Chandigarh RevealedLe Corbusier’s City Today

Shaun Fynn • with an Essay by Vikramāditya Prakāsh

e unlikely story of Le Corbusier and Chandigarh has proven itself to be one of modernism’s boldest experiments. Born of a vision of a modern India, Chandigarh—designed by Le Corbusier—was created as a statement for an emerging modern nation–state. Its Capitol Complex, considered by many as Le Corbusier’s masterpiece, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016.

Like all visionaries, Le Corbusier was adept at taking the iconic and symbolic and using them to fashion his own unique vocabulary. is volume explores the way in which his ideas created fertile grounds for architecture and urban planning in Chandigarh, and in India, that encapsulated the visions of the post-war and post-colonial era.

With insightful analyses of buildings across Chandigarh, the author illuminates the compositional poetry evident in Le Corbusier’s structures and the ways in which the patina of time has changed the city. A visceral journey through a remarkable modernist landscape using the photographic medium, Chandigarh Revealed pays homage to the works of a master with reflective observations of a living city.

Photographer and designer Shaun Fynn has over 20 years’ experience working with Fortune 500 companies. His work has won many awards and has been exhibited and published internationally. Vikramāditya Prakāsh, an authority on modernism and Indian architecture, teaches at the University of Washington, Seattle, and is the Director of the Chandigarh Urban Lab.

E Living Heritage of MewarArchitecture of the City Palace, Udaipur

Shikha Jain and Vanicka Arora, Preface by Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar and Foreword by Deborah Marrow, Director, The Getty Foundation

The City Palace at Udaipur is part of an exemplary living cultural heritage that has survived in an unbroken line of custodianship from medieval kingship to modern democracy. This volume traces the cultural lineage of the palace through its art and architecture to arrive at a conservation model to preserve this magnificent structure for the future.

Beginning with the historical precedents that led to the selection of Udaipur as the new capital of Mewar State, the authors trace the evolution of the palace, its sequence of inner and outer chambers and the subsequent expansions, which added Mughal and British influences to its Mewar Rajput architecture. The authors, who are also conservation scholars, have outlined in this beautifully illustrated volume a conservation master plan that combines modern and traditional methods within the context of the history, condition and conservation needs of the City Palace of Udaipur.

Shikha Jain is a founding member and Director of Preservation and Community Design at Development and Research Organisation for Nature, Arts and Heritage (DRONAH). She has extensive experience in heritage conservation and is on the Advisory Committee for World Heritage Matters to the Ministry of Culture, India. Vanicka Arora is a conservation architect and academic based in Gurgaon, India. With several years’ experience working on heritage conservation at DRONAH, she is presently involved in several such projects in Rajasthan and Punjab.

BRIGITTE SINGH

e Printress of the Mughal GardenBishwadeep Moitra

Brigitte Singh first came to Sanganer, Jaipur’s hand block-printing centre, as a student of miniatures, and today, 30 years later, the visual almanac of her work gives us a truly alternate way to read medieval and modern civilisational encounters—through the evolution and transmission of motifs and craft techniques over centuries.

Singh’s exquisite work with blockprints is a form of re-enacted design history, rendered in visual rather than textual terms. Uncovering and reaching down to the purer forms, to the composite aesthetic of the 18th century, it offers a singular source of access to a seminal epoch in design.

is volume illustrates how Singh has approached her craft with an archaeological devotion, peeling off dusty layers from the long-obscured story of blockprinting in the subcontinent. Her work yields a truly Indian aesthetic, fully formed and yet open to influences, full of grand narratives but so dense with detail and meaning that in every telling, something new and essential is revealed both to the raconteur and the audience.

With Introduction by Laila Tyabji, and contributions by Jasleen Dhamija, Rosemary Crill, Jacqueline omé Jacqué, Michel Biehn, Sheela Reddy, Paola Manfredi, Chandramani Singh, Sunil Menon and Aleta Bartel.

Bishwadeep Moitra has spent more than two decades in photography, art design and journalism. He is widely travelled and has won many awards. His other passion is yoga.

Courtyard Houses of IndiaYatin Pandya

Indian architecture is not about an object in space; instead it integrates space within the object where the built and the unbuilt become counterpoints to vitalize each other. is engulfed void known as the courtyard lies at the genesis of urban dwellings in India. In this book the author traces the metaphysical, mythical, socio-cultural, environmental and spatial roles of the courtyard in the domestic architecture of India—from early civilization and Vedic times to Islamic and colonial influences.

is book documents traditional courtyard dwelling types across India within diverse climatic, cultural as well as geographic zones such as West (Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra), South (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa), East (Bihar, West Bengal), Central (Madhya Pradesh) and North (Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir). Courtyard Houses of India documents, analyses and infers the attributes and manifestations of traditional courtyard houses and examines the diverse interpretations of those as applied in contemporary homes.

Yatin Pandya is a practising architect with his firm FOOTPRINTS E.A.R.T.H. He is the author of several books, including Concepts of Space in Traditional Indian Architecture (Mapin) and Elements of Spacemaking (Mapin) for which he has won the IIA Award for Excellence in Architecture in Research category in 2012 and 2014, respectively.

Published in association with FOOTPRINTS E.A.R.T.H. and Vastu-Shilpa Foundation.

Celebrating Public Spaces of IndiaArchana Gupta and Anshuman Gupta with Foreword by Dr. Devdutt Pattanaik

Celebrating Public Spaces of India is an attempt at understanding architecture as a defining feature in the identity of the ‘public space’ and its influence on evolving modes of urbanism in India. rough a carefully curated list of more than fifty vibrant landmarks across the length and breadth of India, this volume analyses and highlights the socio-cultural-functional strength of public spaces within the urban fabric of cities.

Featuring evocative photographs and drawings, this volume strives to understand the mechanics of these built and open structures, and their influences on urban cityscapes. With insightful original research, the book is an invaluable resource for anyone wishing to understand the nature of the Indian urban public space.

Archana Gupta, co-founder of e Foundation of e Indian Cities, is the Vice-President (Projects) for KPDK Buildtech Pvt. Ltd. An architect and teacher, she is experienced in service architecture and infrastructure development, and has to her credit several publications and research projects relating to studies of traditional and vernacular Indian settlements.

Anshuman Gupta, co-founder of e Foundation of e Indian Cities, works as Vice-President, Head of Projects (South Asia), at Deutsche Bank AG. An architect and an accomplished corporate real estate professional, he has travelled and worked across India. A strong proponent of the sustainable approach to design, he spares time to research and write about urbanization and cities.

Published in association with e Foundation of e Indian Cities.

Wooden Architecture of KeralaMiki Desai

It was in the late 1960s and ’70s that the author, then a student of architecture, first encountered built environments belonging to the genres of folk or vernacular traditions. e persistent exclusion of these traditions from the modern urban vision compelled the author to document these styles, culminating in this book on the wooden architecture of Kerala.

is book explores the socio-cultural and the tectonic aspects of Kerala’s wooden architecture, which is deeply rooted in religious and secular customs and shaped by geo-climatic forces. e author’s multi-disciplinary approach links the various ethnic groups residing in Kerala, and the mutual adoption and adaptation of construction systems within migrant groups.

Despite being a living tradition serving millions of people, vernacular architecture in India has not received the academic and analytical attention it deserves. is volume attempts to fill this research gap, a need made more urgent by the fact that the built environment is changing and the traditional ways of building may get replaced by the modern much faster than we can imagine.

A graduate of the University of Texas, Miki Desai is a recipient of the Fulbright Fellowship, 2000, and the Graham Grant, 2005. He is the author of Architekture in Gujarat, Indien: Bauernhof, Stadthaus, Palast, and the co-author of Architecture and Independence: e Search for Identity: India 1880 to 1980. He received the Earthwatch fellowship in 1996. He has taught and lectured at many universities in Europe and the USA.

The Architecture of Hasmukh C. PatelSelected Projects 1963–2003

Catherine Desai and Bimal Patel

Hasmukh Patel’s architectural practice spanned the transformative latter decades of the 20th century, navigating the political and economic changes of his time and bringing his talents to bear equally on institutional, private and speculative development projects. He recognised that with every commission came opportunities to further architecture’s formal, civic and social agendas.

Each of his projects is a built manifesto, an exploration of how architecture might enrich the lives of India’s modernising citizens. His buildings belong to a deep tradition of 20th-century modernist thinking, where the legibility of the architectural diagram is a primary concern. Included here are 51 of his buildings, many documented for the first time. is book is both a tribute to Hasmukh Patel and a gathering of a canon of works to inspire and inform the next generation.

With contributions by Catherine Desai, Bimal Patel, Christopher Benninger, Ismet Khambatta, Bobby Desai, Arindam Dutta and Rahul Mehrotra.

Catherine Desai is an architect and graduate of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Her knowledge of modern Indian buildings encompasses both well known and obscure work and she is an advocate for the preservation of India’s modern architectural heritage. Bimal Patel is an architect, urban planner and academic, with numerous award-winning projects to his credit. He is President of CEPT University, and heads HCP Design, Planning and Management Pvt. Ltd.

Water Treasures of the HimalayasSerge Verliat and Jean Philippe

A billion lives depend on the waters of the Himalayas; sixty million live in this mountain range, while the rest live in its foothills, on the plains of the Indian subcontinent. Despite their astonishing diversity, all these peoples share the common belief that this is a ‘Sacred Land’, and this mountain range is, above all, the ‘Abode of Snow’ where pure water springs, rivers gush and lakes are crystal-clear.

Born from the eternal snows, in the most mystical land on earth, water perfectly embodies the essence of purity. In this mosaic of peoples, languages, religions and lands, it plays a vital part in the geographical distribution of the various ethnic groups, their social organization and the way they see themselves.

is volume offers a complete view of the great Himalayan mountain range by taking an itinerary which follows the water and contrasts the two flanks of this formidable climatic barrier. It also offers an anthropological insight into the various bonds formed between man and water in the Himalayas.

Serge Verliat is a Professor of geography in Reunion Island, France, and author of several research papers on the Himalayas since 1980. He has made several documentaries and films, including Living in the Himalayas and e Himalayas: Condences of Water. Jean Philippe, a photographer, has exhibited at the Museum of Man in Paris in 1995 as part of the exhibition ‘Reunion Island: Two Viewpoints’. He is also the author of two specialized works on the Cilaos Cirque in Reunion Island.

A Walking Tour: AhmedabadSketches of the City’s Architectural Treasures

Matthijs van Oostrum and Dr. Gregory Bracken

The Walking Tour City Guide series provides an engaging bridge between conventional tourist books that contain less information on architecture and academic books that are often too specialized. A Walking Tour: Ahmedabad—the first to focus on an Indian city—provides hand-drawn illustrations, taking the reader from building to building, providing information on its history, architectural styles, its owners and architects.

Focusing on the blend of medieval and modern architecture in Ahmedabad, the authors explore the magnificent old city and the historic pol houses. They also shed light on the buildings built by modern masters such as Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn. From havelis and temples, to mosques, markets, and buildings made possible because of Mahatma Gandhi, the authors provide a lively, illustrated tour through this city which has seen Mughal, Maratha and British influences in its culture, food and architecture.

Matthijs van Oostrum graduated summa cum laude from TU Delft in the Netherlands, with a masters in Urbanism. After graduation, he has worked on several projects at the office of Balkrishna Doshi, one of India’s most distinguished architects, in Ahmedabad. Dr. Gregory Bracken, Assistant Professor of Architecture at the TU Delft in the Netherlands, is the author and illustrator of the Walking Tour City Guide series. He worked for several years as an architect in Asia, and has authored several books and articles on the architectural facets of Asian cities.

My Sweet HomeChildhood Stories from a Corner of the City

Samina Mishra and Sherna Dastur with the Children of Okhla

My Sweet Home captures Okhla, a suburban colony in South Delhi, from the perspective of 20 children who live there. e children have written and created art about their homes, terraces, mosques, and the villages that their families come from, in a workshop conducted by the authors. is volume brings to light the many stories from this teeming, thriving corner of Delhi, often bypassed in common discourses on the city.

My Sweet Home also tries to resolve the many misunder-standings that people have of the place as a Muslim ghetto, through the experiences of some of its younger residents. ese stories and drawings reflect the relationships that the children have with their neighbourhood and prompt an intangible connection between the reader—across region, religion, nationality—and this misunderstood, misrepresented neighbourhood.

Samina Mishra is a documentary filmmaker, writer and teacher, currently with Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi. She also conducts workshops with children and has authored the children’s book Hina in the Old City. Sherna Dastur is a graduate of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. Some of her documentary work includes Safdar Hashmi (2000), Rah Bahari (1997), and Jungle Bolta Hai (1994).

Paper JewelsPostcards from the Raj

Omar Khan

Postcards were to people in 1900 what the Internet was to the world in 2000. Postcards can be thought of as the world’s first mass transfusion of images. e world went from thousand to a billion postcards in a very short span of time, with the finest painters from India, Austria and Japan getting involved.

Paper Jewels is the story of postcards during the Raj, and covers India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Burma. It is the first book on the subject and contains some of the most beautiful and popular postcards telling the stories of the first postcard publishers between 1892 and 1947. e essays cover the major cities and regions important to postcard publishing and the key themes—from dancers to religion, to tea, soap, famines, fakirs, humour and warfare.

e volume uncovers such gems as the early postcards of the great Indian painter M V Dhurandhar and the Ravi Varma Press, the exceptional work of an early Austrian lithographer in Kolkata and a German one in Mumbai. Many of the images in the book have never been published since their first runs a century ago.

Omar Khan grew up in Vienna, Austria, and Islamabad, Pakistan. Khan has researched early photography throughout the subcontinent and is the author of From Kashmir to Kabul: e Photographs of John Burke and William Baker 1860–1900 (Mapin). He works as a software executive in San Francisco.

e Uprising of 1857Edited by Rosie Llewellyn-Jones

e ‘sepoy revolt’ was among the first fully photographed wars in the history of documentary photography in India. is volume offers multiple perspectives on the ‘Ghadar’ or Uprising of 1857, and deconstructs the grand narratives associated with colonial historiography. Using rare archival material from the Alkazi Collection, together with supplementary visuals, these essays re-evaluate the official reading of the Uprising.

Linked accounts negotiate ‘Mutiny’ landscapes and architecture: the internal dynamic of the rebellion decoded through topography and monuments. Along with rebels, British troops and their determined generals, and various professional and amateur photographers, the dramatic vista of the Uprising in these essays is also inhabited by a range of significant characters central to the action, including the warrior queen Lakshmi Bai, the exiled last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar and the poet Mirza Ghalib.

With contributions by Rosie Llewellyn-Jones, Shahid Amin, Zahid Chaudhary, Susan Gole, Mahmood Farooqui, Nayanjot Lahiri, Tapti Roy, Stephanie Roy Bharath and Andrew Ward.

Rosie Llewellyn-Jones read Urdu and Hindi at the School of Oriental & African Studies. She has written extensively on India during the colonial period, and edited Lucknow, City of Illusion, the first book in the ACP series (2006). She is the Secretary of the British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia and the editor of its journal, Chowkidar.

Humayun’s Tomb ConservationAga Khan Trust for Culture

The Humayun’s Tomb-Nizamuddin area, inhabited by a vibrant local community, is visited by millions of tourists and pilgrims each year. Conservation works being undertaken on the monuments in this area have aimed to redefine standard conservation practice in India by setting benchmarks in using a craft-based approach, setting documentation standards, using a participatory and multi-disciplinary approach, and using the conservation initiative as a tool towards improving quality of life for local communities.

This book aims to inform the general public about the discipline of conservation and the rationale behind the successful conservation initiative and makes an argument for change in conservation approaches in India —from isolated monuments to an urban approach that includes concern for the setting; from a ‘tender-based’ approach to a quality-concerned method, amongst other factors.

Founded and guided by His Highness the Aga Khan, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture through its various projects promotes the conservation and reuse of buildings and public spaces in historic cities in ways that can spur social, economic and cultural development.

Beyond KanchenjungaLife and Culture in Northeast India

Dipti Bhalla and Shiv Kunal Verma

Journeying eastward from the massif of Kanchenjunga that dominates the Indo-Nepal border, the authors take us through Sikkim, North Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh before moving southwards along the Naga Patkai range and the hill states of Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram, coming to a halt in Tripura.

With stunning visuals of the Great Himalayas, including Kanchenjunga National Park, now a World Heritage Site, the authors knit together a comprehensive picture of India’s northeastern-most corner, home to indigenous people like the Sherdukpen, the Monpa, the Aka, the Nyishi, the Adi, the Mishmi, the Nocte and Wancho, the Lai and Mara, and the Naga, Kuki and Mizo—diverse peoples with distinct culture. This volume weaves geography with history, myths of origin with daily life, and religion with culture to produce a seminal volume in the documentation of India’s little-known northeast.

Dipti Bhalla is an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India and the Australian Film School, Sydney. Besides co-authoring the Northeast Trilogy, she has produced, directed and edited some of the most highly acclaimed films on the Indian Armed Forces. Shiv Kunal Verma is a filmmaker and a writer, and the author of The Long Road to Siachen and 1962 – The War That Wasn’t, as well as the highly acclaimed Northeast Trilogy, a seminal work that for the first time documented the entire eastern region of India.

Mughal TileworkA Craft Revival

Aga Khan Trust for Culture

e tradition of using glazed tiles as a decorative element of building architecture by the Mughals can be traced to the crafts of Iran, which governed the tastes of the eastern Islamic world. ere is a profusion of tilework on monuments like Humayun’s Tomb, Isa Khan’s tomb and mosque, Nila Gumbad and Atgah Khan’s tomb amongst others. The tilework on the canopies has however suffered over the years on account of degradation of clay body, glaze or carrier.

is volume presents the results of the three years of research and the new approach to conservation that has been outlined here and never before been implemented anywhere. It also illustrates the significance of glazed tiles in Mughal-era buildings; the design and aesthetic philosophy employed in the conservation of the tilework on the canopies; various steps of the restoration works and process documentation of achieving the final colour of the tiles.

Stone CraftsmanshipConservation & Possibilities

Aga Khan Trust for Culture

Over a hundred stone craftsmen have worked for over three years on the Humayun’s Tomb conservation project. ey have used the same tools and techniques that would have been used by craftsmen who built the Tomb in the 16th century. ough sandstone craft skills survive in India, the building craft sector has not received the attention that has been paid to the handicraft sector though more people can find employment in the building sector industry.

Conservation of Mughal heritage in India can only be carried out if skills survive, yet the conservation effort is not yet of a quantum to keep thousands employed. is documentary-publication aims at allowing architects, sculptors, artists, and engineers the systems, tools, techniques, process and benefits that handcrafting stone elements brings. Cost, quality, and ageing comparisons with machine-cut stone show how handcrafted stonework can have favourable cost benefit.

Lime MortarA Traditional Building Craft

Aga Khan Trust for Culture

Prior to the invention of cement, lime mortar was the predominant building material for the monumental buildings in India. Following modern practices, disruption of traditional conservation systems, and the availability of cement in the 20th century, most buildings were repaired with cement. ough these repairs were carried out with good intentions, they accelerated the decay process.

Use of lime mortar in conservation works is essential as it is the original building material and, if well prepared, lime mortar survives for centuries as it returns to its natural state of limestone. is volume relays the knowledge accumulated through training workshops—attended by conservation professionals from across India—to engineers, conservation professionals, and architects in an illustrated manner. It establishes best practices, lists specifications for different circumstances, and conveys the need to use lime mortar for conservation.

Commissioned by Hindu temples, and by individuals for religious use, the hangings were produced in the kalamkari style of hand drawing, mordant-dyeing and painting. Striking in artistry, and imposing in size, these hangings represent a complex technique that reached its highest expression in southern India.

Traditional Indian architecture has ably demonstrated its universality and validity within multiple value systems. This is achieved essentially by relying on spatial experiences derived through dynamic perceptions of space while in movement—its kinesthetics. This book is an attempt at understanding the very roots of what constitutes the Indian context by examining its notions of time, space and existence.

The notions of space are made physically manifest in architecture through different elements that constitute the basic identifiable parts of the man-made or built environment. This book examines the inherent attributes of ‘spacemaking’ elements like roofs, walls, doors, windows, and floors and analyses their implicit influences in the design of space. It traces the evolution of each element through history, and provides extensive drawings and sketches of detailed case studies from all over the world.

Mapping with FiguresThe Evolving Art of KS Radhakrishnan

R Siva Kumar

KS Radhakrishnan is an acclaimed contemporary sculptor whose sculptures are exclusively executed in the medium of bronze. His

intervention in the revival of the figurative tradition in Indian sculptural parlance, with an emphasis on the body, has been acknowledged as a significant art historical milestone. Trained under modernists like Ramkinkar Baij and Sarbari Roy Choudhury, Radhakrishnan has developed an inimitable style which emphasises fluid, dynamic body types using two characters—Musui and Maiya.

R Siva Kumar’s informative essay on the sculptural journey of KS Radhakrishnan is an art historical gem for serious lovers of art.

Reverie with RazaOn the Occasion of Nirantar: The Aesthetic Continuum

Uma Nair

is book unravels the workings of Syed Haider Raza’s oeuvre at the age of 94, shortly before his demise. e author explores the

revolution in Raza’s work– plumbing the past in his use of colour, in contextualizing genres in his journey of the ‘Bindu’, and in explaining intuitive strategies that reflect his journeys. The Bindu too has transformed through decades—it signifies a different tenor in a world torn by terrorism and death.

Illustrated with Raza’s astonishing paintings, this volume discusses the verbal and visual dynamics of his work over the past two years, and pays homage to this modern master.
