Here’s something to think about over the summer.
Where is your frontline?
Mark Greene wrote a book entitled Fruitfulness on the Frontline. Since then the theme has been developed in a small group course, and also in training sessions.
The gist of it is having our eyes opened to see how God can and does work through us in our daily lives – as the blurb says on the back of the book. Continuing….Whether you’re a student or retired, at the gym or at work, at the school gate or in the supermarket, here is a fresh and original framework for fruitfulness…..among the people you naturally meet in the places you find yourself day by day.
To quote Mark Greene himself: the frontline is a place or time where we meet fairly regularly with people who don’t know Jesus. We all have one, and, rather than imagining other situations where we might feel we can serve God better, we can be encouraged to see how God can use us right where we are now.
The frontline concept is an exciting and stimulating way of looking at our lives. We’ll be looking at it in a bit more depth at our café church on July 8th. Something to think and pray about over the summer? Ken
Jesus said to his Father about his followers:
As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world John 17 v 18

Partnering with Cheltenham Festivals The Gloucester Diocesan Board of Finance (GDBF) has had a relationship with
the Cheltenham Festivals for a number of years. There is a new agreement to
create a family space, ’The Chatterbox’, to run across the Jazz, Literature and
Science festivals over three years. The idea is to create a colourful, informal
and fun environment in the heart of the festival village where children and
families can gather and get creative with ideas and words, with a theme
developed by us. We are looking for volunteers to come and help us manage
the family tent. This would involve helping children and young people to do arts
and crafts, and engaging their parents and guardians in conversation. It will
start at the Literature Festival, 5-14 October and will be open from 10am-4pm.
If you would like to be involved as a volunteer, we would love to hear from you.
Please contact Kerry Pateman for an informal conversation on 01452 835512
or email [email protected].

Monthly Musing: Vacation or Holiday?
If you know me well, you will know that I find language fascinating. What is the history of a word, and
its origin, its relationship to similar words? What do these tell us about ourselves?
So if you are going away in the next few weeks, is it a vacation, or is it a holiday? A vacation is a time
of freedom from duty, but the word is related to vacant and vacancy. These speak of emptiness, a void,
a hole.
Originally, a Holy Day would have been a day to mark a particular aspect of the faith, illuminated by a
familiar Bible story or from the life of a saint. Later, time off work gave an opportunity to attend Church
services and other celebrations. Sometimes there would be festivals, fairs and processions. But a Holy
Day was a day both for fun and for growing in the faith. Today we have plenty of Christian books, CDs
of worship songs, Bible reading notes, so a holiday can still be a time for growing in the faith as well as
fun.
So what is it to be – a vacation or a holiday? Richard Welch

Praying Through Hymns
Thought for the Month
Jesus calls us to each other: found in him are no divides. Race and class and sex and language—such are barriers he derides. Join the hands of friend and stranger; join the hands of age and youth; join the faithful and the doubter in their common search for truth.

This is a prayer exercise based on one from the Emmaus course. Put a dot to represent yourself in the middle of a sheet of paper, and then draw four larger and larger circles around the dot to fill the paper. In the first circle put the names of family and friends you meet very regularly, almost daily. In the next, the people you meet roughly once a week. In the next, those you meet around once a month In the final one, those you meet roughly once a year. Pray for them, circle by circle, maybe one circle for one day, one another. Listen to God as you pray, asking him how to pray for them and for what to pray.
Emmanuel Fellowship
For our June meeting, 30 of us went by steam train from Cheltenham
Racecourse Station to Broadway on the newly opened line. We had
an enjoyable day. Thank you to Joan for organising it. The
Fellowship has recently welcomed new members and we now have
an average of 24 at each meeting. On Monday July 9th, we will
welcome Arthur Ball to talk on Panama. Arthur has been with us
before and is always interesting to listen to.
Sue.
The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway (GWR) is enjoying a huge boost to the number of people visiting and enjoying its steam trains, since its brand new Broadway station opened on Good Friday. This success is attributed to the fact that the railway, now nearly 15 miles long, now runs between the capital of the Cotswolds (Cheltenham) and the jewel of the Cotswolds (Broadway). This railway has been rebuilt over the years almost entirely by volunteers which is an astonishing feat - and today it is run by some 980 volunteers who enjoy welcoming visitors from all over the world. Visiting the GWR makes for a wonderful day out that will take you back to a gentler age when Britain’s steam-powered railways were very much focused on customer service and pride in the job. Everyone is accorded a warm welcome, so not for nothing is it often called the ‘Friendly Line in the Cotswolds’. And of course, it would be very hard to beat the view from the carriage window, with delightful vistas towards the distant Malverns on one side and the Cotswold escarpment, crowned by Cleeve Hill, on the other. The railway runs a comprehensive timetable of services throughout the year with many special events such as ‘Day Out with Thomas’, Vintage car rallies; a classic bus rally or the Cotswold Food & Drink Fayre - to say nothing of the ever-popular Santa Specials. You can find out everything you need to know at www.gwsr.com.
With thanks to Ian of GWR
