At Uintah High School, we have been focusing on personal health and wellness and how self-care and good physical health habits can lead to good academic health and can foster the development of healthy academic habits.

We have a number of students who have applied for the summer program at Utah Valley University. We currently have three Upward Bound students who are serving in Upward Bound leadership roles. Two of these three students are preparing to attend a Leadership Conference that will be held in March at the Utah State University-Eastern Campus.

Some of seniors and all of our Junior Upward Bound students are preparing to take the ACT test during the month of February and are actively involved in an ACT preparation class currently being offered at Uintah High School.

Seniors are currently applying to colleges and making preparations to attend college post high school. Remember seniors, make sure you are applying for at least one scholarship a week. Completing the FASFA and hoping for federal aid is simply not enough.

As we finish up the units about resumés and cover letters, it’s a good time to think about your own personal “Brag Books.” (I’ve talked about this before, and I’m repeating myself because it’s SO important and helpful!!) Most people will keep this in a Google Doc, or something similar. The entire point is for you to keep track of any and all service, leadership, and (possibly) work-related opportunities that you participate in. Keep it simple: the date, activity, hours spent, and details about the activity. Some entries will be very short, while others, particularly those where you show leadership skills, will need to have more detail. Why keep a “Brag Book?” So that when you write a resumé, cover letter, fill out a college or scholarship application, all of this information is in one place, easily accessible. No matter how memorable a service project is, you will forget details without writing them down. Some of those details may make the difference in your applications, letters, etc. So start (or keep!) noting those details, and make your life a lot easier in the long run! Also, PLEASE remember that although some scholarships have closed by now, there are still many more that are still open! Many of the bigger (most money!) scholarships require you to start the process as a junior-start looking for them!

Hello All! We are almost through another school year! Keep up on your school work and finish strong! Those grades really do matter when you are applying for college. I hope all of you are thinking ahead to your college education. Have you thought of what you want to major in? Just recently I helped a student research what it would take to get a Graphic Design degree. We looked at the different options offered in the state of Utah, and what classes she would need to take. This helped her know what classes she needed to take in her last few years of high school. Your Upward Bound advisor can help you with similar situations. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. If you are going to be a junior or a senior next year seriously consider taking concurrent enrollment classes. These classes are college credits at a fraction of the price you will pay once you are out of high school. If you don’t take this opportunity you are missing out. In addition to getting college credit, some classes count as required credits you need to graduate from high school. If you have any questions about concurrent enrollment talk to your UB advisor.

“23 percent of full-time undergrads, who are 24 or younger, work 20 hours or more a week. This percentage should be higher. Statistics show that working during college is a good thing; contrary to what most students and parents believe. Working students are forced to organize their time, set aside time to study, and prioritize their lives around their work hours. And an added bonus is scoring some cash for college expenses.” https://www.teenlife.com/blogs/10-surprising-facts-about-college

Michael Jordan said, “I miss 100% of the shots I don’t take.” This also applies to scholarships! If you don’t apply, you can’t get the money! ALL

Upward Bound students should be actively looking for scholarships, because you never

know how many possibilities there are until you try.

Hey Upward Bound! I’m your 2018-2019 UB Vice President. My name is Nikki Hughes. I’ve been in Upward Bound for 3 years and I’m a senior in high school. I truly can’t believe that my high school years are almost over. They really mean it when they say high school flies by! With that being said, I want to encourage all of you to push yourselves out of your comfort zones. We often tend to stay in our comfort zones but some of the experiences that challenge us are the ones you learn the most from. I can’t wait for this year and I wish you all luck in finishing the 2018-2019 school year off strong!

-Nikki Hughes-

February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month. The high school graduation rate for the State of Utah in 2018 was 86%. Meanwhile, 95% of students who are CTE Pathway concentrators (students who complete at least 1.5 credits of CTE courses) graduated from high school in 2018. There are plenty of secondary and post-secondary options in Career and Technical Education in and out of the state of Utah. Give Career and Technical Education and CTE Pathways a serious look and consideration.
