2017–2018 BOOKSNEW AND BEST SELLERS

Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) is the unified capability of a System of Systems (SoS) to assess the current or future state of the member system health, and integrate it within a framework of available resources and operational demand.

As system complexities have increased, so have system support costs, driven by more frequent and often enigmatic subsystem failures.

IVHM strategies can be used to mitigate these issues by taking a System of Systems view. Combined with advanced decision-support methods, this approach can be used to more effectively predict, isolate, schedule, and repair failed subsystems, reducing platform support costs, and minimizing platform downtime.

This requires that the IVHM system must also provide actionable decision support to operators and maintainers, informing platform operational capabilities and maintenance procedures.

Integrated Vehicle Health Management – System of Systems Integration brings together ten seminal SAE technical papers addressing the challenges and solutions to maintaining highly complex vehicles.

The objective is to prevent a given component from degrading to the point of failure or predictable impending failure. Specifications should also reflect a common means for communicating this information to other health-ready IVHM system components. This goal needs to be accomplished in a way that respects and protects suppliers’ intellectual property regarding system design and implementation.

Integrated Vehicle Health Management – System of Systems Integration is a must-read for those getting involved with this new and sophisticated field, and for those who want to advance it through research and hands-on experience.

About the Editor Timothy Wilmering is a retired Technical Fellow at the Boeing Company who currently provides engineering consulting services in the integration of complex systems and systems health management. He has over 30 years of experience ranging from the hands-on troubleshooting and repair of complex engineering systems and platforms

to the development and deployment of advanced systems health management solutions in a multitude of military and commercial environments.

His professional interests are centered on Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) architectures, software tools and information system modeling and integration, and the application of knowledge-based methodologies to these technologies. His research and development accomplishments include the application of advanced computing technologies to test, diagnosis, and maintenance procedures both on and off aircraft, diagnostic architecture development and design guidance, development of sophisticated analytical engineering frameworks, and the integration of advanced reasoning approaches with aircraft data collection and decision support infrastructure.

He is a founding member of the Prognostics and Health Management Society Board of Directors, senior member of the IEEE, and co-chair of the Diagnostic and Maintenance Control Subcommittee of IEEE Standards Coordinating Committee 20 on Test and Diagnosis for Electronic Systems. T. Wilmering is also a working group chair on the SAE Integrated Vehicle Health Management HM-1 Committee, responsible for the creation and publication of numerous vehicle health management standards and best practices. He has authored numerous papers and two book chapters related to IVHM.

Ceramic Matrix Composites

The fifth volume of this six-volume compendium publishes technical guidance and properties on ceramic matrix composite material systems. The selected guidance on technical topics related to this class of composites includes material selection,

processing, characterization, testing, data reduction, design, analysis, quality control, application, case histories, and lessons learned of typical ceramic matrix composite materials.

Volume 5, which covers ceramic matrix composites, supersedes MIL-HDBK-17-5 of June 17, 2002.

The Composite Materials Handbook, referred to by industry groups as CMH-17, is an engineering reference tool that contains over 1,000 records of the latest test data for polymer matrix, metal matrix, ceramic matrix, and structural sandwich composites. CMH-17 provides information and guidance necessary to design and fabricate end items from composite materials. It includes properties of composite materials that meet specific data requirements as well as guidelines for design, analysis, material selection, manufacturing, quality control, and repair.

The primary purpose of the handbook is to standardize engineering methodologies related to testing, data reduction, and reporting of property data for current and emerging composite materials. It is used by engineers worldwide in designing and fabricating products made from composite materials.

Managing Aerospace Projects

Managing Aerospace ProjectsDr. Jimmy Williams, Jr.

Over the next twenty years, the role and contributions of successfully managed projects will continue to grow in importance to aerospace organizations, especially considering the demands of emerging markets.

The accompanying challenges will be how to effectively reduce product and process cost where known (incremental) and unknown (transformational) technological innovation are required.

Managing Aerospace Projects brings together ten seminal SAE technical papers that support the vision of a more holistic and integrated approach to highly complex projects.

Using the concept of project management levers, Dr. Jimmy Williams, Jr., the editor of this title, expands on the critical importance of correctly deciding on:

• Organizational strategies• Technology and product strategy• Global portfolio strategy• Project portfolio strategy

Sub-optimized strategies result in and contribute to a portfolio of misdirected projects and organizational dissatisfaction with project management outcomes unrelated to the actual project management process.

As an example, ensuring the convergence and readiness of technologies that are critical for the design, development, and assembly of aircraft, requires a disciplined and flexible approach for product and technology development.

Operating in an environment in which customer needs and supplier capabilities are dynamic requires continual focus on a portfolio of projects, initiatives, and capabilities that result in sustaining competitive advantage and influence.

Managing Aerospace Projects stresses the positive impact of project classification and the specific handling and leadership knowledge requirements, so these endeavors are indeed successful. Some comparisons and lessons from the automotive industry are offered.

The notion that project management competence and capabilities are embedded in distinct ways of coordinating and combining multiple competencies, suggests that failing to recognize the required organizational adaptations could be a major contributor to sub-optimized project management outcomes.

Dr. Jimmy Williams, Jr.Dr. Jimmy Williams Jr. serves as Executive Director and Distinguished Service Professor of the Engineering and Technology Innovation Management (ETIM) Program at Carnegie Mellon University.

Dr. Williams comes to his current position with significant and practical experience in industry, employing both business and

technical acumen as a proven business development strategist, operational leader, and technology and innovation manager.

From 2012, he held the position of Vice President of Global Engineering at Pall Corp where he led a 750-member engineering unit, driving Pall’s global growth initiatives across its Life Science and Industrial Products business.

Prior to Pall, Dr. Williams spent 10 years with Alcoa, Inc. In his role as Senior Director of Research and Development – Alcoa Technology Advantage, he led all facets of business and technology management, including innovation management, portfolio management, market analysis, product development, project management, engineering design, and production operations. As a product innovator, Dr. Williams spearheaded a critical assessment of Alcoa’s $2.1 billion aero-structures business, leading to a cost-saving fundamental shift in materials options.

Beginning in 1983, Dr. Williams led a nearly 20-year distinguished career at The Boeing Company, where he held a number of significant research and development and program management positions. Among his accomplishments at Boeing, Dr. Williams restructured the company’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology Organization, increased manufacturing flexibility and productivity for next-generation wing drilling, and earned Boeing’s Black Engineer of the Year Award in 2001.

Dr. Williams holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University, an MBA in marketing and management from Lindenwood College, and a doctorate in Engineering and Policy from Washington University. A native of St. Louis, he and his wife, Valerie, reside in Pittsburgh and have two children, Danielle and Justin.
