TIGERBALL I t ’ s a n A t t i t u d e !

Tiger Formula for Winning Football Games

1. Take care of the football - force turnovers.

2. Create explosive plays - don’t give up big plays.

3. Minimize negative plays and penalties.

4. Balanced run/pass offense with ability to run the ball when we want.

5. Physical, fast defense that makes it difficult for opponent to run the ball.

6. Devote quality personnel, practice time, and attention to detail to make a

difference in the game on special teams.

This is

TIGERBALL!

Tough – Mentally and physically Smart and Disciplined – Limit mistakes Fast and Exciting – Hustle and execute

Enthusiastic – Play loose; have fun!

Tiger Offense The Fishers offense strives to be a balanced run/pass offense utilizing multiple personnel groupings to create multiple formations for our opponents to prepare for. This helps us to use numerous players, taking advantage of the skills from a variety of individuals. We have the ability to spread the field with WRs or bring in extra TEs and RBs to play to our strengths and/or the weakness of an opponent. We strive to have a physical, hard-nosed running game, an explosive play-action passing game off those runs, and a ball-control pocket and perimeter-attack passing game that gets the ball to our athletes in space.

Tiger Defense The Tiger 4-3 defense is designed to attack our opponent’s offense with speed and quickness. We stress speed and toughness to play in our defense. Our defense is adaptable to the variety of offenses we see in high school football and, particularly, in our conference. It is a team-oriented, single-gap defense which means that every player must take care of his responsibility first while trusting his teammates to do their job as well. Playing fast together as a single unit with great effort is the emphasis of our defense.

Tiger Special Forces The Fishers special teams units are called Special Forces with each unit being named for one of the Armed Services Special Forces Units. Players who become a part of one of the Special Forces Units must exhibit pride in their job, relentlessness in their effort, and aggressiveness in their execution. Our Special Forces units and mottos are stated below:

Rangers (KO Team) – “Lead the Way” Seals (KO Return Team) – “Complete the Mission” Airborne (Punt Team) – “Protect and Cover” Delta Force (PR Team) – “Search and Destroy” Snipers (PAT/FG Team) – “One Kick, One Score” Commandos (PAT/FG Block) – “Defend with Honor“

Football and Safety

There has never been a better, safer time to be playing football

1. We (trainers, doctors, coaches) know more about diagnosing and

treating concussions than ever before.

2. Doctors and researchers are still learning more about the brain and

CTE. Researchers have now discovered subjects who were non-

football players with no history of concussions yet have developed CTE

(Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy).

3. Equipment continues to evolve and improve.

4. Rules are continually being studied, adapted, created, and changed to

create a safer environment and a safer game. Attitudes and actions

that were once glorified in the game are being changed to make

players more aware of protecting the game, teammates, and

opponents.

5. Fundamental techniques are being coached much differently today

than even 5 years ago.

a. Hawk tackle

b. Near shoulder tackle

c. Profile tackle

d. Tip of the Spear blocking fundamentals

e. B.L.A.S.T blocking fundamentals

6. We are practicing much different than we did just a few years ago.

a. limited contact (post-season, summer, pre-season, in-season rules)

b. 2-a-day rules and limits

c. Choice of drills and teaching progressions

d. learning to teach blocking & tackling fundamentals w/o pads

Playing Football: What every coach and parent should know

Myth: Brain damage is always permanent. A concussion, a typically mild and common type of brain injury, usually results in only temporary disruption of brain functions as long as there is adequate recovery time and no repeated injury. Even after more serious brain injury, research indicates that – especially with the help of therapy – the brain may be capable of developing new connections and “reroute” function through healthy areas. Source: www.brainfacts.org/Diseases-Disorders/Injury/Articles/2011Brain-damage-is-always-permanent

What science says about concussions In the last 5 years, scientists have proven that engaging in brain training can build resilience and achieve brain regeneration after injury. In most cases, an individual will fully recover after a concussion given proper management, therapy and time to heal. Monitoring cognitive and emotional symptoms annually is key to addressing any later-emerging deficits. Having a clear process for handling concussions increases the likelihood of recovery and improvement. Center for Brain Health The University of Texas at Dallas Dr. Sandra Bond Chapman, Founder and Chief Director Dr. Lori Cook, Director of Pediatric Brain Injury Programs www.CenterforBrainHealth.org

Key facts about brain injuries A concussion is a mild injury to the brain; most often the damage is not permanent. Early recognition is crucial to prevent further injury and ensure the best course of treatment. Five to 10 percent of athletes will experience a concussion in any given sport season.* The risk of suffering a concussion exists in most activities. Falls, not sports, are the leading causes of concussions.† Motor-vehicle collisions cause more severe injuries than concussions suffered in football.

Concussion prevention and care have improved significantly thanks to scientific advancements, heightened awareness and more stringent return-to-play guidelines. Participating in football and other team sports provides important emotional and academic benefits that can build a healthy foundation for life.‡ * www.concussiontreatment.com/concussionfacts.html; † www.cdc.gov/traumaticbraininjury/causes.html; ‡ www.iahsaa.org/resource_center/Academic_Assistance/Benefits_Sports.htm

The Science

Of Youth’s Developing Brain

Twelve- to 25-year-olds are the most vulnerable to risk-

taking behaviors. Addictions developed during these

years are far more difficult to break than addictions

developed later in life. For example, 80 percent of adult

smokers become addicted to nicotine by age 18.

From the ages of 12 to 25, the brain is in a rapidly

developing state. The emotional brain and the brain’s

frontal lobes, the source of control and reason, are

immature and often prevent young people from making

wise choices and saying no to risky behaviors, especially

in emotionally charged contexts.

An unbalanced dopamine system leaves adolescents with

a sense of low self-worth regardless of their talent and

achievement. Adolescents then offset this sense through

thrill-seeking behaviors which set up a vicious cycle that

increases dopamine in the brain’s reward system. Once

stimulated, the adolescent is motivated to seek more and

more addictive risk/reward-seeking behaviors.

Playing football and other sports provide

rich and proven opportunities that:

Inspire youth to embrace and optimize their

emerging potential

Prevent and mitigate risks of lifelong addictions

to nicotine, alcohol, and drugs.

Ward off depression by increasing dopamine

through thrills of camaraderie and jointly shared

purpose.

Expose young people to healthy role models

such as coaches and mentors outside the family

circle.

Strengthen a committed connection to

schoolwork and activities.

Reduce addiction to gaming technology.

Provide regular exercise to stay physically and

mentally fit while elevating mood.

Strengthen cooperation, social cognition, and

friendship skills.

Build leadership skills through actions and

empathy.

Maintain better sleep habits at a time of life

when the sleep cycle is disturbed and more

sleep is required.

Moratorium: The IHSAA has set a moratorium on all high school sports activities during the week of

July 4th each year. Families are encouraged to take advantage of this moratorium each

year by scheduling family vacations during this time if possible. Of course, we recognize

that that is not possible for everyone and players will not be punished for going on

vacations at other times. However, during that week players will not have to worry about

missing any workouts, pass skeletons, conditioning, etc. We believe taking a one week

break from all required workouts to be able to spend time with family is a healthy thing.

This year the IHSAA moratorium runs from Su, July 1 to Su, July 8.

We are extending this official moratorium to begin Th, June 28.

There will also be a second moratorium from Tu, July 24 – Su, July 29.

Freshmen will complete all FB responsibilities on F, July 20. (Following AM workout)

FHS Team FB Camp:

- Monday, July 16 – Thursday, July 19

- Freshmen: 4:30 – 7:00 pm (includes walk-thrus, specialties, practice)

- Varsity / JV: 4:30 – 7:45 pm (includes meetings, walk-thrus, specialties, practice)

Camp will end at 7 pm on Thursday (Parent meeting and cookout)

- Cost: No cost for the camp except that players need to purchase their Fishers practice

Jersey and Fishers FB Shorts ($25) which is required attire for each practice.

- Tuesday evening (July 19) following practice we will kick-off our Fishers FB Value

Card Fundraiser. Keith Nunley from Adrenaline will conduct the meeting to

inform players how the fundraiser works, how they can sell the most cards, and

the prizes they can earn. We will expect every player to sell at least 20 cards

which will pay for their entire practice packet and Gridiron Club dues.

. Freshmen meeting: 7:00 – 7:30 pm Varsity / JV meeting: 7:40 – 8:15 pm

- It is very important that all players make every effort to be here for camp all 4 nights.

- Mandatory Parent Meeting to be held on the final night of camp. This will be a

cookout / pitch-in format sponsored by our Gridiron Club. Parents may begin

eating at 6:30 pm followed by players at 7 pm at the conclusion of camp. Coach

Wimmer will conduct the parent meeting at 7:15 pm in the stadium, weather

permitting.

Eligibility and Study Tables: All players going to grades 10-12 must pass 5 classes in the spring semester in order to be

eligible to play football in the fall. If a player does not pass 5 classes, he must enroll in

summer school or online classes to get to 5 passed classes. All incoming freshmen

players are eligible at the beginning of the season. However, in order to stay eligible for

the entire season, players must pass 5 classes at the end of the 9 weeks grading period. Study

tables will be organized in the fall and monitored for students who are in danger of failing.

Players who are required to attend these study tables but fail to attend, will receive extra

conditioning and, if failure to attend continues, suspension. Seniors, Juniors, and Sophomores will

be subject to Study Table procedures at the beginning of the school year based on the spring

semester grades. Freshmen are subject to study table guidelines beginning with the 1st nine-week

midterm grades.

Study tables are held 2 days each week before and after school. We will expect our

players to attend study tables during the morning sessions. Being late for practice by

going to the afternoon study table session instead of the morning session will result in

1st offense – 3 x 350s in assigned time (6 max) after practice (position coach administers)

2nd offense – reduction in playing time in next game.

3rd offense – Suspension from games until mid-term or grading period grades released.

Page 13: 2018 Program Information Guide - Amazon S3 · 2018-04-23 · 2018 Program Information Guide for Players & Parents 2010 5A Indiana State Champions Sectional Champions: 2010, 2012,

Vacations, Jobs, Conflicts: The football staff at FHS recognizes that summer is also a time for family vacations, jobs,

other camps, other sports, etc. We also hope you recognize the importance of attending as many

workout sessions as possible. Here are some basic guidelines that will help you understand what

we expect from you in regards to our program. a. We believe that if you are in town, you should attend the strength training sessions held in the

weight room (3 per week ). We believe that going on a family vacation or attending a sports

camp, church camp, etc. are valid reasons not be at a workout, but jobs or other conflicts

should be scheduled around these workouts.

b. The on-field drills sessions held on M, W, and F have the same expectation

c. We also want our multi-sport players to know that we understand you have obligations with

other sports as well. The football staff encourages our players to participate in other FHS

sports. We do, however, expect players to attend as many football sessions as possible.

Communicate with our staff when a summer baseball game or a summer basketball game or

camp will prevent you from making a workout occasionally. This will not be a problem

providing there is communication and you are making every effort to attend as many football

sessions as possible. We recognize that the multi-sport athlete may miss some sessions due

to obligations with another sport, but we expect athletes and coaches of other sports to

recognize that a multi-sport athlete should also expect to attend some football sessions at the

expense of other sports, especially since the football season will be the athlete’s next season.

2-a-Day Practice Schedules:

- 2-a-day practices will begin on Monday, July 30 for Varsity, JV, and Freshmen players.

Summer Football Camps Philosophy: 1. Important for player development

2. No spring practice in Indiana (vs some other states); Camps become our spring practice.

3. Do not confuse a player development camp with a recruiting camp or evaluation. They are different and

each has its place. And do not confuse a player developmental camp with a camp designed to take

advantage of people who simply want to be associated with a big-time college program in order to think

they are being recruited.

4. We like for our varsity/JV players to attend the Bishop/Dullaghan Team Camp because –

a. it is a developmental camp. Players will get coached and get better.

b. we are able to coach our own schemes, techniques, offensive plays, defensive fronts and

coverages, etc.

c. we cannot possibly duplicate the number of reps each player will get who attends this camp by

staying home.

d. we cannot get the same number of reps against quality competition by staying home.

e. because it is 3 days of football, we can have some meetings (classroom) to improve our teaching

(something we normally are not able to do until 2-a-days). We plan to make use of video during

some of this meeting time to further enhance teaching.

f. players will gain tremendous confidence in themselves, teammates, and our schemes at camp

when they apply what they learn in team scrimmages. They will begin to really understand their

assignments and responsibilities with the framework of our own offense and defense – something

they cannot get by attending another camp.

g. It will improve our TEAM.

* If you want to get recruited, you must develop as a player. Do not fall into the trap of thinking that you

must go to every combine, camp, and evaluation in order to be discovered. The biggest determiner is

game video. If you want to get recruited, you better look good on film. There is nothing wrong with

going to a couple of combines and a college camp. 1-day evaluations are important and can be done

without spending lots of money. But developing your skills as a player, especially within our scheme, is

the best way to develop the confidence, technique, and understanding to improve your game, improve

our team, and improve your chances to make an impression on tape.
