Dear Beth-El Zedeck congregant,

Judaism is a system of communication with a grammar of shared values, traditions, practices, memories and hopes. “Community” requires “communication.”

This directory is not merely a listing of names and numbers. We hope that it will help you to enhance connections and nurture hospitality and community among the members of our congregational family.

We come together at 600 West 70th Street for prayer, study and celebration, but the boundaries of our synagogue extend also to our homes, our neighborhoods and beyond.

Please use this address and telephone directory to reach out, to extend the bonds of community and the feeling of family that come from being part of Beth-El Zedeck.

Dr. Dennis C. Sasso Rebecca GeyerSenior Rabbi President

Festivals and Holy Days are observed with services and creative programs that highlight the solemn and joyous aspects of our yearly cycle. Special children’s programming for pre-school through high school is an integral part of our High Holy Days observances and festivals.

Worship Services are conducted in either our beautiful Max and Mae Simon Sanctuary or our intimate Kaufman/Schuchman Chapel. The Sanctuary has seating for 600 expanding to seating for 1,500 during the High Holy Days. The Chapel houses breathtaking stained glass windows and seats approximately 200.

Come worship with us in a spirit of tradition and renewal.

Congregational ProgrammingYouth

Early Childhood Center in the Ethel and Harry Glanzman Youth Pavilion

Our Early Childhood program provides a loving Jewish educational environment. We recognize that the intellectual, spiritual, social, emotional and physical development of our children is intricately interwoven. In keeping with that philosophy, we provide activities that include academics, the arts, music and creative movement, crafts, cooking, large and small motor skill activities, Shabbat celebration, Hebrew language instruction, introduction of Jewish customs and traditions, and exciting entertainment. Our 3-year-olds and older will have the opportunity to enhance their learning experience by using iPads in their classrooms. Early care and aftercare are available. All our children, ages twelve months through Pre-Kindergarten (Kindergarten Readiness), thrive on exploration, creativity, curiosity, discovery, spontaneity and lots of love.

In addition to our academic year, our Beth-El Zedeck Early Childhood Summer Camp allows our young campers to experiment and explore by using all five of their senses. Summer camp includes water play at the JCC Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Aquatic Compex for 3s, 4s, and 5s and water table/sprinkler fun for 2s and under. Early care and aftercare are available. Our programming gives our children the opportunity to develop self-confidence, excellent learning and socialization skills and enhanced self-esteem. Our curriculum recognizes that play is the best tool for learning and allows flexibility to follow the interests and needs of each child.

The Rabbi Sidney and Shirley Steiman Religious SchoolOur goal is to help develop a positive, joyous and informed Jewish identity that links home and synagogue. Religious School is offered for Kindergarten through tenth grade. Students in grades 11 and 12 can join our Madrichim program to serve as teaching assistants in our Religious School. Grades Kindergarten through 7 come on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. beginning with a T’fillah service for students and parents before classes begin. Grades 8 through 10 come Sundays at 4:30 p.m. Our Religious School teaches Jewish history, customs and celebrations, Jewish thought, and values. Teachers with special skills enhance the curriculum by teaching art, music, dance and a variety of other areas of student interest. Time is devoted not only to developing important skills and knowledge, but to nurturing the life of the spirit. Throughout the year we invite families for special programs designed for family education and information.

Dor l’DorGrades 6 through 7 classes meet during Religious School with a curriculum that allows for an experiential and hands-on approach to learning prayer, ritual and custom. As part of this class, Dor l’Dor participates regularly on the bimah at Shabbat Services.

Confirmation AcademyStudents in grades 8, 9, and 10 meet on Sunday evenings from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in our Confirmation Academy. Class curriculum for Grade 8 utilizes multimedia and conversation in studying the Shoah (Holocaust) in the first semester and the modern State of Israel in the second. Grade 9 explores the diversity of Judaism and the religions of our neighbors. Several times throughout the year, the 8th and 9th graders participate in Shevet Ahim (boys) and Rosh Hodesh (girls), where they explore their teenage years through Jewish values.

The 10th grade class focuses on the development of an emerging Jewish identity and personal theology. The highlight of the year is the trip to New York with the Rabbis. Throughout the year the students work on preparation for Confirmation, when they lead Erev Shavuot services, including an original cantata.

Shir Ami ChoirStudents in Religious School first through fifth grades are invited to join this youth choir that will perform at Hanukah, select Shabbat services, Purim, and a final concert, The Zimriyah. Shir Ami is a fun way for students to be creative and express their Judaism through music, directed by Cantor Melissa Cohen.

Bar/Bat MitzvahPreparation for Bar/Bat Mitzvah is done in cooperation with the Bureau of Jewish Education or the Hasten Hebrew Academy of Indianapolis, which do a majority of the Hebrew instruction. Students are required to have 4 years of Hebrew language instruction at one of the two institutions, as well as family seminars that include special tzedakah/mitzvah activities. In grades 6 and 7, students are part of our Dor l’Dor program. During Religious School class, students learn the prayers of our congregation in a way that will allow them to practice their Hebrew skills and explore a deeper meaning of the prayers through classroom activities and our T’fillah laboratory.

Every student will have the opportunity to join their fellow classmates on the bimah as they participate in Shabbat morning services 4 times a year. Dor l’Dor helps our students practice their learning and encourages them to continue their participation in their post Bar/Bat Mitzvah years.
