  • IntroductionOccupational Employment Statistics (OES) is a program of the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This federal-state cooperative program produces employment and wage estimates for nearly 840 occupations.

Each year, the Employment Security Department’s Workforce Information and Technology Services division compiles occupational employment and wage estimates for Washington state. The data are presented statewide, for metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), metropolitan divisions (MDs) and for nonmetropolitan areas (NMAs). All data are at the cross-industry level. For more information go to https://esd.wa.gov/labormarketinfo/occupations.

Notes on estimatesThese occupational employment and wage estimates are based on the spring 2017 Occupational Employment Statistics survey. Data collected from the survey includes employment counts, occupations and wages from more than 4,200 Washington state employers. Data from the spring 2017 survey are combined with the fall 2014, spring and fall 2015 and spring and fall 2016 survey panels to create a sample size of more than 29,360 employers. Wage estimates are updated to a March 2018 level using Employment Cost Index (ECI) factors. Employment estimates are benchmarked to an average of November 2016 and May 2017 employment.

The estimates in this publication are based on the 2010 Office of Management and Budget (OMB) area definitions, the 2017 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes at the four-digit level and the full 2010 Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code manual. The BLS integrated some 2018 aggregated SOC codes with the May 2017 estimates, which combined two or more 2010 SOC codes in some occupational groups. Please go to the BLS website at https://www.bls.gov/soc/2018 for more information. Occupation and wage estimates are not provided for farms, the self-employed, owner/partners in unincorporated firms, the military, household workers or unpaid family workers. Estimates for some occupations or wage levels may be suppressed because they do not meet BLS publication standards or due to small sample size. These include occupations with an estimated employment of fewer than 10 people. Blanks in the data columns indicate suppressed data.

Estimation changesThe May 2017 percentile wages can be estimated up to $99.99 per hour or $207,980 per year. All of the microdata in the estimates were collected under these newer wage intervals. National estimates, state estimates and more information about the program are available online at www.bls.gov/oes.

If you have questions regarding the data, contact the Employment Security Department Labor Market Information Center at 360-507-9621.

  • Definitions25th Percentile – Twenty-five percent of all wage earners earn below the wage rate specified.

50th Percentile – Fifty percent of all wage earners earn below the wage rate specified. The 50th percentile is the median wage.

75th Percentile – Seventy-five percent of all wage earners earn below the wage rate specified.

Annual wage – In instances where hourly rates are reported, the annual wage is calculated by multiplying the hourly rate by 2,080 hours. This is the annual equivalent of working full-time at 40 hours per week.

Average wage – The sum of all reported wage rates divided by the number of rates.

Employment cost index (ECI) – The employment cost index measures changes in wages, salaries and benefits for civilian workers. This includes private industry and state and local government. The ECI is published by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics and can be found at http://stats.bls.gov/ncs/ect/.

Estimated employment – An estimate of the total number of workers employed in a specific occupation.

Metropolitan Division (MD) – A county or group of counties that serve as a distinct employment region within a metropolitan statistical area that has a population of at least 2.5 million people.

Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) – A county or group of counties that are economically related having a principal city or urbanized area with a population of at least 50,000 people. A MSA may include contiguous counties from neighboring states and is also called a metro area.

Nonmetropolitan Area (NMA) – One of four groups of counties in Washington State not included in a metropolitan statistical area. Each county group is considered economically related.

Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) – The SOC system is used to sort and define nearly 840 occupations. The standardized system allows comparable research and reporting by individual states and the federal government. For more information on the SOC system, go to www.bls.gov/soc.
