OBJECTIVES OF THE FESTIVAL
(A) TO HELP THE INDVIDUAL OR GROUP TO LEARN HOW TO PREPARE FOR
A PERFORMANCE AT A FINISHED LEVEL.
(B) TO HELP THE COMPETITOR TO ACQUIRE SELF-CONFIDENCE BY PLAYING
BEFORE AN AUDIENCE
(C) TO GIVE THE COMPETITOR THE BENEFIT OF EXPERT CRITICISM FROM AN
UNBIASED ADJUDICATOR.
(D) TO BROADEN THE MUSICAL HORIZON AND SPORTING INSTINCT OF THE
COMPETITOR IN COMPETITION.
(E) TO PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF STUDENTS
TO PARTICIPATE.
(F) TO RAISE THE STANDARD OF MUSIC IN THE COMMUNITY.
RULES
MUSIC FESTIVAL COMMITTEE:
Any questions not dealt with in these rules shall be referred to the Music Festival Committee
whose decision on such matters shall be final and binding on all concerned.
Any competitor may be called upon to perform in the Awards Concert. Performers are
chosen by the Music Festival Committee based on balance and audience appeal and not
necessarily the highest mark.
Neither food nor drinks are allowed on the premises.
Cameras and videos or tape recorders will not be allowed in the hall during any
competitive performance. They will be allowed at the Awards Concert only.
5
ELIGIBILITY:
1. The age and grade of the pupil will be that of each competitor on January 1, 2017.
2. Competitors may be graded up, but cannot compete in groups below their age or
Competitors may enter in one class only in each section.
3. Any student competing in a group may not enter any other group in the same class number
4. Competitors must not play the same piece in different entries. For example, the same piece
must not be played in Sonatina Class and also in Concert Group
5. JUNIOR Students are considered Conservatory Grade One to Seven.
SENIOR Students are Conservatory Grade Eight to A. R.C.T.
TEST PIECES:
6. All Piano and Vocal Solos (Hymn Section excepted) must be memorized.
Marks will be deducted for the use of sheet music during the performance. Anyone
using sheet music will not place in the top three positions.
7. Where a specified edition of a test piece is indicated in the Syllabus, a copy
thereof will be presented to the Adjudicator. Competitors should not use any
other edition. WHERE NO PARTICULAR EDITION IS SPECIFIED, any
standard edition may be used. The student MUST LOAN this particular
edition to the Adjudicator immediately prior to their performance. NO PHOTOCOPIED MUSIC MAY BE USED. Anyone presenting photocopied
music or Choral Speaking pieces to the adjudicator can be disqualified by the adjudicator
and will not be allowed to perform.
8. No repeats are to be performed except D. S. & D. C. in all test pieces, or allowed
as stated in the syllabus.
QUICK STUDY:
9. This class is designed to test a pupil’s ability to learn a piece in a short period of time.
Memorization is not required.
10. Music for Quick Study Classes may be obtained at the admission desk in the foyer of
the Church Hall 48 hours prior to the performance.
PROGRAM PROCEDURE:
11. When an accompanist is required, it is the responsibility of the performer to
provide his/her own.
12. Practicing is not allowed on auditorium pianos.
13. Competitors must be in the Hall at least 15 minutes before the time set
for their class.

COMPLAINTS AND PROTESTS:
15. All complaints or protests must be addressed in writing to the Music Festival
Committee and must be accompanied by an amount equal to the entry fee for the class
protested.
CONDITIONS GOVERNING AWARDS
FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD PLACE:
1. A Provided a mark of 80% or over has been attained;
First place will be awarded a ribbon, certificate and seal.
B Second place will be awarded a ribbon, certificate and seal.
C Third place will be awarded a ribbon, certificate and seal.
2. The adjudicator’s decision will be final and binding.
3. In the event of a tie, the award winner will be declared by the committee after consideration
of all factors including: senior student, average mark and adjudicator’s recommendations.

Vocal Adjudicator
GLORIA JEAN NAGY
Gloria Jean Nagy studied voice, piano and viola in Canada (Brantford, Toronto, London and Banff) and at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, Hungary. Founding singer in the duo Cantabile (1986-2017) with numerous Canadian premiere performances. Soloist with numerous orchestras and choral groups and choral director to nine groups in the Ottawa area at various times in the last 28 years including four Savoy G & S shows with orchestra recently. She holds a Master of Music in Literature and Performance (Voice) from the University of Western Ontario and has been a vocal instructor at Carleton University and for the Ottawa-Carleton District Board of Education. She has appeared in numerous operatic productions and maintains a busy private vocal studio. She has frequently been heard in concert as a vocalist, accompanist and choral conductor and tours Canada as both a vocal\ choral adjudicator and Conservatory examiner. She has been broadcast many times by CBC Radio, Societé Radio Canada and Rogers Cablevision and has delighted audiences in Canada, Hungary, Spain and France. Professor Nagy is an active administrator for local chapters of ORMTA (past president 2001-2003), NATS and EOFCC and has been the musical director of the last three Savoy Society of Ottawa`s productions. The offshoot called Savoyards in Song will present Oceans of Harmony on April 30, 2017 at Cityview United in Ottawa. Professor Nagy has recorded two CD’s with pianist Dr. Elaine Keillor “The Music of Mary Gardiner” in 2002 and “Musique: Songs for Parlour and Stage” (2006) and published “A Singer’s Overview of Canadian Contemporary Vocal Literature” which is available from CMC in Toronto. In 2009, Ms. Nagy was named ORMTA ORB Special teacher. Gloria Jean is also the artistic director of the Jewish choir Musica Ebraica since 2013 and their presentation will be May 14, 2017 at Temple Aggudathon 1440 Coldrey Ave in Ottawa. www.gloriajeannagy.com

Piano Adjudicator
AMY BOYES
Amy Boyes holds Associate Diplomas (ARCT) in Piano Performance and Teaching from the
Royal Conservatory of Music and a Licentiate Diploma (LTCL) from Trinity College (UK) in
Piano Recital. She studied at Brandon University with Alexander Tselyakov, receiving a
Bachelor in Music in Piano Honours and at the University of Alberta with Janet Scott Hoyt,
receiving a Master in Music in Piano Pedagogy.
While a graduate student at the University of Alberta, Amy was the principal instructor for
the class "Fundamental Keyboard Skills" for two years. Amy's graduate research topics
included identifying student personality types and learning styles. Amy has presented the
resulting paper "Strong Connections" to the Edmonton Branch of the Alberta Registered
Music Teachers (ARTMA), the Ottawa Region Branch of the Ontario Registered Music
Teachers (ORMTA), and at the Music Teachers' National Association (MTNA) Conference in
New York City in 2012. The paper was published in February 2013 in the MTNA E-Journal.
Amy is currently Vice President for ORMTA Ottawa Region Branch and is a member of the
Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators' Association. Since 2012, she has adjudicated music
festivals throughout Eastern Canada (in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; the Canadian
Music Showcase in Ottawa; and in Cornwall, London, Kingston, Stirling, Brockville, and
Hearst ON) and in Manitoba (Manitou, MB).
Amy maintains a busy teaching schedule and her students are regularly featured in events
throughout Ottawa.

The winners will be decided on a basis of marks achieved and adjudicator’s recommendations and the decisions will be final.

17. The Karl Fick Memorial Scholarship (Vocal)
The Karl Fick Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007 by The Ottawa Valley Music
Festival in loving memory of Karl Wesley Fick, a founding member of the OVMF Chorus.
This $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a participant in the Renfrew Rotary Music
Festival who is a minimum of 12 years of age and has completed Grade 6 to ARCT. It is
designed to recognize the promising vocal student who has put forward an outstanding effort
and who best demonstrates exceptional musicianship and dedication to his/her studies, and is
intended to cover expenses for continuing studies, professional tutorial fees, meals, etc. The
participant must be registered in at least three vocal solo categories as well as sight reading.
Demonstration of versatility by participation in ensemble singing and/or any piano category
will be given additional consideration. This award is not necessarily mark related and the
recipient is selected at the discretion of the adjudicator.
