Introduction: Potato variety trials were conducted at three locations in Maine as part of the NE1231 Regional
Project (Development of New Potato Clones for Environmental and Economic Sustainability in the Northeast).
Forty varieties and clones were tested at Aroostook Research Farm, Presque Isle, Maine. Thirty-five NE1231 and
advanced breeding clones were tested on a commercial farm in Exeter (central Maine), while sixty-seven NE1231
and advanced breeding clones were tested on a commercial farm in St. Agatha (northern Maine). The primary
objective of all of the Maine trials is to determine performance, quality, and storage characteristics of promising
potato clones and new varieties in Maine.
Methods: Single-row plots, 25 feet long, were utilized for the NE1231 trials at Aroostook Research Farm. The plot
length for the advanced selection, Central Maine NE1231, and St. Agatha NE1231 trials was 20 feet. All trials were
hand planted using randomized complete block designs and four replications (two replications per treatment for the
least advanced clones in the Central Maine and St. Agatha trials). The seedpiece spacing used for each line is listed
in subsequent tables. Details of important management practices are presented in Maine Table 1. At the Presque
Isle site the varieties were grouped so that separate tests could be vinekilled and harvested based on maturity
classification. Remaining cultural practices were similar to those used on commercial farms in the area. Specific
gravity was determined at harvest using the weight-in-air/weight-in-water method. Hollow heart ratings indicate
the number of hollow tubers observed per 40 large tubers examined. Percent hollow heart is based on 10 tubers per
replicate plot whenever 10 tubers of the appropriate size class are available. Unless noted otherwise chip color
evaluations were conducted during December following storage at 50 F. Chips were fried at 350 F for threeo o
minutes and evaluated using an Agtron M35, calibrated with the black "0" disk = 0 and the white "90" disk = 90.
Chips were crushed and reported values are means from four replicates per variety. Each sample was read three
times with thorough mixing between readings.
Susceptibility to skinning and shatter bruise was measured soon after harvest. Approximately 10 lbs of
tubers that exceeded 1f” diameter were tumbled in a drum with three stones for 1 minute at 15 rpm. Each tuber
was then rated for the percentage of the tuber surface affected by skinning or shatter bruise and the percentage of
tubers with air and/or thumbnail cracks. Additional samples were collected for shatter and blackspot bruise
susceptibility measurements with the weight-drop method as noted in Table 17.
Results:
Rainfall, General Growth, and Plant Stands. Rainfall by month and location is listed in Maine Table 2.
Rainfall was abundant at all three sites during May and June. All three sites had low rainfall during July and
August. Supplemental irrigation was applied during July and August at the Central Maine site, while Presque Isle
and St. Agatha experienced significant water deficits during tuber bulking. Early plant growth was good at all three
sites. Adirondack Red, Reveille Russet, Russet Burbank, Snowden, Teton Russet, and AF4831-2 had relatively
poor early to mid-season vigor at the Presque Isle site. Katahdin, AF5563-5, B2834-8, and COAF10055-6 had
relatively poor early to mid-season vigor at the Exeter site. Russet Norkotah, AAF08434-1, AF5407-13, BNC364-
1 and ND8068-5Rus had relatively poor early to mid-season vigor at the St. Agatha site. Pest control practices
were effective at all sites. Plant stand equaled or exceeded 90% of targets for most clones at all three sites. The
only NE1231 regional trial exceptions at Presque Isle were Snowden (82%) and Russet Burbank (80%). At Exeter,
AF4648-2 (86%) had relatively low percent stand. At St. Agatha, Russet Burbank (88%), Shepody (89%), and
BNC364-1 (89%) had relatively low percent stands. In the advanced selection trials at Exeter only AF5682-5
(88%) had percent stands that were below 90%. At St. Agatha, AF5522-4 (88%) and NDAF092412-3 (89%) stands
were below 90%. None of the clones in the Presque Isle advanced red trial had less than 90% stands. Yields were
far below average at Presque Isle, above average at Exeter and average at St. Agatha. Total yields for Presque Isle,
Exeter, and St. Agatha averaged 168, 345, and 262 cwt/A, respectively (mean of six standard varieties grown at all
locations). Common scab was a serious problem at the Exeter and St. Agatha sites.
Aroostook Research Farm NE1231 Regional Potato Variety Trials. Yield and quality results for the 2017
NE1231 trials at Aroostook Research Farm are presented in Maine Tables 3 to 8. Yields were poor due to low
rainfall during tuber bulking. Tuber size was small and very little hollow heart incidence was observed. In the red
trial, Dark Red Norland and AF5245-1 had U.S.#1 yields that were equal to Chieftain. AF4831-2 had lower US#1
yields than Dark Red Norland. Dark Red Norland, AF4831-2, and AF5425-1 had good tuber appearance. AF4138-
8 and AF5280-5 were competitive with Superior as early fresh market whites, though AF4138-8 yields were
slightly lower than Superior. Both had low external defects, small tuber size, and good tuber appearance. Superior
had high external defects incidence. Yukon Gold and AF5429-3 had especially good yields in the mid-season trial.
Katahdin, Yukon Gold, AF4648-2, AF5040-8, AF5225-1, AF5429-3, BNC364-1, and NY161 had good tuber
appearance scores. AF4648-2 and AF5429-3 had promising yield, appearance, gravity, and chip color for the
chipping market. Snowden and Kennebec has high external defects incidence. Caribou Russet and Reveille Russet
were the top yielding varieties in the russet trial. Shepody, Teton Russet, AF4296-3, and TX08352-5Ru also had
good yields. Caribou Russet, Reveille Russet, Russet Norkotah, Teton Russet, and TX08352-5Ru had good tuber
appearance scores. Russet Burbank and ND8068-5Rus had high external defects incidence. Hollow heart
incidence in large-sized tubers was above 10% for Atlantic (25%) and Superior (14%). Atlantic, Caribou Russet,
AF4648-2, AF5429-3, B2904-2, BNC364-1, and ND8068-5Rus had the highest specific gravities. Chip color
scores were particularly good for Kennebec, AF4648-2, AF5040-8, AF5280-5, AF5429-3, BNC364-1, and NY157.
Central Maine NE1231 Regional Potato Variety Trial. Yield and quality results for the 2017 NE1231 trial
at Exeter are presented in Maine Tables 9 and 10. Yields were good in this trial and tuber sizing was generally
good. Atlantic, Superior, AF4138-8, AF4552-5, AF5280-5, B2869-29, B2904-2 and NY157 had especially high
total and US#1 yields. AF4138-8, AF5040-8, B2869-29, and B2904-2 had small tuber size profiles. AF4138-8,
AF4648-2, and AF5280-5 had good tuber appearance scores. Atlantic, Katahdin, Kennebec, Snowden, Yukon
Gold, AF5040-8, AF5429-3, B2869-29, B2904-2, and BNC364-1 and NY154 had especially high external defects
incidence (mostly common scab), while AF4138-8 and AF5280-5 had low incidence. Atlantc (12%), Kennebec
(15%), and Superior (10%) had high hollow heart incidence. Atlantic, Snowden, AF4552-5, AF5040-8, B2869-29,
B2904-2, and NY157 had specific gravities of 1.082 or higher. Atlantic, Snowden, Superior, AF4648-2, AF5040-8,
AF5280-5, AF5429-3, B2869-29, BNC364-1, and NY157 had the best chip colors in the trial.
Northern Aroostook County NE1231 Regional Potato Variety Trials. Yield and quality results for the
2017 NE1231 trials at St. Agatha are presented in Maine Tables 11 to 14. Atlantic, AF4552-5, AF4648-2,
AF5225-1, NY157, and NY161 had particularly good total and U.S. #1 yields in the round-white trial. Katahdin,
Superior, Yukon Gold, AF4648-2, AF5225-1, AF5429-3, and NY161 had good tuber appearance. None of the new
reds had yields exceeding the Chieftain standard, however, both of the test clones had yields that were comparable
to those of Dark Red Norland. Growth cracks and nonuniform skin color detracted from the appearance of Dark
Red Norland. AF4831-2 and AF5245-1 had good tuber appearance. Caribou Russet had particularly high total and
US#1 yields in the russet trial. Russet Burbank, Reveille Russet, Teton Russet, AF4296-3 and TX08352-5Ru also
had good yields. Russet Burbank, Shepody, and ND8068-5Rus were the only russet- or long-type clones with high
levels of external defects. Atlantic, Yukon Gold, Snowden, AF4648-2, AF5040-8, AF5429-3, and NY157 had
specific gravities of 1.084 or higher in the round-white trial. Caribou Russet, AF4296-3, and ND8068-5Rus had
specific gravities of 1.077 or higher in the russet trial. None of the clones had high levels of hollow heart at St.
Agatha. Snowden, AF5040-8, AF5280-5, AF5429-3, and NY157 had particularly good chip color.
French Fry Color and Uniformity, 2017 NE1231 Trials. Fry color and color uniformity were measured on
fresh cut tuber slabs taken from 50F storage (Table 15). Stem-end color defects were prevalent in Caribou Russet
at the Presque Isle site. Fry color was darker at the St. Agatha site and three clones (Caribou Russet, Reveille
Russet, and TX08352-5Ru) had very high stem-end defects. AF4296-3 and ND8068-5Rus produced good quality
fries at both sites. Shepody and Teton Russet produced good quality fries at only the Presque Isle site.
French Fry Processing from the 2016 Aroostook Research Farm Test. French fry color and texture
evaluations were conducted on nine 2016 NE1231 clones during winter of 2016-2017 (Table 16). Russet Burbank,
Caribou Russet, Teton Russet, and AF4296-3 had especially light fry color. Dark fry color was expecially a
problem for Reveille Russet and AF4953-6. Fries of Caribou Russet, Shepody, AF4615-5, and AF4953-6 were
non-uniform. AF4615-5 had significantly greater graying than Russet Burbank. Fries from AF4953-6 had poor
texture. Texture ratings for Caribou Russet, Reveille Russet, and Russet Norkotah were also relatively poor. Only
Teton Russet and AF4296-3 french fries were judged to be equal to Russet Burbank in overall fry quality (length,
fry color, uniformity, graying, and texture).
Aroostook Research Farm Small-scale Storage Evaluations. Data on small-scale storage and processing
characteristics were collected from 32 NE1231 varieties and clones during the 2016-2017 storage season (Maine
Tables 17 and 18). Very good chip colors were obtained from 50 F February storage for the following clones growno
at Presque Isle: AF4648-2, AF5040-8, AF5280-5, B3005-7, and NY157. Atlantic, Snowden, AF4648-2, AF5040-
8, AF5280-5, B3005-7, BNC364-1, NY154, and NY157 produced very light chips from 50 F March storage in theo
Central Maine test (Maine Table 18). In the Presque Isle test, Snowden, AF4648-2, B3005-7, BNC364-1, NY154,
and NY157 had very light chip colors directly from 45 F storage. In the Central Maine test, Snowden, B3005-7,o
BNC364-1, NY154, and NY157 produced particularly good chip colors directly from 45 F storage. None of theo
clones in the Presque Isle test produced good chips directly out of 38 F storage. B3005-7, NY154, and NY157o
produced good chips when reconditioned from cold storage. French fry processing types with relatively good
reconditioning from 38 F storage were Russet Norkotah and AF4296-3. In the Central Maine test, Snowden,o
AF5040-8, AF5280-5, B3005-7, BNC364-1, NY154, and NY157 reconditioned very nicely from 45 F storage. o
Skinning and bruise test scores for the 2016 field season are presented in Maine Table 17. The skinning
and shatter bruise scores from the bruise barrel test were presented last year. Shatter bruise susceptibility scores
were particularly good for Caribou Russet, Katahdin, Reveille Russet, Russet Norkotah, Shepody, Snowden,
AF4296-3, AF4648-2, AF4615-5, AF5280-5, B3005-7, and NY154, while they were poor for Atlantic, Dark Red
Norland, AF4138-8, AF4831-2, AF5245-1, BNC244-10, BNC364-1, CO00291-5R, and NY157. Blackspot bruise
susceptibility scores were particularly good for Kennebec, Reveille Russet, Russet Norkotah, Shepody, Teton
Russet, AF4138-8, AF4296-3, AF4648-2, AF4985-1, and AF5280-5 while they were especially poor for Atlantic,
Snowden, AF4552-5, BNC244-10, CO00291-5R, and NY157.
Chieftain, Katahdin, Kennebec, Reveille Russet, Russet Burbank, Yukon Gold, AF4138-8, AF4296-3,
AF4552-5, AF4615-5, AF4648-2, AF4985-1, AF5040-8, BNC364-1, CO00291-5R, and NY157 required at least
210 days to reach the one-half-inch sprout stage. Caribou Russet, Shepody, AF4831-2, and BNC244-10 reached the
one-half-inch sprout stage in 180 days or less. Selections with very low weight loss (<4%) from 38 F storage were:o
Chieftain, Reveille Russet, Russet Burbank, Russet Norkotah, Shepody, Teton Russet, Yukon Gold, AF4552-5, and
AF5280-5. Selections with very low weight loss (<7%) from 50 F storage were: Kennebec, Reveille Russet, Russeto
Burbank, Shepody, Yukon Gold, AF4296-3, and AF4615-5. Selections with high weight loss (15% or more) from
50 F storage were: Dark Red Norland, Katahdin, AF5040-8, AF5280-5, and BNC244-10.o
Central Maine Advanced Breeding Lines. Yield and quality results for the 2017 advanced breeding line
trials at Exeter are presented in Maine Tables 19 and 20. Clones with outstanding US#1 yields were AAF10577-1,
AF5484-3, AF5648-3, AF5682-3, AF5682-5, BNC369-4, NDAF113490C-6, NDAF113491C-6 and WAF10664-3.
Specific gravities were > 1.085 for Atlantic, AF5648-3, AF5682-3, NDAF113490C-6 and WAF10664-3. AF5635-
8 and AF5648-3 had very small tubers. Atlantic, Snowden, AF5677-4, B2834-8, NDAF113470C-3, and
WAF12065-8 had especially high levels of external defects (usually sunburn and common scab). AAF10577-1,
AF5484-3, AF5563-5, AF5635-8, AF5648-3, AF5682-3, COAF10055-6, NDAF113470C-3, NDAF113490C-6, and
WAF10664-3 had particularly good tuber appearance. Atlantic, AF5484-3, and NDAF113490C-6 had 10% or more
hollow heart. Chip color scores were generally good, however, three clones had an Agtron score below 66:
AAF10577-1, AF5484-3, and NDAF113491C-6. AF5635-8, AF5682-3, AF5682-5, BNC369-4, NDAF113470C-3,
and WAF12065-8 had especially good chip color.
Northern Aroostook County Advanced Breeding Lines. Yield and quality results for the 2017 advanced
breeding line trials at St. Agatha are presented in Maine Tables 21 to 24. Common scab was a significant problem
for some clones in this trial. Top performing clones for US#1 yields in the round-white trial were: Atlantic,
Katahdin, AAF08155-1, AF5450-7 and NDAF113458-2. Atlantic, Superior, and AF5677-6 had specific gravities
that were 1.080 or above. AF5658-6, COAF10018-2, and NDAF102629C-4 had particularly small tuber size.
COAF10018-2 had greater than 20% scab incidence. Only NDAF113458-2 (15%) had greater than 5% hollow
heart incidence in large-sized tubers. Atlantic, AF5858-6, AF5677-6, COAF10018-2, and NDAF102629C-4 had
chip color scores that were quite good (>65). AF5533-2, AF5658-2, NDAF102629C-4, and NDAF113458-2 had
particularly good tuber appearance and relatively low defects.
Of 27 russet-long clones, Russet Burbank, AAF10626-1, AF4872-2, AF5071-2, AF5164-19, AF5179-4,
AF5312-1, AF5613-3, NDAF092412-3Rus, and WAF10612-1Rus had particularly good US#1 yields. Specific
gravities were generally moderate with 11 clones >1.080 (AAF07521-1, AAF08434-1, AAF10626-1, AF4872-2,
AF5071-2, AF5406-10, AF5407-13, AF5599-5, WAF10051-1Rus, WAF10073-3Rus, WAF10509-3Rus). Four
clones had especially high external defects incidence: Shepody, AAF07521-1, AF5164-19, AF5525-2, and
WAF10051-1Rus. Very little hollow heart was observed in this trial. Five clones had better chip color scores than
both Russet Burbank and Shepody: AAF08434-1, AAF10245-1, AF4872-2, AF5625-1, WAF10051-1Rus. Russet
Norkotah, AAF08434-1, AF5071-2, AF5164-19, AF5179-4, AF5312-1, AF5406-7, AF5468-5, AF5599-5, AF5613-
3, WAF10051-1Rus, and WAF10612-1Rus had good tuber appearance ratings.
French Fry color and Uniformity, 2017 Advanced Russet Trial. Fry color and color uniformity were
measured on fresh cut tuber slabs from 27 potato clones taken from 50F storage (Table 25). Stem-end color defects
were prevalent in Russet Burbank, Russet Norkotah, AF4872-2, AF5164-19, AF5525-2, AF5522-4, and AF5625-1.

advanced breeding red- and purple-skinned line trials at Presque Isle are presented in Maine Tables 26 and 27.
BNC201-1 and NDAF102696C-5 had the best US#1 yields of the test clones. Tubers of Adirondack Red,
Adirondack Blue, AF5245-1, AF5414-1, and AF5633-2 were very small. Dark Red Norland, AF4659-12, AF5245-
1, AF5633-2, BNC201-1, and NDAF102696C-5 had the best tuber appearance scores for the red and/or speciality
markets. Only AF5412-3 had >10% external defects incidence. Hollow heart incidence was low in this experiment
with only Adirondack Blue (4.8%) having any observed incidence.
Washed Tuber Appearance Scores for Advanced Red- and Purple-skinned Breeding Clones. Of the 2016
growing season lines tested, red- and purple skinned clones with the best washed tuber appearance ratings from

Sensory Quality Evaluation of Advanced Breeding Lines from the 2016 Growing Season. Baked sensory
evaluation results from the 2016 growing season are presented in Maine Table 29. AF4138-8, AF4985-1, AF4648-
2, AF4296-3, AF4953-6, AF5245-1, AF5280-5 had acceptable baked scores when compared to standard varieties.
AF4552-5 was the only test clone that was rated poorer than the standard varieties.
Promising Selections in the 2017 NE1231 Regional Variety Trials and Advanced Selection Trials.
Selections that performed particularly well in the 2017 Maine regional and advanced trials were:
Chipping
AF4648-2 Mid-season maturity with good yields, chip color, gravity, and bruise resistance. This clone is
common scab and PVY resistant with moderate resistance to late blight, early blight, and pink rot
AF5040-8 Mid-season, high yields, high gravity, good internal quality and chip color. Susceptible to scab.
AF5040-8 is a possible alternative to Atlantic in the South and mid-Atlantic states.
AF5429-3 Medium-late maturity, high yields, medium-high gravity, good chip color, large tubers.
Verticillium and blackspot resistance, susceptible to scab.
NY157 Mid-season maturing with fair yields, moderate gravity, and good chip color. Tuber appearance
is fair to good, but it can have some hollow heart. It has good scab resistance.
Other Promising chipping candidates that will be tested again in 2018: AF5563-2 (good yields, chip,
and gravity; moderate scab, bruise, and verticillium resistance); AF5563-5 (good yields,
appearance, and chip; moderate gravity; moderate scab and bruise resistance; B2869-29 (high
yields, good gravity and chip color, scab susceptible); B2904-2 (high yields, mid-season, high
gravity, chip color to be determined, susceptible to scab); BNC369-4 (high yields, good gravity
and chip color); WAF10664-3 (high yields, good gravity and chip color).
Fresh market whites
AF4138-8 Bright appearance with slightly netted, round to oblong tubers, excellent boiled quality, early to
mid-season maturity, moderate scab resistance, and higher yields than Superior. Size profile can
be smaller than Superior.
AF4648-2 Mid-season maturity with good yields, chip color, gravity, and bruise resistance. This clone is
common scab and PVY resistant with moderate resistance to late blight and pink rot.
Susceptibility to greening was a problem in 2015 trials, while powdery scab susceptibility was a
problem in several 2016 trials.
AF5280-5 Medium early, bright, moderate scab resistance, large tubers, good internal quality. Scab, pink
rot, bruise, and golden nematode resistance.
Other Promising fresh market whites that will be tested again in 2017: AF5225-1 (high yields, cream
flesh, verticillium and bruise resistance, scab susceptible); AF5450-7 (late maturity, high yields,
verticillium, bruise, golden nematode, and scab resistance). AF5563-5 (good yields, appearance,
and chip; moderate gravity; moderate scab and bruise resistance.
Russets or Long Whites
Caribou Russet Tested as AF3362-1. A medium-late maturing, dual-purpose russet with fair to good appearance,
long to oblong tubers, low external defects, moderate specific gravity, and good fry color. It has
high yields, moderate to large tuber size, and good internal quality (except for internal heat
necrosis in southern areas). It has moderate scab resistance and is resistant to shatter and
blackspot bruise.
Reveille Russet A long-oblong russet with moderate to high yields, good appearance, and late maturity. Specific
gravity is relatively low and fry quality is not particularly good, so it will probably be useful only
for fresh market. Emergence was were slow in the St. Agatha trial during 2016.
Teton Russet A long russet with moderate to high yields, good appearance, and good processing potential. It
has moderate scab and fusarium resistance, but is reportedly susceptible to shatter bruise and
softrot. Yields have been inconsistent in our trials. Fry quality has been good.
AF4124-7 A mid-season russet with large tuber size and good processing quality. Yield, gravity, and
internal quality have been good. It is moderately resistant to common scab, blackspot bruise, and
fusarium, but is moderately susceptible to verticillium wilt.
AF4296-3 A late maturing, russet with good fry quality, fair tuber appearance, and high yields. Specific
gravity is moderate (average of 1.079 in ME trials) and fry color from storage has been good. Fry
color uniformity is very good. It is moderately susceptible to scab, but has moderate verticillium
resistance and good bruise resistance.
AF5312-1 A mid-season russet with good appearance, flavor, and fresh market potential. Yield, gravity, and
internal quality have been good. It has resistance to scab, blackspot, shatter, and fusarium.
Other Promising russet and long-white candidates that will be tested again in 2018: AF4872-2 (russet,
good yields and excellent processing quality, some oblongs); AF5071-2 (russet, good yields and
fry quality, processing, some hollow heart and off shapes, resistant to verticillium and shatter);
AF5091-8 (russet, good yields, fry processing, externals, resistant to blackspot, pink rot,
fusarium); AF5164-19 (russet, good yields, possible dual purpose, externals, resistant to
verticillium and fusarium); AF5179-4 (russet, good yields, processing, resistant to verticillium
and fusarium); AF5406-7 (russet, good yields, processing, resistant to late blight, scab,
blackspot, shatter, verticillium, fusarium, and pink rot); AF5468-5 (russet, good yields, fresh
market, resistant to scab, fusarium, and verticillium); AAF07521-1 (russet, large tubers, good
yields, processing, resistant to late blight, blackspot, fusarium, pink rot); WAF10073-3Rus
(russet, good yields, processing, resistant to scab, blackspot, shatter, fusarium); TX08352-5Ru
(mid-season, good appearance).
Reds and Specialty
AF4659-12 A yellow-fleshed “pinto-type” specialty variety with a interesting red and yellow skin pattern. It
produces small, fingerling-type tubers that are excellent roasted, boiled, or fried.
AF4831-2 Bright red skin with a smooth, attractive skin finish, small tubers that tend to be oval to oblong,
white flesh, good cooking quality, medium to medium-late vine maturity. It has moderate
resistance to scab, verticillium wilt, and blackspot bruise. Short tuber dormancy.
AF5245-1 Purple skin, white flesh, moderate common scab resistance, small tubers
NY161 Yellow skin and flesh with purple eyes, high yields, moderate scab resistance, very pretty in 2017
Maine trials, but reportedly gets a lot of growth cracks under some conditions.
Other Promising red and specialty candidates that will be tested again in 2017: AAF08155-1 (buff skin
with a purple blush, late blight resistance); AF5412-3 (purple flesh, late blight and verticillium
resistance); AF5414-1 (reddish flesh, scab resistance, moderate late blight resistance); AF5633-2
(purple flesh, round tubers, blackspot resistance); NDAF102696C-5 (red skin, pretty, small
tubers for baby red market, moderate resistance to verticillium wilt and blackspot);
NDAF113484B-1 (red skin, pretty, small tubers for baby red market, blackspot resistance);
NDAF113458-2 (buff skin with a purple blush, high yields, bruise resistance);

Center raw tuber slabs were cut from each of ten tubers. The raw slabs were fried at 375 F for 3.5 minutes, placed on a papers towel, and fry color was rated1 o
after the slices had cooled slightly. All tuber samples were stored at 50 F, 85% R.H. from harvest until processing. Frying and evaluation dates were Decembero
12 (Presque Isle) and 13 (St. Agatha).
Color Grades are from the USDA color standards chart #64-1, third edition. A weighted fry color index was calculated where 0.1=all slices were very light,2
USDA category OO and 4.0=all slices were very dark, USDA category #4. Lower indices indicate lighter color. Percentage of slices rating USDA category 0
or lighter is listed (percentage of 40 slices rated).
Fry slices were rated for color uniformity. %VG = percentage of slices out of 40 that were rated very uniform. %G= percentage of slices that were rated very3
uniform to having only slight stem end defects. %Dk. Ends = percentage of slices that had moderate to severe stem-end defects.
Notes: vde=very dark ends; sed=stem end defects; nu=non-uniform color, blotchy; col=dark fry color; sl gr = some slices with slight graying; gre = gray ends.4

Two center raw tuber slices were cut from each of ten tubers. The slices were rinsed in cool water, blanched for 8 minutes at 170 F, par-fried at 375 F for 801 o o
seconds, and quick frozen at -30 C in plastic bags. Four such replications were processed in February 2017 and held at -15 F until evaluation. Prior too o
evaluation, samples were finish-fried at 375 F for 1-3/4 minutes on April 6, 2017, blotted dry with a paper towel, and cooled for 6 minutes. Processing waso
done at the School of Food and Agriculture, University of Maine, Orono, ME (We appreciate the help of Dr. Mary Ellen Camire and her staff). All tuber
samples were stored at 50 F, 85% R.H. from harvest until processing. Percent dark = the percentage of fries that were rated in the 2 category or darker aftero
processing (out of 80 slices representing 40 tubers).
Color Grades are from USDA color standards chart #64-1, third edition. Lower indices indicate lighter color.2
Grayness indices represent weighted means derived from the following evaluation scale: 4 = no graying; 3 = slight graying; 2 = moderate graying; 1 = intense3
graying.
Mealiness indices represent weighted means using the following scale: 6=very dry and mealy; 5 = dry, mealy; 4 = mod. mealy, sl. moist; 3 = sl. mealy, mod.4
moist; 2 = soggy, not mealy; 1 = very soggy, not mealy.
Comments: Tx=soggy fry texture; Dk=dark fry color; Nu or Irr = french fries were irregular in color; dark blotches detracted from appearance of product; Be =5
Dark blotches on ends of many fries; Bc = Dark blotches in centers of many fries; Bl = general blotchy appearance of fries; Sh = Short fries from small and/or
round tubers; Gr=gray; Unif = more uniform in color than standards.
Overall rating: quality rated better (+), not different (o), or poorer (-) than Russet Burbank. 6

(Agtron, Inc., Sparks, Nevada; calibrated with black disk "0" = 0 and white disk "90" = 90). Chips were crushed and reported values are means from four
replicate samples. Each sample was read three times and was thoroughly mixed between readings. Higher numbers indicate lighter chip colors.
Reconditioned samples were taken from 38 F and placed at 65 F for a 3-week period then were chipped February 14 (mediums) or February 15 (russets), 2017. 2 o o
See Agtron description under footnote #1.
Skinning and shatter bruise were measured using a bruise barrel on September 19 (earlies, reds), September 19 (mediums), and September 29, 2016 (russets). 3
Approximately 10 lbs of tubers that exceeded 1f” diameter were tumbled in a drum with three stones for 1 minute at 15 rpm. Tubers were then rated for
combined skinning and shatter bruise. Data presented represent indices where: 1=all tubers have 0% of surface affected and 9=all tubers have 100% of
surface affected. Percentage of tubers with air and/or thumbnail cracks is reported (VS= very susceptible; S=susceptible, MS=moderately susceptible,
MR=moderately resistant; R=resistant).
Shatter and blackspot tests were conducted using the weight-drop method (12" for shatter and 6" for blackspot). The index presented indicates the severity of4
bruising/discoloration where: 1=no tubers show discoloration and 4=all tubers have severe discoloration. The shatter bruise test was conducted on December
14 to 29, 2016. The blackspot bruise test was conducted on January 25, 2017.
Tubers were stored at 45 F, 85% R.H. Days from vinekill to indicated sprout length are reported. (**no sprouting observed)5 o
Percentage sprout and weight loss following storage from harvest until March 27, 2017 at indicated temperature and 85% R.H. Codes “s” or "r" indicate6
heavily sprouted or samples with more than two spoiled tubers, respectively.

Frying and evaluations were conducted ono
December 14 and 15, 2017.
Color Grades are from the USDA color standards chart #64-1, third edition. A weighted fry color index was calculated where 0.1=all slices were very light,2
USDA category OO and 4.0=all slices were very dark, USDA category #4. Lower indices indicate lighter color. Percentage of slices rating USDA category 0 or
lighter is listed (percentage of 40 slices rated).
Fry slices were rated for color uniformity. %VG = percentage of slices out of 40 that were rated very uniform. %G= percentage of slices that were rated very3
uniform to having only slight stem end defects. %Dk. Ends = percentage of slices that had moderate to severe stem-end defects.
Notes: vde=very dark ends; sed=stem end defects; nu=non-uniform color, blotchy; col=dark fry color; sl gr = some slices with slight graying; gre = gray ends, hh4
= hollow heart defects.

Similar-sized potatoes were baked during February and March 2017 for 60 minutes at 425F and were turned once after 30 minutes. Panelists were provided with1
1/4 sections of baked test and standard variety potatoes. They were asked to rate the color, flavor, texture, and overall quality of each using a 9-point hedonic
scale where 1=disliked very much and 9=liked very much. Water was provided and panelists were asked to rinse palate before and after each sample.
Evaluations conducted courtesy of Dr. Mary Ellen Camire, School of Food & Agriculture, University of Maine, Orono, ME.
Similar-sized potatoes were peeled and boiled at 180F for approximately 20 minutes or until cooked. Approximately six potatoes per sample were used. 2
Panelists were provided with a plate of boiled test and standard variety potatoes. They were asked to visually rate sloughing and graying using a 1 to 15 scale
where: sloughing 1 = no sloughing and 15 highly sloughed; graying 1=no graying and 15 extremely gray. Evaluations conducted courtesy of Dr. Mary Ellen
Camire, School of Food & Agriculture, University of Maine, Orono, ME. Overall ratings: - is poorer, = is equal, + = better than the standard variety.
