Tulsa Travels to Memphis for Two Neutral-Site Games Tulsa will travel to Memphis, Tenn., to face Ole Miss and Rice in the Mem- phis Invitational. The Golden Hurricane will take on Ole Miss on Friday, Sep- tember 8 at 5:00 pm, and Rice on Sunday, September 10 at 2:00 pm, with both matches played at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Scouting the Opponents Ole Miss has a 5-0-1 mark this season, including an 8-0 win over Southern Miss in their last contest. Tulsa Travels to Memphis for Two Neutral-Site Games Tulsa will travel to Memphis, Tenn., to face Ole Miss and Rice in the Mem-phis Invitational. The Golden Hurricane will take on Ole Miss on Friday, Sep-tember 8 at 5:00 pm, and Rice on Sunday, September 10 at 2:00 pm, with both matches played at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.

Scouting the Opponents Ole Miss has a 5-0-1 mark this season, including an 8-0 win over Southern Miss in their last contest. Tulsa Picked Seventh in The American Preseason Coaches’ Poll The Golden Hurricane was picked to finish seventh in the American Athletic Con-ference, as voted on by the league’s head coaches. TU, which finished the 2016 season with an 8-10-1 mark, returns 18 letterwin-ners, including seven starters from last season’s team.

Six NCAA Tournament Teams Highlight 2017 Schedule Six NCAA tournament teams from the 2016 season highlight the 2017 Tulsa women’s soccer schedule. The Golden Hurricane schedule features 12 teams that posted double-digit wins and four teams that were ranked or receiving votes in the final NSCAA top-25 poll a year ago. The six NCAA tournament participants on the schedule include Kansas, Mem-phis, Nebraska, Oklahoma, SMU and UConn, while UConn concluded the year ranked No. 20 in the NSCAA poll, and Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma all received votes.

Regular Season Champion to Host The American Tournament The American Athletic Conference women’s soccer regular season champion will host The American Tournament. The quarterfinals will be played on Nov. 1, followed by the semifinals on Nov. 3 and the championship match on Nov. 5.

2016 in Review The Tulsa women’s soccer team finished the season with eight wins, the fewest since having just eight wins in 2010. TU tallied 34 goals and 30 assists for 98 points, while their opponents had 38 goals and 28 assists for 104 points.

Kyle Cussen is in his 10th year at the helm of the Tulsa women’s soccer program. He was named the sixth head coach in school history on January 21, 2008. In 19 years as a collegiate head coach, Cussen has compiled a 198-146-37 record, including an 88-72-22 mark in nine years with the Golden Hurricane.

Under Cussen, the Hurricane has five seasons with 10-plus wins, including tying the second-best mark of 13 wins in 2015. Sixteen student-athletes have earned all-conference honors, three were tabbed to the conference all-tournament team, Rachel

Thun was selected as The American Rookie of the Year (2014) and Midfielder of the Year (2016), Jordan O’Brien was tabbed as the Conference USA Freshman of the Year (2010), 11 players received all-Rookie/Freshman accolades and five picked up NSCAA All-Region honors during Cussen’s tenure. TU student-athletes have also excelled in the classroom under Cussen’s direction, as the team earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award in 2012 and 2013, 11 players received CoSIDA All-District honors while two went on to be named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team, and 184 student-athletes have earned confer-ence academic accolades.

Cussen was the head women’s coach at Oral Roberts University from 1998-2007. He posted an overall record of 110-74-15 in his 10 seasons, while compiling an eight-year conference mark of 35-15-8. During his ORU tenure, Cussen’s teams won three regular season Mid-Continent Conference titles (2000, 2002 and 2004) and two Mid-Con Tournament crowns (1999, 2004), while appearing in the Mid-Con Tourna-ment Championship game for six straight seasons (1999-2004). Cussen also led ORU to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in the program’s 12-year history in 2004.

An Oklahoma native, Cussen played collegiately at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Okla. He graduated from SNU in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Cussen then served as an assistant women’s soccer coach for the SNU Redskins, helping to build a program in its early stages. While there, Cussen helped the team post an overall 51-9-1 record and qualify for the NAIA Regional all three years, including an NAIA Final Four berth in 1995.

Cussen spent time playing professionally for the Oklahoma City Slickers and the Tulsa Roughnecks. In 1999, he earned a master’s degree in education at ORU.

He and his wife, Misti, who is the head women’s basketball coach at Oral Roberts University, have two daughters: Cassie Grace and Caia Faith.
