For both replicated and observation entries, yield of ten feet per replication was obtained by pulling the plants and hand picking the pods. An Almeco thresher was used to shell the pods. Seeds were hand graded to remove the splits and blemished seeds prior to processing. Seed count is a true sample of what was harvested. Soil moisture was minimal at planting. Supplemental irrigation was provided. It was dry and warm until the end of July when rains began. Moisture after this was excessive. Dry down was difficult and we hand harvested and finished drying in a building. The big take home from this was plants had pinned and had set pods when rainfall kicked the plants back to vegetative stage and they put on more leaves. This resulted in secondary set and closing of canopy. Heavy rains also knocked down all plants to some degree. For this reason, I did not try to estimate plant habit or plant height and width. Maturities were difficult to estimate as well. See the weather insert at the end of the summary for a breakdown of temperatures and precipitation over the growing season. Interested seed reps and industry were invited to visit and a few looked at the beans in early September. Furman Foods processed each cultivar for the cutting in March. A cutting was held on March 15th to evaluate canned product. Evaluations of the canned product are included in Table 4. Jim Ballerstein, NYSAES, 630 West N. PROCEDURE AND MATERIALS Location: NYS Agricultural Research Farm – Gates Road, Geneva - soil type - Lima silt loam Planting Dates: 6/14/18 Row Width: 30 inches, Row length: 30 ft. In-row Spacing: (Kidneys and cranberries – 5-6 seeds/ft., blacks, navies and small reds - 6-8 seeds/ft.) Conventional Tillage Fertilizer: 300#/A of 8-14-21 Herbicide: Basagran, Reflex and Raptor post emergence (6/26) Planter - Two Row Monosem Vacuum Planter Plot Size: 1 row 35 ft long - 4 replications (4 replications harvested)

The objective of this trial was to compare the performance of new varieties with the industry standard varieties in terms of yield, maturity, height of pods, disease resistance, adaptation to NYS growing conditions and quality. This was accomplished in cooperation with the NYS Dry Bean Industry in an attempt to find new, higher quality, and disease resistant varieties that are adapted to our climate and soil conditions.

Interested seed reps and industry were invited to visit and a few looked at the beans in earlySeptember. Furman Foods processed each cultivar for the cutting in March. A cutting was held on March 15th to evaluate canned product. Evaluations of the canned product are included in Table 4.

We wish to thank the NYS Dry Bean Association and cooperating seed companies ADM, Provita and Treasure Valley for their financial support of the project. John McCreedy was extremelyhelpful in helping plan the trial. We especially want to thank Chuck Paige, Kim Raczka and Sandy from Furman Foods, Inc. for processing the seed for the industry cutting.

Special thanks to my crew - Floyd Baker, Alison Mahoney, Kim Day, Noah Czadzeck and Jeremy Frere for their assistance in day to day operations.

Heavy rains knocked plants down making it difficult to give ameaningful evaluation.

Plant Height - From soil surface to top of the plants. Unable to do.

Plant Width - Howwide the plant was which also indicates plant habit to some degree.

Pod length (inches)- ten random pods weremeasured and the range listed

Maturity - As pods dried down, they were compared to the standards of each group which were assigned a zero days.

Maturity was difficult to estimate due to regrowth of plants after drought.

Average moisture - After threshing, a moisture meterwas used to determine moisture %. This was the time

that count per poundwas also determined.

Average count per pound - 100 seeds were weighed and extrapoloated for a count per pound.

Average plants per foot - The number of plants in the 10 foot yield plot listed as plants per foot.

Average pounds per acre - 10 ft of plot were harvested and threshed. This yield was extrapolated to a pounds per acre.

B3036368 – estimated to be two days ahead of Zorro and Zenith, very good yield.

Eclipse – Estimated to be one day ahead of Zorro and Zenith, shorter plants, the lowest yield. This one could be planted at a shorter between the rows spacing to increase yield per acre.

B5054341 – Pods just a bit longer than others, estimated to be one day ahead of Zorro and Zenith, very good yield.

Zenith (std) – Considered a standard for this type, assigned zero days maturity to compare against, larger seeds than most others, very good (best) yield.

Zorro (std) - Considered a standard for this type, assigned zero days maturity to compare against, very good yield.

Cutting Evaluations from Industry On March 15, industry and growers looked at canned product of everything we evaluated in thefield. We had salt and sauce for both the dark and light red kidneys, Ca8 and Ca12 for the white kidneys, salt for the cranberries, FG added and non FG for the blacks, Pintos had Ca9, Navies were both salt and sauce and Small Reds were in a salt brine. Many people evaluated the product but the comments below are a summary of Furman and Hanover who had the most expertise in looking at processed product.

Dark Red Kidney 151011 – Best of the group. Good color and minimal cracks.

Red Hawk – Just a bit behind 151011 for overall characteristics.

9431 - On the low end of the range and considered poor.

Epic – On the low end of the range and considered poor.

All others were considered average.

Light Red Kidney Cal Early – Best of the group.

Inferno – Just a bit behind Cal Early overall.

9363 – Considered the worst of the group.

Ronnie’s Red – Also considered poor.

All others considered average.

White KidneyNothing stood out. All three looked similar and acceptable.

CranberryComment that these are mostly packaged and hard to evaluate as canned. All looked similar canned. Minimal dry seed differences.
