 24: 2017-18 NEW EVENTS 2017-18 MODIFICATIONS ... - Arizona FBLAarizonafbla.moonfruit.com/download/i/mark_dl/u... · Activity 13 - Communications/FBLA Organization and National Programs

Develop a financial plan that covers all aspects described. You will need to name your business. You must include plans for needed construction/renovation to the building, equipment that must be purchased, inventory for your launch date, hours of operation, staffing requirements and an advertising plan. You will also need to clearly identify your target market(s), product availability and delivery location(s). CODING AND PROGRAMMING Develop a database program to manage the issuance of books at a school library. Give the school a name. The program must be able to complete a minimum of the following tasks:

• Track student and teacher names with ability to enter/view/edit names. • Track the issuance of books for a student or teacher. • Manage different limits for the number of books that can be issued to a student

or teacher. • Manage the number of days that students and teachers can check out any book.

(Hint: Mostly like the number of days will differ for students and teachers). • Give each book a different ID. Also, each book of same name and same author

(but number of copies) will have different ID. • Generate/print weekly report to show books issued to whom and number of

days leading to the due date return. • Generate/print weekly report of detail of fines (when book is not returned on

time). COMPUTER GAME & SIMULATION PROGRAMMING A sandbox is a style of game in which minimal character limitations are placed on the gamer, allowing the gamer to roam and change a virtual world at will. In contrast to a progression-style game, a sandbox game emphasizes roaming and allows a gamer to select tasks. Instead of featuring segmented areas or numbered levels, a sandbox game usually occurs in a “world” to which the gamer has full access from start to finish. Create an original sandbox-style game that revolves around a year in the life of a typical FBLA member and the varied activities in which he/she can become involved in; such as competitive events, fundraising, community service, national membership programs, and national recognition programs. The game must:

• Run on a PC using Windows 7 or later • Be virus and malware free • Run solely by keyboard stroke • Qualify for a maximum ESRB rating of E10+

DIGITAL VIDEO PRODUCTION Create a promotional video that explains why your school board should support starting an FBLA chapter at your school.

Page 25: 2017-18 NEW EVENTS 2017-18 MODIFICATIONS ... - Arizona FBLAarizonafbla.moonfruit.com/download/i/mark_dl/u... · Activity 13 - Communications/FBLA Organization and National Programs

E-BUSINESS Develop an e-business website for your new “fresh food” (i.e. prepared meals, ingredients to make meals, natural foods, etc.) home delivery service for your community of 250,000 residents. Since it is a delivery service, there is room to expand your geographic delivery area. Give your business a name and a logo. Your service will have a variety of delivery options to meet the needs of different types of customers (i.e. meat, vegetarian, vegan, family, couples, gluten-free, etc.). The website should clearly identify the target market locations and its product availability. The website should allow customers to check availability of products, place and pay for orders online as a one-time customer, or become a member and set up plans for a calendar year. The site should also contain a contact page. EMERGING BUSINESS ISSUES Crowdsourcing is the process of obtaining needed services, ideas, content, or funding by soliciting contributions from a large group of people, particularly an online community. Crowdsourcing has become very popular for soliciting funding for business ventures or persons facing medical crises, for example. However, it is also being used by individuals to solicit funding that will aid them in purchasing material items such as a new car or television. Be prepared to argue the affirmative, that crowdsourcing is an effective way to raise money for a valid purpose; and be prepared to argue the negative, that crowdsourcing is ineffective because it can be used for personal gain. GRAPHIC DESIGN Create a digital magazine spread for the FBLA publication, Tomorrow’s Business Leader. You must include a cover; a feature article on an FBLA program; an interview with an educator, professional member, or sponsor; and a promotional announcement for the 2018 National Leadership Conference in Baltimore. INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS PRESENTATION Create a business presentation that revolves around the theme, "What is FBLA to me?" MOBILE APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT Develop an app to manage the issuance of books and to provide other information at a school library. Give the school a name. The app must be able to do or show the following:

• Allow students and teachers to reserve books. • Allow students and teachers to check out books. • Remind students and teachers when books are overdue. • Show a map of the school library.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT Develop a public service announcement that addresses the issue of student safety and protection with regard to cyber bullying.

Page 26: 2017-18 NEW EVENTS 2017-18 MODIFICATIONS ... - Arizona FBLAarizonafbla.moonfruit.com/download/i/mark_dl/u... · Activity 13 - Communications/FBLA Organization and National Programs

PUBLICATION DESIGN You have been hired to develop a publication portfolio for a new “fresh food” (i.e. prepared meals, ingredients to make meals, natural foods, etc.) home delivery service that will open soon in a community of about 250,000 residents. The business will be a delivery service. The business will have a variety of delivery options to meet the needs of different types of customers (i.e. meat, vegetarian, vegan, family, couples, gluten-free, etc.). The materials developed should clearly identify the target market and its products. Give the business a name. The portfolio should include a logo for the business, a poster to advertise the business, a business card and three additional promotional products. SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN Create a social media marketing campaign to create buzz surrounding healthy eating and the opening of your new “fresh food” (i.e. prepared meals, ingredients to make meals, natural foods, etc.) home delivery service that will open soon in a community of about 250,000 residents. The business will be a delivery service. The business will have a variety of delivery options to meet the needs of different types of customers (i.e. meat, vegetarian, vegan, family, couples, gluten-free, etc.).
