Welcome to the 2018 Illinois Water Polo All State and Hall of Fame Awards Banquet. It’s been another great high school season. Tonight is our opportunity to honor the athletes, coaches, and Hall of Fame inductees as they take their place in history as being the “Best of the Best.” Congratulations on a tremendous high school season to all our award winners as we prepare to recognize them this evening.

I would like to take a moment to do a quick round of thanks to the following individuals for their efforts with Illinois Water Polo in putting all the details of this event together along with all the other things they do to keep water polo moving forward in Illinois. A very special thank you to Tom Musch for compiling the Slide Presentation for our event tonight and hosting the Illinois Water Polo picture website. Special thanks to our officers, Beto Garcia (Vice-President), Elizabeth Timmons (Secretary), Ron Biamonte (Treasurer). Committee representatives are Perry Korbakis (Referees), Jeff Wimer, Nancy O’Brien Kane, Pat Bauer, and Rich Norman (Hall of Fame), Chris Cloy (Player Recognition), Jesse Zien (Website), and Sally Stelnicki and Carol Macola (Banquet and Awards). Our Liaisons are Beto Garcia (Chicago Park District Liaison) and Tim Daniel (USAWP Liaison). Running our leagues are Rob Lindgren (Summer League) and American Water Polo (Fall & Winter Leagues). I would also like to thank all those that have attended IWP meetings this past year. Your participation and support is greatly appreciated.

This summer, Illinois Water Polo will be hosting a coaching clinic on Sunday, June 10th at the Arlington Park Race Track. I hope to see many of our coaches to attend this great event which will be followed by a few hours of fun at the track. If you coach a team that participates in the IWP summer high school league, your fee to attend the clinic has been waived! More information can be found on IWP’s website.

Lastly, Illinois Water Polo will be holding elections for a variety of volunteer positions this November. Anyone interested in promoting and growing the great sport of water polo in Illinois is welcomed and encouraged to help Illinois Water Polo with its mission of educating athletes, officials, and coaches on the proper game play of water polo and recognizing athletes, officials, and coaches for outstanding performance and service to Illinois water polo.

Enjoy the event this evening, and I hope to see you in a pool sometime soon!

ABOUT JOHNJohn Murphy is Chicago and Illinois Water Polo. He has played the sport since he was a little kid...All throughout high school, college, and AAU. He is currently a coach at the high school level. John was one of the toughest players when he competed. He could score, pass, play defense and even coach…as he did for many years even while playing for the Chicago Apostles. I personally played against John Murphy in high school and college and later became his teammate. Believe me, it was much better being his teammate than playing against him. You heard of the expression: “it’s not the dog in the fight, but rather the fight in the dog?” That’s John Murphy. As a teammate you could always count on Murph to watch your back, both in the water and on the deck after a tough game. He scored when he had to, he many outstanding pin point accurate passes that lead to many breath taking goals, he often times guarded the biggest and toughest player on the opposing team. He never missed a summer tournament when he was an active player. He traveled all over the country representing our city and state playing water polo…even internationally. I am proud of John and all his accomplishments to the sport of water polo, to the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois. I was fortunate enough to play with him for some 12 years on the Apostles. I am even more fortunate to call him my friend. I strongly and highly recommend John Murphy for the Illinois Water Polo Hall of Fame.

    Ray ZeasonWater Polo Achievements

    Nominated by Rich Norman

Ray began playing water polo at Blackhawk Park in the 1960’s for Coach Ken Wollen. While a student at Weber High School Ray joined with Steve Borowski and Ken Langowski to form a championship water polo team at both Blackhawk Park and Weber. Ray was on several Chicago Park District age group championship teams while in high school. Upon graduation Ray went to Northwestern University where he swam and played club water polo. Ray was a left-handed 2meter set player, a dangerous combination. After graduation from Northwestern, Ray served as an officer in the Armed Forces. Once his enlistment was completed, Ray attended John Marshall Law School.

Ray also played water polo at the Illinois Athletic Association where he competed in several international tournaments. Ray represented the Chicago Park District on several traveling All-Star teams where he played on a team that won the AAU Junior Nationals. He also played on several CPD senior mens championship teams at Blackhawk in 1968-69. Ray was also a pioneer in establishing women’s water polo at Northwestern. Ray coached a women’s team for two years while he attended law school.

Around 1980, Ray moved to Hawaii where he practiced family law. Ray was recognized in this profession as well where he developed mediation and reconciliation programs for families going through divorce proceedings. Many of these protocols are common today but were revolutionary at this time.

Ray Zeason passed away early in 2018 after a recurrence of cancer in several organs.

Abbie Lukas Mundelein High School, George Washington UniversityAbbie Lukas has been an incredible asset to our water polo program. On a daily basis, she consistently demonstrates her academic and athletic demeanor, great leadership skills and people skills. It is because of these qualities that she is admired for her hard work and dedication to her schoolwork, the game of water polo, her teammates, and service to the school and community. In addition to Abbie’s thorough preparation and her high level of energy, two of Abbie’s most endearing characteristics are her sense of pride and determination. Abbie is always the first one on deck every day and she practices with the same speed and intensity as she plays in games. Molly McGuire Fenwick High School, Indiana UniversityMolly started playing water polo in the fourth grade. She was a four-year varsity starter who holds herself and her teammates to high standards. She believes that the decisions and actions of the team are the entire team’s responsibility and all teammates should demonstrate accountability. Molly earned All-Conference honors from 2015-2018 and All-Sectional honors throughout her high school career. She was also an All-State player for 2016, 2017, and 2018. This year, she was named MCAC Senior Player of the year and is a NISCA, American Water Polo, and USA Water Polo Academic All American. While she began as more of a defensive player, she has developed her offensive game during the latter part of her high school career. Molly’s communication in the pool helps set the tone for her team, and she fosters a spirit of camaraderie among her teammates. Her leadership has helped the team develop into a cohesive group with a unified goal. Molly will continue her water polo and academic career at Indiana University, where the Hoosiers are sure to benefit from her many talents.

Jack Otto Libertyville High School, Bucknell UniversityJack has all the qualities of an ideal team player: humble, hungry, and smart. Jack stepped up to play goalie for Libertyville as a junior and worked year-round to improve his skill set by continually talking game strategy and asking for feedback. He realizes that he still has a lot to learn. Jack is always the hardest worker in the pool and he accepts congratulations with incredible amounts of modesty. Jack has the competitive spirit that every goalie needs and the team relies on him to bring energy to every game and he does not back down against any competitor. During his Junior season, he was the team MVP and honored with All-Conference and All-Sectional accolades. While Jack has an impressive water polo resume, his greatest attributes lie in his integrity and work ethic, which extend far beyond the pool. Jack is a stand out in the classroom and admired by teachers and staff in the building. He is a leader for a school program that promotes healthy lifestyle choices for all students. Jack is the epitome of a student-athlete and will attend Bucknell University in the fall.

Kaysie StubaLyons Township High School, Villanova UniversityKaysie has been a strong influence in and out of the pool through her determination and passion for water polo and very strong work ethic. As a freshman, she was on the varsity team and over the last 4 years, Kaysie has worked to develop her water polo skills and has become a gifted athlete, fierce competitor and loyal teammate. This past year, her leadership skills shined as she was elected a co-captain of the water polo team. She makes it a priority to ensure that her teammates are successful by listening to their concerns and taking action. She has been a problem solver and has learned how and when to offer constrictive criticism. She demonstrates good sportsmanship through her honesty, integrity, selflessness and compassion. Kaysie is an example for each of these characteristics whenever she plays the game she loves. Her demonstrated leadership, initiative and vision have made a positive impact on our water polo community. She will continue pursue her education and water polo at Villanova University.

  • Two Options to Participate in Water Polo Combine 2018• Combine Only – 8am to 4 pm on Wednesday, July 11th, 2018

    • Combine PLUS – Attend on Tuesday, July 10th through Thursday, July 12th

    - Practice/Perform Combine skill measurements, drills, and scrimmage on the day ahead of the Combine

    - Participation in a 1-day Tournament vs teams made up of Combine PLUS athletes

    - Film analysis and feedback from Tournament Games

On July 11th, 2018, we will again connect the top male and female high school water polo athletes to many of the top college coaches/programs in a unique, one of a kind opportunity at the University of Pittsburgh’s Trees Pool. We would like to invite you to display your skills and playing ability at the 2018 Water Polo Combine. All Boys and Girls graduating 2019, 2020 or 2021 are welcome to attend.

One of the biggest challenges for high school water polo athletes and parents is gaining exposure to and making connections with collegiate coaches and programs. This is particularly true for male and female high school water polo athletes outside of the State of California. At the Combine, athletes will get the opportunity they so badly need; to display their abilities in front of coaches by whom they are rarely ever seen. This is an opportunity to shine, to make contacts and most importantly to possibly open doors to the next level of education and athletic participation. For grade-eligible athletes and their parents, this is also an opportunity to directly interact with coaches.

Combine PLUS We have added Combine PLUS this year’s program. For an additional $150 per athlete, Combine Plus will allow participants to practice the Combine’s compulsory skill measures and timed activities ahead of Combine day. Additionally, athletes will participate in a 1-day tournament against all-star teams made up of other Combine PLUS athletes. Moreover, we will utilize film from our games to provide small group film study after each game to advice on improvement opportunities and to help athletes with their performance on Combine day. Athletes outside of California have so few opportunities to play against top-level competition. We hope that Combine PLUS+ will be at least one such opportunity given all of the top athletes that will be assembled in Pittsburgh for the Combine.
