About Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon

At Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon, we envision a state where everyone is healthy and thriving, with access to affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food. To bring that vision into reality, our team raises awareness about hunger, connects people to nutrition programs, and advocates for systemic changes.

As leaders in the anti-hunger movement committed to racial justice, we approach hunger differently. We strive to center the leadership of those most impacted by hunger and poverty and to work alongside communities to advocate for systemic changes and better access to food.

While the majority of people facing poverty in Oregon are white, people of color are overrepresented as a percentage of the population in poverty. We acknowledge these disparities are rooted in structural racism and discrimination. Hunger and poverty are outcomes of the exploitation of people, their land, and their labor.

To achieve a hunger-free Oregon, we know we must focus our resources on decreasing hunger among communities with higher rates of food insecurity and poverty, including communities of color, immigrants, people living with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ community.

Together, we can end hunger.

Dear Friends,Learn has long been the first word in our tagline–Learn, Advocate, Connect. Convening listening sessions around the state is an important part of our work.

In 2018, our listening led us to new places:Hunger-Free Schools Campaign–a big dream to ensure every student has enough to eat.Plan to End Hunger–ending hunger requires more than just access to food.College Hunger initiative.SNAP Advisory Board. New partnerships. Revamped events.

Read on to learn about how these new projects continued the strategies that have been proven most effective–connecting people to nutrition programs like SNAP, WIC, and school meals. And how it helped us take bold stands on policy issues.

Learning is not just a first step, it’s a value and an action that we continue to prioritize and return to. This ensures we are centering the voices of those who are directly impacted by hunger and poverty in our decision-making.

Thank you for joining us in this work. From the bottom of my heart, I am grateful for each and every person who contributed in the past year–as a donor, partner, volunteer, and supporter. We truly could not do this work without you.

It may be a cliche, but it’s true–it will take all of us Oregonians coming together to create change, and to ensure every one of our neighbors is thriving.

In partnership,

Annie KirschnerExecutive Director, Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon

LAUNCHING HUNGER-FREE SCHOOLSFormed a cross-sector coalition

Raised $20,000 from individual donors Endorsed 3 bills

ADVANCING JUSTICE STATEWIDE For the first time, Hunger-Free Oregon took clear and bold stances on ballot measures, supporting investments in affordable housing, and opposing measures that were shamefully anti-immigrant or strived to expand corporate tax loopholes. We advocated during the Oregon short legislative session on intersectional issues to reduce hunger. We continue to work hard to fight for changes in Salem that bring us closer to a hunger-free Oregon, including funding child care and paid family leave.

BUILDING A SNAP SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR COLLEGE STUDENTSCollege students continue to have higher rates of hunger, especially at community colleges and for non-traditional students.

150 people attended a college hunger Listening Session2 state bills introduced to address college hunger

1 state department (Human Services) has implemented changes to make SNAP more accessible to college students

Page 6: 2018€¦ · In 2018, our listening led us to new places: Hunger-Free Schools Campaign–a big dream to ensure every student has enough to eat. Plan to End Hunger–ending hunger

GOAL 3: STRENGTHEN ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITYIn 2018, we worked to diversify our revenue streams, with a focus on increasing income from events and individual donors. This unrestricted income is crucial to funding our advocacy and civic engagement work to address root causes of hunger in Oregon. We also gave out more than $55,000 in grants to communities around the state to improve access to school breakfast and school meals.

2016-2018 STRATEGIC PLAN PURSUE EQUITY. BUILD THE ANTI-HUNGER MOVEMENT. STRENGTHEN ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY. The 2016-2018 strategic plan laid out some audacious goals for Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon. In the past two years, we have made big changes, and small changes, working to accomplish our goals. Below are a few highlights from our plan. We invite you to visit our website to see the full review. And stay tuned for our next strategic plan, in the Summer of 2019.

https://oregonhunger.org/strategic-plan-annual-report/

Ensure people directly impacted are included in planning and decision-makingEngaged more than 1,000 people in key activities, leading to founding SNAP Advisory Board and new campaigns. More work needed to ensure representation in decision-making bodies.

Develop strong anti-hunger issue campaignsLed legislative work on EITC, WIC, and state nutrition funding; hosted three lobby days; grassroots leaders attended national conference in DC.

Research inequity in food insecurity and recommend changesProduced several reports and issue briefs, including ones focusing on immigration and college hunger. Led to launching new projects to enact changes based on recommendations.

Target support for federal nutrition programs to areas with least accessFocused on seniors, college students, immigrants, adults without dependent children (ABAWDs). Will continue to deepen this work, especially in school and summer meals.
