Ironwood Pig SanctuaryPost Office Box 35490Tucson, AZ 85740

May 2012Dear Supporter,

Eleven years ago next month we will mark the day of the arrival of Claire and Popeye, ourfirst two pigs, who are still enjoying their lives with us in our Main Field. Our front and backcovers have been dedicated to some of the early arrivals who remain with us after theseeleven years. We are proud and grateful to be able to celebrate our 11th-year anniversary. Itis only because of you that this has been possible. No matter how good our intentions are orhow much we love our pigs, our 11 years of expansion and growth would never have beenpossible had you not been with us with your financial and emotional support making us aviable sanctuary for so many hundreds of pigs over these years.

Hundreds and hundreds of pigs have come to us during these 11 years. Most will live outtheir lives with us and a few will go to new homes. We have given each the one gift we allneed, a home. A place where no harm will come to them. Where food is an everydayoccurrence, bedding surrounds them on cold nights and no one sleeps in the rain. Whereswimming pools and mud wallows are plentiful in the hot summers. It’s so little and yet it iseverything to these pigs, some arriving with bones sticking out of malnourished bodies orhooves so long they can barely walk or pigs so fat they have labored breathing and eyes thatare no longer useful, hidden behind rolls of fat. We take them all and we give them a home, love, security and a routine they can depend on. It’s what we do and who we are. The linebetween us and them is only a formality. We share every day as though it were their last orour last, knowing that one day it will be and that we have done our utter best at being there tocare for them.

Sincerely,

Mary C. SchanzPresident & Co-Founder

PS We recently rescued Olivia and Charlotte, two youngrowdy females who lived in a small pen with no shelterand minimal shade and only one small blanket to protectthem from the rain, wind and cold of the winter. We wereonce again reminded of the urgent need for our services and why we continue after 11 yearsto provide a home for these pigs in need.

ou may have read aboutme and my love, Petunia,in the last newsletter. She

and I live in the backyard of oneof the houses here at thesanctuary. Every day we get to goout into the “Big Yard,” which isthe area around all the houses and

the outbuildings. It’s a huge spacewith lots of desert things toexplore and places to go. Donnalikes to use the term “goingmarveling” which she picked upfrom a story her preacher toldabout a southern family from backin the old days that would go outmarvelin’ after Sunday dinner. They would take a walk throughthe country and just examine allthe wonderful things that naturehas to offer. I absolutely lovegoing out marvelin’ in the BigYard and have many favoritespots that I like to visit each day.Petunia generally stays by thesteps at the Visitor Center, but Ihave things to check up on. Comeon, go marvelin’ with me!

The first stop is the Visitor Center. Not only are the stairs there agreat place to rub your backside, but people come in and out of

there all day carrying food andtreats. Sometimes they drop stuff(sort of on purpose!) or give me abite of their apple or share someother goodie with me. If thingsare quiet there, I know another hotspot for some grub. Follow me!

There’s this cool guy namedWillie that brings a truckload offruits, vegetables and bread fourdays a week. He always gives mesomething good to eat and talks tome. I like to hang around here fora bit and chat with the staff and

volunteers that cut up theproduce. They’re all real nice! But the snacks are limited (Mary’srule!) and I’ve got other duties toattend to.

Next I’m going to mosey overto…… Wait a sec, let me explainmy favorite word there, mosey. I

never just plain walk anywhereand don’t even think of asking meto run or even hurry. I just mosey. What a great word! And what agreat life I have getting to moseyand marvel every day! Soanyway, I’m moseying over to thebarn to check out the stack ofpools. Hey, these weren’t hereyesterday. It must be getting hotagain if they’re putting out thepools. Time for some water play!

Oh, and look over there in thelittle red barn where they put pigsthat have had surgery and need aspecial place to recover. Belle isin there today. I heard she gotspayed yesterday. I’ll check inand see how she’s feeling, giveher a word of encouragement. A

little side benefit for me….the Tpost here is a great spot to rub myface and head. Ahhh, that feelsgood!

through the fence on a regularbasis. Taryn has some other pigsthat live in her yard, but Ziggy ismy favorite. Let’s swing over tothe backyard of the Visitor Centerand see what’s happening. Jakealways talks to me but he’s kindaold and doesn’t come out of his

shelter much so I don’t hangaround for long. Oh, hey, check itout! Somebody dumped a waterbowl through the fence and madea mud puddle! Nothing like alittle roll in the mud to cool a guyoff. But that always makes meitchy so a little side trip to Benand Mary’s stairs is now in order.Great spot to rub and scratch for afew minutes!

Let’s meander over (and youthought I was going to moseyagain!) to the Visitor Center andsee what Petunia is doing. Stillasleep under the stairs. Nothingelse happening so I’ll just keepmoving. I like to go over to the

individual pens and talk to thepigs in there. There is alwayssomebody out in the exercise yardto chat with. Ooh, today thosefour cute girls are out there! Theyall want to talk to me. Now thatwas worth the trip over here! Ialways go up and down the wholelength of the fence to see whateverybody is doing. Some of thepigs will get up and come chatwith me but others don’t feel too

good which is why they’re in apen now so they won’t come over.I still feel I need to check up onthem anyway. Let’s see…..Ethelis asleep in the sun, Kamama isgetting some meds or somethingfrom Taryn, don’t see Lucilleanywhere, Missy must be in herhouse, Piglet is ignoring me. Ah,kind of quiet today.

The workshop area is anotherplace that is a must every day. There is usually somebody overhere building stuff or repairing

Now it’s around the back of Tim’strailer and over to the place wherethe old folks live. Ooh, now

here’s what I’m talking about withthe marvelin’….check out thewildflowers I found! A fresh tastytreat along with a littlegrass…..yummy! But back ontrack to the old folks. These pigsrarely get up and visit with me butthat’s okay, I’ll just mosey on past(there’s that word again!) and go

see what Taryn’s pigs are up totoday. She has this big pig namedZiggy that’s pretty cool. He and Ido some chatting and chomping

things or just taking a break in theshade. I can usually get a few petsand back scratches over here, maybe rub my face onsomebody’s leg. And if you goaround back where the grain isstored, sometimes there is somethat got spilled on the ground soyou can get a snack. In thesummer there’s a mud wallow andpool under the tree back there too.A great spot to rest for a minutebefore finishing my rounds.

At this point, I’ve made the circuitaround the property. Sometimes,if it’s not too hot, I’ll moseyaround the loop again to double-

check everything before headinghome. You never know, I mighthave missed something the firsttime around. If I’m tired, I mightgo lay down by the stairs withPetunia and hang out with her awhile. Or maybe I’ll just go rootaround under the creosote bushes, eat hay scraps off the top of thewagon or play in the dirt pile. It

won’t be too much longer beforesomebody will be calling myname wanting me to go backhome with Petunia so another pigcan come out and have a turn inthe Big Yard. I’m never quiteready to go, so I’ll mosey along atmy own pace to squeeze out everysecond as long as I can. And Imight just see something to stopand marvel at before going home. There’s always something

interesting to see and do aroundhere. Well, thanks for going marvelin’with me! Hope you enjoyed it asmuch as I did!

First came the construction of theshelters complete with carpetfloors and doors. Once those wereplaced inside the area, Julian andSam put up the hog panel fencingon a cold windy day with rain andsleet. On another day Jonny builta shade ramada and dug out awallow while Lenny put in anautomatic waterer with a hose bibconnection. The shelters wereshifted into place and shade clothwas put in above those. Blanketswere added as the nights were stilla little chilly. Everything was inplace and ready for piggies!

We were concerned about KingCharles learning whereeverything is….being blind wouldmake things harder for him. Wehave had a few other blind pigsthat have done just fine but theKing is special! There are timeswhen he has difficulty getting upby himself. He has learned tomoan until someone rushes overto help him roll over. His newhome is more centrally located, sowe can hear him easier and get to

room for King Charles. So wedecided to build him his ownplace. We didn’t want him to bealone and just happened to havethree other pigs in need ofaccommodations like his. Pigletand Elizabeth are two older pigsfrom our Main Field that are tooarthritic to handle a large field anylonger. Freddie is only one and ahalf years old but suffers fromneurological problems that make

walking unstable at times, histongue hangs out and he is,well.....a special needs child.

ou may rememberreading about KingCharles on the Sponsor

Page in the March 2011newsletter. He was found theprevious summer along the side ofthe road overheated, dehydratedand dragging his back leg. Somepeople took him home and calledus for help. King Charles hasbeen with us since. His leg was x-rayed and found to have beenbadly broken and healedincorrectly but too long ago to berepaired. He was overweight and

blind. The King, as we call him,had been living in one of ourholding pens all this time becauseof his disabilities. Well, he lostsome weight, learned to getaround with his bum leg and wasready for a change.

We have two areas built for pigsthat are in that stage of their liveswhere their physical handicapsmake it unsafe to live in even thesmaller Assisted Living Fields. Most are arthritic and unable toget around much. Both of thoseareas are full and there was no

And so the first day ended with allfour pigs happy and content.Over the course of the next few

days there was a little bit ofgrumbling and raised hackles attimes as they got to know oneanother, but overall it was a veryeasy transition for all of them. Weare happy for all four of them butparticularly excited about seeingKing Charles out with other pigsenjoying some space and hisfreedom. Charles made his grandappearance. We had to load himinto a crate and bring him over inthe ATV. Freddie, Piglet andElizabeth arrived soon after. Theexploration began….new pigs, new space, new plants and newhouses….so much to find andlearn about. It turned out great! The King wandered all over theplace, napped in the shade, playedin the mud, then walked back overto the large shelter that was builtfor him. It was as if he somehowknew which house was supposedto be his! He spent most of theafternoon napping by his mudwallow.

Late in the afternoon Sam andSarah came by with juice and theevening medications. Freddie andPiglet were up and anxious to gettheir treat and juice. Sam had toroll the King up on his feet so thathe could drink his juice. As a wayto say thanks, King Charlessnapped at Sam with a remindernot to stand so close. The Kingneeds his space! Elizabeth wasburrowed down within a group ofcreosote bushes but poked herhead out to drink some juice. After everyone was satisfied theysettled back down for yet anothernap.

him more quickly. We all have aspecial attachment to the Kingand have high hopes that he will

adjust to and come to love his newplace. Will he get along withElizabeth and Piglet? WillFreddie, who wants to beeveryone’s friend, be okay withKing Charles who is more thantwice his size? Will the King beable to maneuver from his shelterto the mud wallow? So many

concerns and questions that onlytime will tell. We were likenervous new moms bringing thebaby home for the first time! Finally, on March 29th, King

Daily Medical IssuesPage 10 IRONWOOD PIG SANCTUARY Issue 46

www.ironwoodpigs.org [email protected]

ften our days at thesanctuary are filled withpigs’ medical issues.

Some days are consumed withmedical needs while other daysdon’t have any new ones. Thereare certain medical proceduresthat we deal with every day suchas putting ointment in an eye orcleaning a healing wound. However, there are othersituations that arise that requiremore attention such as abscessesor ripped ears from a pig fight.

Normal protocol for whensomeone notices a problem with apig is to announce it on the walkietalkie so that Mary, Donna or Ican assess the situation. Wealways have three differentmedical kits ready for use forminor needs, but we may alsoneed to gather injections or thefoot wrapping kit.

Once we have the necessary itemsto deal with the situation we makesure we have enough people to

help. Depending on the demeanorof the pig needing medicalattention and the type of issue athand, it could take up to fivepeople to take care of one pig.

If the pig needing medicalattention isn’t tame or does notlike attention from people, it canbe difficult to help them. When

this is the case we often have afew of the staff members gatherboards so that we can corner thepig to doctor them. Occasionallywe need to get the pig on theirback for certain medicalprocedures. These types oftreatments include wrappinginjured feet or lancing and/orflushing abscesses.

Roy was recently brought into ourpens to have his abscess lancedand treated. Roy does notappreciate being touched by us, soautomatically we knew we’d needa few people. Also, we tend tohave to board or flip any pig that

we have to lance to make surethere aren’t any suddenmovements. Furthermore, we liketo have a few people on hand forabscesses as there needs to besomeone available to hand themedical tools to the persontreating the abscess. We willcontinue to flush the abscess afew more times in the first weekafter it is lanced or broken toensure that it is clean and drainingwell. Roy was a trooper and isalready healed and back in hisfield.

On occasion we have more tameand manageable pigs that needmedical attention. In theseinstances it usually just takes oneperson to work with the pig.Often times we have a pig after asurgery that doesn’t feel up toeating. We try to syringehomemade milkshakes to getnutrition into them. If they stillwon’t take the milkshake we mayhave to give them subcutaneousfluids. Frances is one pig thatneeded both of these recently. She was kind enough to let uspoke her belly to give her fluids.

Another situation that involvespoking a pig is giving theminjections. The reasons we maybe giving a pig an injectioninclude pain after surgery or aninjury or we may be giving aninjectable antibiotic for differentillnesses. When we are givinginjections it may be as easy asgiving them the shot then givingthem a cookie treat or they may bemore difficult and we need toboard them. Rufus is a rare onewhen it comes to shots. He looksforward to his weekly shot as he

gets cookie treats while we pokehim. He is currently receiving

Adequan which is a jointsupplement. Jesse wasn’t goingto submit as easily as Rufus; herequired a board. We would needto get Jesse out of his house togive him his antibiotic injectionwhen he came down with an innerear infection. After cornering himwith a board he wasn’t muchtrouble. Of course he received atreat when we were done.

There are also a few medicalprocedures that people may notrealize we perform. They areoften times more for maintenance. These types of things include

cleaning face folds on heavierpigs, cleaning ears and eyes andapplying ointment to dry orcracked skin. A few of our pigsare missing ears from lifeexperiences before the sanctuary.Ellie is one of these pigs. Oftentimes her ear hole, as we call it,gets dirty and she tilts her head, letting us know. She’s really goodabout letting us clean it out andgoing on about her day. We alsohave a few other pigs with ears

that seem to fill up with dirt quiteregularly. Margarita, Hero andZiggy are just a few of those pigs.Hero and Ziggy enjoy their earcleaning moments whileMargarita has to be in the mood.

Whether it is a small or largeissue, we make sure to do our bestto ensure everyone’s needs arecared for every day. We keep amedical log so we can look backon a pig’s medical history quickly.A lot of this is behind-the-sceneswork, but it’s very important andwe strive to keep every pigcomfortable.

ince this isour 11thAnniversary

issue, both our frontand back coverfeature some of ourold pigs that havebeen with us allthese years.

Desiree and her mother Madeline were picked up by Benand me when we were volunteering. We got a call fromthe Desert Museum that two pigs were running loose rightacross the road in the desert. We were finally able to coaxDesiree into a carrier just at dark. We were not yet openso they both went to what is now our Annex. Desiree waslater injured, so we brought her to our house where shestayed until we opened. She settled right in and made pigfriends but has never really wanted our companionship yetloves to stand and stretch for a treat from us.

Harley joined us on 10/27/01. He was about 5 years oldthen, so he is well into years now. He loved his freedomsince he spent a great deal of his early years in a crate inan apartment. For a long time he lived alone in the fields, but over time he worked his way into the herd and now

Front & Back Coverharlotte is little butmighty. I first met herwhen I was

volunteering at a sanctuaryknown as Pigs*A*Lot, nowour Annex. Some people cameand dumped her off since theywanted a baby pig. In fact, they wanted one of hers whenshe had them. Yes, she waspregnant. My guess was she

was young, maybe a few years old. At that time I did notknow much about how far along she might be, but we puther in a small pen knowing that she would no doubt getbeat up in the general area with all the other pigs. Notlong after that when I returned to volunteer, I was toldthat her babies had been born and they all froze. I don’t

know the details, whether she rejected them or it just wastoo cold for them to survive without the proper care.Soon after that we put Grandma Moses in the pen withher since Grandma was quite old and in need ofprotection from the other pigs. Each time we tried tointroduce Charlotte into the herd she had a great amountof difficulty. Very soon after Ironwood opened in 2001we brought both Grandma and Charlotte to Ironwood. We put them both in our newly formed special needsfield, but Charlotte was much too feisty for that field sowe moved her into our already established Main field. There she has lived nearly 11 years now and has alwaysstayed right inside the gate in the group shelter with hercircle of friends. Even in her senior years she is stillfeisty. She has never warmed up to us really but hasalways seemed content with her life and her place withher little herd in the group shelter.

lives under one of our larger shelters that house small herdsof pigs, and as pictured here, he enjoys his time with hiscompanions.

Taylor was a young stray boar who we picked up atAnimal Control on 5/27/02. He was pretty well socializedso one has to wonder why he became a stray that no onewanted back. He is a quiet boy that never makes a fuss, somany people don’t take a lot of notice of him. But he isspecial to me and I always try to give him a pet whenpassing through the field. He has a lot of good pig friendsto keep him company.

Arnold was a young fellow when we picked him up on8/19/01. The family actually brought him to our home afew months earlier then took him home because they justcouldn’t leave him. However, he was getting bigger andhaving issues with their dog, so the decision to give him upwas made by them. He was big and young and full ofhimself, so he became the patriarch of the field for manyyears. These days he is just sort of one of the gang as hehas become a senior. They have all grown up together andare growing old together here at Ironwood. All strangerswith their stories who have come together to become life-long buddies because there is an Ironwood.

Noteworthy things I’ve done:1. I have lost a lot of weight since moving here (and it has not been easy or fun!).2. I have been a very good friend to Ziggy (I love her so much!).3. I have learned to go into a pen at breakfast time and only eat my food instead of everyone else’s

(you have no idea how hard that is!).4. I am sure there are other things, but I can’t think of them right now.
