Members of the Kentucky Concrete Association,
My time as a member and as president of the Kentucky Concrete Association has not been quite what I had expected when I moved here 10 years ago. Having grown up a “Yankee,” my perception of the area south of the river was nothing like the reali-ty I have experienced. It truly has been an honor to be surrounded by such good hard-working people.
While I don’t have a pedigree filled with concrete experi-ence, I grew up on a dairy farm milking cows, baling hay, and play-ing sports. The work ethic that I developed on the farm proved to be a great foundation to be involved in the ready-mix industry. Most would describe the daily routine of a ready-mix producer as nothing short of insanity. Just like so many people don’t under-stand the difference between cement and concrete, just as many don’t grasp the amount of effort it takes to produce the material that is the foundation of virtually every structure built.
The recession took its toll on the economy, industry, and association. It has been a long recovery, but those that perse-vered are stronger for it and are now better equipped to weather the next storm. Fortunately, there has been a renewed vigor for the association as well. Participation is back up, more families are coming to events, and the industry is seeing some fruits of our association’s efforts. The latter of those can be hard to measure, but the national recognition Finley and our association have re-ceived speaks for itself. I encourage each and every one of us to continue to support and be active in the association.

A word from the presidentEnvironmental Control & Safety CommitteeThe Environmental Control & Safety Committee is tasked with working with gov-ernmental agencies so that the KCA will be consulted before any governmental regulations concerning air, water or noise pollution are modified or changed which will affect the Ready Mix Concrete Industry. This committee acts as a liaison between governmental agencies and the ready mix concrete industries in all areas of environmental quality and control.

KCA Safety Awards are presented to Ready Mixed Concrete Plants with zero lost time accidents for the 2016 operating year.
KCA Plants are divided into three categories based on the size of the operation. Category A includes all plants operating in Kentucky with an annual average number of trucks stationed at the plant equal to or less than nine. Category B includes those plants operating in Kentucky with more than nine trucks but less than twenty on an annual average. Category C represents all plants operating with twenty or more trucks stationed at the plant on an annual average.
Overall Category Winners are those plants which had the lowest Accident Frequency Rate (AFR) per 100,000 yards produced among those plants submitted to their specific size category.
