31 submarine type. It was laid down in 1913 and launched on September 26, 1914. The plate designated the manufacturer as Atlas-Werke, a share company, in Bremen, Germany. The boats’ captains in 1917 were Walter Forstmann and Heinrich Metzger. That year, along with a number of Allied ships, the U39 sank two American merchant ships, the Petrolite (June 10) and the Schuylkill (November 21).

2017.167 – Purchase: US pilot’s French Roold Type flying helmet. The helmet is painted with the US air service wings

and the US roundel of red, blue and white circles. It has a cork shell covered with painted oil cloth and cloth lining. The ear flaps feature the classic thick round leather and brass insets ear covers (or bumpers). The ear covers protected the pilot swaying from side to side in the plane’s cockpit.
