Opening and closing times of hall for Exhibitors. Be fully aware of what

sections are being entered and come prepared.

Entries should be collected between 4.00pm– 5.00pm Sunday.

No responsibility will be taken for entries not collected.

The Judges decision is final.

No Exhibitors are permitted entry into the hall before 12 noon unless as a

volunteer. No exceptions.

Children can enter in the adult sections in all mediums as well.

Produce, flowers and potted plants will be accepted (can be entered) on Friday

night between 5 – 6pm or on Saturday morning between 7.30 and 9.00am – No

Rules and Regulations Specific to Flowers and Produce

All flowers to be grown by exhibitor, except flower arranging sections.

All Vegetables to be grown by exhibitor.

Note

NND……….Not Necessarily Distinct.

Distinct…….Means Distinctly Different (Six distinct colours).

A Collection is at least 3 different coloured flowers.

If not according to schedule (N.A.S.) ENTRY WILL NOT BE JUDGED AND

WILL BE A DISPLAY ONLY.

Bottles and water will be available to assist entrants at the hall.

You can use last year’s Bairnsdale show entries for craft or

photography in this years Buchan Flower Show.

Potted plants can be re entered each year

Eggs must be fresh.

Some helpful information about Roses

Hybrid Tea or Large Flowered Rose—This is the rose with, in most cases, one

bloom on a long stem. The elegant, slim bud opens to a neat large, beautifully

shaped bloom. Some of the best known in this class are Blue Moon, Peace,

Papa Meilland. They may or may not have perfume.

Floribunda or Cluster Flowered Rose—These are the ones with several

blooms to a stem; the flowers are usually a little smaller than the Hybrid Tea.

Here you will find double, semi double and almost single such as “Blueberry

Hill”. The world’s most favourite Floribunda is said to be Iceberg.

Miniature Roses—These are miniature versions of the above; they are usually

about a third the size of the regular roses. Their bloom is usually no more than

5 cm across. Ground cover roses are not miniature roses.

David Austin English Roses—Here the roses are more like the old fashioned

bloom in that they have, in most cases, many more petals which are sometimes

arranged in a quartered fashion.

About 40 years ago David Austin became concerned that the rose breeders,

while creating ever more beautiful blooms, were beginning to lose the perfumes,

so he started using the old fashioned, highly perfumed plants. The result is that

with his 200 or so roses most have an exquisite scent.

More on Roses….

One of his best roses is Graham Thomas, which was in 2009 inducted into the

world rose ‘hall of fame’. Some of the descriptions of the scents are myrrh with a

hint of lemon, old rose, spicy, fruity with a hint of citrus, so if you want to enter

the best perfumed rose, a David Austin Rose might be a good bet.

Pruning roses for the show - To get blooms for the show is a bit tricky in this

region but try to prune at least 10 weeks before the Show. (Saturday 27th Au-

gust 2017 latest date)

Feeding – Roses should be fed 3 or 4 times a year or as each flush of blooming

has finished. Be sure the fertilizer is a good all round one with plenty of potash

in it. Potash is essential for good bloom and healthy plants. If you buy one of

the special rose foods follow the instructions on the pack and frequent doses of

something like Charlie Carp or Seasol is also beneficial.

Some information about Proteacae

The Proteacae Family have a number of Australian Plants including Banksia,

Grevillea, Hakea and Waratah. Here we will deal with the South African Protea

Family.

Protea – Most will be familiar with the King Protea, a most beautiful large

flower usually pink with a greyish centre. There are other colour variations in-

cluding a white one. Another well-known one is Pink Ice. This one is most usu-

ally found in floral arrangements from the florist.

Leucadendron -These have lovely long stems and are

brightly coloured red, green, yellow and some if let mature

have interesting cones of various colours.

Leucospermum -These are fantastic for floral art. They

keep fresh looking for weeks. Colours are mostly orangey

shades and yellows. They are known as the Pincushion

Bush.

There are over 130 proteas, 80 or so Leucadendron and about 48 Leucosper-

mum.

Handy Hints

Irises can be ready for the flower show if you have a late variety.

To ensure that your flowers or roses are ready for the competition by the nomi-

nated date, you should prune and feed plants at the right times.
