PRESS RELEASE 2018 National Youth Choir Apprentice Conductor FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE- December 8, 2017 (Toronto, ON) Hailing from Montreal, QC, the young conductor GABRIELLE GAUDREAULT has been chosen for the prestigious position of Apprentice Conductor for Canada’s finest youth choir, the National Youth Choir of Canada (NYC). This Conducting Apprenticeship offered by Choral Canada includes a $4000 prize awarded to the Apprentice from the Sir Ernest MacMillan Memorial Foundation. The award is in recognition of Sir Ernest MacMillan’s celebrated career as a conductor, in particular his many years with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir (1942-1957) and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (1931-56). The Foundation will also award a prize of $4,000 to the chosen apprentice conductor in 2020. About the program – Initiated in 1998, the program offers a young conductor the opportunity to work with the NYC and learn from one of Canada’s foremost choral conductors. The apprentice will spend two weeks on tour with the choir studying with the leading guest conductor, observing rehearsals, discussing choral techniques, and have conducting opportunities in performance with the NYC. To be eligible, applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, no older than 35 years of age, and demonstrate a keen desire to learn more about choral conducting at an advanced level. This tuition free program is made possible through the generous support of The Sir Ernest MacMillan Memorial Foundation. 2018 edition – The 2018 NYC program and tour will be hosted in Newfoundland, June 16 to July 3, 2018 under the direction of guest choral conductor Jeff Joudrey. Maestro Joudrey directs the Halifax Camerata Singers in Halifax, NS. BeforepursuinghergraduatestudiesatIU,Ms.GaudreaultreceivedaBachelor’sdegreeinmusicfromMcGillUniversity.Duringthistime,shewasdirectorofTheCarousellerscommunitychoirfor5years,aswellasassistantdirectoroftheSouthShoreChildren’sChoirandSt-Augustine’sParishchoir.Ms.Gaudreaultalsosanginseveralsemi-professionalchoirs,includingtheSt-LawrenceChoir,EnsembleBellechose,andtheQuebecYouthChoir,whereshewasalsoanapprenticeconductor.

Ms.GaudreaulthasalsostudiedorchestralconductingwithAlexisHauserandchoralconductingwithPatriciaAbbottatMcGillUniversity,aswellasparticipatedinsummerworkshopsandmasterclassesinEurope,CanadaandtheUnitedStates,underthetutelageofSimonCarrington,CaronDaley,JosephFlummerfelt,SimonHalsey,AndrewMegill,HelmuthRilling,JohnWilliamTrotterandWilliamWeinert.

Ms.Gaudreaultisanaccomplishedpianistandaccompanist,havingplayedfortheSt-LambertChoralSociety,theMcGillUniversityChorusandMontrealOpera’sproductionofPorgyandBess.ShehasstudiedcollaborativepianowithJeanMarchandandJuliaGavrilovaatMcGill,andwithOlivierGodinattheOrfordMusicAcademy.Shehasworkedinchamberensemblesettings,andfrequentlycollaborateswithsingersandinstrumentalistsforrecitals,competitionsandauditions.
