Comprehensive Cancer Committee Chair
Dear Patients, Community Members and Colleagues:
Did you know that the AdventHealth Cancer Institute Waterman, formerly known as Florida Hospital Waterman Cancer Institute, is the most comprehensive cancer program in Lake County? We offer more services for cancer prevention and screening, diagnosis, treatment, education, support and survivorship than any other local cancer center. Most of these services are provided in one building for the ease and convenience of our patients and their families.
And our program uses leading-edge technology to help patients fight and beat cancer. We were the first in Lake County to offer the most innovative radiation therapy technology. Through our partnership with Florida Cancer Specialists, we are able to offer innovative treatments options through clinical trials. In addition, because we are part of the AdventHealth Cancer Institute, the largest cancer program in the state of Florida, we have access to even more cancer specialists and advanced technology so we can link our patients to additional resources when needed. Our expert team of physicians, nurses, technicians and support personnel are committed to providing complete and personalized care for each patient. Our service standards are based on the AdventHealth Whole Person Care philosophy to keep patients safe. We care for patients like they are members of our own families, make it easy for patients to access the health care they need, and work to quickly resolve any issues patients may have. This model is founded in AdventHealth’s mission, vision and values. What does all of this mean to you? It means that cancer patients in our community do not have to travel far from home for personalized high-quality care, expert clinicians, and the latest cancer therapies. We are by your side every step of the way to help beat cancer. Sincerely,

The best health care engages the body, mind, and spirt and each contributes to healing. That’s why we invest in people and technology, from the TrueBeam™ linear accelerator that targets tumors with pinpoint accuracy to cancer care coordinators who help patients coordinate medical appointments and provide emotional support to overcome the hurdles during cancer recovery.
Affiliations and National Accreditations
Cancer Care Navigators <COPY> INCLUDE PHOTOS OF NURSE NAVIGATORS WITH FOLLOWING PHOTO CAPTION. Eileen Bascombe, RN, Certified Cancer Navigator Holly Soucy, RN, Certified Cancer Navigator In 2017, AdventHealth Cancer Institute Waterman was the only hospital in Lake County to offer Cancer Care Navigators, specially trained and nationally certified nurses who serve as critical liaisons between patients and their medical team during treatment and recovery. The complimentary services include personalized education and support, assistance with appointment scheduling, follow-up on test results and consultations, and help accessing financial assistance and psychosocial support.

The Cancer Institute acquired Lake County’s first TrueBeam™ linear accelerator, a radiotherapy system that uses state-of-the-art synchronized imaging and dose delivery to produce more efficient and accurate imaging results. TrueBeam™ imaging technology makes it possible to treat tumors within a few minutes per session, delivering radiation faster and with pinpoint accuracy that results in less radiation exposure to the patient. Additional technological advances in radiation oncology have paved the way for the AdventHealth Cancer Institute Waterman to implement more non-surgical therapy options, including brachytherapy, a treatment with minimal side effects and shorter recovery times for some skin and prostate cancers.
Multidisciplinary Tumor Board A multidisciplinary approach is often used to determine the most effective individualized treatment plans for our patients. Each week a team of our specialty physicians meets to review and discuss individual cases before recommending the best course of treatment. During these weekly tumor board meetings, each case is also reviewed against the Clinical Practice Guidelines established by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), an alliance of leading cancer centers. These guidelines offer additional clinical evidence and support to ensure our patients are receiving the best treatment options. <Next Page>
CANCER REGISTRY Improving the survival and quality of life of our patients is our top priority. As part of our accreditation with the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, the AdventHealth Cancer Institute Waterman, formerly known as Florida Hospital Waterman Cancer Institute, maintains a Cancer Registry. This information system allows us to track and compare our cancer outcomes with other facilities across the country. The collective data helps us stay up to date on successful treatment trends and clinical trials, and guides us in designing programs to keep our community better educated about the importance of cancer screenings and prevention. QUALITY PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT
Breast Cancer Statistics
In 2016, the American Cancer Society reported about 249,260 breast cancer cases diagnosed in the United States. Of those, 246,660 were women and 2,600 were men. Thanks to increasing early detection and cutting-edge treatments, mortality from breast cancer has decreased 39 percent over the past decade, leading to approximately 320,000 fewer deaths and an estimated 3.5 million breast cancer survivors. At AdventHealth Waterman, formerly Florida Hospital Waterman, breast cancer in women continues to be the primary cancer site. Of 166 patients diagnosed with and/or treated for breast cancer in 2016, 98 percent – or 163 – were women and 2 percent – or three patients – were men. Age Group at Diagnosis Of patients diagnosed with breast cancer at AdventHealth Waterman, more than 50 percent were 40 to 69 years old. When narrowed to 60 to 69 year-old patients, that group represented more than 25 percent of the total, which is similar to the national average.

AdventHealth Waterman Breast Cancer Program The Team Our breast cancer program is led by Dr. Borys Mascarenhas, clinical quality director of AdventHealth Waterman’s Cancer Program and Lake County’s only fellowship-trained surgical oncologist. Dr. Mascarenhas, along with his multi-disciplinary team, provides state-of-the-art care in a private-practice setting, ensuring each patient receives individualized care tailored to his or her needs. The breast cancer care team includes a diverse group of professionals specially trained to deliver quality treatment and related support:
• Surgeon
• Radiation Oncologist
• Medical Oncologist
• Radiologist
• Pathologist
• Plastic Surgeon
• Nurses
• Social workers
• Nutritionists
• Genetic counselors
Each patient’s case is discussed during a weekly conference in which the team reviews the biology of each patient’s tumor, the stage on presentation, and health of the patient. The patient’s lifestyle and personal choices are also considered. In 2019, the AdventHealth Waterman breast cancer program will apply for accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. Treatments For patients with stages I, II or III breast cancer, treatment focuses on curative intent – with survival of five years or more. These treatment therapies often consist of surgery, radiation therapy to the breast, chest wall and lymph nodes, chemotherapy, and/or hormonal therapy.
For more information or to refer a patient, call (352) 253-3333 or visit our website at https://www.adventhealth.com/hospital/adventhealth-waterman 23
In some cases, cancer treatment can be long term (5 years). Based on size of the tumor at diagnosis or the involvement of lymph nodes, patients are initially treated with chemotherapy and/or hormone therapy prior to surgery. The most common first course of treatment for breast cancer patients at AdventHealth Waterman in 2016 was surgery combined with hormone therapy at 28 percent. Breast Cancer Cases Diagnosis by Gender

Meeting the Needs of Our Community
Staying up to date on the community’s health care needs allows us to promptly evaluate

Improving Access to Cancer Care for All Lake County Residents
The most common barriers to cancer care identified by a recent Lake County health assessment
are health insurance and financial issues, lack of knowledge of available local resources,
challenges with palliative and advanced care planning, and obstacles to off-site outpatient
treatment and transportation. AdventHealth Cancer Institute Waterman strives to break down
the barriers by:
• Offering online and phone support by a cancer care navigator who can assist with
setting up appointments and consultation, securing imaging and test results, addressing
financial support needs, and designing long-term survivorship care plans
• Increasing community outreach by cancer care navigators and oncology social worker
through hospital programs and local charitable organizations
• Providing patient education through local physician offices
• Implementing Palliative Care Distress Screenings and telephone follow-up to identify
and support patients facing emotional and social distress during treatment
• Providing inpatient Palliative Care and advanced care planning services
• Increasing awareness and availability of cancer screenings for early detection
• Offering access to an oncology Financial Counselor
• Providing transportation assistance

Supporting Survivors
AdventHealth Cancer Institute Waterman is dedicated to improving the quality of care for survivors as they move beyond their cancer treatment. In 2017, 60 patients received survivorship care plans within six months of treatment completion. Individualized care plans are shared during one-on-one meetings between patients and their cancer care navigator, nurse and/or physician. <Next Page>

FOUNDATION
Thanks to the generosity of our donor partners, the AdventHealth Waterman Foundation,
formerly known as Florida Hospital Waterman Foundation, raises thousands of dollars annually
that help fund valuable services to improve the health of our community.
For more information or to refer a patient, call (352) 253-3333 or visit our website at https://www.adventhealth.com/hospital/adventhealth-waterman 29
In 2017, the Foundation raised more than $30,000 to support Cancer Care Services, with an
additional $23,000 raised through events and promotion and nearly $13,000 contributed by
other local organizations.
Each October, the hospital kicks off its annual “Pinking Out” celebration with a number of
activities and educational events created to encourage breast cancer awareness, including the
Pink Out 5K Run/Walk, the Ladies Legacy Luncheon and a direct mail campaign.
Proceeds from these events are used to promote breast cancer awareness, and provide
financial and educational support for early detection and screening. Contributions to the
AdventHealth Waterman Foundation in 2017 made it possible for us to conduct 122 screening
mammograms for women who might not have otherwise been able to receive the early
screening procedure.
2017 Contributions and Distributions
Contributions

• Raised by partner organizations o Designated for cancer care $ 6,584
o Designated for screening mammograms $ 6,248

CLINICAL TRIALS
Clinical trials are research studies aimed at evaluating if a new treatment, like a new cancer
drug, is safe and effective. Often a clinical trial is used to explore whether a new treatment is
more effective and/or has less harmful side effects than the standard treatment. AdventHealth
Cancer Institute Waterman, formerly known as Florida Hospital Waterman Cancer Institute,
gives patients the opportunity to participate in the newest therapies to fight cancer through a
variety of clinical trials.
