50 Yr Nona Schwartzbeck

It takes someone who is dedicated and truly believes in what the 4-H program can offer to today’s youth to stick around for 50 years as a volunteer. Nona Schwartzbeck happens to be one of those volunteers who has spent 50 years giving back to the Maryland 4-H Program. She has instilled the 4-H motto of “Making the Best Better” every day of her life and it is a motto that she has passed down to her children and grandchild and many other 4-H members she has worked with over the years. Miss Nona has taken on many roles throughout the years. Just to mention a few of them…she served as the Fair Chair twice, ran the dining hall for many years, has been on many committees for the 4-H and FFA Fair including the dairy committee, and she heads up the Friend of the Fair and Hall of Fame awards. However, she is probably best known to many of you in the room as the Silent Auction Chair during the fair, raising thousands of dollars to support the fair and cover state contest fees for our 4-H members. We could go on and on about everything she has done, but we want you to know how much we appreciate everything she does for the 4-H program and how she always puts the 4-H member first. Congratulations, Nona Schwartzbeck, on your 50th year as a Maryland 4-H Volunteer. 2017 Promotional Display Contest Results – Throughout the year, but particularly during National 4-H Club Week, October 1 through 7, 2017, clubs are busy promoting the 4-H program in various ways. These clubs entered the promotional contest by securing display locations at local businesses and schools. Table Top Display: Champion – Chevonaire 4-H Club Reserve Champion – Rolling Clovers 4-H Club Window Display: Champion – Gaither 4-H Club Reserve Champion – Clover Buddies 4-H Club Banner: Champion – Progressive Clovers 4-H Club Reserve Champion – Lineboro 4-H Club Grand Champion Display: Progressive Clovers 4-H Club Reserve Grand Champion Display: Gaither 4-H Club Other clubs participating included: Carrollton 4-H Club, Fine Feathered Friends 4-H Club and Sam’s Creek 4-H Club

(*Denotes Champion) Senior Portfolio Program: The Senior Portfolio is composed of two parts: the Resume and the Essay. The Resume is 3 pages documenting your 4-H career. After completing the Junior Summary Report Form for six years, the senior resume becomes very easy. All the things a youth does and learns as a beginning 4-H’er is turned into a resume which is evaluated for Leadership, Citizenship, and Life Skills Development. Below are some of the things that are evaluated with the resume. In addition, the other component of the Portfolio is the Essay. The State Awards and Recognition Committee determine the Essay Question for each year. It is a two page essay where each 4-H’er can shine!

Page 23: 2018 Carroll County 4-H Achievement Program · Achievement Program 2018 Carroll County 4-H ... The University of Maryland is an Equal Opportunity Employer and Equal Access Programs

Each county is allowed to send 10 Portfolios to the State 4-H Office for evaluation and competition for Out of State National Trips, which are National 4-H Congress, Camp Miniwanca, West Virginia 4-H Older Camp and Virginia 4-H Older Camp. In the fall, there are also applications for National 4-H Conference. In Carroll County, youth are also asked to submit a “Supplemental Piece” with their portfolio. We encourage everyone to take time to review those pieces which are on display.

o Summarize your leadership activities, citizenship activities, and life skills acquired. Be explicit and use duties and numbers, where appropriate.

o Citizenship – indicate significant citizenship efforts and impacts. o Leadership – indicate major leadership roles and impacts. o Life Skills – indicate special achievements; focus on knowledge and skills gained through

4-H involvement. Some life skills include: • Managing - keeping records, wise use of resources, planning/organizing • Thinking - problem solving, critical thinking, decision making, learning to learn • Living - disease prevention, personal safety • Being - self responsibility, self-discipline, character • Working - teamwork, self-motivation, contribution to group effort • Giving - community service, leadership • Caring - sharing, empathy, concern for others • Relating - communication, cooperation, social skills, accepting differences.

Engineering, Science and Leadership Challenge – Henry Brunnett Carroll County Commissioner’s Tray: This award is presented to the individual who best exemplifies the “model 4-H’er” through their leadership, citizenship, and achievements through their entire 4-H career. This year, the essay question for the 4-H’ers to respond to was: What would you suggest 4-H do to increase involvement from youth your age? “The 4-H program is a great opportunity for youth of any age. To increase and keep involvement for older 4-H members, the organization should support programs that support trade skills, connect with high schools to advertise the opportunities of 4-H, and develop various workshops pertaining to college and career readiness. The skilled trades rank high among blue-collar jobs that are hard to fill. 4-H is a logical place to promote the in-demand skills that future tradespeople need. Another way to increase involvement from older teenagers is to recruit new members from outside the program. There are plenty of kids who were never exposed to 4-H or were unable to join at a young age. To do this, clubs can have displays during 4-H week in surrounding schools to show off their programs. There is no doubt that members can be more prepared to be successful in life with the help of 4-H.” Congratulations to Henry Brunnett the 2017 Commissioners Tray Award Winner.

Page 25: 2018 Carroll County 4-H Achievement Program · Achievement Program 2018 Carroll County 4-H ... The University of Maryland is an Equal Opportunity Employer and Equal Access Programs

24

Repeat Commissioners Tray Winner It’s not often that we have a 4-H member continue to submit their portfolio after being selected a Commissioners Tray Winner, but last year’s winner did just that. “To attract more high school-aged members, 4-H should build a stronger social media presence, create new project areas and get more involved at the high school level. Students have various profiles on different social media platforms like Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube and more. The best way for 4-H to increase participation would be to participate fully on social media as well…. Overall 4-H does a great job of incorporating students of all ages, but by making social media, expanding project areas and working along high schools they could reach many more.” Congratulations to Tessie Weant, the 2018 Repeat Commissioners Tray Winner.

His club leader states, “He is the first to jump in with setting up a meeting or preparing for an activity and cleaning up. 2018 Miss Carroll County 4-H:

This year’s Miss 4-H has a strong background with leadership and citizenship activities and a positive attitude. Not only does she excel in 4-H, but her teacher noted, “She is a rarity in my opinion. Not only has she managed to uphold exemplary grades throughout her high school career, but she has done so while being a well-rounded, caring and reliable adult.” She has been a leader in many ways for her club, county and state and we are excited for the next year working with Payton Steele, this year’s Miss 4-H.
