In the Know

New livestock requirement for 2018: To exhibit at the county and state fair, 4-H members showing beef cattle, dairy cat-tle, dairy goats, meat goats, poultry, rabbits, sheep and swine, must be certified through the Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA).

The purpose of this program: Youth will be more prepared to be ambassadors for animal agriculture in their role as youth livestock exhibitors; Animals from youth livestock programs are treated with the utmost care; 4-H members are contrib-uting to a safe, wholesome food supply. 4-H’ers must recertify each year.

Hamilton County and surrounding counties will offer in-person trainings ($3) or via online modules ($12). For more infor-mation about the program and/or to complete your online training go to http://yqca.org. 4-H’ers may count this certifica-tion as one of their livestock project manual activities in each animal species they are exhibiting. If 4-H’er is currently certified in youth pork quality assurance, then that certification will cover all animal species YQCA certification until it ex-pires.

Hamilton County in person trainings will be May 1, May 23, and June 20 from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the Hamilton Coun-ty 4-H Fairgrounds.

JUNIOR LEADERS MEETING

All 4-H’ers grades 7-12 are invited to attend the Junior Leaders! The Junior Leader project is designed to give older 4-H members (7th– 12th grade) the opportunity to develop their communication and leadership skills. Junior Leaders provide guidance to younger 4-H members, assist with local and county 4-H activities, complete community service projects, meet new friends, and have FUN! The next meeting will be Wednesday, February 7 at 7 p.m.– 8:30 p.m. touring the Hamilton County Jail.

We are searching for Hamilton County 4-H Makerspace teen leaders and volunteers.

Have you heard of the makerspace movement? Hamilton County 4-H recently received a Duke Energy grant for a county Makerspace Kit. This kit includes a 3-D printer, Makey makeys, Little birs, kiva planks, strawbees, and more to help youth explore STEM. We are looking for both youth and adult volunteers to help us create Makerspace programs for youth. There is a state training coming soon to teach us how to use this kit. If you are interested in helping us with our Makerspace programs, please contact Kathleen Bohde at [email protected].
