Our Class of 2017 – success storiesOur class of 2017 achieved exceptional results with a 100% pass rate at A Level and 100% pass rate across many vocational areas.

Georgia Leigh-HewittGeorgia Leigh-Hewitt, former Bishop Hedley Catholic High School student, achieved A*s in Chemistry, and Biology, an A in Physics and an A in Maths. Georgia has successfully gained a place to study Medicine at Imperial College, London. Savannah Riviera, also an ex Bishop Hedley Catholic High School, achieved A grades in Maths and Chemistry and a B in Biology. Savannah has now progressed on to study Biomedical Science at Kings College London.

Emily LewisEmily Lewis, former Afon Taf High School pupil, achieved an A in Psychology, B in Maths and a B in Business. She’s now progressed on to study Accountancy at Cardiff University.

Ryan PeekeStudent Ryan Peeke achieved a double distinction, providing him with the grades he needed to progress on to a Mechanical Engineering degree at Swansea University. Ryan’s sister Emily, also a student at the college, achieved a B in Business and a C in Drama and Theatre Studies. Emily has now progressed on to study Drama and Acting at the University of West of England. The success of this brother and sister, who both previously studied at Afon Taf High School, showcases both the A Level and vocational progression pathways that the college offers on to university.

Shauna EvansLevel 3 Hairdressing learners celebrated a fantastic set of results. Student Shauna Evans, a former Afon Taf High School pupil, not only passed her course with flying colours but she has also had a great year at college, participating enthusiastically in all of the hair and beauty enrichment activities, including being awarded 1st place in the college’s annual Avant Garde.

Daniel DaviesSports student Daniel Davies achieved a D*D*D* in his BTEC Level 3 diploma. The former Penydre High School pupil has now progressed on to study Sports Analysis at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Admissions Team Your journey at the college, begins with the Admissions process. We have a dedicated Admissions and Enquiries team who will support you through your application and enrolment process. We will provide you with advice, support and guidance to help you choose the right course for you and be your first point of contact for any queries you have related to completing your application form or attending your interview. Once you have been made an offer, we will help ensure that you have all of the information you require on transport and funding to help with the cost of your studies. As well as dealing with general enquiries, we will also signpost you to other support services, including the Learner Welfare and Pastoral support team.

Learner Welfare Our Learner Welfare team provides confidential support, advice and guidance through a range of services including Counselling, Nurse Practitioners, Careers Wales guidance and Chaplaincy services. You may self-refer directly to any of our support services or by dropping into speak to the Learner Welfare team.

Additional Learning Need Support

Our dedicated team of Learning Coaches offers expert help and support for learners who may lack confidence, are anxious, have an additional learning need or disability, who are care experienced, looked after or who are young carers. The Learning Coach team will speak to you about individualised support. The team is available to attend school transition reviews as part of the admissions process for college. Learning support is available through the medium of English, Welsh, Polish or Portuguese.

Study SupportOur specialised study skills support team provides support for a range of study-related issues. For example, assignments, course work or exams. The team includes different subject specialists who are experienced in teaching at a range of levels. To meet individual needs, support may be provided on a one-to-one basis, within small groups or through workshops.

Inspire to Achieve I2A The college is working with partners across the region to provide additional specialist support to learners via the European funded project, Inspire to Achieve. The project is co-ordinated and managed from the Learning Zone and eight dedicated lead workers provide individual, tailored support to learners.

Financial Support Our Finance team are here to help you with support, help and guidance on all aspects of funding and travel to college. Here’s an overview of some of the support you may be entitled to:

Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA)

If you are aged 16-18 you may be eligible to receive an Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA). This is an income-assessed weekly allowance of £30 to help students with the cost of further education. It is paid every two weeks directly into the student’s bank account.

It provides young people, who wish to continue in education after school leaving age, with an incentive to earn awards through good attendance and achieving agreed objectives.

Receipt of EMA will not affect any benefits which are currently paid to your household.

Applications for EMA are available from our Cash Office. Further details on this funding will be provide to you as soon as you submit apply to study at the college.

Travel PolicyAll students aged 16, 17 or 18 years on September 1st, who are attending a first course of full time study at the college, live in the Merthyr Tydfil County Borough and reside three miles or more from the college, will be eligible for free transport.

Thearrangementsfortransportwillbeasfollows:

❚ If you live north of Merthyr Tydfil e.g. Pontsticill you can apply for a free Stagecoach bus pass.

❚ If you live south of Merthyr Tydfil e.g. Troedyrhiw down to Treharris you can apply for a free Arriva Train pass.

❚ If you live in Bedlinog, Trelewis, Treharris or Quakers Yard you can apply for a place on a free bus supplied by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. This bus will leave Bedlinog at 7.50am and return from the college at 4.00pm each day.

❚ For those students attending the college who reside outside of the County Borough you will need to contact your home local authority to determine the transport arrangements that apply from that area.

Costs of studying with us All further education learners are required to pay a £20 administration fee when they enrol.

What will the £20 administration fee cover?

Students will receive a number of benefits in return for the registration fee.

Academic Excellence ScholarshipsThe college offers Academic Excellence Scholarships to students who achieve 7 or more grade A’s or above in their GCSEs. To qualify for the scholarship you must be studying at one of the Merthyr Tydfil Secondary Schools or reside in Merthyr Tydfil and studying at Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun.

The scholarships are £1,000 paid termly over the two years of your college course.

Over the last seven years between two-eight of our students have gained a place on the programme in each academic year.

Claudia Meyrick, a student on our BTEC Sports Coaching course, was successfully selected to spend over 8 weeks coaching at soccer camps for ages 4-14 year olds in Kansas during the Summer of 2017.

students a chance to develop a range of skills with plenty of individual support. No formal qualifications are needed to get on to this level of courses.

QUALIFICATIONS ON OFFERLiteracy and Numeracy skills

Looking to improve your literacy and numeracy skills?

The college offers the following courses and classes on a part-time basis.

❚ Literacy Skills. ❚ Numeracy Skills. ❚ Pre GCSE English and Mathematics. ❚ GCSE English and Mathematics.

AS Level & A LevelThese are recognised entry qualifications for university courses. An A Level includes AS and A2 units. In your first year you can usually choose to study up to four subjects at AS Level. At the end of your first year you take an AS Level exam and gain a recognised qualification.

You can continue for a second year and achieve the full A Level.

AllfulltimestudentsstudyingALevelprogrammesarerequiredtostudy 3ALevelsubjectsinadditiontothe WelshBaccalaureate.

BTECBTEC are recognised entry qualifications and an excellent route to university. There are vocational qualifications available in a wide range of subjects. They have been designed in collaboration with industry, so they equip you with the skills and knowledge that employers are looking for. The qualifications offer a mix of theory and practice, and usually include an element of work experience. They are available at Levels 1, 2 and 3.

BTEC or A Level? What is the difference?

Both A Levels and BTEC Level 3 qualifications are recognised entry qualifications for university courses.

Level 3 Diploma 2 A Levels

Level 3 Extended Diploma 3 A Levels

CACHECACHE is the UK’s only specialist awarding organisation for the children. The college offers a portfolio of qualifications ranging from CACHE Level 1 to Level 3. The Level 3 diploma is a recognised entry qualification and route into university.

Essential Skills In 2015, Essential Skills and Wider Key Skills changed. This was in response to the Review of Qualifications. They were revised to become one suite of Essential Skills including:

❚ Application of Number.❚ Digital Literacy.❚ Critical Thinking and Problem Solving.❚ Planning and Organisation.❚ Creativity and Innovation.❚ Personal Effectiveness.❚ Communication.Stand-alone qualifications in these skills will still be available post-16 and in Work-Based Learning and Adult Community, as appropriate. Students participating in the new WBQ will not be expected to complete skills qualifications.

NVQ (National Vocational Qualification)

NVQs are work-related qualifications normally delivered and assessed in the workplace. These can form part of an Apprenticeship. A qualified assessor will observe you and assess you on

the actual work you carry out in the workplace. They will test your knowledge and understanding as well as your performance.

‘Skills for Further Study’ and ‘Access to Higher Education’

Christopher Lewis OutstandingVocationalAchievement

Christopher, a former Cyfarthfa High School pupil, started with The College Merthyr Tydfil on 27th of July 2015 on the level 1 Traineeship programme and completed his qualification in Tyre Fitting Operations on the 9th of September 2016.

Christopher was then offered a Foundation Apprenticeship (level 2 diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & repair Competence) which he completed on the 27th of July 2017.

Christopher has just commenced working towards his level 3 apprenticeship at John Lewis Motors, Pant Industrial Estate, Merthyr.

CASE STUDY

Maghan JonesMaghan Jones , a former Rhymney Comprehensive School pupil, started with The College Merthyr Tydfil on the Engagement (pre vocational) programme in order to obtain work experience in Childcare. Maghan was found a placement at Abertysswg Primary School, and settled in well.

Maghan then progressed onto the Traineeship (level 1) programme and completed her NVQ 1 qualification in July 2017. Maghan also completed her Essential Skills Wales Qualification in Digital Literacy at both levels 1 and 2.

Maghan has now successfully progressed on to our CACHE level 3 course.

Paula DanielPaula Daniel started on our level 2 Hairdressing course in September 2015. After successfully completing level 2, Paula completed her final level 3 qualification in June 2017. During her third year at college, Paula began to consider the possibility of setting up her own hairdressing business. With the support of our Head of Enterprise, Christine Bissex, Paula was able to attend a range of enterprise and skills training seminars with Big Ideas Wales. Our A Level Academy offers a choice of 29 AS and A2 Levels, all delivered by a team of professional and qualified staff. The majority of full-time A Level students follow a programme of three A Levels in addition to the WBQ.

Please note that students are required to take a minimum of three A-Level subjects.

Creative Industries Creative Industries incorporates Performing Arts, Drama, Music, Media, Film, Photography and Art & Design. Although the courses offered are very specific there are many opportunities for cross-curricular collaboration on large-scale projects. Motor Vehicle Technology The IMI is the professional body for people employed or seeking employment in the motor industry. As the leading awarding body for the retail motor industry, the IMI offers a range of Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQs), Vocationally Competent Qualifications (VCQs) or Diplomas. These courses are able to deliver the widest range of technical knowledge, which is necessary in order to become a skilled motor vehicle technician, master technician or allow progression to higher education. Erasmus Plus Trips AbroadEvery year level 2 and 3 Motor Vehicle learners have the opportunity to take part in work experience in Germany. Last year our level 2 motor vehicle student Dafydd Thomas, who previously studied at Aberdare Community School, was fortunate to spend his two weeks with Opel in Schleswig. Opel were so impressed with Dafydd that they offered him a full time position.

Susan Howe Susan started at the college on our Level 2 skills for further study course. When she began the course, she had very little confidence and self esteem. With help from her tutors she successfully completed her level 2 skills for further study and progressed on to the level access course. Foundation LearningThe College, Merthyr Tydfil offers a range of courses for learners who have a range of additional learning needs from Pre – Entry – Level 1.

Our Pre – Entry, Entry 1 and Entry 2 courses aim to develop your independence and social skills. Whilst those at Entry 3 and Level 1 prepare you for employment or further study on a mainstream course of your choice.

All courses provide opportunities for learners to work on their literacy, numeracy and IT skills and gain accredited qualifications in these areas. In addition all our courses provide tutorial support and work experience opportunities as well as a range of practical and creative activities.

Travis Bentley Travis came to the college from Maesgwyn Special School. He enrolled on our Entry Level 3 Diploma in life and living skills, which he successfully completed in June 2017. He has now progressed on to study on our BTEC level 2 Art and Design programme. In addition to doing well in his academic studies, Travis has made a real contribution to college life as both a student ambassador and member of the college’s learner assembly. Travis has given 100% to both roles, always willing to attend and help out at college events such as open evenings, prize evenings and visits from external organisations and agencies.
