2017 Spring Performance "Survival Guide" It's Show Time! Well, just about. It will be here before we know it. It is a very exciting time for our teachers and students. We can't wait to share with you what your talented children have been working on throughout the last several weeks. As of performance day, students would have spent roughly JUST one school day getting the show together. By now you are already well aware, that in Drama Kids, our focus isn't on production or performance, but rather on developing life-skills such as focus, confidence, public speaking, and teamwork, just to name a few. Of course, much of our focus is also on building a positive rapport with our students, getting to know them as individuals, and having FUN with them, so they are willing to take risks, which leads to more confidence. We like to say, "WE BUILD CONFIDENCE: NOT SHOWS!" Parents, we do ask that you have an "extra supply of patience" during our attempt to run 36 group dress rehearsals and 36 group performances within the limited hours we have been lucky enough to "squeeze" out of the Summerlin Performing Arts Center. Although we will do EVERYTHING in our power to make sure things run smoothly and run on time. Dramatic surprises can happen and are often out of our control! 9 years into it, this still remains a learning experience for us as well. As you hear me say time and time again, Drama Kids of Las Vegas will only get better, as we live and learn from our mistakes and the helpful feedback we receive from our amazing parents. That being said, parents, please bear in mind that this is not an exact science, and that we do try to make everyone as happy as we possibly can. My team constantly reminds me, "Drama Mama, you can't possibly make everyone happy, no matter how hard you try," but….it certainly doesn't stop me from trying. After all, your child has worked SO very hard over the course of the year, and they look forward to this event. I want nothing but the best experience for them! So, PLEASE read the following guide to our Spring Performances...it (hopefully!) contains everything you'll need to know about our end-of-the-year performance. These next few weeks are our busiest time of year. We hope to have answered any or all questions you may have regarding the rehearsal and performance process in this "survival guide." Please, we encourage you to read this thoroughly, as it may have the answers you are looking for and may save you a phone call and us a ton of time answering unnecessary phone calls. Thank you, parents, for your assistance in making this rehearsal and performance process a wonderful experience for your child. Dramatically yours, Drama Mama & Drama Kids of Las Vegas Staff

2017 Spring Performance "Survival Guide"

It's Show Time! We like to say, "WE BUILD CONFIDENCE: NOT SHOWS!"

Parents, we do ask that you have an "extra supply of patience" during our attempt to run 36 group dress rehearsals and 36 group performances within the limited hours we have been lucky enough to "squeeze" out of the Summerlin Performing Arts Center.

SUMMERLN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER LOCATION INFORMATION All dress rehearsals and final performaces will be held at the Summerlin Performing Arts Center. This is located within the Summerlin Library at 1771 Inner Circle Dr., LV, NV 89134, near Summerlin Parkway and Town Center Dr.

COSTUMES See attached costuming information.

MANDATORY DRESS REHEARSAL

Students must report 15 minutes PRIOR to their scheduled rehearsal time for their ONE and ONLY dress rehearsal upon the stage. Teachers and students have a VERY limited amount of time to run through the play to ensure proper positioning (blocking), use of props, familiarity with stage space, etc. *Unfortunately, the doors to the theater will remain locked and no family members will be allowed to attend the dress rehearsals. Feel free to drop off your child and run a few errands or perhaps visit the library and catch up on some reading!

All students must come to dress rehearsal in requested attire, ready for photos, & ready to perform this year. This year we are feeling DRAMATICALLY brave and changed it up some. We will be having back to back dress rehearsals and performances verses running it like all the previous years where we did one night dress rehearsal and the following night was the performance. This change involves good news and bad news.

THE GOOD NEWS IS: it’s only ONE trip to the theater for students and parents. Only one time getting ready. Half as many costume changes for us. Half as many check ins. Reheasral info is fresh in students’ minds. Etc.

THE BAD NEWS IS: if your child misses dress rehearsal this year, we can’t call you and remind you to come to the show tomorrow night...your child WILL MISS THEIR PERFORMANCE.

REHEARSAL/PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE Please see attached.

STUDENT DROP OFF Please park in the main parking lot and walk your child to the "loading" area behind the theater facility for both, the dress rehearsal AND the actual performance. If facing the main entrance of the library, the loading area will be off to the right side around the corner of the building. We will have assigned personnel checking students in.

PLEASE NOTE: 1) Students must be dressed in requested attire (please see attached costume information)2) If you would like special hair/make up done on your child this should also be done PRIOR to arriving to the theater. Drama Kids does not do hair or make up, unless its specific costume make-up we require.3) No adults will be allowed to enter the backstage area for any reason.4) No adults or will be allowed in the theater during rehearsals.

STUDENT DISMISSAL AFTER PERFORMANCE Pick up will be a DIFFERENT location than the check in table. There will be 2 different "pick up & drop off" spots in order to prevent congestion at the check in/check out table. Upon check in you will be informed of pick up location and aftre the performance Drama Mama will guide the auidence out and to the location where our little shining stars will be dismissed.

TICKETS Attached are your allotted # of tickets. Although there is no admission charge, a limited # of tickets has been distributed to each student. The seats have been evenly distributed amongst the students at each school for their particular performance. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE-If you know you will NOT be using all of your tickets, please give any "unwanted" tickets back to your child's Drama Kids teacher ASAP, we can disperse any "extra" tickets for families that request them. If you need extra tickets you must do so in writing via email at [email protected]. Extra

Page 3: 2017 Spring Performance Survival Guide - Drama Kidsdramakids.com/las-vegas-henderson-nv/wp-content/uploads/...2017 Spring Performance "Survival Guide" It's Show Time! Well, just about

tickets can NOT be guaranteed and any "unused" tickets will be dispersed on a first come first serve basis. Please note: seating will not be assigned, but will be on a first come first serve basis.

SEATING We WILL NOT open the doors for seating much earlier than the scheduled performance time. We have scheduled back-to back dress rehearsals & performances (literally up to the minute of show start times). The beauty of Summerlin Performing Arts Center is that visibility is GREAT! So please don't worry about "bad" seats! So, once you drop your child off for the hour rehearsal you might as well plan on garbbing a Starbucks, reading a book in the library, running a quick errand, etc. as we will NOT open the doors for seating until scheduled performace time, because we want to be sure to give our students every moment of rehearsal time so they are confident and ready to put on a stellar show for you!!! So no need to wait for an hour in line, or even 30 minutes, or even 15 minutes. Lining up 5 minutes befroe scheduled show time, is more like it.

LIBRARY ETIQUETTE: For Parents & Guests Coming to See the Show SHOW TIME: we know it's exciting. However, we need to send out a gentle reminder regarding noise level in the waiting area of the theater lobby. Please remember we are actually in a library and we need to to demonstrate appropriate library behavior as we're waiting for the door to open. We would appreciate if you can help us out and remind each other to whisper and remain in an orderly line. Trust us, we know there is a lot of excitement during this time. We would love for you and your guests to channel that excitement and energy and save it for our little shining stars, as you are hootin', hollering, clapping, whistling, and cheering them on during the performances.

We are very fortunate to be able to rent the beautiful Summerlin Perfoming Arts Center and call it our home each year in May and give students an opportunity they may otherwise never experience. We have been given a warning by the theater to correct this issue, and if not, they will have no other option but move the line to the outside in the dreaded heat, or worse yet, they will not renew our contract, so on behalf of all our Drama Kids we are begging you to please keep this in mind:)

Thanks so much for your support and understanding!

LENGTH OF PERFORMANCE The entire performance will last about 1 hour for most schools (if there are two classes performing). The reason we combine both classes at each school into ONE Spring Performances is so that students can LEARN from watching the other performances, and so that our students have the opportunity to gain confidence and stage experience in front of a LARGE audience. In addition, this gives parents and students a chance to see how the curriculum and expectations advance in our program. Please plan to stay for the ENTIRE performance. We teach our students good audience etiquette, and leaving in the middle of a performance is simply not good etiquette. Imagine if it were YOUR child up there, ready to perform and half of the audience leaves.

AWARDS As you know much of what we do is praise our students each week in class! As you probably recall, we do want to recognize our students and their efforts and dedication to our program. Each year, at the end of the year, we hand out ribbons for our newest "half-year" students, medals for 1st full year students, and increasingly larger trophies each year thereafter for our more experienced veterans! MOST awards will be handed out furing the last scheduled class at the schools. Your child's Drama Kids teacher will be handing out awards at the end of the last class held at the school. Please refer to the exact schedule that was sent home in the parent contract a few weeks ago and WATCH FOR EMAIL information.

MY CHILD CANNOT MAKE PERFORMANCE Let's hope this will not be the case, as our little stars are looking forward to this exciting event. However, we do realize there may be schedule conflicts. Hopefully, by now you have notified your Drama Kids teacher, so other arrangements can be made and your child's part can be re-assigned. If not, please do so IMMEDIATELY.

VIDEOS/VIDEOING (OPTIONAL) Due to strict copyright and student privacy/confidentiality, NO private VIDEOING will be allowed. Library security will be strictly enforcing this rule so PLEASE order your DVDs ahead of time.

We had positive feedback on last year’s DVD quality and service. Therefore, we will once again offer ther same IN HOUSE DVD service this year. This means no more outside videographer “issues.” Drama Mama and a super technically savy DK team member will be directly involved with the videoing, editing, and delivery of the DVDs. We all know how particular Drama Mama can be. This means each DVD will have her seal of approval. J

Online orders only! Please order online at www.breakalegdvds.com.

*PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY (OPTIONAL)We are excited to welcome back Portraits to You. They are a local, family owned portrait studio and have been in business for over 10 years. In addition to taking family and senior portraits, they are also photographer to several schools in the area. They pride themselves in taking outstanding portraits and work very hard to bring out the best in each child. They digitally edit each image to remove blemishes, whiten teeth and brighten eyes! We are sure you will be happy with their excellent customer service and beautiful images. Please visit their website www.portraitstoyou.net for samples of their work or call Debra at 702-499-9930 with any questions. Since Portraits to You will be taking individual "character" photos during the DRESS REHEARSAL, it is imperative your child attends the dress rehearsal AND comes dressed and ready to go! Drama Kids will of course provide costume accessories and/or props as needed. Photo packages offered this year are very similar to most popular school photo packages, plus are just as affordable.

*Please use the attached order form and submit it with payment to your Drama Kids teacher.

2017 Performance Costume Suggestions

Drama Kids encourages the students to bring their character alive with their own personal touch. Please do not go to any great expense for this costume. We understand the many expenses families have these day. Now is the time to start raiding your closets. All Drama Kids costumes should cost little to no money to put together. We mainly require students wear specific, but basic, clothing items they more than likely already have in their closets. If you prefer to purchase your child’s OWN costume, you may do so, but it is NOT requiredJ We’re about the kids. Our ultimate mission is to build confidence! Remember, we build CONFIDENCE, NOT SHOWS! If you need any further advice or help, please don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher or email us at [email protected]. If you can provide the basic clothing, we will provide any ‘signature pieces’, accessories, and whatever else we can for each child's costume. PARADESIA

Keep in mind we are very flexible, and are basically asking students to come dressed for the “island/ tropical theme”. It is ultimately your decision what your child is most comfortable with wearing on stage. Some suggestions include:

Girls: tropical island attire, bathing suits, sarongs, colorful tank tops, shorts, tropical skirts or grass skirts, sandals/flip-flops.

Boys: board shorts, bright swim trunks, sandals/flip-flops.

Accessories The following accessories are optional, not required: beach towel, beach bags, islander hats, grass skirts, leis, etc. We will have some of these items on hand to accessorize students as neededJ

BOLD BUCCANEERS

Pirate Costume: Cut offs-jeans or black pants, striped shirts, striped socks, white blousy tops, vests, sashes or ties. Think browns, reds, blacks, & whitesJ The following accessories are optional, not required: pirate hat, beads, jewels, bandanas. We will have some of these items on hand to accessorize students as neededJ

Sailors Costume: White t-shirt, blue jeans, tennis shoes (black if possible).

Parrot Costume: Please wear a light weight tank top & pair of shorts for underneath the parrot costume we will provide. Black tennis shoes would be perfect, if possible.

*All students MUST arrive to the theater dressed and ready to go (girls this includes hair and optional make-up, etc). Professional individual & cast photos will be taken.

Please feel free to TEXT us at 870-4354 or email us at [email protected] regarding the upcoming Spring Performances and any additional questions you may have.
