Art Starz: Canvas Kids (Ages 6+)Young artists will have a blast painting animals, still life and landscapes using a step-by-step method. Art Starz instructors will cover basic color theory and fun techniques that can be used to produce magnificent paintings every time. Your young artist will paint at least one large painting on canvas and one mini canvas with an easel as well as various sizes in between. A $20 supply fee is payable to the instructor on the first day of class. All supplies are of professional quality.

Art Starz: Young Masters (Ages 6+)Young master artists will have a week of creative fun as they draw and paint animals, landscapes and so much more! Students will learn painting techniques from a real Art Starz artist as they paint with liquid watercolors and use acrylics on canvas. They will also develop their drawing skills through the use of pencils and chalk pastels. All supplies are of professional quality. A supply fee of $20 is payable to the instructor on the first day of class.



Art Starz: Drawing Techniques (Ages 8+)Does your child have a love for drawing? Art Starz presents tips and techniques from an artist’s perspective that will encourage your child to draw like a pro! Young artists will have fun warming up with a variety of challenging exercises designed to help them identify value, proportions and composition. They will also learn to create compositions with impact using weight of line, observation, value and tone. A supply fee of $20 is payable to the instructor on the first day of class. All supplies are of professional quality.



Art Starz: Cartoon Drawing (Ages 6+)Does your child have a knack for doodling? Experienced Art Starz instructors will guide young cartoonists in creating a variety of drawings as well as their own original characters. Students will produce a three-panel comic strip and learn to incorporate word bubbles, inking and other elements of interest. Various types of hand-drawn animation including flipbooks and an animation wheel will also be created. Learning continues with tricks of famous cartoonists, optical illusions and an explanation on how cartoon movies work. A $20 supply fee is payable to the instructor on the first day of class. Art Starz: Watercolor Wonders (Ages 6+)Has your child ever wondered about the magic behind watercolor? This week young artists will learn a wet-into-wet painting method, dropping “jewels” and other techniques from a professional painter. They will have fun practicing and experimenting with different color combinations as well as different types of watercolor media. Young artists will produce small postcard sized paintings as well as large paintings that will be suitable for framing. Every artist will have one of their pieces framed to proudly display at home! New! Crayola® - World of Design (Ages 6-12)Students will take a journey to the farthest reaches of the imagination while learning about the rainforest, Hollywood, Mars and a futuristic city! Students will use the design thinking process to solve real-world problems in these different environments as well as experiment with Crayola® products and many art techniques like sculpting, storyboarding, collage and mixed media. Design careers like graphic design, universal design, urban design and product design will also be explored. Instruction provided by Imagine Arts Academy™ of Austin & San Antonio. All supplies are included.


Fashion Designer (Ages 8-12)Young girls graduate from playing dress up to designing their own fashions by using the same design principles used by professionals. Basic sketching techniques, coordinating colors for the best effect, mixing textures and patterns for scale and perception and applying cultural fashion history to each girl’s individual style and portfolio will be covered. Designs come to life with beautifully patterned papers, ribbons, sequins, jewels and oodles of other embellishments. Collaborative “design team” challenges make this hands-on, minds-on adventure into the world of design very exciting. No sewing is done in this class. Instruction provided by Fastforward Kids.


Music, Dance & DramaMove & Groove - Urban Art & Dance (Ages 5-10)Young dancers will move and groove as they explore self-expression through the arts. Classes start off with a fun and creative urban art lesson. Then we wipe our hands clean and get funky with an active hip hop session. Our week long workshops are great for first time dancers and we keep lessons challenging for our more experienced students. Student artwork and dance moves will be shown off to family and friends at our end of program art show. Students are separated into two groups during class, ages 5-7 and 8-10. Instruction provided by Onsite Youth Training.

Breakdancing 101 (Ages 5-10)Breakdancing is the most athletic and acrobatic branch of hip-hop dance. Young dancers will learn the value of hard work, determination, commitment and repetition through positive reinforcement and fun filled challenges. Classes will incorporate a fun, safe and efficient pathway to learning breakdancing starting with basic hip-hop dance moves then transition to more challenging breakdancing concepts under the instruction of Onsite Youth Training instructors. Young dancers will end the week with a mini performance to display their newly acquired skills. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes and bring a water bottle to each class.

iPianoLab (Ages 5-13)What’s the coolest thing your child can do this summer? Learn piano or keyboard with iPianoLab! While most students start out learning drills or “baby songs,” iPianoLab students get to play songs they like right from the first lesson! One Republic, SpongeBob, Taylor Swift, Super Mario Bros, Star Wars, even Bach and Beethoven are all within reach, right from the first class! This comprehensive approach teaches all the essential keyboard basics including note reading, counting and rhythms, chords and more! A child who likes practicing their songs is a child who will make rapid progress on the instrument. All supplies are included.

Culinary ArtsCreative Cookie Decorating 101 (Ages 7-12)Want to combine your child’s love of art and sweets? Creative pastry designer Amy Roussin presents a fun cookie decorating class where your child will learn different decorating techniques and layering through the week. They’ll travel from season to season decorating a variety of holiday treats with a mystery holiday chosen by the class! Emojis will even make their appearance as they have fun celebrating the seasons. A supply fee of $25 is payable to the instructor on the first day of class and includes a take-home container, cookies, icing and decorating tools. Recreation & SportsBasketball - Shoot, Score, Defend (Ages 5-11)Are your kids ready to have fun with basketball? Children will learn and develop the fundamental skills needed to play basketball at their personal best with TX Youth Sports. Skills will develop through specific and proven developmental drills, playing 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 games. We will focus on having fun while learning defensive techniques, ball handling, passing, catching and attack moves. Shooting techniques, spacing on the floor and game situations will also be covered. Students should bring a basketball and personal water bottle to each class.



Soccer - Go for the Goal (Ages 5-11)Some dream about goals... we make them. TX Youth Sports teaches fundamental drills and skills that will take your child’s soccer experience to the next level. Working in small groups and individually, students will learn essential drills including: passing and receiving the ball; using speed and space effectively; scoring and more! Daily scrimmages will provide an opportunity to practice the developed skills while having a fun time. Class is held indoors and both boys and girls are encouraged to attend. Athletes should bring shin guards, a soccer ball and personal water bottle to each class.



Volleyball - Bump, Set, Spike (Ages 6-12)Can they dig it? TX Youth Sports will cover drills, skills and proper footwork to help young athletes balance and move efficiently on the volleyball court. Serving, setting, spiking and hitting will be covered. Athletes will practice proper rotations and transitions through daily games. Above all, players are encouraged to dream big and play at their best. Athletes should bring knee pads, volleyball and a personal water bottle each day.

B3: Jurassic Jamboree - Dinosaur Dig! (Ages 4-8)Your little one will jump with excitement in this dinosaur exploration class with Bricks, Bots & Beakers (B3)! Junior paleontologists will learn all about dinosaurs, create fossils and coprolites, participate in a dinosaur dig and more. Class also includes dinosaur themed LEGO® building challenges and dinosaur crafts and games. A supply fee of $10 is payable to the instructor on the first day of class.



New! B3: Edible Engineering – Candy Construction! (Ages 5-12)This is an engineering class like none other because young engineers get to eat what they build! Each day students will encounter engineering challenges to build with (plastic) candy, followed up with edible challenges. Under the guidance of a Bricks, Bots & Beakers (B3) instructor, students will explore design concepts as they build edible trains, houses, jewelry, pirate ships, aliens, monsters, animals and more! Technology & Learning

Athletic Strength & Speed Training (Ages 8-12)Uplifted Performance and Fitness helps enhance athleticism through the development of speed and agility as well as enhancement of reaction, explosiveness and power to optimize performance. Athletes are challenged to increase movement, efficiency and technique (lateral, linear and multi-directional movement). Focus areas include acceleration, deceleration, plyometrics, change-of-direction and power training. Classes will also include competitive drills and challenges including ladders, cones, resistance equipment, hurdles, medicine balls and weights. Students should bring a water bottle and athletic shoes to each class.

By changing how students view simple objects, they will use the art form of parkour to overcome obstacles as swiftly and efficiently as possible using only their bodies. At any level of experience, parkour offers a full body workout, improves one’s ability to move, increases confidence and changes how one sees the world. Parkour is also a system of fitness training that improves strength, speed, agility, coordination, stamina, endurance and precision. Students should come dressed with closed toe shoes and bring a water bottle to each class.

Young builders will engage in hands-on learning and creative activities with “zillions” of LEGO® pieces under the supervision of a certified Fastforward Kids educator. Brainiac: Let’s Read! (Ages 4-7)This class is designed to build and support language through a love of reading and learning for beginning readers. As a research-based program, with highly individualized goals, your young reader will build a foundation of literacy that will support them throughout their academic career. Brainiac mentors will encourage your child to actively participate in reading, writing, oral language, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension - all while building their confidence. Using whole group, small group and one-on-one instruction, Brainiac meets the needs of varying ages and levels, all in one classroom, with an 8:1 student to teacher ratio. All supplies are included.


Snapology: Kinderbots (Ages 4-6)Children will explore the world of robotics as they build simple models that teach the fundamentals of robotic design. Whether learning about sensors while building drills and magic wands, or discovering ways that gears and pulleys create movement while building helicopters and robotic dogs, your child is sure to have a great time. Students will learn how to build and program their models using LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0 kits and age appropriate software on iPads®. It is never too early to start learning robotics with Snapology! All equipment is provided.



New! Snapology: Creature Creator Robotics (Ages 7-12)Young animal lovers will learn about gear ratio, sensors and programming as they build gorillas, dinosaurs and much more! Working in partners, students will use iPads® and LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0 kits to create and program their own animal inspired-robotic models that respond to motion, tilt, create fun sounds and more. Students are sure to have a wild time as they learn about pulleys while creating spiders, learn about wheels and axels as they create their very own dolphins and more! Students will use their critical thinking and programming skills to enhance their robotic builds while learning about gear ratio, sensors, simple machines, axels, gears, motors and more! Students will even program their builds that respond to motion, create sound, build loops or even tilt to sensors using easy-to-use drag and drop WeDo2.0 programming on iPads®. Brain Camp (Ages 8-14)Activate your child’s brain in this cognitive enrichment program. Brain Camp exposes kids to fun activities that build core brain skills including memory, attention and logic. Certified brain teachers provide insight on how to plan and set goals, solve problems, harness the power of a great attitude and use cool memorization tricks. Fun competitions, brain training, crafts and icebreakers are sure to keep young minds active. All supplies are included. Bits, Bytes & Bots: LEGO® Mindstorms® EV3 Robotics (Ages 9-13)Do your children love LEGO® bricks? Do they like to build? Do robots excite them? Then this program is for them! This week of robotics combines the fun of building robots with the ability to program them to do what you want. No experience is required. Students will learn about if/then logic, loops and other basic programming tools while having tons of fun using EV3 Mindstorms® kits. If you want your child to embrace STEM, choose this path. Instruction provided by Bits, Bytes & Bots of San Antonio.


New! Bits, Bytes & Bots: Soar into STEM (Ages 8-12)Introduce your child to multiple STEM fields before committing to one topic! You never know what will ignite a kid’s passion. This class introduces tomorrow’s STEM Masters to coding, programming, conditional formatting, movie making and robotics. This class will broaden your child’s horizon so that she or he can intelligently choose which areas to focus on in the future. Instruction provided by Bits, Bytes & Bots of San Antonio.



Robotics Clubs USA - Gears & Structures (Ages 8-11)Robotics Clubs USA presents the LEGO® Technic® system and Power City Construction® where Jr. engineers will learn how to integrate gears and pulleys into mechanical devices and structures. Various challenges will stretch students to think about gears in a new way. From discovering how to alter power and speed to converting directional energy in mechanical systems, students will take their problem solving skills to the next level!



New! Drones Jr. Flight School (Ages 8-12)Fastforward Kids merges the best in science and technology with the wonder of flight. Students will mix innovation with adventure as they apply real-world STEM concepts, learn about drone technology, build a drone using step-by-step instructions and complete flight challenges. While flying a drone is non-stop enjoyment, Fastforward Kids is committed to reviewing the responsibility, safety and dos and don’ts of drone flight. Students must be willing to obey and respect all federal rules and regulations prior to completing any drone challenges. Students will make new friends, play creative games and embrace what is soon to be one of the fastest growing technological career fields! All supplies are provided.


New! Robotics Clubs USA - Robot Races (Ages 7-14)JJ the Robot® needs your young engineer to help him cross the finish line! Young robotics enthusiasts will learn basic programming principles and discover how to problem solve using programming logic and the EV3 MindStorm® system. Students will program JJ the Robot® to solve simple mission-based tasks, compete in friendly missions and present their program ideas to the class throughout the week. Jr. Doctor Training & Dissection (Ages 7-12)Does your child dream of becoming a doctor? Junior doctors will observe and perform real-life “surgery” on a brain, the heart, eye and skin while learning about the skeletal, digestive, respiratory, circulatory and nervous systems. Jaws will drop when they experience what bones, muscles and fat look and feel like. Students will take home an information packet to continue learning after class! Instruction provided by former science teacher John MacLaren.



New! Jr. Pet Vet (Ages 5-10)Does your child dream of becoming a veterinarian? Do they enjoy helping pets, livestock and/or have a fascination with zoo animals? Then this class is for them! Students will gain hands-on experience as they learn the skills needed to become a veterinarian, tools and equipment used, the various specialties in animal care, health and much more. Throughout the week, the class will observe and dissect real hearts, shark, fetal pig and more under the instruction of former science teacher, John MacLaren. Care for common pets including how to feed, water, clean and properly love various pets will also be discussed. At the end of the week, each student will take home and care for one of the following stuffed pets: dog, cat, bird, snake, mouse, rabbit or other. This class is sure to build upon their curiosity about the veterinarian world!



Jr. Dissection (Ages 7-12)Do you remember dissecting in your high school science class? Here is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for your child to experience first-hand how structure and function work together through guided dissections. Former science teacher John MacLaren will teach safety, technique and science as students dissect various specimens. Yes – they really do most of the dissecting! This step-by-step learning adventure is sure to expand their curiosity as they look below the surface and delve deeper into the fascinating world of science. All materials are included.

Explode into Science (Ages 7-12)Students will tingle with excitement, both figuratively and literally, as they learn to make chemicals and gasses change shapes, states and explode. This is no ordinary science class as every day holds new experiments that include dry ICE, ping pong explosions, tornado tubes, implosion cans, film canister rockets and much more. Together, under the instruction of former science teacher John MacLaren, we will create the largest, biggest and messiest explosion of them all! Parents are invited for a Friday finale showcase guided by the young scientists themselves to see first-hand demonstrations of what was learned during the week. A one-of-a-kind marshmallow blaster war and water rocket experience is also included!



New! Mad Science: Moving with Science (Ages 6-12)Students will discover how things move in a week packed with science! Young scientists will take apart pellets to see what an owl cannot digest, view the world through a camera obscura and join a team of junior engineers in building bridges, domes, cubes and pyramids. Other activities include, assembling and controlling pulleys, levers, catapults and simple machines, making their own sidewalk chalk, crystal gardens and a chromatography-dyed T-shirt! Instruction provided by Mad Science of San Antonio.


New! Mad Science: Yuck-ology (Ages 6-12)Under the guidance of Mad Science of San Antonio instructors, students will make “brain goo” and check out their bones as they travel the organ trail. They will also step inside a scientist’s lab and get hands deep in activities that include making their own radical reactions, a crazy chemical clock, Mad Science mucus and more! Students will even discover the mysteries of cells with a slimy cell model, compare fingerprints and investigate a “sticky situation” crime scene. Students will put to use their new forensic skills to solve the crime! All supplies are included.


Mad Science: Red Hot Robots (Ages 7-12)It’s a robot world out there! Each day students will learn about the uses of robots in our world, experiment with different robot designs and learn about what makes a robot work. Students will build their very own working robot to take home to “live” with them at the end of the week. A supply fee of $30 is payable to the instructor on the first day of class. GENERAL INFORMATION— Classes in this publication are for youth only. We ask that you adhere to the age requirements listed in the course description. The Community Education Program of NEISD is conducted for the benefit and enjoyment of community patrons. Classes are offered for people of all ages regardless of where they live. Classes offered are non-credit. Financial support for the program comes from class tuition. Every effort has been made to make this publication accurate as of the publication date; however, all policies, tuitions/fees, instructors and class content are subject to change at any time by appropriate action of instructors or administrators of this program. All classes require pre-registration. Early registration is encouraged to avoid class cancellations due to low enrollment. REFUND POLICY—- We are happy to refund tuition, less a $5 processing fee, when you withdraw from your class prior to the first class meeting. We understand things happen from time to time that get in the way of you attending a course in which you enrolled and planned to attend. If this is your situation, please give us a call and we will issue a credit of the tuition paid that can be applied to any course you wish to take in the future. Requests must be made by calling Community Education at 407-0140 option 3. Refunds for payments made by credit card will be processed to same card used and will take 24-48 hours. Refunds for cash and check payments will be made by check and will take 7-10 business days for processing.CANCELLATIONS—If we cancel your class, you will be offered the choice of an alternative class, holdover credit or full refund. Holdover credit can be used toward any class. Registrants will be notified by e-mail or phone if class has been canceled. Refer to “Refund Policy” above if you wish to withdraw from your class. CONFIRMATION of registrations will not be sent. You will be contacted only if a class is canceled or is already full when your registration is received.RETURNED CHECKS—A fee will be charged for each returned check.SUPPLY/FOOD FEES —Some classes have a supply fee which is payable to the instructor at the first class.
