Key Note Speakers Vintilă Mihăilescu (Tuesday, June 26, 16:30-18:00, Aula ASE)

Frompeasanttopost-peasantsociety.Theruralfootprintofnation-buildingThepeasantryisconsideredastructuralandlastingfeatureofBalkansocieties in general, and of Romania in particular. Following this redline, the present talk will try to sum up the “rural footprint” ofRomanian nation-building in the Balkan context from the early 19thcentury, throughout communism, and up to the present day. Beyondembedding socio-political and economic changes all through thisperiod, this “rural footprint” also involves a speciAic culturalheritagestillframingsocialrelationsandinstitutions,(residual)oralityamongthemostimportantbutneglectedones.

BiographicalNote BacheloranddoctorinpsychologyfromtheUniversityofBucharest,VintilăMihăilescuiscurrentlyprofessorofanthropologyattheNationalSchoolofPoliticalStudiesandAdministrationinBucharest.HehasconductedpersonalandcollectiveAieldworkmainlyinruralsettingsinRomaniaforabout40years,andhasbeeninvolvedasprojectmanagerinmanyAnthropologydepartmentssince1990;hewasdirectoroftheMuseumoftheRomanianPeasantbetween2005and2010,andhasalsobeenacolumnistforDilemaVechesince1998.

Katherine Verdery (Thursday, June 28, 17:00-18:30, Aula ASE) ThoughtsonacenturyofsurveillanceAlongside the many achievements of Romania's twenty Airstcenturyhasbeenthegrowthofitssurveillancestate,inkeepingwith developments elsewhere in the world. The lecture willdiscuss several points in this process in Romania and suggesthowtheymightbeintegratedwithglobalprocesses.Biographical Note Katherine Verdery is the Julien J. StudleyDistinguishedProfessorofAnthropologyattheGraduateCenter,City University of New York. Since 1973 she has conductedanthropological research in Romania, on ethnic and nationalidentity, cultural politics, the socialist system, postsocialisttransition, the state, property transformation, and the secretpolice. Her recent books include: Peasants under Siege: TheCollectivizationofRomanianAgriculture,1949-1962(2011,withGailKligman),SecretsandTruths:Ethnography in thearchivesofRomania’sSecretPolice(2014),andmostrecently,MyLifeasaSpy:InvestigationsinaSecretPoliceFile(2018).Amongherprofessionalactivities,shehasservedasDirectoroftheCenterforRussianand East European Studies (University of Michigan), member of the Boards of Directors of theAmerican Anthropological Association and American Ethnological Society, and President of theAmericanAssociationfortheAdvancementofSlavicStudies.
