2017 Spring Tractor

Show & Flea Market

Feature Tractor:

According to Wikipedia, Minneapolis Moline is a company started by an alien race from the planet Molania in the year 1638… oops, I guess that’s why my college professors wouldn’t let me use Wikipedia as a reference. For real though, Minneapolis Moline was a merger of three different agricultural companies in 1929: Moline Plow Co. Inc., Minneapolis Threshing Machine Co., and Minneapolis Steel & Machinery Co. We all know what happened after 1929; The Great Depression. It is speculated that if the three companies would not have combined, the Great Depression may have been the end of all three. As it was, the Minneapolis Moline Co. was the saving grace for a large part of the Midwest, providing thousands of jobs to the region. Between 1941-1945 Minneapolis Moline continues to produce farm implements, but also participates in manufacturing shells, warheads and army vehicles for the war effort. Area farmers were asked to make do with the equipment they had as to keep up with military orders. Minneapolis Moline had its ups and downs during the late 40’s and 50’s

until it was purchased by White Motor Co. in 1963. Ten years of steady decline concluded with the end of the tractor company. In 1972, White Motor Co. cut pensions for former Minneapolis Moline retirees and demolished the landmark plant on Lake St. In 1975, the Minnehaha Mall was built in its place and stands, to some, as an insult to one of the largest contributors to the survival of the Midwest during the Great Depression, WWI and WWII. Congratulations are in order for our sister, Amy, and her new husband Shane Miles. They joined in holy matrimony on May 20th. There was a beautiful ceremony at their house where they have been hard at work installing a fish pond, tearing down ye ol’ chicken coup, pouring sidewalks, and assembling a baby room… oh; did I fail to mention that they are pregnant? That’s right, little Memphis (AKA-Tennessee) is due in August and is currently practicing the electric slide on Amy’s bladder. So who is this guy that helped create our little embryonic line dancer? Here is what I know about him… Shane is a hard worker, on top of all the “Honey Do” items he has, and believe me they are plentiful, he also works full time for Piqua Concrete and helps out at the campground when we need him. He is also a member of the Fletcher Volunteer Fire Department as well as a father of three, soon to be four beautiful children. This past Christmas we all went down to Florida, it was Shane’s first time. We went shrimping with Dad, fixed the dock, raced go carts, and did some fishing off the pier. He even helped me with the net on my Sheepshead conquest.

Shane is a great guy and has our backs; which is why most of you already know who I’m talking about. Now Shane is married to Amy. Even though he was offered a chance to make his escape. Right before the ceremony, Steve approached Shane and said,” Go to my house and get my screwdriver.” After a very brief pause, Shane said “It’s okay, I have a screwdriver.” Right after that, BOOM! He’s married. Congratulations Amy and Shane. You two are a great fit for each other and I know that Memphis will grow up in a house full of love and will have at least one cool uncle. With so many great things happening, I don’t want you to forget the little things in life... you know, like the flea market.

Life Before Cell Phones

I can remember the first time I spoke on a cell phone. It

looked exactly like the one above. I was 16, working at

McDonalds, and a customer let me call my mom from his

phone. I had no clue it would be such a memorable

experience.

Kids these days will never understand life before cell phones

or the added cost that comes with them. A phone line for the

house used to run $25-$50 plus your long distance. Now, to

have your entire family hooked up with a cell phone, you are

required to pay for the phone plus the data package,

insurance, apps and a dozen other charges that Verizon

pulls out of thin air. By the time you’re done, the monthly bill

adds up to over a hundred dollars. That sure makes those $2

long distance charges seem miniscule.

Remember when the entire family had one phone?

Remember when that phone rang how every kid in the house

raced to pick it up like it was the starting bell for the Kentucky

Derby? That’s more than likely the reason for childhood

obesity today. We should make these kids finish a fifty meter

sprint and wrestle their siblings before they can answer their

call or text.

How about this one… Remember when you would finally call

your crush after hours of deliberation, peer pressure and

rehearsal; just for her dad to answer the phone, causing you

to immediately hang up out of spine tingling fear. You

thought you were off the hook until he *69’d you.

Collect calls are a thing of the past, especially since pay

phones became extinct. When you needed picked up after

practice there was a trick to avoid using quarters. The

operator would ask your parents if they would accept

charges from “Mikeatschoolcomepickmeup.”

Much has changed since we started putting those little

devices in our pockets. We no longer need to remember

phone numbers, look at paper maps, or call a friend because

we can’t think of the name of that guy that played in that

movie… thanks Google. We all have that mini personal

assistant which contains a world of knowledge, just make

sure the information overload doesn’t blind you from the

treasures of life that are right in front of you, like kids,

spouses and the road.

Church in the big red barn

Hero for a Day

Once a month, Poor Farmer’s is proud to host “Church in the Big Red Barn” with Kathy Love. Kathy is a remarkable woman. She is a wonderful mother, a loving wife, a giving grandmother and a constant friend. Kathy is one of the most devout Christians I have ever known. Her relationship with God has been tested and proven time and time again, with un-diagnosable health issues within her family, to surviving cancer. Kathy inspires all of us in ways that only her energy can. Please come see for yourself how your own relationship with God can be strengthened.

Future Dates:

June 18th, July 2nd, August 6th,

September 3rd, and to finish off the

season in style October 29th.

This beautiful young lady should be an Avenger. Fighting side by side with Captain America saving the lives of those in need. Zoey White saw a fire outside of her parents fifth wheel and took action. She woke her parents and brother making sure they were all able to get out of the coach safely. Tune in next month as Charlie’s Chat will feature the White family.

We had a grand ol’ time on Memorial Day Weekend. There were golf carts racing, Red White & Blue flying and meat on the grill furnishing the atmosphere with all the aromatic scents of Summer. Roy and Melissa Steele brought their Karaoke gear and the young lady in the red shirt pictured to the left really needs to try out for American Idol. Even though I had multiple complaints about the people on the Moto-Bar having too much fun, I thought it was a really neat concoction designed and built by one of our over-nighters. To the left you can see some very patriotic perms, Sam & Samantha Minton and Gwenn Baker. Finally, I have added some pictures of a couple new additions to the parts store. We have a very nice ice cream freezer which was purchased due to popular demand and a special thanks to Tim Fields for building our new candy station. The store looks great! Next on the agenda, a coffee maker.

I wanted to make sure to get a picture of Jaiden on his John Deere Bike. He led the golf cart parade on Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend and rode in the Fletcher Parade on Memorial Day. I will say, he was plenty wore out after both parades. Barb and Larry had fun decorating their cart and themselves for the two parades. Thank you to everyone who came out to represent Poor Farmer’s RV at the Fletcher parade. I promise we will not get there so early next year. Below are some more pics of the Golf Cart Challenge. We have Jacque with her polka dot helmet and Jeremiah with his thumbs up. Rick and I would like to thank the whole crew for helping make this year’s Spring Challenge such a success. Congrats are in order for all of those who won an event in the Challenge; especially Jerry Bottorff for receiving 1st place in the Show -N-Shine and Steve Springer for being King of the Campground with his superfast gas outlaw cart!
