Lionel Messi became the first player in Spain to score 50 goals in a club season, helping Barcelona re-bound from its loss to Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final with a 2-0 victory over Osasuna on Saturday.Barcelona rested most regular start-ers in preparation for Wednesday’s first leg of the Champions League semifinal against Real Madrid - the third of four matches between the rivals in an 18-day span.David Villa scored his 18th goal - and first in 12 games - in the 24th minute. Messi replaced Villa in the 58th and rolled home his league-

leading 31st goal with three minutes left. With 177 goals for Barcelona in all competitions, Messi is one behind Josep Samitier for third place on the Barcelona career scoring list, trailing Cesar Rodriguez (235) and Laszlo Kubala (196).Seeking its third straight La Liga title, Barcelona extended its league unbeaten streak to 31 games and maintained an eight-point lead over second-place Real Madrid with five games remaining.Three days after hoisting its 18th do-mestic cup and first trophy in nearly three years with a 1-0 overtime

victory over Barcelona, Real Madrid returned to the Mestalla Stadium and routed Valencia 6-3.Gonzalo Higuain scored three goals, Kaka two and Karim Benzema one as Madrid became the first visiting team to score six goals at the Mestalla. Ro-berto Soldado, Jonas and Jordi Alba scored for Valencia.

Pep Guardiola suffered his first defeat against Real Madrid as Barcelona lost 1-0 in the Copa del Rey final following a towering Cristiano Ronaldo header in extra time. The Barca coach was diplomatic with his response to the match and speaking in the post-match press conference, he said: “This game means that there is a winner and a loser, nothing more or nothing less.“We will have to pick ourselves up because there is not much time until the end of the year and we need to see how it ends.“It is always better to win than lose, but

we have to recover. We are in a good po-sition in the league and we have to make sure we keep going.“We have our next league game on Sat-urday and I hope people recognize how much we have left to fight for.”Guardiola took the opportunity to thank the fans and their behavior despite the result.“We have to digest this. They played a good first-half; we improved in the second but with a team like this [Real Madrid] this can happen,” he continued.“They have played directly, won the sec-ond balls and made it a very fast game. I think we played well. I know that sounds

bad to say after losing but we had a good second-half and played well in extra time, but it’s never easy when you are playing against such strong players.“We must continue and not become dis-united. We must win in the league first, and then try and get to Wembley [for the Cham-pions League final].”

Al Ahli has fired former Leeds and Aston Villa manager David O’Leary as its coach after less than one season in the UAE league. The pre-season hiring of the former Ireland and Arsenal defender was part of a bid by the Dubai club to draw in larger crowds. The team appointed by FIFA to run the Bosnia-Herzegovina football federation after it was suspended from international competition hopes to have the ban lifted by the end of May.The federation was suspended on April 1 after refusing to comply with a FIFA demand to replace its three-member leadership with a single president.Ivica Osim, the head of the team, said Wednesday that delegates will be able to vote on the issue on May 26.Osim says those who had previously rejected the change have ‘’had time to think about the consequences.’’The federation has accumulated debts of $1.6 million ($2.3 million) over the past 10 years and would face bankruptcy without FIFA and UEFA funding comprising half of its budget.

India coach Bob Houghton has resigned after five years in charge. The All India Football Federation said Saturday the departure was “due to personal reasons.’’The English coach, whose contract was due to run to 2013, helped India qualify for the 2011 Asian Cup earlier this year after a gap of 24 years. During the tournament he repeatedly called on the country’s football federation to overhaul its domestic infrastructure.Houghton had faced allegations of racism from a prominent Indian referee, which Houghton denied. The allegations led to a disciplinary hearing by the AIFF.“Based on the report of the inquiry committee, the AIFF feels that in the absence of any definitive and concrete evidence the allegations against Mr. Houghton cannot be sustained and therefore the AIFF agrees to withdraw all charges and allegations made against him,’’ the statement said.Houghton had been facing the inquiry from a three-man panel after referee Dinesh Nair alleged that he had been racially abused during an international friendly against Yemen last year. The AIFF said he was leaving of his own accord.“Mr. Houghton, for his personal reasons, does not wish to continue working in India and in his position as the head coach of the Indian football team,’’ the AIFF said. “The parties have mutually agreed to terminate the employment contract of Mr. Houghton.“AIFF thanks Mr. Houghton for his services to the Indian football team for the last about five years and Mr. Houghton expresses his gratitude to the AIFF for having given him an opportunity to coach the Indian football team and wishes the Indian football team all the very best for its future endeavors.’’

UEFA president Michel Platini has admitted making a mistake by setting a high price for tickets for the Champions League final.Tickets for Wembley’s showpiece event on May 28 start at 176 pounds, and many fans feel they have been marginalised by UEFA’s decision.Speaking at a trophy handover ceremony on Wednesday, Platini admitted the price may have been too high, but said it was tough to please everyone with such high demand.“I already responded that it was a mistake,” Platini said.“It was not good but take care, it is not easy to decide the price of the ticket in the final of the Champions League because now we have received 200,000 requests for this price of ticket.”“Now, if you want to buy this ticket off the black market, it is 10 times the price that we decided.”“So, it is not so easy. Perhaps in the future we will have a new category for families that are less expensive, but if they put that on the black market….that is not easy.”The Champions League trophy will be on display at 13 sites across London between now and May 21, in-cluding Fulham’s Craven Cottage, Trafalgar Square and Heathrow airport. There is still a chance the trophy could remain in England after the final, with Premier League club Man-chester United one of four teams still alive in the competition.

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has said that “one day’’ he will return to work at Inter Milan, but that it won’t be next season.

The Portuguese won the Champions League, two Italian titles and the Italian Cup in two years at Inter, before he left for Madrid in 2010.

His successor Rafael Benitez was replaced by Leonardo after less than six months in charge.Leonardo only has a contract for this season and the Italian press has speculated that Mourin-

ho could return when it runs out.“Please stop talking about Mourinho being at Inter next season,’’ Mourinho was quoted

as saying in Saturday’s Gazzetta dello Sport. “Myself and Inter will always be linked, and one day we will work together again. But not next year.

“Inter has a fantastic president and superb staff. Let them and Leo work togeth-er in peace so that they can finish this season strongly and prepare properly

for next season. I will stay with Madrid next season.’’On Wednesday Mourinho won his first trophy since taking over Real

Madrid, when Cristiano Ronaldo scored an extratime winner in a 1-0 victory over Barcelona to claim the Copa del Rey.

Barcelona is eight points clear in La Liga with six games remaining and the sides will also meet in the Champions

League semifinals.Last season Mourinho’s Inter Milan beat Barcelona

3-2 in the last four to reach the final in Madrid.“They’ve been asking me if this defeat has

ended Barcelona’s hegemony, but what hegemony?’’ Mourinho asked. “It is

a good team, but at the moment is only the Spanish champion.

Someone else is the Euro-pean champion.’’

Hercules striker David Trezeguet is considering a move back to the French league next season because he wants to win trophies again.Trezeguet has scored 11 league goals in the Spanish top flight for struggling Hercules, which is in the relegation zone with six matches remaining.“A return to France is possible,’’ Trezeguet told L’Equipe television late Thursday. “Sentimentally, I love Monaco. But other clubs have more

ambition, like Lyon. It is an ambitious club that looks to win trophies. That’s what I want to rediscover.’’The 33-year-old Trezeguet played for Monaco for five seasons

before joining Juventus in 2000, having scored the Golden Goal winner for France in the European Championship final against Italy. He went on to score 138 goals in 245 league games for Juventus, forming a prolific partnership with Alessandro Del Piero, before joining Hercules at the start of this season. He scored 34 goals in 71 appear-ances for France, but fell out with former coach Raymond Dome-nech.

Madrid gets replica after cup flattened by bus

David Trezeguet eyeing move back to France

PSG defender Christophe Jallet

signs new contract

Real Madrid put a replica of the Copa del Rey trophy on display at its stadium after the original was crushed under the team bus amid the celebrations of its 1-0 final victory over Barcelona. The replacement is on display at the club’s trophy museum inside the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. The owner of the Madrid jewelers that made the trophy provided a replica.“I always make a spare in case something unexpected happens, lest (King Juan Carlos) be left with nothing to give out. The spare has been ready for a long time,” Federico Alegre told daily newspaper El Mundo on Friday. The “something” happened in the early hours of Thursday morn-ing in Madrid when defender Sergio Ramos lost his grip on the 33-pound trophy and dropped it from the top of the team bus, which ran over the cup.Emergency services gathered up the pieces and put them inside the bus after it stopped.“It was a fall of five meters, a bus ran over it, it has lost pieces, the base is destroyed and the rest is dented,” said Alegre, who would attempt to repair the badly dam-aged original. “I am not sad or even angry. These things happen, it will be another anecdote to be told in the future.”

On-loan Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani says his future “is simple’’ and that he wants to stay with Italian giant Juventus.Aquilani joined Juventus on loan before the start of the season after an injury-disrupted year with Liverpool. The 26-year-old has returned to form and regained his place in the Italy national team.“The situation is simple, it all depends on Juve,’’ Aquilani told Friday’s edition of the Gazzetta dello Sport. “If the club wants me, it can buy me. I would like to stay in Turin for some time and win a lot of things.“I have played consistently this season, without any major dif-ficulties. It is fair to say I’ve overcome my problems.’’The 26-year-old Aquilani scored one goal in 18 appearances for Liverpool after joining from Roma in 2009 and reports in Italy say Juventus will need to pay 16 million euros ($23 million) if it wants to make his move permanent.Juventus is one point outside the Europa League qualification places and eight away from a Champions League spot. This season, the twice European champion crashed out of the Europa League at the group stage, having drawn all six of its matches.Despite coach Luigi del Neri coming under pressure following Juventus’ mixed season, Aquilani is confident that the club’s core of young Italian players can help restore success to the club.“You need a bit of time to build things up as Inter Milan showed,’’ Aquilani said. “We just need a bit of patience, but pretty soon Juve will get back to where it should be. The founda-tions are solid and we are starting a winning cycle. I want to be a big part of that.’’

Paris Saint-Germain defender Christophe Jallet has signed a new contract with the French club until 2015.PSG announced the deal on its website on Friday, saying the 27-year-old right-back had

extended his existing contract by two years.Jallet, who joined from Lorient two seasons ago, is the latest PSG player to sign a contract extension.

Midfielder Clement Chantome agreed a new deal until 2015 on Thursday, while last month, highly rated defender Mamadou Sakho signed a new contract until 2014.PSG is in fourth place in the French league and trails leader Lille by seven points with seven matches remaining. PSG also plays Lille in the French Cup final next month.

Major League Soccer says the Los Angeles Galaxy will make the decision on whether to attempt to re-sign David Beckham based on football ability and not his celebrity status.MLS President Mark Abbott said “there have been so many benefits’’ to the league’s having acquired Beckham. He is in the final season of a five-year, $32.5 million contract. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder turns 36 next month, and has been criticized for leaving the Galaxy twice on loan to AC Milan. He missed most of the 2010 season after tearing an Achilles’ tendon while playing in Italy.Beckham will travel next week to London for the royal wedding on April 29. The Galaxy play at Dallas on May 1, but Abbott said the league doesn’t have an issue with his schedule.

Barcelona defender Adriano will be sidelined for four weeks after injuring his leg in the Copa del Rey final on Wednesday.Adriano tore a muscle in his right thigh in the final minutes of his team’s 1-0 loss to Real Madrid. The club says the Brazilian left back will miss the rest of the Spanish league season, but could return for the Champions League final if Barcelona knocks out Madrid in the semifinals. His absence will put extra strain on Barcelona’s already thin defensive line, which has lost Eric Abidal to cancer surgery.

Former European player of the year Oleh Blokhin was appointed coach of Ukraine for the second time on Thursday.Ukraine’s football federation announced that Blokhin, who won the 1975 Ballon d’Or, will replace interim coach Yuri Kalitvintsev.“I perfectly realize the amount of responsibility I am supposed to bear, particularly considering that it’s Ukraine that will host Euro 2012,’’ Blokhin said of Poland’s co-host for the 2012 European Championship.Blokhin coached Ukraine to the quarterfinals of the 2006 World Cup but left after the team failed to qualify for the 2008 European Championship.

He was one of the world’s most prolific strikers in the 1970s, scoring 211 goals for Dynamo Kiev and 42 for the Soviet Union.Blokhin has also coached Olympiakos, AEK Athens and PAOK among other clubs.

West Ham striker Carlton Cole has been fined 20,000 pounds and was warned about his tweets regard-ing England’s friendly with Ghana. The FA announced the punishment on Wednesday after a hearing with England’s Cole, who had earlier admitted to a charge of improper conduct over the offending comments published on social networking site Twitter.Cole, while watching England’s 1-1 friendly draw with Ghana on March 29, tweeted: “Immigration has surrounded the Wembley premises! I knew it was a trap! Hahahaha.”“The only way to get out safely is to wear an England jersey and paint your face w/ the St. George’s flag!”He later deleted the offending remarks but not before they were brought to the attention of the FA, who subsequently charged the 27-year-old.The punishment is twice as much as Ryan Babel was fined earlier in the season, after the former Liverpool striker tweeted a mocked-up picture of referee Howard Webb in a Manchester United shirt.

Adriano ruled out for five months

Brazil and Germany arrange charity game

Roma supporters attack car of Jeremy Menez

Brazilian striker Adriano has ruptured his left Achilles tendon and will need surgery that will sideline him for five months. The former Inter Milan and Roma striker was hurt during a light practice session on Tuesday, and doctors sched-uled surgery for Wednesday.Adriano signed for Corinthians in March and had been recovering from a shoulder injury. He was expected to make his debut with the Sao Paulo club in May at the start of the Brazilian league. The 29-year-old striker played in the 2006 World Cup but missed last year’s tournament in South Africa despite leading Flamengo to the national league title the year before.

Qatar will host a charity match featuring stars from the 2002 World Cup final between Brazil and Germany to ben-efit the victims of the Japanese tsunami and earthquake.Brazilian great Cafu and the Qatar Football Association announced the plans late Tuesday during a visit the former defender was making to the country that will host the 2022 World Cup.Cafu said the December exhibition would feature the 2002 World Cup players against a team of international stars. He said the rosters have yet to be finalized, but said none of the players will be paid to appear.Cafu was part of three Brazilian World Cup campaigns and said he wanted to do something to help the victims of the March 11 disaster that left 27,000 reported dead or missing.

A group of Roma supporters let out their frustrations after the club’s first leg Coppa Italia semi final defeat to Inter by damaging the car of playmaker Jeremy Menez, according to La Corriere dello Sport. The former Italian champions lost the encounter 1-0 at the Olympico in Rome courtesy of a Dejan Stankovic goal, and it now appears increasingly likely that the club will end the season trophyless. The windscreen of Menez’s car was smashed with stones as the France international left the stadium after the defeat but fortunately Menez was left unscathed from the incident. Police are investigating the attack with the former Monaco winger looking to press charges against the unknown thugs. Roma is currently in a poor run of form, having won only one of its last five games. Me-nez, in particular, has been criticized by some supporters. The club are back in Serie A action on Saturday where it will be looking to return to win-ning ways against Chievo, as Vincenzo Montella’s men attempt to qualify for the Champi-ons League next season.

Police warn of more parcel bombsScottish police investigating a series of parcel bombs sent to people

associated with the historically-Roman Catholic soccer club Celtic were frantically searching Thursday for two more de-

vices thought to be somewhere in the mail network, Sky News reported, citing sources.

Three potential witnesses were also being asked to come forward by the police investigating the “despicable and

cowardly” attacks.Police said Wednesday that two potentially lethal

parcel bombs were sent to Neil Lennon -- the man-ager of Celtic -- in the attacks targeting the club, its

players and supporters. The bombs, which contained liquid explosives

and nails, were intercepted before they reached the offices of the soccer coach.

Two other devices were sent to lawyer Paul McBride -- who has represented both the

club and Lennon -- and to lawmaker Trish Godman, a member of the Scot-

tish parliament and a high-profile supporter of the club.

Police investigating the attacks believe they are linked to the

long and troubled history of sectarianism associated with

Celtic, a staunchly Roman Catholic club, and its old

rival Rangers, which is equally staunchly Prot-

estant.

Houllier spends night in hospitalAston Villa manager Gerard Houllier is recovering in hospi-tal after being taken ill on Houllier is in a comfortable condi-tion and has already spoken this morning with Villa’s chief executive Paul Faulkner. But he could be kept in hospital for a few days and assistant boss Gary McAl-lister is likely to be in charge for Saturday’s home Premier League clash with Stoke.McAllister will also take charge of training at Bodymoor Heath. Villa are making no official comment at this stage but are set to release a statement later on Houllier’s condition. The 63-year-old had open heart surgery in October 2001, while manager of Liverpool, after suffering chest pains during a match against Leeds.Following the open heart surgery, Houllier returned to full-time management with the Reds five months later, but parted company with the club in 2004.He then had a spell with Lyon before returning to full-time management with Villa in September as Martin O’Neill’s suc-cessor.When he took the position at Villa, Houllier revealed he had con-sulted his heart surgeon before accepting the job.He said he had returned to speak to Dr Abbas Rashid, the man who led the team who performed an 11-hour operation on the Frenchman, and was given a clean bill of health.“When you go into a job you know there will be pressure, that it will be hard work and you won’t sleep every night,” said Houllier at the time.“You need to make sure your body is ready. I have checked that. I am much healthier and fitter now than I was before.”Houllier has come under fire from Villa fans on a couple of occasions this sea-son and sections of them have called for him to be sacked. But results have improved in recent weeks with Villa climbing into the top half of the Premier League.

Congratulations & Thank you,

I am pleased to share that we have ended a successful year with our pilot program. This would have not been possible without the students’ willingness to be challenged, the parent’s commitment, the community’s ongoing support, nor the schools participation. STARS Project was a challenging idea that I started with the high school students, and their motivation and faith in themselves gave me the courage to bring it to life. I thank them for giving our community an opportunity to believe in our children, and making our idea a reality. Our students from the high school to the middle school have had a challenging year, but nonetheless, a rewarding year. There have been a great number of extraordinary people that have made STARS Project possible, and we will continue giving our community students opportunities to reach their potential in educa-tion. We will also continue partnering up with programs, organizations and schools to provide our students the support that they need to be successful. We have had incredible board members to move STARS Project to where it has been to succeed. There are five extraordinary ladies; Ana Castillo, Juanita Mora, Leticia Madrigal, Qetsyia Y’israel and Sonia Soto. Thanks to these incredible ladies, along with the superior staff our students have believed in themselves unconditionally. As we close our successful first year with STARS Project, we would like to share with you that one of our amazing tutor/ mentor was awarded the Bill Gates Scholarship. This scholarship will cover his education expense to any university that our student chooses to attend. He will be allowed to renew his opportunity annually throughout his education as long as he maintains the awarded scholarship requirements. Congratulations to Luis Cabrales, he is a shining STAR, along with the other tutors/ mentors. Luis, Felipe, Evelyn and Eduardo are four of our STARS tutors that will be graduating to continue shining. Join us on our next fund raiser to show our stu-dents that their education is important. It will be MAY 26 on THURSDAY from 5:30pm – 8:30pm. Come and have a great time while you are sup-porting our children’s education.
