Dear Friend of the Museum,

There are many ways to measure success. And by many of them, 2017 was a resoundingly

successful year, as this Annual Report shows. With your help:

• We exceeded our $8.4 million Campaign for the Discovery Museum goal, culminating in a

complete renovation and expansion of our museum.

• We concluded the campaign with a total of $8.8 million in incredibly generous

contributions from hundreds of friends of the museum, a third of whom were moved to

make their first gifts ever to this organization.

• We served more than 150,000 people in 2017, our

second-busiest year ever.

• Our Traveling Science Workshops reached nearly

34,000 students in their classrooms.

• We ended 2017 with more than 2,400 member

families, a 9% increase over the prior year.

• We served 26% of our total audience for free or

at a deep discount through our Open Door

Connections program, which provides opportunities

for those facing physical, developmental, or

financial barriers to experience the museum.

That’s 40,000 people who, thanks to your generous

support, experienced our playful approach to learn-

ing without the barrier of cost.

That we were able to accomplish all of this—despite one building being closed for six months

during construction—is a testament to your commitment and your belief in us that what we do

is good for children. With your support—your contributions to our capital campaign and annual

fund, your time volunteering, and your continued visitation and patience during our building

project—2017 was a very successful year, and one that set the stage for the chapter we began on

March 1 with the opening of our new Discovery Museum. What we built together is a museum

that’s new, but honors our past; that’s larger and more accessible, but still comfortable and

welcoming; that’s filled with fresh, modern exhibits that still inspire children the same way they

always have, through the simple joys of hands-on play and discovery. We remain resolute in our

commitment to sharing all of this with as many families as possible in the years to come. We

thank you again for helping to make it all possible.

The Campaign for the Discovery Museum made possible our new building, its exhibits, and Discovery Woods. Through this Campaign, the museum made tangible its commitment to accessibility for all, the importance of early learning experiences in science and nature, and the critical role of play. This Campaign would not have been possible without the extraordinary generosity, from start to finish, of The Manton Foundation and its Trustees, whose investment over ten years supported the effort from conception, through planning, to two donor challenges, inspiring $4 million in new Campaign gifts. The Discovery Museum Board of Directors, Campaign leadership, and staff thank The Manton Foundation for its confidence, just as we thank all of our donors for sharing our vision for a bright future.
