BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2017-2018 SEASON
4 MusicalArtsIndiana.org MusicalArtsIndiana.org 5
A WORD FROM OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Dear Friends,
It is a sunny day in August as I write this – a beautiful day: mid-70’s, and low humidity. You know the sort of day. I am busy in preparations for our 25th season. I had no idea when I prepared for our first concert that we would still be around in 25 years. But here we are. About six or eight years ago I first had the notion that I would retire one day, and began to speak to the board about succession planning. Last season I announced my retirement, and wrote you about our succession strategy. You met our new Associate Artistic Director and the Directors of Children’s Choir of Michiana. We began the transition, which will be completed in May 2018.
I am excited about several things: 1. Our board remains a strong organization that serves the community and
governs the company with professionalism, wisdom, and grace. I retire knowing the board will oversee the future growth of Musical Arts Indiana.
2. The new musical leaders are talented, capable, and kind – and the choirs have accepted them enthusiastically. Our ongoing staff member, Jenna Grisham, is efficient and effective and will continue to manage the company well.
3. We are developing new venues – largely churches that enthusiastically welcome us for concerts.
4. Our main donors are generous and loyal.
Which brings me to my one concern: ongoing funding. The National Endowment for the Arts is at risk, and all arts organizations face an uncertain future. Balancing our budget is always a challenge, and that challenge will not soon go away. We need your continued help. Consider a donation; consider volunteering for our board or other jobs.
Thank you for the strong support you have given us for 25 years. May it continue for 25 more.
“Sing-cerely”
For more than 25 years, we’ve been connecting people who care with causes that matter.
We partner with local nonprofit organizations to create and build endowed funds, which provide permanent financial support for those organizations. We also spearhead strategic initiatives in the arts, early childhood education, community building, and senior living, working with others to make our county a better, more vibrant place to call “home.”

Founded in 1993, Vesper Chorale took
its name from the early evening prayer
service of the traditional church liturgy,
and originally performed exclusively sacred
music. Led by its educational mission,
the choir has partnered with church, high
school, and college music departments,
providing participants with a professional-
level performance experience. In November
of 2008, Vesper Chorale launched a new initiative, its Diverse Journeys Concert
Series, aspiring to collaborate with ethnic communities in celebrating the music
and history of their respective cultures. Vesper Chorale performed Donald
McCullough’s Holocaust Cantata — Songs from the Camps at Temple Beth-El of
South Bend and Temple Jeremiah in Northfield, Illinois. Public Broadcasting
Station WNIT recorded and broadcast their performance in April of 2010 in a
production nominated for an Indiana Broadcasters Association Spectrum Award.
A series of programs with Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church began in
May of 2011, exploring the musical traditions of the African-American heritage.
This series continued with its third program developed for the 2015-2016 season.
Connections with the Latino community — through the congregation of
St. Adalbert’s Parish — began with a concert in 2012 and continued in 2014.
Vesper Chorale has been recognized with awards from the Kurt and Tessye
Simon Fund for Holocaust Remembrance, Memorial Hospital Foundation,
Elnora Stickley Foundation, Indiana Arts Commission, Indiana Council for the
Humanities, the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County, Progress Club of
South Bend, and the Josephson Music Trust. In 2008, in commemoration of its
15th Anniversary, Vesper Chorale received a citation from the Mayor of South
Bend for its contribution to the community through the arts.
In the late 1990s, Vesper Chamber Orchestra was formed to join Vesper Chorale in the performance of oratorios, creating the critically acclaimed Basically Baroque concert series. This series has presented such works as Haydn’s Creation, Mozart’s C Minor Mass and Requiem, Fauré’s Requiem, and Handel’s Messiah. Performances have taken Vesper Chorale to campuses and churches across northern Indiana and Southwestern Michigan, including Indiana Purdue University at Fort Wayne, Manchester College, Southwestern Michigan College, Lake Michigan College, and others. The orchestra performs Messiah every second year. In the spring of 2012 Vesper Chamber Orchestra joined the choir in the world premiere of Jorge Muñiz’s StabatMater. The autumn of 2014 saw the orchestra performing the North American premiere of Machu Picchu Concert for Quena (Andean Flute) performed by quena virtuoso Nayo Ulloa.

Now in its 13th season, Children’s Choir of Michiana espouses a fundamental
belief that all children can learn to sing. It holds workshops & concerts
throughout north central Indiana and southern Michigan. Children’s Choir of
Michiana has collaborated with the Goshen Community Chorus at Goshen
College, and the Dowagiac Choral Festival. In commemoration of its fifth
anniversary, the choir performed Rutter’s Mass of the Children with Vesper Chorale
and Vesper Chamber Orchestra. The choir traveled to Washington D.C. in June
of 2012 for its first concert tour, and hosts an annual Invitational Choir Festival
to which it invites singers from schools and churches throughout the region.
Children’s Choir of Michiana celebrated its 10th Season with a trip to New York,
where it performed with choirs from around the world at Carnegie Hall. Their first
“overseas” trip took them to Costa Rica in June of 2016.
Are you a Singer? If you or someone you know is interested in singing with either of our ensembles, please contact our directors for an audition.
