OUR MISSION:To empower and support people with developmental disabilities by offering high-quality, individualized opportunities that foster independence and community inclusion.

One of the joys we see first-hand is the generosity of our families, staff, volunteers, and community partners who believe in the Charles River Center and are passionate about our mission. We are strengthened by the numerous ways in which you demonstrate your commitment to work with us to provide high-quality, individualized supports and services.

As we enter into the third year of our strategic plan, we are pleased with the accomplishments we have achieved. We have…

• Expanded residential services with two additional group homes

• Expanded Adult Foster Care as a residential option for families living with their adult children. We currently support 30 families.

• Obtained a state contract to provide Shared Living services as an alternative residential option to traditional group living arrangements

• Provided social/recreational programs for newly-eligible men and women with autism without intellectual disabilities

• Welcomed four new community members to the Board of Directors

• Sponsored three staff members, who graduated with advanced degrees in nursing or applied behavioral analysis, with assistance from the Charles River scholarship fund

• Hired a Training Coordinator to manage advanced and specialized credentialing of our workforce in areas such as autism, Alzheimer’s disease, and person-centered planning

• Enhanced our outreach efforts in the MetroWest area by growing the adult extended day services, community-based day supports, and children’s programs in our facility in Natick.

Our future goals are equally as ambitious despite the uncertainty of state and federal funding for our services. To name a few, we are looking forward to opening a day program specifically designed for adults with autism; we will create a clinical department within Charles River to expand our behavioral supports to families in their homes; and we will expand our transitional services for young adults.

The Charles River Center depends upon your generosity to help fund the gap between government support and the actual costs to maintain the excellence we have known and we expect. Thank you to everyone who made a gift to Charles River this past year. As you can see in the following pages, your gifts are helping those we serve lead fulfilling and productive lives. We are grateful for the trust you have in us and your belief in what can be accomplished.

With gratitude,

Alice B. Taylor Chair, Board of Directors

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR

At the vacation program, each day is filled with activities that fit the needs of every camper. Activities include exercise, music therapy, reading circles, art projects, and cooking. Each day, campers participate within their assigned groups (3-5 kids), led by two staff members and volunteers, and generally stay together for the duration of the day. Each participant receives individualized support from multiple staff members in their groups, allowing them to form connections and maximize every camp opportunity.

Campers enjoy the diversity of the activities, time spent outside, and especially look forward to outdoor water games on hot days. Socializing with friends, whether verbally or not, is also a meaningful aspect of the vacation program experience. Many campers form lasting relations with other campers, staff, and volunteers. The most enjoyable parts of the day are when we spend time together as a group and simply enjoy each other’s company, no matter the activity.

As recreational aides, we adjust activities to the abilities of the campers to ensure that everyone’s needs are met. Our goal is to make sure that every camper is participating to the best of their abilities and having fun at the program. We enjoy joking around with campers and seeing happy faces. Some of our favorite memories are impromptu requested activities such as dance parties, sing-alongs, and outdoor games.

Both of us are volunteers-turned-staff members, and over the years we have learned about adapting to the needs of campers and what it takes to make a fun and safe environment. At the end of the day, campers leave CRC with artwork, allergy-safe baked goods, and excitement for the next day.

Charles River offers camps in Needham for children and young adults aged 7 to 21 during December, February, April, and for four weeks during the summer.

2 3

Opened a new residence in Sharon, housing four young adults with autism.

Our first Special Olympics bowling team competed in the regionals.

We started a collaboration with the Framingham Public School system. A CRC staff person holds office hours once a week to meet new families and collaborate with the special education department.

Anne-Marie Bajwa named new President and CEO of the Charles River Center as John Grugan retires after 35 years.

Louise Condon and her team hosted the 32nd annual Valentine’s Day Dance for Charles River Center participants and their families.

The fund-a-need auction at the Building a Dream Gala was the most successful ever—raising $38,000 for exercise equipment and nutrition counseling.

Charles River was approved to become a Shared Living provider. The program enables individuals with disabilities to live with caring community members.

The “mobile market” officially launched— bringing organic produce grown by CRC participants to low-income housing neighborhoods in Needham.

218 children attended Wings for Autism at Logan Airport, a test run through the airport boarding process. The program was founded by the Charles River Center in 2011 and has quickly grown nationally.

The Needham Golf Club hosted its 30th annual golf tournament, with proceeds providing scholarships for camps and the respite home.

The most enjoyable parts of the day are when we spend time together as a group and simply enjoy each other’s company, no matter the activity.

The art room is a happy place, with abundant natural light, colorful projects hanging from the walls, and music playing softly in the background. Once a week, each of the twelve groups in Day Habilitation visits Leah Foster, the new art teacher in the studio, where participants have room to create, express themselves, and work on skills. Leah, who joined Charles River last spring, is a recreational therapist and has worked with seniors, children in juvenile detention centers, and people with special needs. Leah’s sister, Amy, has Down syndrome and is a valued helper in the art room.

The groups have been working primarily on collaborative pieces… for example a large collage entitled “Beneath the Sea,” which the artists brainstormed, painted, and then decorated with papier-mâché fish and sea creatures. Leah finds that collaborative projects encourage the groups to take turns and work together. Volunteers from the Wellesley Service League (the club has been volunteering at the Charles River Center for a remarkable 48 years!) make sure that everyone contributes.

Frequently, Leah incorporates storytelling into the art, which encourages imagination, vocal expression, imagination, and a better connection with the piece the group is creating. For example, each group collaborated on a short story to accompany a castle mural, which stands about 7 feet tall by 7 feet wide.

The benefits of art therapy for those with disabilities have been well-documented, and everyone at Charles River agrees. Individuals make choices (what technique, what color paper, what medium should I use?), work on fine motors skills, and take risks—since the art room is a no-fail environment that encourages success. And the benefits last far beyond class time. “I like art therapy,” says Carol. “Especially the projects and people.”

What is your job title? Administrator/File Clerk

What do you think of your new job? I love my new job because everyone is nice, I like the work, and it’s right up the street from my house!

What do you do at your job? I do special projects for the paralegals—like putting together client packets, printing documents, and scheduling notices on the computer. I fill the printers and copy machine with paper. And I water the plants and wipe down the conference table. But my favorite task is to feed the fish in the big tank.

How did the Charles River Center help you get your job? The skills I learned in my Opportunities to Work program helped me be a great candidate for the job because I got to practice things like how to answer the phone, how to greet customers, how to use the computer, and how to file papers in alphabetical order. At the Charles River Center, I learned to multi-task and learned to be a role model for my peers.

What do you think of the Charles River Center? Elaine, my Case Manager, has helped me prioritize tasks and set goals at my job. The Charles River Center has really helped me have great skills towards my job and be more independent in the community.

The weekend Respite Home in Sharon has been open for just over three years now, and based on occupancy rates, it’s been a tremendous success. Open 20 weekends a year, stays at the Respite Home allow individuals with disabilities to test out their independence and have fun with their peers, while allowing their caregivers time for a restorative break.

Drop off is at 3 pm on Friday and pickup is at 3 pm on Sunday. While at the house, participants enjoy meals together, watch movies, and play games. Saturday outings have included a trip to Canobie Lake Park, a cruise on the Boston Harbor, a tour of Fenway Park, and a visit to King Richard’s Faire. On Sundays, the group visits IHOP and an attraction in Sharon.

While at the house, guests are also learning new skills and practicing others. They are encouraged to help prepare meals, clean up, make their own beds, and while on outings, practice their travel skills. Many families have found their loved one is more self-reliant and capable than expected, which is reassuring for them and empowering for the individual.

With a renewed focus on government-supported programs like Shared Living and Adult Family Care—programs that pay caregivers stipends—more and more people with disabilities are remaining at home. Because of this, and the great reviews from families and individuals alike, the Respite Home is sure to remain a popular service for Charles River Center families.

The Respite Home has been a tremendous resource on many levels for Peter and our family. For Peter, it has reinstated his ability to be more independent, to socialize with others outside of the family, and to venture out into the community. For our family, it means a much-needed reprieve for my elderly and ailing parents, with the comfort of knowing that Peter is well taken care of and is learning some aspects of independence.— Teresa, sister of Respite Home guest Peter

Employment Success StoryAndy Doyle recently left his job at the front desk in the Merritt Building to spread his wings and take a position with Pabian Law in Framingham. Because of his abilities and work ethic, within a very short time, Andy’s duties were significantly increased. Here, Andy tells us all about it…

Having grown up in Needham, I knew about the Charles River Center but didn’t really know what an incredible organization it is and how many different programs and services they provide to those with developmental disabilities. I learned firsthand when I joined the Needham Exchange Club and had the opportunity to visit the center and see how they help their clients. I decided to donate personally to the center because I believe so strongly in their mission and support all they do. When you see the look on their clients’ faces and their smiles, it makes you forget your troubles and know that your dollars are going towards a good thing.

There is a well-known quote that says ‘only by giving are you able to receive more than you already have.’ The Charles River Center gives so much to the community through the inclusion and opportunities it provides for people with developmental disabilities. As longtime supporters of CRC and through servicing their heating needs, we have been blessed to meet several of their resilient and amazing individuals who benefit from CRC programs, housing, jobs and learning opportunities in addition to getting to know some of their dedicated staff. Through the Building a Dream gala and other events, we are proud to support an organization that is helping more than 950 individuals and families to get the support they need in our hometown and beyond.

WHY WE GIVEScott and Cathy MacFarlane Owners of MacFarlane Energy

WHY I GIVEHaving worked in Residential Services at the Charles River Center for almost eight years before I joined its administrative department, I see the quality of care and unwavering supports the individuals at CRC receive daily. I donate to Charles River because I am convinced that the staff and management truly uphold the agency’s mission.
