Welcome to FPD’s Center for Discovery! The Center for Discovery is full of exciting opportunities for students and adults to learn new hobbies, improve their skills or expand their knowledge. Our goal is to present original classes and

camps that are taught in the Christ-centered environment of First Presbyterian Day School. All classes are open to the community and are unique ways to learn beyond the classroom.

EV3 RoboticsFor boys and girls in grades 1 - 6

Experience cutting-edge technology with the introduction of LEGO EV3 Robotics. Students will incorporate the newest generation of motors, sensors, and software to program their commands. Our endless lists of builds is sure to provide the complete fundamental components of robotics. Engineering AdventuresFor boys and girls in grades K - 5

So you want to be an engineer or architect? Well, what are you waiting for? This is your chance! Join us as we put our engineering skills to the test to build bridges, buildings, vehicles, and more. We’ll learn about different types of careers for you to explore. Do you like to design cities? You might want to become an urban architect one day. Do you want to build bridges? Then civil engineering is the job for you! Want to design the next cool electric car? Then you may be destined to become an automotive or mechanical engineer. Come experience engineering adventures with us.

The Carpenter ShopFor boys and girls in grades K - 2

Join us at the Carpenter Shop where you will create and build with a tap and plop. Learn how to measure, use a hammer and nails, and how to put together a final creation. Builders will create small projects that they can take home. The Carpenter Shop reinforces math skills and increases hand-and-eye coordination in a fun interactive environment.

Chess for KidsFor boys and girls in grades 2 - 6

Chess is an old game that can be learned by young children. Waging a war on an 8x8 grid can be fun and carries many benefits for learning and development. Chess players learn to use high-order thinking skills, analyze actions and consequences, and visualize future problems. Students gain insight into the nature of competition and strengthen patience, perseverance and grit. Students in the course will learn basic rules and strategies for playing and completing chess games.

Life Science DiscoveryFor boys and girls in grades K - 5

Explore the fascinating science of living things and build engaging models of creatures from caterpillars to dinosaurs. During this unit, students will explore topics such as how the human body stays cool and the amazing life cycle of a butterfly. If you love creatures, this is the class for you.

for children in 3K, PreK, & Kindergarten

Come enjoy story time at the FPD library! FPD’s Elementary Librarian, Mrs. Darnell, will read one of her favorite books followed by a science, art, music, or craft project. There is no cost to attend and each day is different! Join us for the fun and bring a friend!

Each event is from 9:30 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. in the FPD Library.

January 25 - New Year. New Ideas. Put on your thinking caps as we explore books and scientific experiments.

February 22 - Mi Libro Favorito. We combine our love for books with a little Spanish fun.

April 26 - Get Set for Summer! Learn the best ways to keep your love for reading strong during the summer and into the next school year!

PRESCHOOL & ELEMENTARY

SAT Practice CourseFor students in grades 10 or 11

Join us for this SAT preparation course led by FPD Director of College Counseling, Brad Thompson, as well as members of the FPD faculty. Students will take an SAT and go over each section with a teacher. They will also cover how to register, what tests look like, and other helpful information for SAT test takers.

Babysitting Training Course presented by the American Red CrossFor girls in grades 6 - 9

The purpose of this course is to provide youth with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely give care for children and infants. The participants will learn basic first aid, learn safe and appropriate skills for taking care of babies. The participants will also learn how to pick-up and hold an infant or toddler, bottle-feed an infant, spoon-feed an infant, change a diaper, and help a conscious infant or child who is choking. All participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the class. Students must register by March 1. To host the class, the American Red Cross requires a minimum attendance.

Building Leadership & Character For students in grades 6 - 8

FPD Middle School Bible Teacher James Moore helps students understand what it means to be a leader, both at school and at home. Students will work on positive character traits, teambuilding, and cooperation. Sessions will include various topics and activities such as teambuilding exercises, everyday dialogues, and Bible study. This is a great program for any middle-schooler who wants to know more about what it takes to be a successful, godly leader.

Baby Sitting Course

CREATE

Elementary Cross CountryFor boys and girls in grades 3 - 5

Do you love to run? Do you want to learn the proper technique and skills to become a better runner? Come and get some exercise and learn about running. Join us each week as we run on the Peake Cross Country Trail. We will train and end our season with an elementary cross country meet. Bring your running shoes, a water bottle, and we will have a great time. We will conclude our session with a race on March 19.

Garden-to-Table CookiesFor boys and girls in grades 2 - 5

Pull out your garden gloves and get ready to taste the difference of “fresh from the garden!” Participants will pick herbs from FPD’s educational gardens and take them straight to the kitchen to learn how to make some culinary masterpieces. At the end of the four sessions students will plant a small herb pot to take home for home use.

April 16: Cooking with rosemary - Make rosemary and salted dark chocolate cookies baked in the oven.

April 19: Cooking with basil - Make basil cornmeal cookies baked in the oven with strawberry fig jam.

April 23: Cooking with mint - Make mint chocolate cookies baked in the oven.

Music Lessons for Children & AdultsOpen to all ages

FPD offers a wide variety of music lessons with talented teachers here on our campus. Lessons are available in guitar, drums, fiddle, piano, trombone, and voice.

Princess BalletFor girls in grades 3K - K

An introduction to the art of ballet through creative movement and music appreciation for students in 3K-K. Children are introduced to movements that will allow them to use their bodies in order to say something. Time will be spent developing individual expression and imagination. Each student will need a black or light pink modest leotard with ballet tights and shoes. A class demonstration will be given on April 30.

Kickball League

The purpose of the kickball league is to provide a social environment for adults who enjoy the competitiveness of sports in a Christian atmosphere. Teams will compete in one or two games per week with a tournament at the end of the 6th week.

Meredith Willson’s six-time, Tony Award-winning musical comedy has been entertaining audiences since 1957 and is a family-friendly story to be shared with every generation.

Tickets will be available online in February.

Admission: Admissions is offered to any student or adult who meets the eligibility requirements of the camp or activity. First Presbyterian Day School welcomes any student or adult regardless of race, color, religion, or ethnic origin who meets the standard of the activity. First Presbyterian Day School does teach and offer all classes from a Christian world view.

Registration: Registration is required for any class offering. Session are filled on a first-come first serve basis. Please enroll early. Any registrations that have been received after a class has reached capacity will be returned with a full refund. Mail the completed application and payment in full for each selected class and seminar to First Presbyterian Day School, Center for Discovery, 5671 Calvin Drive, Macon, GA 31210. Online registration is available on our website at www.fpdmacon.org.

Payment and Fees: Class fees are due in full at the time of registration. All fees include all activities and supplies unless otherwise noted. Payments may be made by check or FPD students may apply the payment to their student account. FPD accounts will be billed upon registration, not during the month of the class.

Class Minimum Policy: Some classes have participant minimums set by the instructor. If the minimum is not reached three business days prior to the beginning of the class, the class will be cancelled. Participants will be notified by email and payments refunded.

Refund Policy: A full refund is offered to the participant if the class is full or if the class is cancelled. Except in cases of an emergency that is disclosed to First Presbyterian Day School prior to the start of an activity, refunds will not be given five business days prior to the beginning of the class or once the class has begun.

Departure: Students should be picked up promptly at the end of each camp. For the safety of all participants, girls or boys left on campus before or after the class will be escorted to Extended Day Care.

Attendance: First Presbyterian Day School will not contact parents when a student is not in attendance. NO refunds will be given for students who do not choose to attend camps or activities.

Behavior: Students are expected to adhere to the policies and procedures of First Presbyterian Day School students. First Presbyterian Day School reserves the right to dismiss any student whose behavior poses a discipline problem. No refunds will be issued for any student who is asked to withdraw.

Personal Items: First Presbyterian Day School is not responsible for lost or stolen property. Student should not bring valuable items. All personal items should be clearly marked with the student’s name.

Bring the whole family for an afternoon at First Presbyterian Day School. Students going into 3K - 5th grade can enjoy interactive fun including an instrument petting zoo,

science lab discovery center, and a creation station. Students in middle school & high school can take tours led by student guides to meet FPD’s faculty as

well as visit our fine arts & athletic facilities, robotics program, academic clubs, and more!
