    ANNUAL REVIEW

  • ORT AMERICA 2018 ANNUAL REPORT | 3

    Dear Friends and Supporters,

A visionary is someone who “thinks about or plans for the future with imagination or wisdom.” At ORT, we understand that a sustainable future is dependent upon equal access to high-quality education and preparation for the world, not just as it exists today, but as it will evolve in years to come. Our mission at ORT is to bridge the gap between aptitude and opportunity by expanding access to high-quality educational opportunities for students from under-resourced communities around the world.

Throughout 2018, we celebrated ORT visionaries like Jacob Oleiski, who opened ORT schools in DP camps and educated nearly 20,000 children in the wake of World War II; and Anna Khodorovskaya, who is creating digital technology programs to ensure ORT students in Moscow are prepared for tomorrow’s jobs.

In the second half of the year, we turned our attention to a new theme, which emerged in our rebranding process: impact through education. We launched ORT’s rebrand in October 2018 to forge stronger, deeper connections with our current donors and supporters, as well as to broaden our reach to new audiences and create a new generation of ORT visionaries who believe in the power of learning. We now support more than 300,000 students in 35 countries, giving them the knowledge and skills to build meaningful careers. Thanks to our partners, supporters, and donors, ORT’s work empowers teachers and students to reach their full potential and transforms them into leaders of the future.

Thank you for being a part of our family of visionaries. Together, we will ensure that children from under-resourced communities around the world receive a high-quality education, driven by Jewish values.

    Sincerely,

    Larry Kadis National President

    Howard Lanznar Chair, Executive Committee

  • Through innovative programs and quality instruction that emphasizes STEM skill-building, critical thinking and Jewish enrichment, ORT’s educational initiatives empower students with the translatable knowledge and transferable skills needed for a 21st-century job market.

This year, visionary donors from our Michigan Region supported a complete renovation of the Kfar Hassidim Youth Village located near Haifa, Israel. Their support led to a transformation that included state of the art labs and the latest technology integrated into classrooms.

When our Next Gen Mission participants visited Kfar Hassidim, our young professionals saw firsthand the impact of the transformation made possible through support from the Michigan region.

In the FSU, ORT is bringing back to life a religious and cultural experience that was lost to many regions for decades. Through the study of Jewish culture, language, history and traditions, ORT’s Jewish curriculum counters assimilation, renews Jewish communal life, and deepens connections to Jewish identity for generations to come.

In the FSU, we’re building “smart classrooms,” preparing students for the hi-tech job market and revitalizing the Jewish community by teaching Jewish history, culture, and Hebrew.

We can choose from web design, 3D-modeling and landscape design. We also study Jewish heritage and history. It was very interesting to find out information about my Jewish roots.

ORT International Seminar for Leading EducatorsThe 2018 ORT International Seminar for Leading Educators was funded by ORT Chicago in honor of Barbara Statland who recently retired as the Region’s Executive Director, following 30 years of service as a donor, president, and staff member.

In 2018, ORT America Chicago Region raised more than $200,000 in support of the World ORT Teachers Fund.

    Investing In Our Teachers

Teacher of the Year ORT-trained educator Ignat Ignatov was named Moscow’s “Teacher of the Year,” beating out 11,000 educators in the region. Under his guidance, his students have created smart lighting systems and designed helicopter prototypes.

World ORT LEAD ProgramAt the 2018 World ORT LEAD Program in London, 20 educators from 14 countries gathered to learn how to develop and implement positive management behaviours, collaborate with and challenge their fellow mid-level managers and influence the overall performance of themselves and those around them through sharing, coaching and mentoring.

Sponsored by Harold Hyam Wingate Charitable Foundation and by Dr. Louanne Smolin and David Eaton, the program urged the group to use creativity, discovery and critical questioning to drive their future careers.

[This program is] an incredible experience. It’s not usual for a group this size to become colleagues and to learn from each other and to go back into your own circumstances and take a piece of everyone back with you. To be able to experience hope has been a blessing for me.

President Rivlin thanks ORT’s supporters for the backing they have given to education in Israel.

    70-for-70Mission

    In 2018, ORT celebrated

    the state of Israel’s 70th

    anniversary by bringing its

    largest-ever group mission,

    called 70-for-70, to see

the impact of ORT’s work in

    Europe and Israel.

Delegates participated in a pre-trip visit to ORT schools in Vilnius, Lithuania and Kiev, Ukraine, where they experienced for themselves the difference ORT is making.

Students led electronics and physics demonstrations for our delegates in Vilnius.

In addition, students learning English and Hebrew in ORT supported schools served as translators in both languages for our ORT delegates.

    12 | ORT AMERICA 2018 ANNUAL REPORT

ORT mission participants develop a special bond, no matter your previous experience, your home town, your occupation or profession. The ability to view travel as an intensely personal journey shared with caring others makes your trip a highlight of your life.

Debra Kanter ORT America National Board Member

Supporting ORT is supporting children all over the world and the children of Israel, strengthening our society and our country in ways that cannot be described.

    Reuven Rivlin President of Israel

The 70-for-70 mission gave delegates an inside view into ORT’s critical work ORT in communities across Israel.

The mission was made up of ORT staff, lay leaders, and supporters, who traveled to several ORT locations throughout Israel.

In Kfar Silver Youth Village, near Ashkelon, they toured a dairy farm and spoke with students who live there, including teenage immigrants to Israel.

In Kiryat Yam, delegates learned how World ORT’s Kadima Mada (Science Journey) network is changing the area through its emphasis on STEM subjects.

Alina Gerlovin Spaulding shared her story of a life transformed by ORT — first through her own experiences with ORT as a child in the former Soviet Union, and then through her adoption of two children who had also been educated by ORT in the FSU.

ORT America honored National Board of Directors Member Shelly Dreifuss with the first-ever ORT America President’s Award in recognition of her 36 years of active service.

Our keynote speaker was Tom Alexander, founder of the startup incubator 1871, who offered a vision of inclusivity as the key building block for creating community.

The school gave me such knowledge that I can work now in any field and do everything. It is very important for me that my daughter learns about her Jewish roots, the traditions, and celebrates all the holidays here with other children.

As a 2004 graduate of ORT’s Mishpahteinu School in Kazan, Elena Slobodyanskaya looks back on her ORT education fondly and remains in touch with both teachers and former classmates. Elena now sends her own daughter to the same school so that she too can benefit from its educational excellence. 38%

matriculation rate increase between 2016 and 2018 for our students at Kfar Silver Youth Village in Israel

I used to be a mediocre student, but in Kfar Silver I turned into an excellent student. I saw that my future is in my own hands. If you want to have a good life with a secure career, you have to study.

Bella made Aliyah from Kazakhstan and is now a student at Kfar Silver Youth Village in Israel.

  • The future of ORT students is brighter, thanks to the foresight of our ORTists. Whether through legacies and planned gifts already actualized, or through commitments from those planning future bequests and gifts, we are grateful so many donors have prioritized our work in their charitable giving.

Planned giving options range from listing gifts in a will or living trust to naming ORT as a beneficiary of a retirement plan’s final value to donating appreciating securities.

Longtime ORTist Howard Berger devised a special plan for our eldest supporters. We now offer an 11.5% charitable gift annuity rate to donors over the age of 90. Donors receive secure, tax-favored payments for life and qualify for an income tax charitable deduction on a portion of the gift. Whatever remains of the gift at the end of your lifetime will be used to fund ORT’s mission around the world, empowering students and teachers for years to come.

Your planned gift assures your legacy and continued support for our mission. For help in planning your gift in a tax-smart way, please contact ORT’s Planned Giving department.
