Our new brand essence demonstrates
how G.I.R.L. experiences and skills
create our idea of leadership—leadership,
the Girl Scout way—through everything
we do.
Girl Scouts practice leadership with grit
like a go-getter, problem solve like an
innovator, embrace new challenges like
a risk-taker, and show empathy like a
leader.
Just imagine the possibilities.

Dear Friends and Supporters of Girl Scouting:
Our council is fortunate to have amazing volunteers and supporters
who do all they can to help Girl Scouts Louisiana East thrive and
succeed. When you volunteer your time or financially support a girl’s
participation in Girl Scouts, you are setting her up for a bright future.
Take pride in being a part of the best leadership experience in the
world – one that unleashes the G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™ in every girl, preparing her for a lifetime of leadership.
For 105 years we have prioritized and focused on girls, providing them
with an all-girl, girl-led, and girl-friendly space that empowers them
to take the lead in all aspects of their lives. Whether it’s by exploring
the outdoors, developing strong relationships with family and peers,
advocating on behalf of others, protecting our environment, creating
their own business, or examining careers that can truly change the
world for the better, girls gain the skills and the inspiration to accept
challenges, overcome obstacles, and take the lead.
In Girl Scouts, girls find a safe haven — a girl-inclusive space where
they’re free to be themselves. This safe space offered by Girl Scouts
fosters collaboration and promotes support among girls, enabling them
to stretch beyond their limits.
Please take a moment to review highlights in our annual Report to
the Community, along with our financial information and the names
of those who support us and our mission financially. We appreciate
all who partner with us to make a difference in the lives of girls. We
are inspired by your dedication, and thank you for your renewed
commitment to the girls of southeast Louisiana.

Over 13,000 girls and 5,500 adults in southeast
Louisiana were active Girl Scouts, committed to
living by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girl Scouts
unleashes the G.I.R.L. (Go-
getter, Innovator, Risk-taker,
and Leader)tm in every girl,
preparing her for a lifetime
of leadership—making our
program the best leadership
experience for girls in the
world, created specifically
with and for girls.
Over 7,700 individuals participated in council-
sponsored programs held across our 23-parish
jurisdiction, including 250 Girl Scouts and family
members at the fifth annual Thin Mint Sprint 5K and
1 Mile Daisy Dash,
and approximately
1,000 in attendance
at the Believe in
G.I.R.L. (B.I.G.) event
at the University of
New Orleans.
The Girl Scout Cookie Program celebrated its
Centennial, marking 100 years of Girl Scouts selling
cookies. Locally, Girl
Scouts demonstrated
their entrepreneurial
skills by selling over
1 million boxes of
cookies. A record 312
Girl Scouts entered
our Cookie Hall of Fame for selling 500+ boxes of
cookies, including 45 girls who sold over 1,000 boxes.
Top seller was Girl Scout Cadette Madelyn Foster of
Denham Springs who sold 1,751 boxes! A friends and
family Product Sale of nuts, candy, and magazines
continues to support troops who wish to earn start-
up money for their troop each fall, with online sales
increasing yearly.
Girls spent more time outdoors, with over 7,350
individuals utilizing the council’s three camp
properties and one in-town cabin for troop and
community camping.
Approximately 1,324 girls became Girl Scouts
through Alternative Program Delivery programs held
at schools, churches, and housing authority sites in
Baton Rouge and New Orleans as well as through the
Girl Scouts Beyond Bars program, thanks to funding
from the Joe W. & Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation,
Capital One,
Entergy, Happy
Black Woman,
and the Huey
& Angelina
Wilson
Foundation.
At the council
annual meeting, 11 volunteers, one religious leader
and four school principals received council-level
recognition for their commitment to Girl Scouts.
Thirteen Girl Scout Communities were recognized for
achieving their Annual Family Giving goals.

Preparing girls for a lifetime of leadership!
In June a “Man Enough to be a Girl Scout” Day was
held at Fontainebleau State Park featuring nature
walks, a knot-tying challenge and other outdoor
activities that offered
opportunities for girls to bond
with their male role models.
Guest speaker for the day was
Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser.
Additional Man Enough
events have been planned for
2018.
In 2017, seven Girl Scout Ambassadors earned the
Girl Scout Gold Award, 52 Girl Scout Cadettes earned
the Girl Scout Silver Award, and 140 Girl Scout Juniors
earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award. The Gold Award
Girl Scouts were recognized during a reception and
pinning ceremony at the Governor’s Mansion.
Girl Scout Ambassador Jordan Williams of Covington
was selected for Girl Scouts of the USA’s G-Team,
the girl
planning
team for
the G.I.R.L.
2017
Convention
in Ohio.
Jordan
and her
teammates worked hard for 18 months to create all of
the fun and entertaining events at the convention in
October.

Survivor! was the
theme for our 2017
Resident Camp which
was enjoyed by 667
campers at Camps
Covington, Marydale,
and Whispering
Pines. Our camps
once again received
ACA accreditation
from the American Camp Association. Accreditation
means that each camp undergoes a thorough review
process by outside camp professionals in the areas if
personnel, program, site administration and health
care.
Over 375 campers attended seven volunteer-directed
summer day camps (which included a STEM-
related one) held across
southeast Louisiana.
A total of 434 girls
participated in summer
camp programs in
collaboration with New
Orleans Recreation
Development and BREC.
Council staff
participated in Sandler sales training, whose
methodology is founded on basic principles of the
psychology of human behavior. The Sandler method
is now part of our recruiting process.

Three adult fundraisers were held, including the
first Juliette Low Leadership Luncheon held in New
Orleans on the Girl Scout founder’s birthday, October
31. The annual Women of Distinction luncheon is
held each spring in Baton Rouge, with 38 women
honored thus far since the luncheon’s inception in
2012.
Our retail team was
recognized by Girl
Scouts of the USA for
increased online and
in-store sales along
with achieving other
retail and council
goals. We were only
seven councils to
achieve all four
benchmarks set
nationally.
Nine First LEGO League robotics teams participated
in qualifying tournaments with all four of the
advancing teams winning awards at the state
tournament. Our GSLE-Houma team received the
Core Values Teamwork
Award along with
being in the Top 16 for
Robot Performance,
GSLE Norco team
won the Gracious
Professionalism Award,
GSLE-BR team won for
Strategy and Innovation,
and the GSLE Slidell
Team won the Project Research trophy. The Slidell
and Baton Rouge teams have been invited to
compete nationally in California in 2018.
Alums in the council’s FOREVER Girl Scouts club
enjoyed both winter and fall adult camping weekends
at Camps Whispering Pines and Marydale. The
weekends provide the perfect opportunity to
reconnect with old friends, make new ones, and enjoy
the camps’ many amenities.
Juliette Gordon Low Leadership honorees included: Dr. Cynthia Thomas, President of Dominican High School; Outstanding Woman; Dr. Michelle Sanchez and Dr. Donata Henry of Girls In STEM (GIST) at Tulane University, Outstanding Business/Educators; Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser, Outstanding Man; Sandra Holub of the Albemarle Foundation, Outstanding Business/Foundation; and Margie Loud Zeno, Minnie Finley Award.
