Newsletter 2015 NEW! NEW! NEW! The Crane River Jazz Band is one of the most revered jazz bands of the 20th Century. There is very little material of this amazing band so Upbeat is delighted to issue this. In 1972 the Cranes re-formed and their first London appearance was at the 100 Club in Oxford Street where this CD was recorded. The result was sheer joyousness and almost relaxed telepathic teamwork. This selection of recordings by Sammy from the 1990s is a good example of his special talent for combining a repertoire of standards with other numbers that are rarely used as jazz vehicles. It follows the eclectic New Orleans tradition which has always been the approach taken by musicians from the Crescent City. NEW! NEW!

All the players are world renowned in their own right. Ken Colyer trumpet, cornet, vocal, Sonny Morris trumpet, vocal, Monty Sunshine clarinet, Pat Hawes piano, John R T Davies trombone, alto sax, Ben Marshall piano, Julian Davies string bass, Colin Bowden drums.

This selection of recordings by Sammy from the 1990s is a good example of his special talent for combining a repertoire of standards with other numbers that are rarely used as jazz vehicles. It follows the eclectic New Orleans tradition which has always been the approach taken by musicians from the Crescent City. Tracks from 4 sessions recorded between 1995 and 1999 are featured here, using musicians Sammy has been associated with over the years in different bands.

Featuring Jack Teagarden and Earl Hines, this CD pre dates the two Jack Teagarden/Earl Hines CDs from the Manchester Free Trade Hall in 1957 by six years and should really be considered the fore-runner to these 2 CDs (available on the Upbeat Jazz label – URCD258 and URCD273). This is the only known recording of Cozy Cole in concert with this band. This is a live show that ‘showcases’ what many believe to be Louis Armstrong’s best post Hot 5 and Hot 7 bands.

Ken Colyer includes several numbers he had used over the years but as ever, he always manages to produce fresh versions of well-known standards. Mike Pointon has compiled this CD from a live recording from December 20th 1975 at a great Christmas party in Wimbledon. Interesting and refreshing line-up: Ken Colyer cornet, vocals, Roger Bird clarinet, Mike Sherbourne trombone, Ray Smith piano, Bill Stotesbury banjo, Annie Hawkins string bass, Colin Bowden drums. 72 minutes of great jazz as only Colyer can play - Mike Pointon has deliberately chosen long versions of tunes played live for ultimate enjoyment.

2 LAKE BESTSELLERS

LACDBK01 BOOK! A LONG WAY FROM PASADENA 1 BOOK £15.99

FIRST IN THE SERIES! REMEMBERING PAT HALCOX LACD338 2 CDs £12.99

LACD350 KEN COLYER – Colyer Plays at Colyer’s Pleasure1 CD £12.99

The remarkable history of the Temperance Seven in an autobiographical fragment by Professor Brian Innes PDSA. The Temperance Seven (all nine of them) were unique among popular acts. Graduates of the higher seat of learning (London University, Royal College of Arts, Royal Academy of Music) they were consummate musicians, quirky humourists and committed individuals. This is their story.

When Pat Halcox joined Chris Barber’s Jazz Band in the early 1950s it started a remarkable career and produced the longest serving partnership in Jazz as Pat held the trumpet chair until 2008. CD 1 has Pat playing with Chris Barber’s band, with a few tracks from each decade with guests Alex Welsh and Kenny Ball. CD 2 has Pat guesting with other bands - including Humph’s and Alex Welsh’s - playing with American visitors Art Hodes and Don Ewell & fronting his own All Stars. None of the tracks have been released before.

LACD349 Remembering IAN WHEELER 2 CDs £12.99

One of our finest reed players Ian Wheeler came to prominence in Ken Colyer’s Jazzmen when he replaced Acker Bilk in 1955. He left Ken Colyer and formed the Sims-Wheeler Vintage Jazz Band in 1959 along with trumpeter Ken Sims. It was a short stay before he got the call from Chris Barber to join his band replacing Monty Sunshine. Ian would spend 27 years in the Barber band playing clarinet, alto sax, soprano sax and harmonica. This tribute to a top-notch player sees Ian in a variety of bands in the company of Chris Barber, Ken Colyer, Sammy Rimington, Rod Mason, Ken Sims, Fessor Lindgreen and Dick Wellstood. Many previously unissued tracks. *Double CD for the price of one.

MIKE DANIELS - Mike on Mike LACD322 1 CD £12.99

Playing classic jazz from the Armstrong/Oliver/Morton period, the band made one LP and one single for major labels. Both are included here plus six ‘vintage’ tracks from the band’s early period 1949/50. Tracks include Hiawatha Rag, Steamboat Stomp, Cushion Foot Stomp, Struggle Buggy, Belmont Strut and many more.

NEW!

LACD351 CHRIS BARBER’S JAZZ BAND - BARBER IN DETROIT 1959 1 CD £12.99

The only recordings of the band made during their historic first American tour in 1959. The recordings were pirated and issued in the USA under the name of ‘The All American Jazz Band’. Never previously released in their entirety under the band’s own name. There are six bonus tracks from the same period including a duet by Ottilie and Chris which has never been released anywhere before. The CD features the usual Barber band favourites: Ottilie Patterson, Monty Sunshine, Pat Halcox and, of course, Chris Barber himself.

LACD348 AT A TANGENT VOLUME 8 – THE NEW ORLEANS STYLE BANDS 1 CD £12.99

Volume 8 in this popular series looks at the development of the New Orleans style bands in the UK between the late 1940s and 1963. The early pioneers led by Ken Colyer laid the foundations based on the revival in the USA around Bunk Johnson and George Lewis. After a while a subset started to develop with younger musicians looking at what was happening in New Orleans at the time. This CD charts this development with many rare and previously unissued tracks. You will find the full listing of CDs in this series is in the box below.

A re-issue of the long deleted LACD34 plus one extra track. It features the band in 1962 and is the only commercially issued full album recorded by this line-up. It features a very young Sammy Rimington on clarinet alongside Geoff Cole on trombone in the frontline. Newcomer Pete Ridge on drums joins the two longest serving Jazzmen, Ron Ward and John Bastable. For many this is regarded as the best all round album the band ever made in terms of recorded sound and programme. The original LP has six tracks added to it which come from a session recorded for the Michael Winner directed film ‘West Eleven’. NEW!

LACD352 HUMPHREY LYTTELTON – DUSTING OFF THE ARCHIVES 1 CD £12.99

In 1948 Humphrey Lyttelton formed his first full-time band and rapidly became the premier Traditional Jazz band in the UK. Several of the musicians who would become significant players later had formed bands, but until the Chris Barber Jazz Band came into being in 1954 Humph had no serious rivals. The band made early recordings on the small independent specialist Tempo and Esquire labels and in 1949 landed a contract with Parlophone. In 1950 their producer would be none other than George Martin! Throughout the early 50s the band’s recorded output was prolific and the recordings on this CD are very rare, coming from broadcasts, private recordings, concerts and alternative takes. Most have never been issued before and some of the tunes are the only versions the band ever recorded.

LACD353 REMEMBERING BEN COHEN VOLUME 2 1 CD £12.99

Ben Cohen spent his whole career in amateur or semi-professional bands, but was widely regarded as one of the best exponents of the early Louis Armstrong style of playing. He stuck doggedly to the cornet and was well-known for his blistering, but always tasteful, thoughtful solos and firm lead. Volume 2 sees Ben with The Sonny Dee All-Stars - a Chicago-style band featuring some top notch players - which has never been issued on CD. On Volume 1 (LACD334 – also £12.99) he is with Brian White’s Magna Jazz Band on previously unreleased tracks from 1979, 1984 and 1987. SPECIAL OFFER! Buy Volumes 1 & 2 together LACD504 for £22.

LACD354 The JAKE LEG JUG BAND – Break A Leg 1 CD £12.99

The third album by the JLJB on the LAKE label. A new line-up with three new members, but what has not changed is the repertoire. As before the material is wide-ranging mixing Jazz, Blues, Gospel, and Folk songs – all the way from the Mississippi Sheiks to the Carter Family. They have gained an enviable reputation as a lively, feel-good band both looking and sounding the part. They are not slavish copiers, but stamp their own personality on all the material. NEW!

LACD346 CHRIS BARBER’S JAZZ BAND WITH OTTILIE PATTERSON - Barber Back In Berlin 1960 2 CDS £12.99

LAKE’s fastest selling title ever! A triple CD set for the price of one! Of the 73 tracks many are previously unissued or extremely rare. The narrative in a 40 page booklet puts the bands and the music into perspective. Its popularity gave birth to the At A Tangent Series – the latest of these is on page 2, and all of the titles are still available.

One of the strongest line-ups ever of the Chris Barber band playing at the top of its game at this concert recorded in 1992. The CDs have lots of atmosphere, some excellent musicianship and was obviously enjoyed by both the band and the audience.

Over the years Chris Barber’s Band has played host to numerous visiting American Jazz and Blues musicians. The CD set contains recordings of the band with three legendary clarinet players: Edmond Hall, Albert Nicholas and Joe Darensbourg. Many of the recordings are rare and have never been released before on LP or CD. The set also includes recordings of Chris Barber’s American Jazz Band which featured trumpeter, Sidney De Paris, alongside Edmond Hall.

A previously unissued recording of Chris Barber’s 1994 concert tour featuring his original 1954 band line-up which included Monty Sunshine, a Skiffle set with the inimitable Lonnie Donegan. The second CD features the 1994 line-up of Chris Barber’s Jazz and Blues band with John Crocker, Ian Wheeler, John Slaughter, Johnny McCallum, Vic Pitt and Russell Gilbrook. The concert was scheduled to be recorded and so the sound is excellent.

This is a reissue of LACD210 with some extra tracks, previously unissued, which were discovered recently. The concerts are Berlin 1959, Copenhagen 1960 and London (Palladium) 1961. All very much sought after with the Copenhagen concert only previously appearing on CD on LACD210. It’s the usual team of Ottilie Patterson, Monty Sunshine, Pat Halcox et al. The London concert sees the introduction of Ian Wheeler and features his superb duet with Joe Harriot on ‘S Wonderful’. Great British Jazz.

This collection was one of the classic issues by the Barber band in 1978 and had some new personnel: Vic Pitt came in on bass, Roger Hill had replaced John Slaughter and Pete York came in on drums. The most significant change though was the addition of a second reed in the front line. This role was undertaken by Sammy Rimington, who had been largely regarded as a strict New Orleans style player but demonstrates here that he had much more wide ranging experience and ability. It’s a typical varied Chris Barber set, well recorded in concert.

Barber In Berlin is one of the most popular albums in Chris Barber’s discography (see ‘Classic Concerts Revisited’ LACD323). It was recorded at the Deutschlandhalle in Berlin in 1959 in front of a capacity crowd of 12,000. Almost exactly a year later the band was back. No-one can remember the concert being recorded, but in 2015 a set of tapes appeared and this is the resulting CD. The band is on cracking form with solo turns from all the favourites, Monty Sunshine, Pat Halcox, the leader himself and, of course, Ottilie Patterson.

LACD296 OTTILIE PATTERSON – Blues Book and Beyond 1 CD £12.99

The original album Blues Book & Beyond is classic blues, R ‘n’ B material and a couple of her original compositions, enhanced with previously unreleased tracks - 4 from Ottilie Swings the Irish EP - and 3 which had limited release. 23 tracks including Bad Spell Blues and Kansas City Blues.

LACD244 OTTILIE PATTERSON – That Patterson Girl 1 CD £12.99

This is one of Lake’s best selling CDs in the history of the label! This CD contains 23 tracks in all, including 11 previously unreleased songs or versions of songs. Ottilie Patterson first appeared with the band in 1955 and for the next 20 years she remained with the Barber band before retiring through ill health. In that time she became Britain’s best loved Trad Jazz singer - and is still held in great affection today - moving her style beyond the Vaudeville Blues to encompass Gospel and RB.

LACD209 KEN COLYER - New Orleans to London & Back to the Delta 1953-54 1 CD £12.99

Classic Recordings from 1953 and 1954 featuring Chris Barber, Monty Sunshine, Lonnie Donegan and Acker Bilk. It was originally issued as LACD14 and this re-issue includes the first UK issue of rare alternate ‘Delta’ sides.

LACD158 THE GREAT REVIVAL Volume 5 - Traditional Jazz 1949-1957 1 CD £12.99

LACD267 KEN COLYER 1957-58 LONESOME ROAD2 CDS £12.99

The final volume in this popular series features Kenny Ball & his Jazzmen, Mr Acker Bilk & his Paramount Jazz Band, Terry Lightfoot and his Jazzmen, Chris Barber’s New Orleans Jazz Band and George Melly. 19 terrific tracks in total. The first four titles in the series – all 1 CD @ £12.99 each – or LACD504 buy all four for £44Volume 1 LACD134 Cy Laurie, Christie Brothers, Ken Colyer, Bob Mickelburgh, Beryl Bryden & more.Volume 2 LACD135 Acker Bilk, Crane River JB, Bob Mickelburgh, Brian Wooley & Mick GillVolume 3 LACD136 Sandy Brown, Mike Daniels, Delta Jazzmen, George Chisholm & Kenny Ball Volume 4 LACD137 Chris Barber, Merseysippi Jazzband, Lew Jowet & The Second City Jazzmen

A perennial favourite collection of significant recordings made by Ken Colyer in the years 1957 and 1958. Includes the rare Hamburg concert by the Jazzmen and Skiffle Group, the EP They All Played Ragtime, the equally rare ‘live’ set which was re-recorded as Colyer Plays Standards and the only recording of the Omega Brass Band ever issued.

Wendell Eugene’s New Orleans Band was oft heard at Preservation Hall in New Orleans in the 1970s. Their style was fresh and exciting and it was decided to record the band for posterity in 1978. This CD is the result of the session at Ultrasonic Studios on Washington Avenue. Recorded in New Orleans September 1st 1978, the personnel were Wendell Eugene - Albert Walters - Raymond Burke - Jeanette Kimball - Emanuel Salyes - Les Muscutt - Chester Zardis and Chester Jones. Enjoy!

Recorded in New Orleans in September 1973, this little rarity is a gem! Personnel here are Albert ‘Fernandez’ Walters cornet, Jim Robinson trombone, Albert Burbank clarinet and vocals, James ‘Sing’ Miller piano and vocals, Narvin Kimball banjo, Chester Zardis string bsss and Dave Oxley drums and vocals.

6 tracks from Leon Prima recorded in New Orleans in October 1948 and 14 from Sharkey Bonano and his Kings of Dixieland in concert in New Orleans in 1949. Total time 71.50 minutes including High Society, Panama and Farewell Blues.

14 previously unreleased tracks of Ken Colyer with Raymond Burke which had laid forgotten for thirty years! Plus a bonus of 5 tracks previously on NOLA records, included for completeness, so the 19 New Orleans sessions from 1952 and 1953 appear together here for the first time. Band members include Ken Colyer, Raymond Burke, Dick Allen, Bill Huntingdon, Dr Edmund Souchon, Harald Katz Maestri, Jack Delaney.....

Oscar ‘Papa’ Celestin’s historic recordings, made in the 1920s for Okeh and Columbia, have assured his star place in the New Orleans firmament. All the titles on this compilation appear here for the first time on CD. They were recorded between 1949 and 1953 at venues across New Orleans. Oscar ‘Papa’ Celestin with Bill Matthews, Alphonse Picou, Octave Crosby, Richard Alex string bass, Christopher Happy Goldston drums, plus sessions with Eddie Pierson, Louis Barbarin, Joseph Thomas and others.

The series of recordings made by the Lewis band in their prime in the ‘50s has long been the inspiration to a generation of musicians. This unexpected discovery finds them still on peak form at the start of the following decade. The magic is still very much in evidence with this seven-piece line-up. The players are George Lewis clarinet, Avery ‘Kid’ Howard trumpet and vocal, Jim Robinson trombone, Charlie Hamilton piano, Emanuel Sayles banjo and vocal, Alcide ‘Slow Drag’ Pavageau bass & Joe Watkins drums and vocal. The CD runs 53m 26s.

This popular title is part of the Lord Richards New Orleans Sessions and features some of the greats of NO jazz in the 60s. 18 tracks running 66 minutes and 55 seconds. Artists here are The Louis James Orchestra, Louis Nelson Serenaders, Emile Barnes Quartet, Capt Handy’s NO Four, Doc Paulin & his Dixieland Band, The Kid Thomas Band, Dan Pawson’s Artisan Hall Stompers, Billie & DeDe Pierce and The Eagle Brass Band.

Another of the popular Lord Richards New Orleans Sessions, featuring two great New Orleans artists. The first is The Louis James Orchestra featuring Earl Humphrey and Andrew Morgan recorded in New Orleans in 1967. The second features Capt. John Handy’s New Orleans Four and was recorded in Egham, England in 1966, including four previously unreleased tracks from the band..

Recorded in April 2015 at the legendary Dew Drop Social and Dance Hall in Mandeville, Louisiana on the northern shore of Lake Ponchatrain. It was a stormy day and the band and recording team only just made it to the venue! But the trip was well worth it as you will hear! 18 tracks with Brian Carrick and his clarinet leading an ace team of New Orleans musicians.

A dream reissue - all the Henry Allen New York Orchestra’s Victor recordings made between 1929 and 1930, as well as those featuring the Spivey Sisters. Also here are four titles by the Luis Russell Orchestra, comprising largely the same musicians. The sidemen were handpicked by Allen and Russell and are regarded as among the finest of their era. Long before Ellington and Basie, this is where swing really started

Physical disability is no bar to musicianship – as Wingy Manone here testifies - playing the trumpet with only one arm - inconvenient, but not impossible. This compilation is of the ‘happy’ songs Wingy recorded at the height of his recording success with Isle Of Capri. If not all the lyrics were actually happy in content, then Manone made sure that the overall effect was the desired one at the time of Depression - a lifting of spirits. Everything received the unique Manone treatment, even unbelievably On The Good Ship Lollipop, which owed nothing to Shirley Temple!

The Hamfats combined blues and popular material. Trumpeter Herb Morand and clarinettist Odell Rand joined Joe and Charlie McCoy and Horace Malcolm on piano to play music both cultivated and down home. The result? Goodtime music, played with the skill and panache of experienced session men. Irresistible. Remastered with a full discography.

Skiffle was a marvellous amalgam of blues, jazz and swinging folk and some of the best & most important music is presented here. There are 100 tracks in total with copious notes. Artists include Lonnie Donegan, Ken Colyer’s Skiffle Group, Chris Barber’s Skiffle Group, Vipers Skiffle Group, 2.19 Skiffle Group and many more.

This set provides all of the Scobey band recordings from 1948 to July 1955, including the first issues from Scobey’s own Ragtime Records which have never previously been available on CD. The set also includes sessions with the artists Darnell Howard and Albert Nicholas, featuring popular tunes like Clarinet Marmalade and the famous composition of St. Louis Blues which occurs twice as an instrumental. The recordings also feature Clancy Hayes and there are 51 tracks in total over 2 CDs.

Gennett started with popular and classical music, but by the early 1920s it was clear that great profits lay with jazz. They signed the New Orleans Rhythm Kings whose first four sides are here. Success was immediate and Gennett spread their net wider with Miff Mole, King Oliver, Bix Beiderbecke, Johnny Dodds, and Louis Armstrong. Fully annotated box set.

The complete May 1957 Session by Bob Wallis and his band, originally recorded for Doug Dobell’s 77 label. The CD features Bob Wallis trumpet and vocals with his Storyville Jazzmen - Les Wood clarinet, John Mortimer trombone, Pete Gresham piano, Hugh Rainey banjo, Stu Wimsey string bass and Ginger Baker, who would later play in in cult rock band Cream, on drums.

These highly acclaimed re-masters by John R T Davies put the JSP reissues of classic jazz at the forefront of the reissue scene. This music has never sounded so full with so much depth. An essential set that belongs in every jazz collection.

Across this 2 disc set you will be able to hear at first hand the great versatility of Turk Murphy and his superior ensemble work that made him so popular across the scene. The first twelve tracks on this fantastic 2 CD set showcases the variety of the band and include traditional tracks such as St Louis Blues plus tracks carried through from his Lu Watters days. Towards the close of the second disc we hear the band ‘live’ and in full swing at the 1955 New Orleans Jazz Festival. 39 Tracks in total across 2 discs.

Here is the finest single disc summary of the career of Clarence Williams (1893-1965), one of the most influential figures in jazz. Clarence was a jazz phenomenon: pianist, singer, arranger, composer, leader, dancer, record producer, music publisher, entrepreneur and even jug blower! He always managed to stamp the finished result with his personality, and had the ability to make a small band sound like a much larger one.

This 2 CD centenary collection represents a microcosm of his creative journey from dashing young trumpet-major to an artist instantly and joyfully recognizable. Edison Inventions presents arguably his 25 finest performances from his superlative Quartet and Sextet recordings of 1953-1962, together with three examples of his supreme ability as a muted accompanist, to vocalists Sinatra, Fitzgerald and Cole.

This CD is the cream of “McKinney’s Cotton Pickers”. Thanks to the inspired leadership of Don Redman, and an extraordinary line-up of instrumental ‘greats’ – Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Rex Stewart, Fats Waller and others – they are a delight from start to finish. Never Swat A Fly is Retrospective’s selection of the 26 finest of these remarkable discs, from the first sessions in July 1928 Four Or Five Times, through the amazing 1929 band with its incredible sax section of Don Redman, Benny Carter and Coleman Hawkins, to their biggest hit If I Could Be With You One Hour Tonight in 1930, and the group’s final flourish You’re Driving Me Crazy.

Retrospective presents a new double album devoted to one of the most distinctive and innovative trombonists of them all: Vic Dickenson. The 34 tracks, all definitive examples of his art, give a career summary from his first recording in 1930 (as a singer!) through to the 1961 solo, Vic’s Spot. In between Vic plays with many of the jazz greats of the 40s and 50s: Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Sidney De Paris, Bobby Hackett, Pee Wee Russell, Eddie Condon and so on. There is a generous helping from Vic Dickenson’s immortal 1953/4 Septet sessions with Ruby Braff and Edmond Hall!

The Original Dixieland Jazz Band was the first band to wax the sound of jazz, thereby providing a blueprint which others sought to emulate. Although all of the recordings on this centenary tribute were cut in the acoustic era, the technology involved was sufficiently advanced to capture their sound, both individually and collectively. Moreover, many of the numbers which they chose to record, some of which they’d composed themselves, became jazz standards. The band had a considerable influence in America and in England, which they visited in 1919 &1920.

This centenary tribute is the finest single CD of the fabulously unique alto sax sound of Earl Bostic who carved a special niche for himself in the annals of great saxophone players. Always a brilliant technician, from a background of playing in, and arranging for, jazz big-bands such as Lionel Hampton’s, he become a household name when he took popular standards and gave them a hard-driving edge, as with the lilting Latin number he took for his million-selling signature tune, Flamingo.

Trombonist Wilbur De Paris had a long apprenticeship with Duke Ellington, but his golden years of the 50s, enshrined on these two Retrospective CDs, genuinely extended the boundaries of traditional jazz. For him, jazz was a living art and as hot as mustard. This is New Orleans Jazz at its very best – over two & a half hours of invigorating jazz!

This collection is very much the cream of the crop for Jug Band Music from the 20s and 30s. There are 25 original tracks featuring The Memphis Jug Band, Dixieland Jug Blowers, Clarence Williams’ Jug Band and many more. Tracks include Boodle-am Shake, Ankle Strut, Ripe Green Tomatoes and The Jug Band Special.

A superb 2 CD survey of one of jazz’s all-time greats, Lionel Hampton – the virtuoso of the vibes. Lionel Hampton (1908-2002) was a true giant of jazz, a flamboyant showman who was an indefatigable bandleader, drummer, pianist, singer and, above all, the most famous vibraphone player in jazz history – the first to use it as other than a novelty. These are his 48 finest tracks.

This profile of clarinettist Edmond Hall (1901-1967) – one of the greatest of the New Orleans jazz giants – makes a superb addition to the Retrospective jazz list. Hall’s individual style was instantly recognizable, with its broad, fast vibrato. His was hot, fiery music, full of drive and biting attack – yet he possessed a wonderful feeling for the blues.

A jazz treat! This CD covers 21 years of one of the all-time greats of the trumpet: Billy Butterfield. What’s New? was the title of his first big success with Bob Crosby. In addition to featuring all the milestones of his career from 1938 to 1959, this CD presents many gems from long-deleted 10 inch LPs of the 50s made when he was at the peak of his powers. George Hulme wrote in Just Jazz “Billy Butterfield was one of the finest jazz and Big Band trumpeters. The set has excellent quality transfers. The playing time is generous. I strongly recommend this CD”.

This 2-CD set offers 44 tracks, including Humph’s early recordings issued on 78s by Parlophone, and all but one of the numbers from the 1954 album recorded live at the Conway Hall. Most were drawn from the existing jazz repertoire, including some quite obscure items, such as Elephant Stomp Blues. Others had their roots within the band, with allusions to clarinettist Wally Fawkes, trombonist John Picard, and saxophonist Bruce Turner. Humph’s strong lead dominates the proceedings in these classic recordings.

America made Wall Street the world’s money mart, Hollywood the factory of the world’s day dreams, and Tin Pan Alley the maker of the music it danced to…the America of the 1920s that passed into the file of the world’s memory is not an America of throbbing steel production … but a kind of mass idiocy and frivolity. Europe, drained of life and invention after the war, first jeered and then eagerly copied these hectic fads – cocktails, bobbed hair, the Charleston! A generous 26 tracks in total.

Celebrating the centenary of the great British jazz trombonist Disc 1 (1937-1944) presents George from his first studio session with Gerry Moore in 1937, through his notable early dates with such as Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Fats Waller, and Danny Polo’s Swing Stars, plus his 1938 Jive 5 & 1944 Jive 8 recordings & some from the years he spent with The Squadronaires. Disc 2 (1947-1962) shows how his style shifted in the 50s towards mainstream jazz, but he never forsook ‘Trad’, as this disc also demonstrates.

A historic concert which represented a glorious celebration of old-time jazz. Recorded at New York’s famed venue Town Hall in 1946, this album features two bands’ worth of fabulous jazz musicians, including Sidney Bechet, Baby Dodds, Miff Mole, Wild Bill Davison, Pee Wee Russell & Muggsy Spanier, who mixed themselves together on the night as the mood directed.

Rare live performances from some of the great men of New Orleans Jazz – Sidney Bechet, Bunk Johnson, Kid Ory, Jelly Roll Morton and The Original Dixieland Jazz Band. Recordings date from 1940-1948.

This collection was compiled by Ray Crick, with final restoration and remastering by Alan Bunting. Les Paul plays electric guitar on all tracks, and the CD was recorded in Les Paul’s home studio (from late 1947). It contains 26 of his finest tracks from 1925-1928 with his Hot Fives and Sevens. Artists here include Johnny Dodds, Earl Hines, Lonnie Johnson, Kid Ory and Don Redman.

This collection is a unique survey of the very best of Bobby Hackett, often described as the most beautiful horn in the world. Comparing top trumpeters, Louis Armstrong once declared that Bobby Hackett (1915-1976) had more ingredients. This generous Retrospective of the 27 finest tracks from his vintage years of 1938 to 1960 is an unrivalled demonstration of all those glorious ‘ingredients, including six tracks with Jack Teagarden.

OTHER POPULAR TITLES IN THIS SERIES:

Tommy Ladnier was a trumpeter and cornettist who was active in the early years of jazz and recorded prolifically during the 1920s and early ‘30s making some very important recordings with the likes of Sidney Bechet, Fletcher Henderson, Ma Rainey and Mezz Mezzrow in the late ‘30s before his sudden and tragically early death in 1939 at the age of 39. This 48-track 2-CD set draws from the 180 sides he recorded during his career and provides a showcase for his often overlooked and under-estimated talent in the context of some of the best jazz of his time.

This 47-track set focuses on the key years during the 1920s when he recorded with the likes of King Oliver’s Dixie Syncopators, Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five, Jelly Roll Morton’s Red Hot Peppers, and other notable ensembles, to help produce some of the landmark recordings of the era, including, of course, his own famous composition Ory’s Creole Trombone. It’s an entertaining cross-section of the music of the time, and an opportunity to hear some of the best players in the early years of the genre.

Ben Pollack was a drummer and bandleader whose primary contribution to jazz was not so much his own musical prowess or uniqueness, but his eye for new talent, which enabled him to assemble bands, orchestras and small groups which comprised some of the top emerging names of the era, notably the likes of Benny Goodman the Dorsey brothers, Glenn Miller, Jack Teagarden, Harry James and Irving Fazola. 49 tracks spanning his career from the 20s to the 50s.

Oran Hot Lips Page was a jazz trumpeter, vocalist and bandleader whose extrovert and exciting style allied to his showmanship made him a popular performer with audiences and fellow musicians alike. This 46-track collection brings together recordings with a wide selection of ensembles, both as sideman and leader. It features performances by some of the top names in jazz including Artie Shaw, Ben Webster, Billie Holiday, Albert Ammons, Big Joe Turner, Eddie Condon, Sidney Bechet and many more.

Eddie Condon was a guitarist, banjo player and bandleader in the ‘Chicago school’ of early jazz who successfully negotiated the musical vagaries of swing, big band and bebop until he was able to ride the wave of the Dixieland revival during the 1950s. This 2 CD collection encompasses a fascinating range of styles and repertoire.

Dr. Michael White plays clarinet in the style of Johnny Dodds, and the effect here is amazing! Accompanying him are Norman Thatcher trumpet, Emil Mark piano, Colin Bray string bass and Big Bill Bissonnette on drums. The recordings was made in 1999 at the Audiophile Studios in New Orleans.

You can basically slice Omer Simeon’s life into three impressive sections: The JT Morton period, the Earl Hines big band period and the DeParis Band period. Over 90 of his recordings were made with those three bands. But there were other important recordings, some under his own name, and these are the sessions that we concentrate here, including tracks with Reuben Reeves. Personnel include Earl Hines, Hayes Alvis, Wallace Bishop, Richard M. Jones, James P. Johnston, Pops Foster, Sammy Price and Zutty Singleton. See page 9 for the other CDs in the series.

Louis Nelson was one of the great New Orleans jazz trombonists and he toured the UK during 1975 with Dave Brennan’s Jazzmen. This CD features 10 tracks recorded at Swinden House in Rotherham. Meanwhile, legendary pianist Alton Purnell toured the UK with the same band in 1974, and here we feature 8 tracks, again recorded in Rotherham, but this time at the Grange Park Golf Club. Both men are on fine form - and Dave’s band ain’t bad either, featuring Dave with Bugs Burgon, Brian Turnock, Terry Kennedy, Martin Boyd, Dick Douthwaite and Pat O’Brian trombone.

Gumbo is a traditional New Orleans soup containing many individual ingredients which mix into a spicy, well-seasoned and vigorous whole, and this is musically what we have here. The recordings were made during the 1993 French Quarter Jazz Festival with 18 local and visiting musicians in various combinations to produce a blend of authentic New Orleans jazz. Personnel include Milton Batiste, Sammy Rimington, Paul Boehmke, Mike Owen, Big Bill Bissonnette, Sadie Goodson-Colar, Emil Mark, Colin Bray, Tuba Fats, Emile Martyn, Andrew Hall and Linda Young.

Great sounds recorded between 1950 and 1954 featuring Muggsy Spanier and his trumpet with a variety of artists including George Brunis, Harry Graves, Ralph Hutchinson trombone, Darnell Howard, Phil Gomez clarinet, Boomie Richman tenor sax , Floyd Bean, Red Richards piano, Truck Parham string bass, Billy Mure guitar, Sid Catlett, Barrett Deems & George Wettling drums.

This is good time music - the sort that much happier times was played in neighbourhood bars and dance halls all over New Orleans and its satellite communities of Algiers, Gretna and Westwego. Brian Carrick plays a clarinet that once belonged to George Lewis and was given to him by George’s daughter. It is held together by rubber bands - but the tone and sound are amazing none the less! The 17 tunes on this collection include standards and old time favourites. Something for everyone from Brian and his Algiers Stompers!

Jimmy Ryan’s on 42nd Street was THE place for jazz in New York in the 50s. Once inside, the magic began and it was always packed. These 3 CDs capture the excitement of great ‘live’ jazz! Sit back & enjoy! Separately, the CDs are available at £12.99 each, and all three feature Omer Simeon. JCCD3009 An Evening at Jimmy Ryan’s JCCD3061 Another Evening at Jimmy Ryan’sJCCD3068 One More Evening at Jimmy Ryan’s

This is a great little session recorded in October 1999. Gregg Stafford’s horn and Brian Carrick’s clarinet are a match made in heaven. Both really sing here. Add to them a terrific rhythm section of Emil Mark at the piano, Colin Bray and his string bass and Sven Stahlberg on drums and you have a happy session of great jazz!

What you hear here will transport you back to a bright, sunny day in October 1968 and to the Kid Thomas Valentine Algiers Stompers virtually at their peak. The music is vintage Thomas with his standard line-up. As he always did he would just begin a tune and the band would pick it up. They knew what he was going to play from the first few notes. This was a cohesive session, with the whole group on fine form.

Then is from 1965 when Sammy Rimington first played with the Easy Riders. They were recorded by George Buck, but not released at the time, and he generously agreed that they be included in this series, together with some tunes from the new band. Volume 2 is 33 years later, the Now band dating from 1998! Band personnel are Sammy Rimington, Fred Vigorito, Big Bill Bissonnette, Bill Sinclair, Dick Griffith, Mouldy Dick McCarthy & Art Pulver.

Three exceptional rare sessions by Louis Armstrong. The first is from the 30s - a marvellous airshot featuring an all-star band including Louis and Fats Waller together on their only live collaboration, plus Jack Teagarden, Bud Freeman, Al Casey, Red Callendar and Slick Jones! The second session is from the 40s and is a live performance from the Nice Jazz Festival by the original Armstrong All-Stars. The third session is from the 50s and was performed at New York’s famous Basin Street East Nightclub.

Here we have nine tracks from Tuba Fats’ Chosen Few Brass Band recorded in New Orleans in November 1985 together with four tracks of Tuba Fats’ Jazzmen recorded in April 2002 in New Orleans. This is marching band music that brings everyone out onto the street.

Capt John Handy is mainly associated with the alto sax, but he was also a fine clarinet player as these tracks will testify. The personnel here is unusual, but included Alvin Alcorn and Placide Adams. They were recorded in New Orleans in August 1965. The second session on this disc dates from the beginning of 1952 and sees Jimmy Archey playing trombone on unissued air shots from Jimmy Ryan’s with Henry Goodwin, Benny Waters, Dick Wellstood, Pops Foster and Tommy Benford.

Three sessions feature on this disc and serve as a fitting reminder of a great clarinet player! The first was recorded in Barnes, London in December 1995. The second at the Bude Festival in August 1993, and the third in Nottingham in April 1996. So Chris is gone, but his music lives on in these recordings, including tracks that you will not have heard before! Personnel over the three recordings include Chris Blount, Norman Thatcher, Dave Vickers, Big Bill Bissonnette, Dave Brennan, Mick Kennedy, Ken Matthews and Malc Murphy.

Tony Pyke has played with all the greats - Ken Colyer, Mac Duncan and George Lewis and in 1995 he teamed up with his former Colyer colleague Cuff Billett to record for Jazz Crusade. His musical tastes are wide and varied, but never far away from New Orleans. Cuff Billett has a similarly wide and varied background and has also played with the greats, including George Lewis, Peanuts Hucko, Capt Handy and Kid Sheik! Together, they play some great tunes on this session from May 2002, recorded in England! Sit back and enjoy!

These two volumes of The Thomas Band at Moose Hall in 1968 lay in the vaults of the Connecticut Traditional Jazz Club for 32 years - but now they can be enjoyed again and the music is as fresh as the day it was recorded with Kid Thomas in splendid shape at the age of 72!

Recorded live on tour in Denmark with Peter Nissen’s New Orleans Jazz Band in 1993, this tour was a lot of fun. Big Bill played alongside Peter Nissen’s band with Sammy Rimington and it was a typical New Orleans Jazz concert with many familiar tunes, plus some more unusal fare.

JCCD3109 Volume 8 Great Clarinet PlayersHere we have three mighty titans of the jazz clarinet and the amazing legacy of tracks that they recorded during the heyday years of the 1950s. The Albert Nicholas tracks date from 1953 and were recorded in France.

Edmond Hall’s offering is from Club Hangover in California in 1954 and the George Lewis tracks date from 1956/57 in San Francisco. JCCD3112 Volume 9 Franz Jackson & Paul BarbarinFranz Jackson has had a notable and diverse career having served stints in the bands of Jimmie Noone, Fletcher Henderson, Roy Eldridge, Albert Ammons, Earl Hines, Fats Waller and Cootie Williams! This was a showband par excellence! The CD was recorded at The Village Gate New York City in December 1968. Paul Barbarin’s Onward Brass Band filled a very similar function in New Orleans, to play for jazz clubs and civic

organisations. These sides were recorded at the Holiday Inn in Meriden Connecticut in July 1968. JCCD3116 Volume 10 Black HornsSidney de Paris is certainly one of the most under-rated trumpeters, always in the shadow of his brother Wilbur. The session on this CD features Sidney’s show band and there is an interesting mix of songs played dixieland style. Tommy Ladnier was also a much under-rated trumpet virtuoso. His big break came when he was hired to replace Lee Collins in the King Oliver band, and later he played with Sidney Bechet and Mezz Mezzrow. Our third virtuoso here is Lee Collins - the man who replaced Louis Armstrong in the King Oliver Band at the height of the band’s fame!

JCCD3119 Volume 11 – Slip HornThis volume of rare sides and out-takes features three great trombonists. The 9 Ory tracks date form the 50s and include the seldom heard I’m With You Where You Are. The Preston Jackson tracks are earlier and date from July 1926. Here is a man with great technique and totally off the wall

timing. DePriest Wheeler’s 5 tracks date from 1925 and these are the previously ‘lost’ and unknown Missourians tracks. Also featured on these tracks is the trumpet player Sidney de Paris. The whole Missourians band was just incredible!

JCCD3123 Volume 12 New Orleans ObscuritiesJust look at the line-up of players on this album. The cream of the crop, and the New Orleans crop at that! Even these great names made some obscure recordings and these, indeed, are they. The artists here including Papa Celestin, Johnny Dodds, Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, The New Orleans Rhythm Kings and Jimmy Noone. JCCD3129 Volume 13 LagniappeHere are the last public recordings of Louis Armstrong playing his

horn. Includes rare recordings of Gene Krupa made for the film The Gene Krupa Story with players including Red Nichols. Rare tracks of Wilbur de Paris, culled from the TV Show Those Ragtime Years, and finally tracks featuring some ‘down home’ dixieland jazz by New Orleans Sharkey Bonano from his 1950s radio shows.

JCCD3036 Volume 1 – Bunk, Bocage & Bechet This is the first in the Jazz Nocturne series and it includes a rehearsal session with Bunk and Bechet for their radio appearances. Plus it gives us the first of the Bechet/Bocage sessions. These sessions are also notable for the work of pianist Ray Parker and drummer George Thompson who are both excellent front row jazzmen, but who have tended to be forgotten in the presence of the great like Bunk, Sidney and the inimitable Pops Foster.

JCCD3039 Volume 2 – Bunk & Bechet Rare sessions recorded in Boston in the spring of 1945 which bring together Bunk Johnson’s trumpet and Sidney Bechet’s clarinet and soprano sax, with Ray Parker on piano, George Thompson on drums and the inimitable Pops Foster on string bass. A great if rare combination not to be missed!

SPECIAL OFFER! JCCD 7002 Buy volumes 1 & 2 together for £22 JCCD3040 Volume 3 – Bunk & Bechet The third in this occasional series sees Bunk Johnson trumpets joined by Sidney Bechet saxes, Ray Parker piano, George Thompson drums and Pops Foster string bass. These rare recordings are of high historical interest for any jazz fan, especially those who consider New Orleans music one of the basic species of life! What you have here is two of the most creative personalities in jazz history - Bunk Johnson and Sidney Bechet - playing many seldom heard songs with a rhythm section that knows it all! JCCD3041 Volume 4 – Bocage & Bechet This CD continues the broadcasts of Sidney Bechet’s New Orleans Rhythm Kings from the Savoy Cafe in Boston in the spring of 1945. Bocage, like Bechet, believed that great jazz could be made from any tune and consequently the choice of music is quite unusual! This is interesting music played by experienced musicians in the New Orleans style. JCCD3042 Volume 5 – Bocage & Bechet Rare recordings from May 1945 of Peter Bocage with Sidney Bechet recorded from the Jazz Nocturne airshots in Boston. Bechet was trying to perfect his ideal New Orleans sound, and experimented with style and imagination on these sides. This is the fifth CD in the Jazz Nocturne series and contains some rare arrangements of songs not usually connected with New Orleans! A must for all collectors!

Recorded in California, this compilation includes the historic 1922 recordings by Kid Ory, as well as the complete recordings of Harvey Brooks’ Quality Four and Reb Spikes. Remastering is by John R.T. Davies, and extensive liner notes are by Russ Shor and John Wilby.

This important compilation includes the complete recordings of the New York Tanz Orchestra, led by George Carhart and featuring Danny Polo and Dave Tough, as well as the complete Swiss recordings by Frank Guarente’s Georgians. These rare sides have never been reissued in their entirety before.

Recorded in New York, Berlin, Barcelona, and Paris. A contemporary of Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson, Sam Wooding left the US in the early 20s to bring jazz to Europe and the Soviet Union. In his eight years abroad he and his star-studded orchestra were pivotal in spreading and popularizing jazz all over Europe and Russia. During this time he paid repeated visits to recording studios in Germany, Spain and France. All of the European discs he recorded are now mythically rare collectors’ items. His recordings, including several previously unissued alternate takes, are now available for the first time in their entirety. Extensive liner notes in the 60-page booklet are by renowned researcher Rainer Lotz.

17 tracks from Celestin’s Original Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra recorded in New Orleans 1925-28. These are his complete recordings in chronological order, including a recently discovered alternate take of Station Calls. There is also a bonus 8 tracks from Sam Morgan’s Jazz Band recorded in New Orleans in 1927, where band members include Jim Robinson on trombone.

The complete recordings of Merritt Brunies and his Friars Inn Orchestra, led by the New Orleans trumpeter and his brother, trombonist Henry Brunies. The compilation also includes several other rare New Orleans tracks by Johnny De Droit, Papalia and his Orchestra, Brownlee’s Orchestra of New Orleans, Scranton Sirens Orchestra, New Orleans Owls and Ellis Stratakos and his Jung Hotel Orchestra.

The complete solo clarinet recordings of Jimmy Lytell, recorded between 1926 and 1928 for Pathé. Lytell, primarily a studio musician and a mainstay of the Original Memphis Five during the 1920s, is revealed here to be a fine soloist in his own right. This compilation contains all known takes of these recordings, which also feature such luminaries as Eddie Lang, Dick McDonough, Frank Signorelli and Rube Bloom. The fully-illustrated booklet includes notes by collector Phil Melick, and audio restoration is by Karl Machat.

This release includes the hot recordings made for the Edison Company by Joe Herlihy’s Orchestra, the Piccadilly Players and Mal Hallett, including eight rejected masters. Liner notes by researcher Joe Moore put Edison’s recordings of jazz and hot dance artists into perspective and provide new information about the featured bands.

The complete instrumental recordings by this obscure band, recorded in 1924 and 1925. These sides are of special interest as they include the first recordings by two important jazzmen - Sidney Arodin, who went on to participate in several classic sessions during the 1920s and 1930s, and Brad Gowans, who was a fixture of the New York Dixieland scene during the 1940s.

The complete recordings of this washboard band which was assembled by Decca Records in 1934 and 1935. These exciting sides feature the fine trumpet work of Taft Jordan, and are important as examples of how the washboard band style evolved in the 1930s after gaining popularity in the mid-1920s.

BDW8041 FESS WILLIAMS 1926 -1930 2 CDs £15.99

BDW8009 Gennett Rarities1 CD £12.99

Mythically rare recordings made by the Gennett Company on field trips to Birmingham. Most of you will need no introduction to Dave Moorwood’s music. This new recording is of his Frisco-style of jazz which was a development of the music of King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band of 1923. The CD runs a generous 71 minutes.

This fine Yorkshire favourite – Savannah Jazz Band – was recorded live at The Risley Park Jazz Club in March 2016. The band is on fine form and the CD runs 63 minutes. The line-up is Bill Smith cornet, vocals & harmonica, Roger Myerscough clarinet, alto sax, & vocals, Brian Ellis trombone & piano, Chris Marney banjo & vocals, Tony Pollitt bass and John Meehan drums.

The Black Swan at Hollins Green, Warrington is where Martin Bennett holds his regular monthly club sessions, usually with his Old Green River Band. On this occasion he was able to obtain the services of Jack Andersson (trumpet) from Sweden who was in town having his instrument serviced. Howard Murray (reeds) was away and John Hallam stepped in. Derek Galloway (for many years the front man of the Temperance Seven) joined the band on trombone. This was a proper old-style impromptu pub jazz session and the result is here for you to enjoy!

The Millenium Eagle Jazz Band has changed its name back to The Eagle Jazzband, their original name when the band formed in 1951, but nothing else has changed. They are still one of the UK’s finest hot traditional jazz bands and this CD from a session last March at Burton-on-Trent Jazz Club, shows the band at its best. The CD runs a generous 74 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER! PKCD701 Buy both volumes together for £22

The Keswick Jazz Festival was launched in 1992 and Brian Carrick’s Heritage Hall Stompers played two sessions on the opening day. Here they are now released for the first time of CD, and while the recording quality is not to today’s standard, this deficiency is more than made up for by the electric atmosphere and the superb music!

SPECIAL OFFER! PKCD702 Buy the two together for £22

Two CDs from this popular band - the first was recorded in 2006, the second in 2008, but the line-up for both is the same: Tony O’Sullivan trumpet, John Crocker clarinet and alto sax, Len Baldwin trombone, Peter Morcomb tenor banjo, Gerry Rose double bass and Malc Murphy drums. They make no attempt slavishly to copy the sound of a Ken Colyer band but rather they play with integrity the style of music to which Ken devoted his life.

The Lewis band in its heyday during the 50s featuring Big Jim Robinson, Alcide ‘Slow Drag’ Pavageau, Alton Purnell, Punch Miller and Paul Barbarin. Three separate sessions here from 1950, 1951 and 1958. It doesn’t get any better than this!

Big Bill wrote in the notes that it is essential to “water the roots” of New Orleans jazz to keep the flame burning. This CD was recorded in 1955 and the personnel were jazz perfection as Sammy and Big Bill were joined by Eric Webster, Ken Matthews and Colin Bowden, with special guest Sarah Spencer. There are some great tunes here which are rarely heard in the New Orleans style!

A recording of a wonderful tour of Scandinavia in 1974 by Kid Sheik Cola with special guest Joseph ‘Brother Cornbread’ Thomas, a New Orleans old stager and first class clarinet! The Kid had to work hard to ensure that Cornbread did not get all the attention, and when you listen to the end result here, I think you will agree that both Kid Sheik and Brother Cornbread were seriously underrated.

Norman Thatcher was nothing if not versatile. While he made his reputation leading the Ken Colyer Trust New Orleans Jazz Band he is no mere Colyer clone! There is only a touch of Britain’s most successful trumpet player in his style - and that in sublime moderation. This is an unusual album for him - and indeed for Jazz Crusade - drawing more on Bix Biederbecke than any of the others!

THATCHER, BLOUNT & VICKERS – River Stay ‘Way JCCD3018 1 CD £12.99

This CD features some of the finest British jazzmen from three of the UK’s top bands – The Ken Colyer Trust New Orleans Jazz Band, The Jubilee Jazz Band and the Chris Blount New Orleans Jazz Band – coming together for a session at The Bull at Barnes in December 1995. It features lots of unusual tunes and a great ensemble! Dave Brennan and Malc Murphy also feature here.

Both of these excellent volumes made The Jazz Rag Top Ten!!!Volume 2 of this fabulous 1957 Manchester concert by a specially assembled group starring two icons of Jazz. The concert was presented by The National Jazz Federation, and with the obvious exception of Max Kaminsky, every musician had previously been a member of Louis Armstrong’s All Stars. The promoters thought they would appeal to the British public in the same way Satchmo himself had on his first post-war visit the previous year – and judging by the rapturous applause, the audience agreed! Volume 1 (URCD258) has quickly sold out of its first pressing and has joined our all-time fastest sellers!

Chris Blount began his career in the 1950s - this current recording dates from 1996. Derek WInters’ strong, solid bedrock trumpet lead gives the band punch and drive - but Chris Blount is what this CD is all about! In the style of George Lewis, he is a real New Orleans style master. Although he has never been to New Orleans, New Orleans has been to him for a very long time! Full personnel are Chris Blount clarinet, Derek Winters trumpet, Ron Radford trombone, Barry Grummett piano, Tony Peatman banjo, Harry Slater string bass and Steve Upton drums.

REISSUED! KEN COLYER TRUST NEW ORLEANS JAZZ BAND – A Tribute to the Original Crane River Jazz BandJCCD3020 1 CD £12.99

By the time of the 1972 Crane River Jazz Band reunion tour, each of the original musicians had charted his own music course. Thus the ‘72 band had a sound of its own, very distinct, very different from the uniqueness of the original Cranes. This CD is a tribute to the sound of the original Cranes by the only band in England who can pull it off! It is a strong line-up, featuring Sonny Morris, Norman Field, Dave Vickers, Hugh Crozier, Malcolm Hurrell, Terry Knight, Malc Murphy and of course, Norman Thatcher. The tune selection contains many of their repertoire, but is not limited to it.

JIMMY DORSEY’S DORSEYLAND JAZZ BAND Live in the USA 1950 Volume 2 JCCD3128 1 CD £12.99

In the early 1930s, Jimmy Dorsey was the star of the great Ted Lewis Band. He and his brother Tommy then went on to greatness in the Swing Era, both leading successful big bands. Both bands had smaller ‘Dixieland’ combos within the big bands – and Jimmy’s Dorseyland Jazz Band was one of the hottest dixieland jazz bands ever! The tracks on this CD are from New York City Airshots recorded live at the Hotel Statler in 1950.
