There’s no arguing that 2016 was in fact the best season in program history, as the team set program records for overall wins (12 – three more than the previous record), win percentage (.571 – close to 150 percentage points higher than the previous record) and Big Sky wins (5). Additionally, then-sophomore Nathan Boniel put together the best individual season in pro- gram history while setting five single-season school records, including the records for overall singles wins (19), overall singles win percentage (.950, 19-1) and Big Sky singles wins (9). For his efforts, Boniel was named the 2016 Big Sky MVP, the first Viking to ever be so honored. That’s a tough act to follow, but even as good as 2016 was, there was one achievement that escaped the 2016 Vikings, as the team fell just short of earning the program’s first-ever berth into the Big Sky tournament. That achievement remains out there for the 2017 Vikings, but will be a tough ask for a group that has to replace four seniors – three of which were four-year starters – even as Boniel re- turns for his junior season. “We graduated four amazing seniors last season in Brent Wheeler, Wil Cochrane, Ian Risenhoover and Nacor Ibanez,” PSU head coach Toby Krauel said. “This season will be interesting to see how we blend our very experienced players with five relative newcomers to college tennis. What I do know is these guys compete hard and compete with class. They feed off and learn from Boniel.” Boniel will be a much-needed luxury for the young Vikings, who lost three of the most-experienced players in program history in Wheel- er, Cochrane and Risenhoover last season. All three left the program ranked in the top 10 all-time in singles wins, while Risenhoover and Wheeler left the program ranked first and second, respectively, in dou- bles wins, with Cochrane not far behind in a tie for fifth all-time. Additionally, Risenhoover left the program as the all-time leader in Big Sky singles wins (15) and Big Sky doubles wins (20), as well as the career leader in wins at No. 6 singles (10) and wins at No. 2 doubles (20). Wheeler, for his part, left the program as half of the winningest doubles team in program history, as he and current senior Ethan Lopez won 22 matches in their Portland State careers. The Vikings brought in three true freshmen to help replace the depart- ed seniors, and also return Yousef Abdo as a redshirt freshman, after he sat out last season. Russell Risenhoover – the younger brother of Ian Risenhoover – also returns as a sophomore, after he played the latter half of the 2016 season. Tommy Edwards had the strongest fall of the incoming freshman, as he made the championship match of the singles B flight at the 2016 Bulldog Classic, a tournament at which he also won the consolation doubles title with Boniel. “Tommy had a great fall and he’s a player who improves every week,” Krauel said. “He is an amazing tennis player. He has a big serve, great groundstrokes, and competes very hard. I love the way he plays and how he plays with confidence.” Majeed Bukhari and Sam Larson join Edwards as true freshmen this season, and Bukhari made the consolation final of singles flight B at the Bulldog Classic. “Russell, Majeed, Sam and Yousef will all see a lot of playing time as we work through some in- juries,” Krauel said. “They all work extremely hard and I am confident they can all contribute.” The Vikings will certainly need all of their younger players to contribute if they are going to make the Big Sky tournament this season, and fortunately, the young players have three good VIKINGS TASKED WITH FOLLOWING UP BEST SEASON IN PROGRAM HISTORY IN 2017 BIG SKY STANDINGS CONTACT: Andy Jobanek [email protected] 503-725-2525 (O) 541-968-8702 (C) PLAYER TO WATCH Nathan Boniel Junior • Sydney, Australia • Campbellsville University NOTES: • 2016 Big Sky MVP • Broke five single- season school records last season when he went 19-1 overall, all at line one • 2016 Bulldog Classic Singles A Champion • 2016 Dar Walters Fall Classic Singles A Finalist

2017 SCHEDULE

PORTLAND, Ore. — The inevitable question awaits the 2017 Portland State men’s tennis team: how do you follow up the best season in program history?

There’s no arguing that 2016 was in fact the best season in program history, as the team set program records for overall wins (12 – three more than the previous record), win percentage (.571 – close to 150 percentage points higher than the previous record) and Big Sky wins (5). That’s a tough act to follow, but even as good as 2016 was, there was one achievement that escaped the 2016 Vikings, as the team fell just short of earning the program’s first-ever berth into the Big Sky tournament.

That achievement remains out there for the 2017 Vikings, but will be a tough ask for a group that has to replace four seniors – three of which were four-year starters – even as Boniel re-turns for his junior season.

“We graduated four amazing seniors last season in Brent Wheeler, Wil Cochrane, Ian Risenhoover and Nacor Ibanez,” PSU head coach Toby Krauel said. “This season will be interesting to see how we blend our very experienced players with five relative newcomers to college tennis. examples to turn to in the team’s three more experienced players in Boniel, Lopez and senior Scott Goldner.

Like the team as a whole, Boniel has a tough act to follow after his dominant 2016 season in which his only loss of the season came in three sets, and he even led that match in the third set.

Boniel got off to a good start during the 2016 fall season, however, as he won the singles flight A title at the 2016 Bulldog Classic, and also made the champion match of the singles A flight at the 2016 Dar Walters Fall Classic.

“Nathan is the best player in the Big Sky Conference and gives our team a chance to win any match,” Krauel said. “He hits such a huge ball it is very difficult for his opponents to catch up to the speed of his power.

“Nathan is continually working to improve his game, strength, fitness and mental toughness. When I tell the team to sprint four courts and jog back, Nathan will sprint down and back. When I tell them the losing team does 25 push-ups, Nathan, even when he wins, will do the 25 push-ups.”

About the only area of Boniel’s game that wasn’t invincible last season was doubles, where he still finished with a 9-7 record during the dual season, including a 5-3 record in Big Sky match-es. Still, Krauel said Boniel focused on improving his doubles game during the off-season, and that work paid off in the fall.

Boniel and Edwards went 6-2 together as a doubles team during the fall season, which includ-ed the consolation doubles title at the Bulldog Classic. Boniel and Edwards also took Oregon’s Thomas Laurent and Cormac Clissold to the wire in the semifinals of their home tournament, the Duck Invitational, before losing, 8-6.

Additionally, Boniel was invited to the prestigious Oracle ITA Masters, where he and Idaho’s Marianna Petrei – the 2016 Big Sky women’s MVP – upset a mixed doubles team out of the Pac-12 in Nick Crystal of USC and Denise Starr of Cal. Both Crystal and Starr entered the match ranked in the top 10 nationally in men’s and women’s doubles, while Starr was part of the doubles team that finished runners-up at last year’s NCAA national tournament.

Still, the Vikings will need help behind Boniel to make the Big Sky tournament, and Goldner and Lopez will be counted on to lead that effort.

Goldner inserted himself as a reliable No. 2 behind Boniel in the Vikings’ lineup last season before getting hurt during the Vikings’ match against Swarthmore on March 8.

Goldner’s injury was the tipping point for the Vikings’ season last year, as the team was poised to make the Big Sky tournament at 11-3 overall and 5-2 in Big Sky play at the time of the injury, but lost their next six matches to fall out of tournament contention.

Goldner sat out the fall as he continues to recover from injuries, but is back practicing for the Vikings.

“Scott is playing incredibly well considering he had to take two months off following his wrist injury,” Krauel said. “He has a huge serve, great net game, and with his wrist healing, his two-handed backhand will be back in full swing.”

Lopez, meanwhile, had an up-and-down season last year, as he started the dual season 10-4, but then lost his last six matches after the injury to Goldner.

Lopez was an All-Big Sky honorable mention in 2015, however, when he set the single-season record for Big Sky singles wins at seven, which Boniel broke last season. Lopez also set the single-season record for win percentage at No. 2 singles that year at .727, and has the chance to take over the all-time lead in overall singles wins and Big Sky singles wins this season. Lopez needs only seven wins to match the career record for overall singles wins this season, and just four Big Sky singles wins to match the career record in that category.

FOURTH SEASON • PORTLAND, 1990 • 24-38 OVERALL RECORD • 11-21 BIG SKY RECORD Krauel enters his fourth season at the helm of the PSU men’s tennis program during the 2016-17 academic year, after taking over as the men's tennis program's first exclusive head coach before the 2013-14 season. Krauel led the Vikings to their best sea-son in program history in 2016, as the Vi-kings set records for overall wins (12), Big Sky Conference wins (5) and overall win percentage (.571) during the season. Krauel also led Nathan Boniel to the best individual season in program history in 2016, after which Boniel became the Viking men's tennis program's first-ever Big Sky Conference MVP, as well as just the second All-Big Sky first-team selection in program history in 2016. Boniel earned the post-sea-son honors after going 19-1 overall during the 2016 spring season, including a 9-1 re-cord in Big Sky play. Boniel's 19 wins, all of which came at line one, set new program records for overall wins and wins at No. 1 singles, in both cases beating the old record of 15 that Chris Rice set in 2009. Boniel's nine Big Sky wins also broke the single-sea-son program record, while his 19-1 record also gave him the program records for over-all win percentage (.950) and win percent-age at No. 1 singles (.950). Boniel's .950 win percentage crushed the old record of .652 that Rice set with a 15-8 record in 2009. Besides Boniel, Krauel also led Ian Ris-enhoover to the all-time lead in overall doubles wins in 2016, as he finished his ca-reer with 39, one ahead of teammate Brent Wheeler at 38. Risenhoover also broke the career record for Big Sky singles wins in 2016 (15), while Wheeler joined Ethan Lo-pez in breaking the overall record for wins by a doubles team with 22 together. Krauel layed the foundation for the record-breaking 2016 season in his second year at the school, as he led the Vikings to a series of historic accomplishments in 2015. Krauel led the Vikings to four Big Sky wins during the season, tying a then-program record set in 2010. Krauel also guided the Vikings to their first-ever wins over Mon-tana and Sacramento State during the sea-son, and helped Lopez set the single-season program record for win percentage at No. 2 singles (.727), and a then-record for Big Sky singles wins with seven.

HEAD COACH TOBY KRAUEL“Ethan is playing well right now and I expect him to have a great senior year,” Krauel said. “He’s 100 percent healthy and hitting more aggressively than last year.”

Health will be a major factor for the Vikings this season, and the schedule should help the Vikings more than it did last year. The Vikings play 18 matches this season as opposed to the 21 matches they played last year, and do not play more than twice during any five-day period.

And if the Vikings can stay healthy, then 2017 just might eclipse 2016, and then the 2018 Vi-kings could be facing the same inevitable question of: how do you follow up the best season in program history?

SCOUTING PORTLAND:• The Portland Pilots open their 2017 dual season against the Vikings on Friday. The Pilots are coming off a standout 2016 season in which they went 16-8 and advanced to the semifinals of the West Coast Conference Championships. The Pilots’ eight losses all came to teams ranked among the top 75 in the ITA rankings, and the Pilots beat four ranked teams as well.• The Pilots return all eight letterwinners off of last year’s team, and still only have one senior on their 11-player roster.• The Pilots return No. 1 singles player Michail Pervolarakis, who finished last year 13-6 at line one. One of Pervolarakis’ losses came to Portland State junior Nathan Boniel in both team’s season opener. Boniel and Pervolarakis went to three sets when they played last season, with Boniel winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Boniel and Pervolarakis also played during the 2015 fall season, however, and Pervolarakis won that, 6-1, 6-3.• Pervolarakis ranks 66th nationally in singles entering the 2017 season, and also ranks eighth in the ITA Northwest region. Additionally, Pervolarakis and Pierre Garcia rank eighth in dou-bles within the ITA Northwest region.• Junior Mathieu Garcia enters the 2017 season ranked 16th in the ITA Northwest region, after going 12-9 at line two in 2016.• Carlos Donat had the best individual singles record of any Portland tennis player last season, as he went 13-2 last season, all at line six.

ALL-TIME SERIES VERSUS PORTLAND:The Pilots have dominated the series between them and the Vikings, winning all nine previous matches, and all nine by 6-1 or 7-0 scores.

SCOUTING LEWIS-CLARK STATE:• The Lewis-Clark State Warriors will open their 2017 dual season against the Vikings on Sat-urday.• The Warriors went 7-8 last season, when they advanced to the second round of the NAIA National Championships. One of the Warriors’ losses last season came against Portland State, as the Vikings beat the Warriors, 7-0. The Vikings did not drop a match in singles and doubles in that match, and won five of the six singles matches in straight sets.• Junior Yonas Woldetsadik returns for the Warriors after being named a second-team NAIA All-American last season. Woldetsadik also opens the 2017 season ranked 30th in the nation in singles, as well as 16th in the nation in doubles along with partner Jeff Su.• The Warriors also return Ignacio Salom, Alexandre D’Aboville and Tony Chin, who all played in the match against the Vikings last season along with Woldetsadik. Chin had the best show-ing of any of the Warriors against the Vikings, as he took departed Viking senior Ian Risen-hoover to a match tiebreaker before losing.

ALL-TIME SERIES VERSUS LEWIS-CLARK STATE:The Vikings have won their last three matches against the Warriors, and lead the all-time se-ries between the two teams, 3-1. The Vikings have played the Warriors twice in Portland State head coach Toby Krauel’s tenure at the school, each coming in the last two seasons, and the Vikings won both by 5-2 and 7-0 scores, respectively.

UPCOMING:The Vikings stay home for two more matches next weekend, as they host Seattle and Sacra-mento State in back-to-back matches on Jan. 27 and Jan. 28. The Vikings host Seattle at 12 p.m. on the 27th, while the Vikings open Big Sky play against Sacramento State at 11:30 a.m. on the 28th. Both matches will be played at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash.

NATHAN BONIEL, REIGNING BIG SKY MVP:Junior Nathan Boniel has a tough act to follow after he completed the best individual sea-son in program history in 2016, which culminated in him being named the Vikings’ first Big

Sky MVP in program history. Boniel broke five single-season school records while going 19-1 in singles in 2016, including the records for most wins in a season (19), most Big Sky wins in a season (9) and high-est overall singles win percentage (.950). Boniel’s only loss during the 2016 spring season came in three sets in a match where he led in the third set. Boniel has been off to a good start so far in defense of his MVP honors, as he won the Bulldog Classic Single A title during the fall, and was a finalist in the Dar Walters Fall Classic Singles A flight. Additionally, Boniel competed at the prestigious Oracle ITA Masters, where he upset a Pac-12 mixed doubles team in Nick Crystal of USC and Denise Starr of Cal, along with Idaho’s Marianna Petrei. Both Crystal and Starr entered the match ranked in the top 10 nationally in men’s and women’s doubles, while Starr was the 2016 NCAA runner-up in women’s doubles.

BONIEL AND LOPEZ BATTLING AT THE TOP OF THE RECORD BOOKS:A subtext to the Vikings’ 2017 season will be the battle at the top of the record book between junior Nathan Boniel and senior Ethan Lopez. Both have a chance to break the career record for singles wins at Portland State, which currently stands at 28, shared between Chris Rice (2009-11) and Alex VanDerschelden (2008-11). Lopez currently ranks seventh all-time with 21 career singles wins, while Boniel ranks two spots behind him in ninth with 19 career wins. The two will also battle for the career record in Big Sky singles wins, as they both rank in the top 10 coming into the season. Ian Risenhoover holds the re-cord with 15 career Big Sky singles wins, while Lopez and Boniel rank third and tied for sixth with 11 and nine career conference wins, re-spectively. Boniel and Lopez also stand 1-2 in overall singles win per-centage, with Boniel way out in front with a career win percentage of .950 (19-1), while Lopez holds a career win percentage of .538 (21-18).

Both Boniel and Lopez are also chasing career records in their own categories. Boniel ranks second in career wins at No. 1 singles with 19 – nine behind Chris Rice’s record of 28. Lopez, meanwhile, ranks sec-ond in career wins at No. 2 singles with 12 – 11 behind Alex VanDer-schelden’s record of 23. Boniel and Lopez also currently hold the re-cords for win percentage at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, with Boniel holding a .950 win percentage at No. 1, while Lopez holds a .522 win percentage at No. 2.

NEWCOMERS:The Vikings added three true freshmen during the offseason in Tom-my Edwards, Sam Larson and Majeed Bukhari, while redshirt freshman Yousef Abdo joins the fold after sitting out last season. Edwards had the best fall season of any of the four freshmen, as he made the cham-pionship match of the singles B draw at the Bulldog Classic, where he also won the consolation doubles title along with teammate Nathan Boniel. Edwards also competed in the junior draw at the Oracle ITA Masters, not representing Portland State, and advanced into the sec-ond round of the prestigious tournament. Bukhari, meanwhile, made the consolation finals of the singles B draw at the Bulldog Classic, and went 5-5 overall in singles during the fall.

2016 SEASON RECAP:The Vikings completed the best season in program history last year, as the team set program records for overall wins (12), overall win per-centage (.571) and Big Sky wins (5). The Vikings also challenged for a spot in the Big Sky tournament during the season, which would have been their first time ever making the Big Sky tournament. The Vikings stood 5-2 in Big Sky matches at one point, but an untimely injury to the Vikings’ No. 2 singles player, Scott Goldner, precipitated a six-match losing streak that dropped the Vikings out of tournament contention. The Vikings still managed to set more individual records during the season, however, as departed senior Ian Risenhoover set the career record for career doubles wins at 39, while fellow departed senior Brent Wheeler finished second behind him with 38. Wheeler also set the record for most career wins by a doubles team with 22 with Ethan Lopez, and tied the record for most individual career wins at No. 1 doubles with 26. Risenhoover, meanwhile, left the program as the career leader in wins at No. 2 doubles, wins at No. 6 singles, Big Sky singles wins and Big Sky doubles wins. The big record-setter in 2016, however, was Nathan Boniel, who set five single-season records while becoming the program’s first-ever Big Sky MVP at the end of

the season. Boniel set the records for overall singles wins (19), overall singles win percentage (.950), Big Sky singles wins (9), wins at No. 1 singles (19) and win percentage at No. 1 singles (.950).
