MANDI SELLERSCEO, Indigenous Community for Leadership & Development

In her 10 years of supporting First Nations communities in building their individual, Band office and leadership capacities, Mandi Sellers has experienced the challenges and triumphs of communities working through building internal business capacity that reflects their community values and strengths. Mandi believes community is at the heart of any successful business, and there is tight integration between the Community, its members and businesses each supporting the other.

When communities have stewardship of their lands and their people, human capabilities can grow to support their businesses through employment, career opportunities and youth engagement in education.

Communities become energized and grow their capacity

through contributions to infrastructure development such as roads, water and waste treatment, and agricultural development to sustain a healthy,

vibrant and engaged community.

Mandi Sellers is the CEO of the Indigenous Community for Leadership and Development, a joint venture between Com-Tech and Naut 'sa mawt Tribal Council. She will deconstruct a project where her team supported the development of numerous businesses within a rural community in an effort to

ignite community passion, boost economy and provide needed services to community members. She will review the success's, challenges and outcomes of this highly complicated initiative.

2:20 - 3:00PM Careers in the Trades for Indigenous Peoples (at the Lester Centre Theatre)

CRYSTAL BOUCHARDApprenticeship Advisor, ITA

Michael Cameron is the Director of Indigenous Initiatives. A Metis from Manitoba, Michael possesses

extensive college leadership and management experience, most recently in the role of Dean, Students, Indigenous & Community Development at Assiniboine Community College (ACC). While at ACC,

he led the development of an Indigenization Strategy for the college in support of implementing the United

Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Calls to Action of the Truth and

Reconciliation Commission.

Michael's leadership portfolio extends across three provinces, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. His

previous roles range from Program Manager of Continuing Studies for Industry, Trades and

Transportation at Red River College to Director of

Programs and Business Development at Parkland College. Michael believes in establishing strong partnerships as a key to removing barriers that lead to effective training models, including

community based training with Indigenous communities. Michael has lead successful

community based programs and has also been involved in program development to help

apprentices achieve their Red Seal Endorsement.

A former Band Administrator for the Lac La Croix First Nation in Northwestern Ontario, Michael is

now focused on helping build Indigenous communities through trades training and education.

Michael is currently completing a Masters in

Integrated Studies from Athabasca University.

MICHAEL CAMERONDirector of Indigenous Initiatives

In British Columbia, we have an incredible opportunity on the horizon for Indigenous peoples. Certified tradespeople are in high demand, and the provincial government and the Industry Training Authority (ITA) have made it a top priority to continually develop, enhance and promote initiatives aimed at supporting the entry of Indigenous peoples into these in-demand trades careers across the province.

This presentation will outline the details of ITA’s Indigenous Peoples in Trades Training initiative, a program that provides this equity-seeking group with support and access to opportunities in apprenticeships and careers in the trades. Other resources that are available to Indigenous peoples to help them get involved in the trades will also be highlighted. Lastly, the presentation will demonstrate examples of innovative initiatives underway across BC that are improving Indigenous people’s access to and participation in skilled trades training.

Indigenous peoples and communities across BC are encouraged to consider and promote the trades as a viable career option with enormous possibility. There are many supports available to Indigenous peoples who want to pursue a career in the skilled trades and lots of different ways to make it a reality—and ITA is here to help.

Come Experience a 1-Hour LIVE DIFFERENT Motivational Presentation! – NABOC delegates, Charles Hays Secondary School and Prince Rupert Middle are coming together for an inspiring hour of storytelling, music and videos. Live Different’s Indigenous team will be presenting. After speaking with many community leaders and educators in First Nations across Canada, we began looking at how Live Different, as one of Canada’s major youth development organizations, could provide more focused services for Indigenous youth and the challenges they face (eg. hopelessness, suicide, drug abuse, lack of positive role models, etc.). So, at the beginning of 2017, Live Different launched a new program for Indigenous youth and have supported dozens of communities across Canada with effective presentations, sharing circles, workshops, and more. Led by young Indigenous role models, this 1 and 2 day programming, using a strengths-based/positive youth development approach, has already garnered positive and exciting results within our partnering communities.

Presentation times @ Lester Centre of the Arts:1. 12:20 - 1:40PM - Charles Hays Secondary School2. 1:45 - 3:00PM - Prince Rupert Middle School

NABOC delegates have the option to attend either presentation.
