aMeriCan eyes oPPorTUniTies in Brazil We've always seen Europeans coming to Brazil, but not Americans. Now they are seeing opportunities with the economic growing of the “samba” country. According to the Brazilian Labor Ministry, 7,550 American citizens were granted a work visa in Brazil in 2010, up from 5,590 the previous year and more than double the number in 2006. The majority of Brazil's legal foreign workers come from the U.S and the reasons are clear. The U.S has been struggling to recover economic growth and unemployment is running at some 9%. By contrast, Brazil's economic performance in recent years has been strong - 7.55% in 2010. According to data from employment agency Manpower, published in the Economist, 64% of Brazilian employers find it difficult to fill job vacancies.

laTin aMeriCan eConoMy and ProsPeriTyBrazil’s strong economic growth is creating a surge in demand for goods from nations throughout Latin America, and it’s also helping to lift those economies amid relatively weaker import demand from United States. Historically, the economic fortunes of much of Latin America were tethered to U.S economic growth and the concomitant import demand that is produced. Those ties still hold to a degree, but they are becoming frayed. Now, a rapidly growing Brazil, flush with foreign reserves, investment capital and burgeoning middle class, has emerged as a key importer of goods from Latin America, positively boosting those economies.

Brazil is CaTChing ToUrisM’s Big fish It is reeling in the sportsmen who practice one of the most popular sports in the world, showing that it has one of the largest river networks on the planet with 55,457 km/square of inland waters, a coastline of 7,367 km bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, and no less than 1,500 species for the delight of amateur fishing. Of course, the presence of foreign fisherman is not recent and the capture of the blue marlin for example, attract for a while now, anglers from all over the world to the Brazilian coast. Likewise, expeditions to the waters of the Pantanal in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul are constant and increasing for the infinity of fish with untranslatable indigenous names, abundance, and flavor.

CreaTiviTy in fashion The Brazilian fashion industry has experienced a solid growth during the last years, has undergone transformation and become fine-tuned with the main world markets. The fame of top models such as Gisele Bundchen and Adriana Lima as well as top Brazilian stylists and designers has put the spotlight on the publicity work of firms connected with the fashion world and lent added zest to the efforts of Brazilian fashion industry to broaden the country’s commercial horizons. The Brazilian industry has found solutions to ensure that local creativity matches international quality standards. A tremendous international success example is the “Havaianas” Sandals.

Brazil’s Innovation: Valentine’s Day for SinglesUnlike many places in the world, Valentine's

Day in Brazil is not celebrated on February 14, the anniversary of St. Valentine, the saint of couples. Because it is very close to Carnival (which unites and separates some couples), Valentine’s Day was moved to the tupiniquim calendar.

In 1949 publicist John Doris developed an advertising campaign for the no longer used holiday, Clipper Stores proclaiming the eve of the “Matchmaker Saint”, St. Anthony‘s day, the date for couples to exchange gifts. With the sensational slogan, "It's not just kissing that proves love” the campaign exploded and established what is known as the third most lucrative date for Brazilian stores, only behind Christmas and Mother's Day.

Valentine's Day in Brazil is June 12 and can be a chore for those who have a companion or even for those who don’t. For those in love, it is synonymous with giving and receiving gifts, going to restaurants and having a night “mucho caliente". What about for those who do not have a boyfriend or girlfriend? "

In 2009 Brazil saw the emergence of the “Singles on Valentines’ Day Movement” which takes place between the last week of May and first week of June. In the first year it occurred in two cities. In Sao Paulo the event was held at Ibirapuera Park (the largest green area of São Paulo) and in Rio de Janeiro there were a gathering of people at Copacabana beach. In both events there was a lot of music with themes from the carnival and, of course,

romantic themes as well. The events, sponsored by "marketing partners" from online dating sites "Par Parfeito" and "Match", are growing every year making this one more option for those seeking their "soul mate," or for those who just want to have fun. In the first year, the respective movement website had 30,000 subscribers in just two weeks.

According to the website’s comments, it can be concluded that the major complaint of women is that men only want sex, while men complain that women are only looking for handsome, athletic men. The movement has also made it to the social networking web of Twitter, Facebook and Orkut. Once again, a charming creation or at least, a great initiative "Made in Brazil."

Find Your Hook. Communicate your Message. Make your Mark.

*Guerilla Marketing * Online Marketing * PR * Printing * Publishing * Video Production

Our best strategy is the fusion of traditional marketing with PR and communication

tools. Marketing is a proved specialist activity that can influences the success of any organization while the “New Media” essence is producing effective, interesting ways to increase consumer exposure for your brand. Our formula is getting the impact and reach combined with knowledge, low cost and effectiveness.

MARKETING COMMUNICATION – Reach the media outlets announcing something that the outlets may find particularly newsworthy with press-releases production and distribution. Take the opportunity to reach massive members of editors and get a little more “ink” or press mentions in different formats (*PR efforts).

ONLINE MARKETING – Attract more visitors for your company website with SEO strategies as search engine submission, directory submission, online rich content and others techniques, or attract more “Funs & Likes” for your Facebook Page with our custom layout, content and maintenance service.

EMAIL MARKETING – Reach out our over 10,000 online subscribers with our weekly eNews or through an exclusive eBlast designed just for your product or service. * Through Soul Brasil magazine, reaching Brazilians and Brazilian culture lovers.

GUERRILLA MARKETING – Reaching people in “experimental ways’ with unusual strategies. Did you hear about a team of beautiful Dutch

girls in a game of Holland in the World Cup 2010? The girl’s beauty in a strategic location (a full stadium with many people from the media) exposure the girls thought different media channels. The little detail: all the girls was wearing orange sexy dress (color of the Dutch team), but it had logos from a Beer manufacturer. Guerrilla marketing consists of more street level, out-of-home event marketing. We have creative ideas as the focus here is reaching your audience in a way that is exciting unexpected and memorable. Also, direct impact distribution services for any printing material you may have using our street team.

EVENT MARKETING – Instead investing in the traditional advertising media, you can

consider sponsoring an event that appeals to your target market. It can reflect the immediate association of your brand with the specific audience that enjoys these specifics events. Why companies like Budweiser invest heavy in sports? We assist you from consulting to connections and/or production.

RESPONSIBILITy SOCIAL MARKETING – Adding a cause-related tie-in for your business and giving back to the community is the key. In other words, it is matching your brand with a desiring organization. According to a 2008 study by the University of British Columbia and the Harvard Business Scholl, researchers found that people who spend their money on others or in form of charitable contributions “significantly greater happiness”.

What does this mean for you? Consulting and connections is available.

MARKETING RESEARCH – Cultural background affects how consumers process advertising messages, and advertisers recognize the purchasing power of the diverse ethnic groups in the U.S. There are over 1 million Brazilians in U.S and as Brazilians; we specialize in this growing and potential specific market. We believe that to survive in this competitive marketplace, business owners (small or larger) should be able to target many lucrative subcultures with effective cross-cultural or culture-specific advertising campaigns. Also is available business assistance from/to Brazil as well as translations and versions to Portuguese for your business website or

business proposal by our team of editors (not only translators!).

FUSION MARKETING – It is not “barter” which is characterized by the exchange of goods and services. Instead, fusion marketing is the mutual request for more profits. It’s a partnership more than a buyer-seller or trader-trader relationship. It allows you to spread your marketing word while sharing the costs and the profits. We love partnership ideas and sharing profits in some way.

Our Business is to Promote your Business…our Concept is to Provide you & your Biz many

Que Grau de Importância em Marketing tem o Facebook?Lindenberg Junior

The Walls Between UsCory Bunyard

My initial interest in Brazil began with a conversation in a taxi in Buenos Aires when a cab driver shared with me that “Here in BA we have no money and we stay sad and smoke cigarettes. In Brazil they have no money and they take of their clothes and dance on the beach.” Brazil definitely appeared to be more my kind of place. Within a year I was on a flight to Rio from LA. My initial plans to travel the country for three weeks and attend a yoga teacher certification in Garopaba (state of Santa Catarina) had been squashed by lack of funds and fear of more expenses than I had expected. I wasn’t discouraged since, months before boarding the plane I had met someone online. He had the name of an Angel, but I’ll keep that private. My intention was to meet someone to show me Rio, but I had found more. Over months of internet and phone conversation we had decided that he would meet me at the airport since I was arriving at night and take me to his apartment where I could decide the next day if I would stay or go on to my hostel depending on how meeting in person developed.

I never left his apartment. It was love. My first experience of Brazil was nothing like most tourists since I lived the life of a resident in Niteroi in a small two-bedroom apartment near a favela. I had little money to spend on tourist excursions and I spent my days accompanying him to work, walking or working out in Icarai, taking the bus through the favela to Itacaoatiara, seeing museums on free days, strolling in shopping malls when the heat was unbearable, eating lunch with him and

his co-workers in local restaurants, shopping at Sendas and Hortifruit all by bus and foot. I saw a few other Americans the one time we went to Ipanema. I found the beaches in Rio crowded and chaotic in comparison to our little paradises in Niteroi.

I returned to the US as planned, but with intent to return as soon as possible in hopes of beginning the process of living together in Brazil. Having thought it over and weighed out our options as a gay couple and our financial and work realities, we resolved that it was more realistic for me to move to Brazil than for him to come to the U.S. It was what I wanted anyway. I returned only three months later with plans of staying at least three months. We would figure it out. We needed to be together and see where this was going. I gave a massage here and there with a friend for money and helped at the design office on occasion. I had paid some bills in advance. I would rarely wander alone in the beginning for fear of safety and lack of language skills. I had learned some Portuguese before my first trip and having learned Spanish before I had found it less challenging than some had said, but I was far from fluent. He spoke some English and we managed. I think it was good in the beginning since we couldn’t really have petty arguments for lack of words and they would always end in, “It’s ok, I love you.”

I had to return to the US again. We had learned of the possibility of a Uniao Estavel, or Stable Union. It had been successfully used by a few same-sex couples for immigration of the foreign partner, but it required proof of a

stable relationship lasting two years or more in which both parties could prove not only the duration of the relationship, but their financial dependence upon each other much like a Common-Law Marriage in the U.S. We were in no position to prove either or to continue with him supporting me and I wasn’t quite ready to let my credit card debts go, which were equal to more than our rent in monthly payments.

I continued to go back and forth over four years total, each time with a little more progress financially. Money was not our only challenge. Cultural adjustment had become much more of a reality once I started to truly ‘live’ there up to six months at a time stretching the limits of my tourist visa, doing translation work on the side and living frugally. The only splurge in all those years was a romantic trip to Buzios for our second anniversary and we still took the bus. I had left everything I knew behind. I had no friends, no job, little language and little money.

It was completely unrealistic but we believed in it. At times I would lose it emotionally and begin to hate it. The poverty, the difficulty in doing things that are so simple in the US, the lack of work, the time we got robbed and the fact that he was the only person I could share everything with wore on our relationship. This, along with the challenge of being a gay couple with no simple marriage certificate to resolve our situation, eventually wore us thin, especially him.

Waiting in Kansas at my mother’s house to finally move permanently, and for him to return from a work project in Angola with dollars to get a new place and finally begin the process of our “Uniao Estavel”, I received an email from him, for the first time all in Portuguese, explaining to me that he just couldn’t do it. The last time I left was too much for him

emotionally and he didn’t know if he could take anymore. The relationship had become a burden and he didn’t believe in it like before. He was even seeing a therapist. It was a rock in my heart, but deep inside I understood and I suppose I saw it coming. I wasn’t sure if I was more disappointed in the relationship ending or that I wasn’t moving to Brazil.

People accept the walls we’ve built between our nations because they haven’t experienced how ridiculous these walls are when you just want to be with someone you love. Recently the Supreme Court of Brazil legalized the “Uniao Estavel” for same sex couples, a great triumph. I remember thinking that while the U.S. was chasing down individual terrorists, Brazil was winning the battle for love. Recently, my ex and I have been talking more and I am planning to visit later this year.

Opções de Educação nos EUA para Brasileiros

Rebecca Carvalho

BeWare of BarBeCUe MeaTsMaking a BBQ is a mania among Brazilians, Americans, Argentineans, etc, especially during summertime, but bewares as barbecued meats may cause cancer. The danger lie in the way the meat cooks over a flame. When juices cook in meat, heterocyclic amines (Has) form. The hotter the flame and the more charred the meat, the more HAs form. Also, when drippings hit the heat source, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) form, rise with the smoke and are deposited on the food. A good alternative: next time, microwave the meat for 1 minute; drain the juices, than barbecue it. If not microwave is available, try to place the meats initially in a low fire or far around the hottest spot.

loWer Blood sUgarRecent research shows that drink apple cider vinegar helps lower blood sugar. It is so good for your system that you should try to get some down. How? First thing in the morning

splash some into a glass of water and drink up. The vitamins, pectin, and potassium all work together to give your many benefits. So don’t turn your nose up at this oft-overlooked miracle from nature.

avoid Bed BreaThTalking about “Apples”, you can use this “Adam & Eve” favorites to escape from the terrible bed breath. Apples are proved to be a very efficient natural remedy for those with this kind of problem. Of course, clean your tongue with a tongue scraper every day (or a plastic teaspoon with the bowl pointing down) or chewing gun to promote saliva flow is very helpful.

food for ageless BeaUTyAccording to studies published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, skin can absorb up to 60 percent of what we apply to it. So, feeding skin high-quality ingredients may be as critical as the food we eat. It’s common

knowledge that drinking water is essential for overall health and radiant skin. But, make sure you add this highly recommended foods to your daily routine (or sometimes at least!): Avocados, Cucumber, Blueberries, Dark Chocolate, Dark Leaf Greens, Cruciferous Vegetables, Omega Oils, Green Tea and yes…Red Wine (one glass only!).

CyCling & sexMale bicyclists who ride up to 100 miles a week may become impotent repeated thrusting down on the foot pedals pounds the groin against the seat, damaging critical arteries and nerves. Initial symptoms: Numbness in the buttocks and difficulty getting an erection for a day or two. Trap: Damage may be irreversible and may not be apparent for years. Self-defense Padded bike seat and shorts…rise off the seat occasionally, especially when sprinting…ride a correctly sized bike – you should not have to shift your body on the down stroke.

Colorido e diversidade marcam o Carnaval 2011 em San FranciscoFotos: Bill Taylor

Cores, penas, música, criatividade, beleza, diversidade e, claro, muita gente.

Beauty/Beleza

Latinas Want Beauty Marketers to Speak their LanguageRecent research from Mintel suggests that

Hispanic women feel underrepresented in the beauty and personal care aisle. Over half of survey respondents said they would like to see more personal care products designed just for them and 64% would like more hair care products created specifically for Latinas. "It can be a very daunting task for companies to hone in on the specific needs of their Hispanic customers," says Leylha Ahuile, senior multicultural analyst at Mintel. "Latinas come in a variety of shades, so a wide range of products must be developed to cater to every pigment and hair type."

Hispanic women are especially concerned with the box or bottle their favorite products come

in. Eighty-one percent of Latinas surveyed report that they would like to see more personal care products with bilingual packaging. younger Hispanic women are more inclined to express a desire for bilingual packaging than their older counterparts. "Hispanic consumers often look at bilingual packaging as a way of being acknowledged and respected by a brand, not because they are unable to read English," notes Leylha Ahuile. "The lack of Spanish-language packaging has the potential to make these women feel ignored by manufacturers."

Latina women are younger than the average US female population, and 62% of the Hispanic female population has yet to enter their peak

earning years (35+). As a result, Mintel believes Latina Purchasing Power is Definitely on the Rise.

Unauthorized Immigrant Population Trends Jeffrey S. Passel and D'Vera Cohn

As of March 2010, 11.2 million unauthorized immigrants were living in the United

States, virtually unchanged from a year earlier, according to new estimates from the Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center. This stability in 2010 follows a two-year decline from the peak of 12 million in 2007 to 11.1 million in 2009 that was the first significant reversal in a two-decade pattern of growth. Unauthorized immigrants were 3.7% of the nation's population in 2010.

The number of unauthorized immigrants in the nation's workforce, 8 million in March 2010, also did not differ from the Pew Hispanic Center estimate for 2009. As with the population total, the number of unauthorized immigrants in the labor force had decreased in 2009 from its peak of 8.4 million in 2007. They made up 5.2% of the labor force.

The number of children born to at least one unauthorized-immigrant parent in 2009 was 350,000 and they made up 8% of all U.S. births, essentially the same as a year earlier. An analysis of the year of entry of unauthorized immigrants who became parents in 2009 indicates that 61% arrived in the U.S. before 2004, 30% arrived from 2004 to 2007, and 9% arrived from 2008 to 2010.

Other key points from the new report include: The decline in the population of unauthorized

immigrants from its peak in 2007 appears due mainly to a decrease in the number from Mexico, which went down to 6.5 million in 2010 from 7 million in 2007. Mexicans remain the largest group of unauthorized immigrants, accounting for 58% of the total.

The number of unauthorized immigrants decreased from 2007 to 2010 in Colorado, Florida, New york and Virginia. The combined population in three contiguous Mountain West states-Arizona, Nevada and Utah-also declined.

In contrast to the national trend, the combined unauthorized immigrant population in three contiguous West South Central states-Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas-grew from 2007 to 2010.

Although the number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. is below 2007 levels, it has tripled since 1990, when it was 3.5 million and grown by a third since 2000, when it was 8.4 million.

The estimates are based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Survey, augmented with the Pew Hispanic Center's analysis of the demographic characteristics of the unauthorized immigrant population using a "residual estimation methodology."

Although the estimates indicate trends in the size and composition of the unauthorized-immigrant population, they are not designed to answer the question of why these changes occurred. There are many possible factors. The deep recession

that began in the U.S. economy officially ended in 2009, but recovery has been slow to take hold and unemployment remains high. Immigration flows have tended to decrease in previous periods of economic distress.

The period covered by this analysis also has been accompanied by changes in the level of immigration enforcement and in enforcement strategies, not only by the federal government but also at state and local levels. Immigration also is subject to pressure by demographic and economic conditions in sending countries. This analysis does not attempt to quantify the relative impact of these forces on levels of unauthorized immigration.
