Welcome to the 2018 Annual LSU Undergraduate Research Conference (URC): EXCITE, EXPLORE, &

EXPERIMENT! For the past nine years, this conference has served as a platform for showcasing the research

talents of more than 770 students from more than 20 universities. As Vice President for the Office of Strategic

Initiatives, one of my primary goals is to create opportunities that promote student success in research. As we

celebrate our ten‐year milestone of hosting this conference, we are excited to have another opportunity to

showcase the outstanding undergraduate research of students throughout our region and beyond.

We are delighted to have Dr. Keena Arbuthnot, Associate Professor in the LSU School of Education as our

keynote speaker. Dr. Arbuthnot’s incredible journey from the University of Illinois at Urbana‐Champaign as a

graduate student to Harvard University as a lecturer and Postdoctoral Fellow to LSU, has resulted in her well‐

known work in the field of education and testing. Her keynote EXCITE address, From Passion to Purpose, will

inspire your curiosity and motivate you to pursue your dreams through exploration and experimentation.

This year’s agenda also includes our EXPLORE session titled, Curiosity to the 10th Power, where we will engage

in thought‐provoking case study discussions, designed to expose how learned theory applies to real‐world

situations. During this session, an opportunity to defend points of view with logic while enhancing teamwork

skills is presented. This event offers an opportunity to engage in analytical thinking, problem‐solving,

communication, and tolerance of different views on similar subjects with an overall goal of exciting the level of

critical thinking used in future academic endeavors.

Most importantly, we will showcase the research EXPERIMENTS of students from the STEM, humanities, social

sciences, and education disciplines. For some of you, this conference will serve as your first opportunity to

present, while for others it will be a great addition to your academic portfolio. We encourage you to take

advantage of all that we have planned for you today, as it will aid in preparation for your journey that lies

ahead.

As the next generation of research leaders, we hope that you will walk away from today’s conference energized

and excited about the work that you and your colleagues have done, are doing, and will continue to do.

Furthermore, we celebrate your already great accomplishments and know that the best is yet to come for each

of you since you will continue to EXCITE, EXPERIMENT, and EXPLORE.

Congratulations and continue to follow your passions by letting your curiosity lead the way!

Best Regards,

Welcome!

CURIOSITY TO THE 10TH POWER PLORE Facilitator: Dr. Tyrslai Williams

Our Explore Session, Curiosity to the 10th Power, will emphasize an excellent opportunity to engage in identifying the parameters of a problem, recognizing and articulating positions, evaluating courses of action, and arguing varying points of view by investigating case studies in either Science and Mathematics, Engineering and Technology, or Humanities, Social Sciences and Education fields. While case studies are typically employed at the professional or graduate levels in areas such as business, law, medical, and social sciences, there are many advantages to students at the undergraduate level engaging in case studies as a research method.

Curiosity to the 10th Power aims to articulate a systematic way of examining real‐life experiences and lessons learned through participating in thought‐provoking case study discussions. Students will partake in up‐close, in‐depth, and detailed investigations of the subject or case of study as it relates to related conditions. The design of this session is that students will begin to open their sense of curiosity through bridging the theory and practice learned at the undergraduate level as they apply the concepts and frameworks developed during courses to the reality of working in the field. These studies provide students with a safe environment to experiment with many aspects of their field, including decision‐making, strategy formation, and teamwork. Student researchers will be offered an opportunity to transition from gaining basic knowledge to actual application.

The application of knowledge in these case studies will impart students with skills such as critical thinking, problem‐solving, communication, and interpersonal skills for all, but for those who are actively pursuing graduate school, it will offer them the opportunity to cultivate real‐world, professional skills necessary for success.
