Across the globe, the Concours d’Elegance is a celebrated tradition. Dating back to 17th century French society, the Concours d’Elegance has evolved from a parade of horse drawn

carriages through the parks of Paris to the most venerated international red carpet of automobile events.

From the Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este in Lake Como, Italy, to the Monte Carlo Concours d’ Elégance in Monaco, and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Monterey, CA, the highly anticipated event takes place in the most exclusive, sought after destinations around the world - and now, it has found a worthy home in Canada.

BUILDING A LEGACY SHARE IN A GRAND TRADITION

Born from a dream based on heritage, tradition and excellence, the McLeese family’s vision for the Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance began in 1998, after acquiring 574 spectacular acres on

a stretch of untouched shoreline, with panoramic views of Georgian Bay.

Envisioning a promenade of rarely seen classic automobiles down Cobble Beach Drive, founder Robert McLeese was inspired to createan exclusive experience that would entertain an international arena, beckoning automotive enthusiasts and jetsetters from far and wide.

Bringing the world’s elite to the shores of Georgian Bay, the incredible success of the Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance has introduced a new era of luxury experience to Canada.

Welcome to the 5th annual Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Building on the momentum of four successful annual events, The Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance is immensely proud to bring Canada a fifth year of this important automotive tradition of excellence.

In year one, 4000 attendees and 100 Participants raised $51,000 for the Sunnybrook Foundation.

By year four, new classes, more judges, vintage wooden boats, motorcycles and the Museum Class brought over 6,000 guests to the event and has raised over $290,000 for charity.

Chief Judge & Lee Lacocca award winner John Carlson says “Hands down, Rob McLeese has the nicest Canadian Concours d’Elegance going. There is nothing in the country that holds a candle to this event with its location, quality of cars, sponsorship and hospitality”.

Sunnybrook Foundation exists to support the advancement of our world-class health sciences centre, through active fundraising in support of research, education and equipment initiatives at

Sunnybrook.

As a recognized leader in trauma, critical care and disaster preparedness, Sunnybrook cares for the most seriously ill and injured patients in the province. Our Trauma, Emergency & Critical Care Program treats 54,000 patients each year. About 1,200 of them will be suffering life-threatening traumas – with half arriving by helicopter. The hospital’s helipad is located about 500 metres from the trauma room. This means paramedics and trauma staff have to coordinate with a land ambulance to transfer patients, whose lives depend on these moments where every second counts.

With funds raised at the Concours d’Elegance, we can help build a state-of-the-art helipad on top of the hospital to expedite patient transfers, giving our trauma teams more time to save lives.

Fourth annual Canadian concours d'elegance, held September 18 near Owen Sound, debuts classic car test drive program

A 1932 Auburn boattail speedster has become the first Canadian-owned best-in-show winner at the fourth annual Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance held near Owen Sound, Ontario the weekend of September 18.

The eight-cylinder 8-100A owned by Gerry Hockin of Burlington, Ontario – which has formerly taken home first-prize honours at the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg’s national meet, and has been shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California – features a period-correct black paint scheme and period-aftermarket Woodlite headlights.

The car beat out the winners of 19 other classes – selected from a total of more than 120 expertly restored classic vehicles – for the honour, and also won the people’s choice award. Prior best-in-show winners hailed from Pennsylvania, in 2013; Colorado, in 2014; and, last year, New York, making Hockin’s car the first

he United States has Pebble Beach. But Canada has Cobble Beach, and “our stones are bigger,” Rob McLeese notes with a chuckle as he prepares to host Cobble Beach’s fourth annual concours d’elegance on the shores of Georgian Bay some 130 miles northwest

of Toronto.

The Canadian concours takes place September 17-18 on the nearly 600 acres of the Cobble Beach Golf Resort.

“My father bought the property in 1998 when he was 85 years old,” McLeese said, noting a 250-foot rise from the shoreline to the county road. It was between those landmarks that McLeese’s father built a golf resort that opened in 2007.

Toronto man's legendary F1 Lotus to be at prestigious show, but won't be judged DAN PROUDFOOTSpecial to The Globe and MailPublished Thursday, Sep. 15, 2016 5:00AM EDTLast updated Friday, Sep. 16, 2016 7:18AM EDT

If speed were a factor, Ayrton Senna’s Lotus 99T would win Best of Show at the Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It would lap the field, or, rather, the fairway.

But speed matters not at all – even in the Race Cars class. Judges completing scorecards on Sunday morning will find no provision for points related to lap times or podium finishes, aero downforce or mechanical grip.

William Halkiw doesn’t care.

In fact, he has opted to show his newly acquired Formula One car on a display-only basis. That’s because competing cars are required to start at the judges’ bidding, and Halkiw has decided against restoring the turbo-six to running order; his fascination with the Lotus is tied to the likelihood its engine has not started since Ayrton Senna last turned it off in 1987.

Previously, Halkiw has entered his fast road cars at Cobble knowing they have no shot at Best of Show. Last year, his Ford GT emerged from climate-controlled storage to win Exotics, pre-2006. Best in Class suffices for the Toronto criminal defence lawyer.

Fact is, most classes of cars have no chance at Best of Show. Prewar classics rule the Cobble 18th fairway, on Georgian Bay north of Owen Sound, Ont., just as they do at Pebble Beach, north of Monterey, Calif., and all ranking concours in between.

At Cobble, the first year’s Best of Show honours went to a 1928 Isotta Fraschini 8A SS, followed by a 1936 Delahaye 135 Competition Court Teardrop Coupe in 2014, and last year a 1938 Graham 07, coachwork by Saotchik.

All three were tailored in European coachwork, all three were splendid depression deniers, all three were American-owned. It’s worth noting, when a 1954 Ferrari 375 M Scaglietti Coupe was selected best at Pebble Beach in 2014, it caused a sensation among collectors, as it was the first
