Hackers HIPAA and Hype: Understanding Data Safety and Patient Confidentiality

Tuesday May 2, 2017 9:00a.m.-10:30 a.m.

As professionals, we have a moral and a legal obligation to protect patient confidentiality. Data security is important not only because it is the right thing to do but also because people will refuse to use electronic data exchange if they do not believe it is safe. Every day we hear news of another major data breach. EDI will cease to function if people are afraid to use it. HIPAA compliance consists largely of having the right forms and signatures. On the other hand, there are important real world measures dentists should be taking beyond the paperwork that can make an actual difference in patient data security. The EDI community has an opportunity to create partnerships and educational programs that will help dentists keep patient data secure, improve the security of all the EDI stakeholders and assure the public that their highly sensitive personal data is secure. This is an entertaining, must see presentation from Dr. Larry Emmott, the nation’s leading high tech dentist. Presenter:

CAQH CORE Dental Certification-CAQH CORE Session Title: Voluntary CORE Certification: The Industry is Moving Forward! Wednesday May 3, 2017 9:30a.m.- 10:30 a.m. The dental industry has a critical need to electronically share large quantities of data quickly and accurately and so requires technical standards and common business practices to simplify this data sharing among dental plans, providers and vendors. Not only does CAQH CORE develop operating rules, it also offers a voluntary certification program so organizations can demonstrate they have adopted and are adhering to those rules. Presenter:

Workgroup 2 - Remittance / CARCS & RARCS Wednesday May 3, 2017 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Many provider groups have issues automatically posting ERA data because the HIPAA codes are not detailed enough to allow processing without asking payers for more detail. This session will focus on the review of the most commonly used codes Claim Adjustment Reason Codes (CARCs) and Remittance Advice Reason Codes (RARCs) combinations used. The participants will determine if the codes are used appropriately by payers during ERA generation and, if used correctly, are more detailed codes needed to help the provider’s post with more accuracy. Additional time will be available for participants to discuss other ERA related topics. Facilitator:

Thomas Mort, Director of Product Integration at EDI-Health Group/ DentalXChange.com focuses on bringing transactions between dental providers and payers into the electronic realm. Tom participates in NDEDIC and the Uniting the Industry Forum trying to "raise the bar" on the quality and usefulness of these transactions.
