Dear Friends in Christ,
It brings us great pleasure to introduce you to the three projects of the 2018 Spring Appeal. Once again we are very excited to partner with the Diocese of Hyderabad in Pakistan and with NZCMS. This appeal will support:
• Anthony & Anne McCormick, Cambodia: Anthony and Anne McCormick have been NZCMS Mission Partners in Cambodia since 2011. They began their mission work by spening 2 years in Phnom Penh where their main focus was learning the Khmer language and culture. In 2013, they moved to the north-western provincial city of Battambang; and at the end of 2014 they began partnering with the World Mate Emergency Hospital where Anthony set up a Social Work department. Anne also works at the hospital where she started an activity programme for patients and caregivers.
• Diocesan Boys’ Hostel, Mirpurkhas, Pakistan: This project was supported as part of last year’s Spring Appeal. We are continuing our support this year. The Hostel is such a valuable asset in a region of very low education rates and where a large proportion of students do not have access to school. The Hostel is actively linked with the local church and much of the Christian leadership in the surrounding area is from former Hostel students. Funds received for this project will go toward the provision of water for the Hostel, building maintenance and repairs, discipleship and leadership development, educational costs and students’ breakfasts.
• Dawn Daunauda, Vanuatu: Dawn is a short-term Mission Partner with NZCMS for this year teaching diploma level English at Talua Theological Institute, which is run by the Presbyterian Church of Vanuatu, on the island of Espiritu Santo, the largest island in the Republic of Vanuatu. Dawn is an ordained priest with the Diocese of Nelson and is taking a year’s leave to serve in this mission.
You can read more about the projects for 2018 over the page. This booklet will provide the information needed to support the Spring Appeal and there are useful checklists on page 12 to assist.
We would greatly appreciate it if Treasurers could send in Spring Appeal contributions by 30th November 2018.
If you have any questions at all, please phone the office on (04) 473 5172 or email [email protected]

CambodiaSocial Work and Patient Recovery
Anthony and Anne McCormick, NZCMS Mission Partners
Anthony and Anne McCormick have been NZCMS Mission Partners in Cambodia since 2011. They spent 2 years in Phnom Penh where their main focus was learning the Khmer language and culture. In 2013, they moved to the north-western provincial city of Battambang; and at the end of 2014 they began partnering with the World Mate Emergency Hospital where Anthony set up a Social Work department.
Anne’s role involves hosting the many visitors and volunteers to the hospital and she has also started an activity programme for patients and caregivers. Through these creative programmes many Cambodians are helped both psychologically and physically. As people share their lives, often occasions arise where the social work team can assist. For example, a woman whose husband was recovering in hospital from an accident shared that their children had not yet started school as they had no money to purchase school bags. Clothing and bags were soon found for the family.
It is now almost forty years since the end of the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, yet the Khmer people are still struggling to recover from the physical and emotional devastation of that era. With almost 70% of the population under 30, there is a ‘missing generation’ resulting in a lack of older people as role models and mentors. Many educated and skilled people were killed and so a huge gap has been left in the skill set of Khmer people today.
Anthony and Anne have the opportunity of ministering into this situation by interacting with Cambodians who come across their path and helping them find hope in their lives and healing in Christ.
This year following their time of leave and home service, Anthony and Anne will continue to provide training and mentoring for the people they work with.
5
Anthony is involved in a new training partnership with Chab Dai, a coalition formed in 2005 that is committed to ending human trafficking and exploitation. Anne continues her role at the hospital, hoping to progress in mentoring her assistant to eventually take over the role.
6
Mirpurkhas, PakistanDiocesan Boys’ Hostel
Diocese of Hyderabad
We have supported this Hostel and the boys who attend for the past two years, and we are keen to continue our support.
The boys who enter the Diocesan Boys’ Hostel have completed their basic education; and attendance at the Hostel provides high school and college opportunities to enable the students to go on to make a difference in the lives of their families, churches and community.
The region they live in has very low education rates and a large proportion of students do not have access to school. Many families struggle to find ways to provide for their children. For families of faith, and for their children, the Hostel has been very significant in encouraging discipleship and leadership development. Much of the Christian leadership in the surrounding area, including both church and local organisations, is from former Hostel students.
As well as educational studies, the boys participate in religious and sports activities (especially football and cricket) as well as programmes designed to provide long-term life skills, such as personal budgeting, micro-enterprise and laptop skills; as well as programmes aimed at their social and spiritual growth. These diverse programmes enable a variety of visitors to interact with the boys.
Our contact is an NZCMS Mission Partner, who sends regular reports and photos. She writes: “We are very thankful for the support which has been received over the last two years, which has allowed us to continue the ministry among these boys. The stories, some of which we’ve been able to share with you over the year, always encourage me about the difference this is making in the boys’ lives - spiritually, educationally, relationally, vocationally and in many ways. My latest amazement was one of our senior students giving a speech in English to a visitor. Despite being in an environment where English is rarely used, Mohan was determined to improve and had the courage to use what he had in public (he also speaks at least 3 other local languages, but this now enables him to function in even more environments and increases his job prospects). The
7
Mirpurkhas boys did a great job organising games for the younger boys at Khipro last Saturday, showing confidence in leadership. I’m also so pleased to see the boys’ spiritual development - the Simply the Story bible study method has been really positive for the boys in discussing scripture and applying it to their lives…. ”
The boys’ families pay a small monthly fee towards costs and the Hostel has one other main partner who supports the Hostel, along with many local contributions, often in kind such as volunteer tutoring, trainings, leading programmes etc.; however they would not be able to continue the ministry of the hostel without our support.
Funds for this project will go towards water for the hostel ($934.56); Hostel maintenance and development ($2,039.00); discipleship and leadership development ($1,699.20); educational and life skills ($4,248.00); and students’ breakfasts ($1,529.24).
The total project goal for this year is NZ$10,450.

VanuatuTeaching EnglishDawn Daunauda, NZCMS Mission Partner
Dawn is taking a year’s leave of absence from the Diocese of Nelson to serve as a Mission Partner in Vanuatu, teaching English at Talua Theological Institute.
Her background includes being a member of the Nelson Diocese Overseas Mission Council for fifteen years and chairing the Tikanga Pakeha arm of Anglican Missions. She also served for six years on the Board of Anglican Missions.
In the last nine years she has ministered in the Awatere Joint Venture Parish (Anglicans, Presbyterians and others) situated along the north east coast of Marlborough’s wine country. There, she met many seasonal workers from Vanuatu. Dawn’s church was instrumental in providing pastoral care to these workers, who in turn often said to her “Mama Dawn, come to our islands!”
With that invitation in mind, Dawn has taken up the role as Mission Partner based at Talua College. As well as teaching English, she also encourages the students, both women and men, to be all that God has called them to be. This includes weekly devotions and hospitality. During holiday breaks Dawn continues to research mission and ministry opportunities.
Recently Dawn hosted a short-term mission team from Southland led by Dot Muir, Mission Motivator for the Diocese of Dunedin.
With funding support from Anglican Missions, a team including a couple of builders went to Talua College to put a new roof on their community centre.
11
The Centre is used for many activities, educational as well as for worship. Bringing with them many tools for the job the team’s builders worked on the roof and empowered the many students of Talua to work alongside them. Adjustments were made to the materials they had, and extra nails, caps and staples were bought to make the roof withstand the harsh conditions that it might face such as cyclones.
The women in the team assisted with myriad other jobs, such as minor repairs, gardening, painting, etc. and formed relationships with the women of the local village sharing skills such as quilt and basket making.
Note: Funds raised from the Spring Appeal will form part of the grant monies from Anglican Missions to support projects.

Do donations to the Spring Appeal count towards our Parish Missions Target?Yes. While all funds contributed will be allocated to your parish giving target and included in the Parish and Diocesan Giving Reports, please note that the aim of this Appeal is to raise funds beyond the Parish’s regular mission contribution where possible. We continue to be encouraged by the growing number of parishes who are becoming more connected with the projects of our Mission Partners.
Appeal CalendarAnglican Missions runs two appeals each year: the Lenten Appeal and the Spring Appeal. We also launch emergency appeals when required and endorse the emergency appeals of our partner CWS (Christian World Service).
