UVa-Wise will look for its third straight season opening victory when third-year Head Coach Dane Damron leads his team into Thursday's game against Glenville State at Carl Smith Stadium. The Cavaliers opened last season with a 41-29 win in Glenville behind Kaian Duverger's 104 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Picked seventh in the Mountain East Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, Damron's crew enters the 2018 season having to replace eight starters on a defense that ranked 34th nationally in total defense in 2017.

The unit will get tested early as the Pioneers return nine starters on offense, including a pair of All-MEC Second-Team selections in wide receiver Javon Butler and offensive lineman Caleb Doak. Last season, Butler caught 39 passes for 609 yards while grabbing nine touchdowns. A 6-foot-1, 285-pound junior, Doak is slated to see time at left tackle. At quarterback, Glenville State is scheduled to start Jaylen McNair who played in every game but the season opener last fall. The sophomore passed for 1,857

yards and 20 touchdowns while completing 54.8 percent of his passes as a freshman.

UVa-Wise will also have to deal with Mario Pender who should see time at tailback and as a kick returner. Most recently, Pender played for Florida State University where he averaged 4.9 yards per carry over 71 attempts while adding five rushing touchdowns. The senior also caught 13 passes while adding a receiving score to his ledger during his time in a Seminoles uniform.

The senior trio of Donavan Montague (6-3, 220), Dylan Giovine (6-0, 220) and Chris White, (6-1, 215) will be counted on to lead the UVa-Wise defense. A year ago, Montague earned CoSIDA Academic All-District accolades for his work in the classroom while being a second-team all-league performer on the field. He led the team with 8.5 sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss. Giovine will start at middle linebacker after making 68 stops, incluing 11 behind the line of scrimmage in 2017 while White posted 41 tackles and five tackles for loss in his junior season last fall.

On defense, Glenville State will try to improve from a 2017 campaign that saw opponents score 29.3 points per game. The Pioneers struggled to stop the Cavaliers passing attack in last year's meeting, surrendering 318 yards and three touchdowns through the air.

UVa-Wise will rely heavily on its experienced offensive line which boasts a trio of seniors in center Chase Cluesman (6-2, 282), right guard Will Pendegraph (6-2, 297) and right tackle Connor Patton (6-4, 284) to anchor the offense. Either redshirt junior Brycen Lee or sophomore Jarome Johnson will start behind center while converted linebacker Jamorya Cousin is slated to start at running back. alongside senior Victor Mitchell. Duverger will be flanked by sophomore Chris Thaxton at the other wide receiver position.

An area to watch is the return game, last year UVa-Wise posted 24.03 yards per return to lead the league and rank 20th nationally. Redshirt sophomore Marquis Hamilton is back after posting a 37.08 yards per return average to go with two return touchdowns as a redshirt freshman. Hamilton missed qualifying as the national leader by one kickoff return.

HEAD COACH Dane DamronThird Season

Dane Damron will enter his third season at the helm of the football program at UVa-Wise in 2018. In his first two seasons, he has guided the program to its first winning record since 2008 while posting an over-all record of 11-11. It marks the first time the program has been .500 or better over a two-year span since the team posted a 14-8 record over the 2008 and 2009 campaigns.

Under Damron’s direction, UVa-Wise saw improve-

ment in numerous facets of the game. The Cavaliers rushed for 1,233 yards in 2016 before gaining 1,299 yards on the ground in 2017. This comes after the program posted just 767 yards on the ground in 2015. Through the air, UVa-Wise has passed for at least 2,500 yards in each of Damron’s first two seasons. In the two prior seasons, the team averaged 2,259 passing yards per game.

On defense, UVa-Wise has intercepted 15 passes in each of Damron’s first two seasons. The increased interception total has allowed the program to finish -2 and -6 in the turnover battle each season. Prior to Damron’s arrival, the Cavaliers were -23 in the turnover battle in 2015.

The turnaround has resulted in a plethora of awards for football student-athletes. Linebacker Zachary Blair earned Second-Team All-America acclaim, in addition to First-Team All-Region and First-Team All-MEC honors as a senior in 2016. Meanwhile, placekicker Trent Martin joined Blair as an all-region and all-conference pick while tailback Carlton Griffith and defensive back Ed Kargbo earned All-MEC Honorable Mention acclaim that same season.

Last fall, offensive lineman Will White, linebacker Donavan Mon-tague, Kargbo, defensive back Andre Hamilton and kick returner Marquis Hamilton were named All-MEC Second-Team honorees.

Hamilton returned two kicks for a touchdown while averaging 37.1 yards per return, he finished one kick return shy of qualify-ing as the national leader in the category.

In the classroom, Montague was named CoSIDA Academic All-District. The linebacker posted a 3.57 grade point average as a biology major and was inducted into the school’s elite Darden Society.

Named the fourth head football coach in school history in De-cember of 2015, Damron came to the College after a seven-year stint at Eastern Kentucky University.

With the Colonels, Damron spent five years as the team’s offensive coordinator. A 22-year coaching veteran, he has been known for his offensive prowess. In his final season at EKU, Damron’s of-fense set a NCAA FCS record for offensive snaps in a game with 123 against Murray State. In 2012, the Colonels averaged more than 200 rushing yards and 200 passing yards per game. The Colonels rushed for at least 1,700 yards in each of Damron’s five years directing the offense.

During Damron’s tenure as offensive coordinator, EKU posted at least six wins in all five seasons he oversaw the offense. The Colonels tallied eight wins in 2012 before posting nine victories in 2014. Overall, Damron’s teams recorded 69 wins and 47 losses during his tenure.

Damron began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at EKU in 1994. Following a stint at Morehead State, he became the offensive coordinator at George Jenkins High School in Lake-land, Florida. Later, he moved on to Lake Gibson High School in Lakeland where the school reached previously unchartered waters on the football field. The Braves won their first playoff game in school history and advanced to the regional finals in each of Damron’s last two seasons as head coach.

Following his time in Florida, the coach returned to his native state of Kentucky to become the head coach at Boyd County High School in Ashland, Kentucky. Damron’s track record of success continued with the Lions as they won a playoff game in three consecutive seasons. The coach returned to the collegiate ranks in 2007 when he accepted the head coaching position at Kentucky Christian University. The 2008 season marked the first-ever varsity football team in Kentucky Christian history.

Damron played collegiate football at Georgetown College (Ky.) where he aided the Tigers to the 1991 NAIA National Cham-pionship. A two-time All-American, the former quarterback is enshrined in Georgetown’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Damron obtained a bachelor’s degree in marketing and finance from Georgetown College before later earning a master’s degree in sport administration from Eastern Kentucky. The coach and his wife Delisha have two children – Hanna and Derek.

CoordinatorsShap Boyd

Defensive CoordinatorEntering his third season at UVa-Wise, Shap Boyd’s defense has become one of the best in the Mountain East Conference. In 2017, Boyd’s unit ranked top 25 nationally in third down defense (13th), de-fensive touchdowns (15th), tackles for loss (18th) and interceptions (22nd). Overall, opponents posted just 315.7 yards per game against the Cavaliers last fall.

In his first season, Boyd’s defense ranked second in the Mountain East Conference against the run allowing just 100.1 yards on the ground per game. Additionally, the Cavaliers were third in the MEC in getting

off the field on third down as opponents converted just 32.8 percent of third down chances.

Under Boyd’s tutelage, linebacker Zachary Blair earned Second-Team All-America accolades while defensive back Ed Kargbo garnered All-MEC Honorable Mention status in 2016 before linebacker Donavan Montague, defensive back Andre Hamilton and Kargo took home All-MEC Second-Team acclaim in 2017.

Prior to coming to UVa-Wise, Boyd spent the previous two seasons as the defensive backs and special teams coach at Southeastern University (Fla.).

While with the Fire, the team ranked second in the NAIA in punting, and 16th in punt return yardage in 2014.

The Fire combined to record 26 interceptions, 91 pass break-ups, blocked 10 kicks and recorded three safeties during his two seasons at Southeastern.

Before Southeastern, Boyd was the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at NCAA Division III Muskingum Univer-sity of Ohio.

During his seven seasons with the Muskies, Boyd helped take a defense that was 10th in the Ohio Athletic Conference, to third in each of his final three seasons. During the 2011 campaign, Muskingum was 24th in the nation against the run.
