Thisisanintroductiontovisualartthroughavarietyofmaterials,includingpencil,coloredpencil,marker,charcoal,watercolor,paint,andcollage.Studentsexplorearthistory,professionsinthearts,andparticipateincritiques.

Herestudentsexploremorecomplexvisualartsproblemsusingavarietyofartmaterials.Newtechniquesandmaterials,suchasprintmaking,areintroduced.Eachstudentcreatesaportfoliooftheirwork,andtheyparticipateinartshowsandcompetitions.

Inthishands-onstudiocourse,studentsareintroducedtoworkingwith3-dimensionalmaterials,includingclay,wire,papier-mâché,metalembossing,foundobjects,andinstallationart.Studentsalsolearnaboutarthistory,artprofessionsandparticipateincritiques.

Using3-Dmaterials,studentsstretchtheircreativeabilitiesandimprovetheirtechnicalskills.Newskillsincludingcarvingandcastingareintroduced.Studentswillcreateaworkofpublicartforthecampusorcommunity.Portfolios,shows,andcompetitionsarealsoapartofthiscourse.

Thisisathird-yearoptionforstudentswhohavecompletedAdvancedArtorAdvanced3-DArt.APStudioArthasthreeportfoliosoptions:Drawing,3-DDesign,or2-DDesign.Foreachportfolio,studentsexploreabroadvarietyofmediaandtechniquesinthebreadthsection,andthenchoosefocusedthemetocreateaseriesofworkfortheirconcentration.StudentswhopasstheportfolioreviewbytheCollegeBoardwillearncollegecredits.

Thiscourseintroducesthedesignprocesstostudentsthroughcompletionofprojectsintheareasofarchitectureandproductmanufacturing.Throughinstructionintheareasofsketching,drafting,computergraphics,prototyping,andtheprinciplesandelementsofdesign,thestudentlearnstodevelopandunderstandnotonlythescientifictheoryandfactswithintheengineering,manufacturingandarchitecturalfields,butalsotheaestheticandartisticviewsofadesigner.

StudentsarerequiredtotakeafullyearofavisualorperformingarttobeeligibleforUCandCSUacceptance.AllJohnF.KennedyHighSchoolVisualandPerformingArts(VAPA)coursessatisfythisA-Grequirementforall4-yearcollegesanduniversities.TakingasecondyearormoreofVAPAelectiveswillearnstudentsadditionalelectivecreditstowardsgraduation.

Piano Thiscourseteachesthefundamentalsneededtoperformonthepiano.Studentswilllearnchordsandkeys,accompanimentpatterns,andimprovisationaltechniques.Studentswillplaymelodiesandparticipateinensembleplaying.Wewilldiscoverthecomposersandhistorybehindthemusic.

Choir Thisisayear-longcoursethatexploreschoralmusicfromawidevarietyofculturesandtimeperiodsthroughstudyandperformance.Thecorecurriculumemphasizesthebasicsofvocaltechnique,sight-reading,musictheory,andmusichistory.Studentsareexpectedtoparticipateinperformances,includingoneeveningconcerteachquarter.

Marching MarchingBand/ConcertBandisoneyear-longelective.InMarchingBandthemusiciansandcolorguardpracticeandperformamarchingbandfieldshowforentertainment,andcompetition.Theinstrumentationincludesbrass,woodwind,percussion,andcolorguard.*Notaclassforbeginners.

Concert Thisclassoffersbandatthebeginninglevel–noexperiencenecessary!Theinstrumentstaughtareflute,clarinet,saxophone,trumpet,tromboneandtuba.Topicsincludereading,musicnotation,analyzingandevaluatingmusic,aswellascomposingandimprovisingsimplemelodies.Thestudentspresentawinterandspringconcert.

Jazz Band Zeroperiodinstrumentalmusicclassforsaxophones,trumpets,trombones,andrhythmsection.Studentsrehearse/performbigbandandcontemporaryjazzbandarrangementsforfiveconcertsthroughouttheschoolyear,inadditiontoanysmallperformancesforcommission.*Notaclassforbeginners.

MusicianswhoparticipateintheMarchingBandparticipateintheConcertBandonsimilarinstruments.ConcertBandrehearsesclassicandcontemporarybandrepertoireandperformsinfourconcerts.Colorguardandpercussionistsrehearsewintershowproductionstocompeteinthespringmonths.*Notaclassforbeginners.
