Purpose and Objectives

SESSION I • Explain the origins of ‘Stop the Bleed Campaign’

• Outline the objectives of the campaign

• Describe how to implement this program at the local, regional and state level

SESSION II • Describe the complex anatomy of the neck and neck

vessels including the carotid artery and its branches

• Cite the complex techniques required for the management of carotid injuries

• Correlate the outcomes for these injuries with the surgical techniques used for their management

• Review the techniques of hemorrhagic shock management

• Discuss the principles of shock management including surgical techniques

• Review the principles of shock management based on actual cases

• Describe the Navy’s capabilities, logistics and responses to handle wartime injuries, military catastrophes and civilian catastrophes

SESSION III • Explain the basic principles of Traumatic Brain Injury

(TBI) management including ventilator support and osmotherapy

• Examine the role of ICP management

• Discuss the Brain Trauma Foundation guidelines for the management of Traumatic Brain Injuries

• Describe the role of immunology and the immune response in the trauma patient

• Identify different components of the immune system in the trauma patient

• Describe how the immunological system may become depressed in the trauma patient

• Discuss the latest tactics for the management of infections in trauma patients

• Examine complications of antibiotic therapies in the trauma patient

• Evaluate optimal treatment of specific trauma-related infection processes

SESSION IV • Review surgical strategies employed to treat

our previous Commanders-in-Chief

• Review entire spectrum of post-traumatic stress disorder and its pervasive effects in U.S. combat veterans

SESSION V • Describe the care of an interesting and complex

trauma patient from the initial injury through the rehabilitation process

• Illustrate the integration of multiple services from field care, transport by EMS, trauma surgical and surgical critical care, and nursing care

• Discuss the integration of multiple hospital services in the care of complex trauma patients, including rehabilitation care

PURPOSE: This year’s symposium will focus on the critical need of the Stop the Bleed initiative, a nationwide campaign to empower individuals through current first aid training, clinically relevant information and educational resources in the assessment and treatment of trauma patients.

OBJECTIVES: At the end of this program, the participants should be able to:
