2018 DAREARTSLeadership Awards
In 22 years, DAREarts has empowered 220,000 Canadian children in underserved communities
to be their best selves, thanks to you.
In out-of-school workshops, the children are exposed to a wider world of ideas and opportunities. While they create using all the arts, they practice the DARE values of Discipline, Action, Responsibility and Excellence to
be leaders. This gives them the confidence and courage to combat life challenges with hope for their future.
Thank you for empowering more kids to DARE to lead.

How do you explain how some people are able to defy the odds and achieve in life? It comes down to what you value, to the dreams you
have, the choices you make. I like to say when most people come to a fork in the road, they see two options: go left or go right. What they don’t see is that there’s a third option: go straight ahead and make a new road. From How We Did It: The Subban Plan for Success in Hockey, School and Life
Karl Subban is known as the ultimate hockey dad to Malcolm, Jordan and P.K., all in the NHL, as detailed in his memoir, How We Did It: The Subban Plan for Success in Hockey, School and Life. Perhaps his biggest accomplishments are less celebrated: for 30 years, Karl was an educator in the Toronto District School Board, affecting positive change at some of the toughest schools. He did so by instilling values that are shared by DAREarts: empowering kids to take responsibility for their actions, respect themselves and each other, and be excellent in all they do.
The bigger the dream, the more important the team. Our children need a team they believe in and one that believes in them too….
it’s a learned skill.

2018 DAREarts Cultural Leadership Award Recipient
The DAREarts Cultural Award
The DAREarts Cultural Award is presented annually to individuals who have led the way in cultivating culture for Canadian youth. The medallion was created by internationally acclaimed sculptor, the late Dora dePédery-Hunt, O.C, O.Ont, and Andrew Kuntz singularly creates each glass sculpture to hold the medallion.
Tonight is all about opportunity.
Six young leaders will share the opportunity that DAREarts provided them to become voices for success as they complete school and join the work force. They represent 220,000 young people across Canada who, over 22 years, have ‘DAREd’ to unlock their potential with Discipline, Action, Responsibility and Excellence.
Tonight, we also celebrate Karl Subban, exemplary TDSB educator, dad to five and ‘hockey dad’ to NHL stars. He will challenge us to think differently about equal opportunity.
Finally, tonight is your opportunity to care; only together can we empower even more young people to find the confidence and courage to be leaders who ignite change!
Sincerely, DAREarts Marilyn Field Tarik Muzaffar Eileen Crichton Founder & President Board Chair Event Chair
Welcome to your opportunity to change lives!

I was identified as dyslexic when I was in grade 2. I was picked on so much that I finally stopped asking questions. By the time
I got to middle school, I had lost all my confidence. DAREarts was a safe environment that let me be me. My parents noticed a change in my attitude right away. Having a learning disability doesn’t mean I’m not smart. I learn differently. I am not embarrassed by it anymore and DAREarts has a lot to do with that.

Growing up, many things complicated my childhood. I grew up held to impossible standards, and I was scared to admit that
the closest people in my life may not have been the best people. I’ve always been outspoken, especially for what’s right and wrong. DAREarts exposed me to adults who led me to a myriad of beliefs and causes rather than pointing me to one specific thing. Because DAREarts provided me with the structure that I needed as a kid, I continue to speak out for what’s right and wrong.

Growing up I was extremely shy. DAREarts provided me with a supportive environment where I could use my arts skills
in fun ways plus learn important life skills such as confidence and communication. This platform gave me courage to take risks and develop my interpersonal skills. Now as a young adult, I DARE on a regular basis and in 2014 I used my discovered leadership abilities to start my own karate school. I am currently applying for MBA programs. I plan to start my own community centre dedicated to youth outreach.

The life challenges I’ve gone through is bullying when I was in elementary. I used to be getting punched and called names.
DAREarts helped me be around the people I didn’t use to hang around with and today I am friends with the people who used to like bullying me. DAREarts really helped the youth in Webequie who were disrespecting me and other people. I like to connect my culture and attend any kind of an event. I share information about my culture with the DAREarts team that comes here.

Growing up with anxiety has been my greatest struggle. DAREarts often dared me to step out of my comfort zone. It was scary, but
empowering…I did what I thought was the impossible. DAREarts taught me to use my inner leader to make a positive difference around me. I see my classmates who are struggling and I try my best to reassure them that they’re going to be alright. My long term goal is to simply think positive. I’ll keep replacing a negative thought with a reassuring thought.

I was raised in Kenya by my grandma, my aunties and uncles. When I was 5, I came back to Toronto. School here was hard
because I knew only Swahili until I learned English. DAREarts helped me with working with different people, making new friends and being independent. Now when friends are about to make a bad decision, I give them another solution. My goal is to be an architect or work in construction or the military. I have always wanted to join the military, travelling the world to help anyone who needs it.
