• Studentsmustcompletethefollowingform(s)asrequiredandapprovedbytheteacher/advisorpriortothestartofresearch.ApprovalissubjecttoconfirmationbytheGSDSEFScientificReviewCommittee.(SRC).
• Allrequiredapprovalformsmustbegiventoteacherspriortosubmittingonlinescreeningmaterial.Theseinclude:

• SeniorDivisionTeamProjects:Onceaprojecthasstarted,teammemberscannotbechanged.Thefinalprojectshouldreflecttheworkofbothmembersandeachmembershouldfullyunderstandeveryaspectoftheproject.Eachteammembermustcompleteandsignhis/herowncopyoftheProjectProposal/SignatureForm(GSDSEFform1,2018).OnlyonecopyofotherrequiredGSDSEFforms(2,3,4,or5)isneededforeachteamproject,andcompletedformsarekeptonfilebytheteacher/advisor.
• Projectsthatareacontinuationofapreviousprojectmustinvolvesignificantnewexperimentation.Statethisinthetitle,e.g.,"2ndYearStudy,3rdYearStudy”,etc.Notebooksfrompreviousprojectsshouldbeavailableduringjudging.
• Onetable,76cm(30in.)highoronefloorspace(withouttable)willbeprovidedforeachproject.Outsidemeasurementsforeachprojectarelimitedto76cm(30in.)deep,fronttoback;122cm(48in.)wide,sidetoside;198cm(77in)highfromtablesurfaceOR274cm(108in.)highifafloorspaceisrequested.

1.Creativity
Originalityoftheproblem,uniquenessofapproachandinterpretationofdatashouldbecommensuratewiththestudent’sgradelevel.Ingenioususeofequipmentandmaterialsisconsideredregardlessoftheexpenseoftheitemsinvolved.
2.ScientificThought/EngineeringProjectGoals/ComputerProjectGoals
A.ScientificMethod:Theprojectshowsdepthofstudyandeffortinemployingscientificproceduresinthesolutionofaclearlydefinedproblem(includingbackgroundstudy,organizedprocedures,appropriatesampling,orderlyrecordingandanalysisofdataandtheformulationoflogicalconclusions).
B.EngineeringProjectGoals:The project has a clear objective relevant to the needs of the potential user.Theproductorprocesshasbeentestedandisbothworkableandfeasibleeconomicallyandecologically.
C.ComputerProjectGoals:Theprojecthasaclearobjective,hasbeenthoroughlytestedanddocumentedandisbothpracticalandworkable.
3.Thoroughness
Thestudyiscompletewithinthescopeoftheproblem.Scientificliteraturehasbeensearched,experimentsrepeatedandcarefulrecordskept.
4.SkillsCreditisgivenforspecialskillsneededfortheconstructionoruseofequipmentandformathematical,computational,observational,anddesignskills.
5.ClarityThepurpose,proceduresandconclusionsareclearlyexplainedorallyandthroughthedisplay.ThePROJECTNOTEBOOKiswellorganized,neatandaccurate.Sourcesofideas,data,andassistanceareclearlyidentified.

SAFETYPRECAUTIONSNOHAZARDOUSmaterialmaybedisplayedwithyourproject.EXAMPLESOFITEMSNOTallowedinadisplay:
• live disease-causing organisms that are pathogenic to humans or other vertebrates• microbialculturesandfungi,liveordead,includingunknownspecimensfood,eitherhumanor
animal• syringes,pipettesandsimilarsharpdevicesanyflames,openorconcealedpotentiallyhazardous• substances[includingchemicals]anddeviceshighlycombustiblesolids,fluidsorgases.Inert
substitutesmustbeusedifsuchmaterialsarerequiredfordisplay.NOTE:RocketsmustNOTcontainfuel!
• tanks that have contained combustible gases, including butane and propane,unlesstheyareverifiedtohavebeenpurgedwithcarbondioxide
• liquids(includingwater),allposeathreattothefloorfinishattheBPAC• sublimatingsolidsincludingdryice• livingorpreservedorganisms,likeanimalorplanttissues,by-products,etc.• liveorpreservedvertebrateorinvertebrateanimalsorparts(includingembryos,microbial
culturesorfungi,whetherknowntobedisease-causingornot)maybeexhibitedattheFair.Sealedinsectcollectionswillbepermittedondisplay.
• humanparts,otherthanteethcertifiedHIVfree,hair(withoutroots),nailsandhistologicalsections(properlyacquired)maybeexhibitedattheFair.Anyapprovedhumanpartsondisplaymustbesealedinanairtightcontainer.
• photographsorothervisualpresentationsdepictingvertebrateanimalsinotherthannormalconditionsmaybedisplayedonthestudent'sexhibit.
Devicesproducingtemperaturesinexcessof100°C(212degreesF)mustbeadequatelyinsulated.
ALSO,thefollowingELECTRICALsafetyissuesmustbeobserved:
• Wiringmustbeproperlyinsulatedandfastened.• Wiring,switchesandmetalpartsofhighvoltagecircuitsmustbelocatedoutofthereachof
observersandmustincludeanadequateoverloadsafetydevice.• Highvoltageequipmentmustbeshieldedwithagroundedmetalboxorcagetoprevent
accidentalcontact,andMUSThavepriorpermissiontobedemonstratedduringjudging.• Approvedconnectingcordsofaproperload-carryingcapacitymustbeusedfor110-volt
operationoflights,motors,transformers,andotherequipment.• Standardswitchesmustbeusedfor110-voltcircuits.Openknifeswitchesorbell-ringingpush
buttonsarenotacceptableforcircuitsexceeding12volts.• Batterieswithopentopcells(wetcellbatteries)areNOTpermitted.• Electricalconnectionsin110-voltcircuitsmustbesolderedorfixedunderapprovedconnectors
andhaveconnectingwiresproperlyinsulated.• Electricalcircuitsfor110-voltACmusthaveanUnderwritersLaboratoriesapprovedcord(of
properloadcarryingcapacity)atleast2meterslongandequippedwithastandard3pronggroundedplug.

• Devices(vacuumtubes,lasers,)thatgeneratedangerousraysmustbeproperlyshielded.• OnlyclassIandclassII(NOTclassIIIorIV)LasersmayoperatedattheFair.
Theselasersmust: a.haveaprotectivehousingorbarricadepreventinghumanaccesstothebeamduring operation; b.bedisconnectedfromthepowersourcewhennotbeingoperated; c.beoperatedonlyinthepresenceoftheexhibitorandotherwiseinoperablewhen displayed,andshouldbeaccompaniedbyasignreading:

SAFETYREMINDERS:• AnyControlledSubstances (drugs,chemicals,anesthetics,narcotics,etc., theuseofwhichis

REGULATIONSFOREXPERIMENTSWITHANIMALScontinued
CompliancewiththefollowingISEFREGULATIONSisalsorequired.HOWEVER,theprovisionsoftheCaliforniaEducationCodeMUSTbefollowedwheneverconflictingregulationsoccur.
INTELINTERNATIONALSCIENCEANDENGINEERINGFAIR(INTELISEF)REGULATIONS:
1. TheuseofProtista,otherinvertebratesortissue/cellculturesareencouragedformostresearchinvolvinganimals.Theirwidevarietyandfeasibilityofusinglargernumbersthanisusuallypossiblewithlivevertebratesmakesthemespeciallysuitable.
2. Thebasicaimsofexperimentsinvolvinganimalsaretoachieveanunderstandingoflifeprocessesandtofurtherknowledge.Theydonotincludethedevelopmentofneworrefinementofexistingsurgicaltechniquesorexperimentsintoxicologicalstudies.Experimentsinvolvinganimalsliveorpreserved,vertebrateorinvertebrate,(excludinghomosapiens),vertebrateembryosandfetusesandchickenembryospriortothreedays(72hours)ofhatching,musthaveclearlydefinedobjectivesrequiringtheuseofanimalstodemonstrateabiologicalprincipaloranswerscientificpropositions.SuchexperimentsMUSTbeconductedwitharespectforlifeandanappreciationofhumanconsiderations.
AnimalDefined:TheISEFRulesdefineananimalasanylive,nonhumanvertebrate,mammalianembryoorfetus,tadpoles,reptileorbirdeggswithinthreedays(72hours)ofhatching,andallothernonhumanvertebrates(includingfish)athatchingorbirth.
3. Toprovideforhumanetreatmentofanimals,ananimalcaresupervisorknowledgeableinthepropercareandhandlingofexperimentalanimals(maybeteacherorparent)MUSTassumeprimaryresponsibilityfortheconditionsunderwhichtheanimalsaremaintained.Iftheschoolfacultyincludesnoonewithadequatetraininginthisarea,theservicesofaqualifiedconsultantMUSTbeobtained.
4. AllliveorpreservedanimalsoranimalpartsMUSTbelawfullyacquiredfromanapprovedsourceandtheircareanduseMUSTbeincompliancewithlocal,stateandfederallaws.NOTE:Petstoreanimalsareinappropriateforexperimentationastheirgeneticbackground,ageandpastnutritionalstatusaredifficulttoobtain.
5. TheCOMFORToftheanimalsshallbeaprimeconcern.Noresearchusinglivevertebrateanimalsshallbeattemptedunlesstheanimalsareobtainedfromareliablesourceandthefollowingconditionscanbeassured:appropriate,comfortablequarters;adequatefoodandwater;humanetreatmentandgentlehandling.Caremustbeprovidedatalltimes,includingweekendsandvacationperiods.

CompliancewiththefollowingGSDSEFREGULATIONSisalsorequired.HOWEVER,theprovisionsoftheCaliforniaEducationCodeMUSTbefollowedwheneverconflictingregulationsoccur.
GSDSEFREGULATIONS:
1. Studentresearchinvolvinganimals/animalpartsMUSTcomplywiththerequirementsoftheCaliforniaEducationCode,theGSDSEFandtheIntelInternationalScienceandEngineeringFair(IntelISEF)–seelastpageGSDSEFform2,2018.Incaseofconflict,theprovisionsoftheCaliforniaEducationCodetakeprecedence.
2. 3. Thebiomedicalscientistmustprovidecontinuingsupervisiontoassurecompliancewiththeprotocol.Abiomedicalscientistisdefinedasonewhopossessesanearneddoctoraldegreeinscienceormedicineandwhohascurrentworkingknowledgeofthetechniquestobeusedinresearchunderconsideration.
4. Majordeviationsfromtheapprovedprotocolmaybeimplementedonlywithwrittenapprovalofthebiomedicalscientist.
5. Thebiomedicalscientistmustbeinthesamelocalityasthestudentforthedurationofheexperimentalworkexceptforshorttrips.Thismeansthataprojectstartedinonecitymaynotbecontinuedinanotherunlessadesignatedadultsupervisor(anindividualwhohasbeenproperlytrainedinthetechniquesandprocedurestobeusedintheinvestigation),approvedbythebiomedicalscientistpriortothecontinuationiftheexperimentalwork,agreestosupervisetheproject.

1. Allculturesinpetridishesmustbesealedwithtwotapesonoppositesidesimmediatelyafter

Allbacteria,protozoaandfungi(includingmolds)aretobehandledasthoughpathogenic.KnownpathogenicbacteriaareNOTtobecultured.Pureculturesofnonpathogenicmicroorganismsshouldbeusedinexperiments.Whensoilorwater isusedasasourceofbacteria(orfungi),itisimportanttocollectsamplesunlikelytobecontaminatedbyhumanpathogens. Forexample,watershouldbecollectedfromlakes, estuaries or beaches free of sewage or animal-wastepollution and neverfromareassuspected tobeorpostedaspolluted. Collectionofsoilsamplesinoraroundoldbuildingsites,animalburrowsand/orareasinwhichValleyFeverisendemicshouldbeavoided.
3. Bacterialstudiesmustbeconductedinaproperlyequippedlaboratoryunderqualified supervision.Petridishesmaybe inoculatedathomebutmustbe IMMEDIATELYSEALEDandtakentothelab.
4. Petridishesthatareinoculatedwithmaterialscontainingunknownmicroorganisms(i.e.,thematerialisnotapurenon-pathogenicculture)mustnotcontainbloodagarorBHI,butrathernutrientortrypticasesoyagar.
5. Manipulationofmoldsmusttakeplaceinafumehoodoropen-airareatopreventcontaminationof livingareaswith fungalspores. Ifanyone in theareahasadepressedordamagedimmunesystemorany allergies, experimentswithmoldsmustbeconducted ina laboratory. Containersmustbesealedatalltimesduringobservationsanddisposedofaspossiblepathogens.
6. Approvedeye-protectivedevicesshouldbeusedbyallpersonsperformingscienceactivitiesinvolvinghazardstotheeyes.Allpersonsincloseproximitymustbesimilarlyequipped.Laboratoryapronsandrubberorplasticglovesshouldbeavailableandshouldbewornwheneverhazardsexistthatcoulddamageclothing,injuresomeoneorirritateskin.
7. Eyesand skinmustnotbeexposed toultraviolet lightexperimentallyor accidentallyaspartofaproject.

8. Theuseofespeciallyhazardouschemicalsshouldbeavoidedandsubstitutesused.If theuseof
certainhazardouschemicals (e.g.,gelpreparationsofAcrylamide,aneurotoxin,orEthidiumBromide,mutagen)cannotbeavoided,extraprecautionsmustbeexercisedandanyprocedureswhichinvolveexposuretothesehazardsmustbeperformedbythesupervisor.Consult (MSDS)MaterialSafetyDataSheets(availablefromeachchemicalsupplier)priortouseofanyhazardouschemicals.

REGULATIONSFORPROJECTSINVOLVINGVERTEBRATETISSUESORPARTS
1. Theprocedurestobefollowedforprojectswithvertebratetissue,bodyparts,orbodybyproducts
willensurethatneitherthemethodsnorthematerialsusedwillconstituteanyknowndangertopersonsortheenvironment.
2. Vertebrateanimaltissueusedmustbefrom(1)acontinuallymaintainedtissuecultureor(2)fromanimalsalreadybeingusedinongoinginstitutionalresearch.NOTE:inthecaseof(2),thestudentmustindicateintheproceduressectionoftheirProjectNotebookthatmaterialswereby-productsfromanotheron-goingprocedureandanimalswereNOTsacrificed(i.e.euthanized)forthestudent’sproject.
3. Anyhumantissue,bodyfluids,bloodandbloodproductsmustbeincompliancewiththebloodbornpathogensexposurecontrolplanoftheinstitutionatwhichtheresearch isbeingdone,andmustbe tested and certified freeofhumanimmunodeficiencyvirus(HIV)aswellashepatitisBandCantibodiesandantigens.Adesignatedsupervisormustsupervisethestudentatalltimesduringpreparation,experimentationandcleanup.Thesupervisorortheirinstitutionwillprovidethematerialsused,andthestudentwillNOTbeinvolvedinthedirectacquisitionoftissuesamples. Thesupervisor will assume responsibility for the proper disposal of anychemicalsortissuesusedinthestudent’sproject.

2. If human teeth are used the studentmust, before receiving them, obtain (in addition to the completed
formsGSDSEFform1, 2018 and GSDSEFform3, 2018) a signed statement, on organizational letterhead,that any human teeth provided are certifiedfreeofbloodandbloodproductsorspecifyingapprovedproceduresthathavebeenfollowedtoassurenohazardfromHIVorHepatitisBorCremains.
3 . Tissues from vertebrate animals must be acquired from institutional researchersandbefromeithera
continuouslymaintainedtissuecellculturelineorfromanimals already being used in an on-goinginstitutional research project. In eithercase,aclearstatementincludingthephrase:
a. “fromacontinuouslymaintainedtissue(orcell)culturefrom_______lab,”
or,
b. “tissuewasobtainedasaby-productofongoingresearchinalaboratoryat_______.”
