EggLofterRocketChallenge
CompetitionInstructions:Eachrocketwillhavethechancetoflytwice,timepermitting.Thebestaltitudewillbeusedforscoring.Eachrocketwillbeinspectedforsafetybeforeeachlaunch.Thelaunchareawillbedeclaredopentostartthecompletionandthosethatarereadymayloadtheirrocketsonthelaunchracksandbringtheirscorecardtothelaunchcontrol.Eachrocketwillbelaunchindividually.Afterallrocketsarelaunchedandlandedtherangewillbedeclaredopenandthenextroundofrocketswillbeloadedwhiletheonespreviouslylaunchedareretrieved.Eachteammustretrievetheirownrocket.DONOTRETRIEVEANOTHERTEAMSROCKET!!!Retrievedrocketswillbebroughttothejudgingtabletobescoredonheightandtoensureeggisnotbroken.Rangewillthenbeclosedandthenextbatchofrocketscanbelaunched.
Eachteamwilldesignandbuildanegg-bearingrockettocarryamedium-sizedeggtoaheightof480feetwithoutbreakingtheegguponlanding.Anybrokeneggisdisqualified.
Eachteamwillmakeashort(3-5minute)presentationontheirrocketdesign.
Whattobring:
Individuals/Teamsmustsupplypre-builtrocket,motor,andpackingmaterials.
Mediumsizedeggandlauncherwillbeprovidedonsite.
Thischallengeisopentoteamsof2to3people.
RocketRequirements:
• Rocketweighlessthan2pounds.• Nometalisallowedtobeusedintheconstructionoftherocketotherthanthemotorretention.• NomotorlargerthananFmaybeused.Anycertifiedmotorormotorscanbeused.• Rocketmaybeastockrocketkitoroneofyourowndesign.
FacilitatorRecommendations:
• Practiceflightsarehighlyrecommended.
• Participantmayuseastockrocketkitortheycandesignarocketthemselves.

AltitudeScoring:RocketswillbetrackedwiththeEstesApponIphonebytwo4Hofficialsandtheaverageofthetwowillbetherecordedaltitudefortherocket.Thealtitudescoreforeveryflightwillbetheabsolutedifferenceinfeetbetweenthe480feettargetaltitudeandthereportedactualflightaltitudeinfeet(alwaysapositivenumberorzero).

MODELROCKETSAFETYCODE1.MaterialsIwilluseonlylightweight,non-metalpartsforthenose,body,andfinsofmyrocket.2.Motors.Iwilluseonlycertified,commercially-mademodelrocketmotors,andwillnottamperwiththesemotorsorusethemforanypurposesexceptthoserecommendedbythemanufacturer.3.IgnitionSystem.Iwilllaunchmyrocketswithanelectricallaunchsystemandelectricalmotorigniters.Mylaunchsystemwillhaveasafetyinterlockinserieswiththelaunchswitch,andwillusealaunchswitchthatreturnstothe“off”positionwhenreleased.4.Misfires.IfmyrocketdoesnotlaunchwhenIpressthebuttonofmyelectricallaunchsystem,Iwillremovethelauncher’ssafetyinterlockordisconnectitsbattery,andwillwait60secondsafterthelastlaunchattemptbeforeallowinganyonetoapproachtherocket.5.LaunchSafety.Iwilluseacountdownbeforelaunch,andwillensurethateveryoneispayingattentionandisasafedistanceofatleast15feetawaywhenIlaunchrocketswithDmotorsorsmaller,and30feetwhenIlaunchlargerrockets.IfIamuncertainaboutthesafetyorstabilityofanuntestedrocket,Iwillcheckthestabilitybeforeflightandwillflyitonlyafterwarningspectatorsandclearingthemawaytoasafedistance.WhenconductingasimultaneouslaunchofmorethantenrocketsIwillobserveasafedistanceof1.5timesthemaximumexpectedaltitudeofanylaunchedrocket.6.Launcher.Iwilllaunchmyrocketfromalaunchrod,tower,orrailthatispointedtowithin30degreesoftheverticaltoensurethattherocketfliesnearlystraightup,andIwilluseablastdeflectortopreventthemotor’sexhaustfromhittingtheground.Topreventaccidentaleyeinjury,Iwillplacelauncherssothattheendofthelaunchrodisaboveeyelevelorwillcaptheendoftherodwhenitisnotinuse.7.Size.Mymodelrocketwillnotweighmorethan1,500grams(53ounces)atliftoffandwillnotcontainmorethan125grams(4.4ounces)ofpropellantor320N-sec(71.9pound-seconds)oftotalimpulse.8.FlightSafety.Iwillnotlaunchmyrocketattargets,intoclouds,ornearairplanes,andwillnotputanyflammableorexplosivepayloadinmyrocket.9.LaunchSite.Iwilllaunchmyrocketoutdoors,inanopenareaatleastaslargeasshownintheaccompanyingtable,andinsafeweatherconditionswithwindspeedsnogreaterthan20milesperhour.Iwillensurethatthereisnodrygrassclosetothelaunchpad,andthatthelaunchsitedoesnotpresentriskofgrassfires.10.RecoverySystem.Iwillusearecoverysystemsuchasastreamerorparachuteinmyrocketsothatitreturnssafelyandundamagedandcanbeflownagain,andIwilluseonlyflame-resistantorfireproofrecoverysystemwaddinginmyrocket.11.RecoverySafety.Iwillnotattempttorecovermyrocketfrompowerlines,talltrees,orotherdangerousplaces.
