The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Sciences. The year 1964 was an important landmark in the history of the Institute, when it was declared Deemed to be a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956.Since its inception, the Vision of the Institute has been to ensure excellence in higher educa-tion that continually responds to changing social realities through the development and appli-cation of knowledge, towards creating a people-centred, ecologically sustainable and just soci-ety that promotes and protects dignity, equality, social justice and human rights for all. TISS is a unique institution that brings together high-quality scholars and practitioners from Social, Economic, Political, Physical, Habitat, Engineering, Health and Environmental Sciences to co-create teaching and research programmes to address the most critical current and emerg-ing issues of the nation.Over the years, TISS has made consistent contributions to civil society and the development sector through its education, research, field action and extension. The Institute has imparted education and trained generations of social work, management and development professionals. Today, the TISS has earned recognition as an institution of repute from di�erent Ministries of Government of India, State Governments, International agencies such as The United Nations, and Non-Government sectors – both national and international. A high degree of freedom, and autonomy shape the positive work ethos and creativity in the Institute facilitating strong linkages between education, research, field action and dissemination. In the 3rd cycle of assessment held in February 2016, The National Assessment and Accredi-tation Council (NAAC) rated TISS with a score of 3.89 out of 4.00, the second highest score among universities accredited thus far. In earlier rounds, NAAC awarded a 5-star rating to the Institute in 2002, and re-accredited the Institute with an ‘A’ grade in 2010.

professionals and empowers them to find sustainable solutions to people's problems, social issues and social transformation.

The School of Habitat Studies was established in 2006 with the objective to address the social, envi-ronment, economic and technical aspects of habitat evolution. The school o�ers unique programmes with curriculums designed to inculcate among the students values critical to the cause of humanity. At the same time it nurtures highly able professionals capable of decoding the com-plexities of habitat studies relevant to ground realities currently faced by policy makers, implement-ers and above all the inhabitants.

It gives me immense pleasure and pride to present the 2017−2019 batch of M.A./M.Sc. in Climate Change and Sustainability Studies, Regulatory Governance, Urban Policy and Governance and Water Policy and Governance of the School of Habitat Studies of TISS Mumbai through this Place-ment Brochure. The School of Habitat Studies was established as the sixth school at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai in the year 2006. The key idea guiding the school’s activi-ties is to create inter-disciplinary knowledge that addresses the complex and ever-changing nature of policy issues in the context of the Global South.

The Centres draw from the field of habitat studies, governance, economics, environ-mental science, the social sciences, engineering, architecture, and management to provide cross-disciplinary insights to the students. The agenda is to create, disseminate and apply knowledge and skills to the planning, design, development, management and governance of better habitats for humanity.

It is with great pride that we present to you the students of the batch 2017-19 pursuing their master’s under the school of habitat studies, Tata institute of social sciences.The School of Habitat Studies was established in 2006 with the objective of training professionals in the fields of research, planning, development, regulation and governance of human settlements. Our students undergo a rigorous admission procedure and only the most competent minds are selected to

school are designed in a manner that takes students on a meticulous journey of learning. Since the batches consist of students from diverse educational backgrounds, in order to bring them all onto a level filed, the first year of teaching entails a Foundation course in basic Sociology, Development Economics and History and them at the school level by engaging the students in courses like Quali-tative and Quantitative Research, Public Policy and Governance with the students being given enough space to understand these subjects from the perspectives of their course.Once the foundations have been set in the first semester, the next two semesters, in each of the course, take a more focussed approach, the subjects being more course specific with the students drawing lessons from an experienced and diverse faculty from within the school and outside. The classroom learning is supplemented by continuous field modules where the students are placed on ground and avail the opportunity to apply their learning in real world scenarios. In the third semester, the students start working on their dissertation proposals with the help of the faculty. Through discussions, they are required to formulate their research questions and the methodology of their research which they undertake over the final semester.

The selection of the students takes place through a common enterance examination. TISSNET which is an online MCQ test. The shortlisted candidates are then made to write Pre-Interview Test (PIT) where they answer questions pertaining to the course they have opted. This is followed by Personal Interview (PI) session conducted by faculties of respective centers. Thus, utmost care and precision goes in the selection of the right mix of candidates for a particular course through a well structured procedure.

The two-year transdisciplinary program ‘Masters in Climate Change and Sustainability Studies’ was brought in as an initiative of the School of Habitat Studies on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Earth Summit held at Rio. The department consists of experts from the field of Science and Technology, and Social Sciences who bring together the complex subject of Climate Change to be taken further for National and International action. It is actively involved in Climate Change Research and believes in representing the notions of Equity and Climate Justice in the global discourse of Climate Action. In the context of sustainability, including climate change, the Centre focuses on the search for paradigms that do not limit fundamental human capabilities and provide a future that is not limited by want, deprivation or scarcity. The Centre recognizes the intersection of the Natural and the Social in the study of Climate Change and Sustainability, and urges the devel-opment of a unified view of work that is reflected in Research, Teaching and Pedagogy. The centre for Climate Change is also one of the 9 partnering institutions for the CAPSEM (CAPacity Build-ing in Sustainability and Environmental Management) project funded by EU-Erasmus+.

The program attunes students to the study of various subjects like Climate Science, Energy Studies, Policy, Negotiations, Economics, Modelling, Sociology and Theories of Development among others. The department hosts the Annual International Climate Change Conference which brings together research-ers, organisations and corporates to discuss the current state of Climate Action. This was previously funded by Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung and is currently supported by the Department of Science and Tech-nology (DST), Government of India. The annual conference provides a platform for national and internat-

litative

ional researchers, scholars, practitioners, policy makers and students to present their findings while also contributing to the deliberations and discussions on climate change policy both nationally and interna-tionally. Biannually, it conducts workshops on topics of Climate Change for the DST and is currently working on assessing the Socio-Economic and Environmental Impact of Konkan Railway for 3ie – Inter-national Initiative for Impact Evaluation.

REGULATORYGOVERNANCEThe Masters in Regulatory Governance is a multi-disciplinary programme, the objective of which is to develop a cadre of professionals—who are economically and socially responsible, environmentally-conscious, as well as, capable of taking on board critical social dimensions such as equity, and sustainability concerns — in the evolving field of regulatory governance.

It aims at building skills of students in a range of regulatory tools, provides a comprehensive understanding of contemporary regulation theory, opportunity to learn practical tools of regulatory processes from experts in the field, and emerging regulatory practice models. This equips the students with the ability to e�ectively engage with regulatory activities and processes pertaining to regulatory governance including those involving interventions and advocacy.

The Master of Arts / Master of Sciences in Water Policy and Governance, developed and administered by the Centre for Water Policy, Regulation, and Governance, is aimed at preparing policy professionals with a comprehensive understanding of factors, processes,

Winter InstituteThe Winter Institute, a full-fledged 3 credit course in the academic calendar of the Masters in Urban Policy and Governance program of the School of Habitat Studies at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. It is conducted as a continuous module of approximately 2 weeks’ duration, involving immersion in a community and location. Over the two weeks, nineteen studentsengaged in an exploration of Smart Roads constructed in the Aundh-Baner - Bal -ewadi Area, Pune under Smart City Miss- ion. Surveys were conducted to understand

regarding this trasformation of normal roads into Smart Roads. The students also interacted with community organisations, activists, researchers, street vendors and leaders of their associations, resident welfare organisations and policymakers. The Winter Institute ended with a mini public which was organised to prepare citizens’ manifesto. The work done by the students was produced as a series of photo essays, podcasts, interviews & blogs through the rest of the year and also a presentation to the CEO of the Pune Smart City Devel-opment Corporation.
