Building a Better association through communication

What is “Virtual Estate” Planning? There’s a piece of the overall estate planning process that few think about or may even be aware of: planning the handling of their “virtual estate.”

If you’re part of the majority of Americans who use the Internet for everything from banking to shopping to socializing, you have a virtual estate, because these activities require digital accounts complete with a user name and password.

If something should happen to you, what happens to your digital accounts? Who has access? If your family wants to preserve or download the content, will they be able to? Would you want them to? Even with your user IDs and passwords, accessing a deceased person’s online accounts may violate service agreements or state or federal law. Today, only seven states have passed laws related to digital assets.

Currently, you do have a few ways to plan for your heirs’ access to your virtual estate.

Check website policies. Some automatically close or delete inactive accounts. Others disable an account upon request by the family or executor.

Compile a list of user names and passwords. Then store on a flash drive or print, and keep in a safe place. Don’t include this informa-tion in your will, since a will becomes public record during probate.

Leave instructions. While there’s no guarantee your heirs or execu-tor will be able to follow them, make your wishes known on how you would like each account handled.

Commercial digital asset services. These service companies often allow you to name a designated beneficiary to whom your account information will be released upon proof of your death.

Taking time to consider your virtual estate now can save your loved ones significant time and frustration later. This article provided courtesy of Federated Mutual Insurance Company, your association’s recommended insurer for property & casualty.

The Many Faces of BMSA: Meet Your Fellow MembersIn each issue of TimberTalk, we feature members to help you get to know the many faces of your Association.

Ted Smith – Smith MillworkTell us about your company. The family business was started by my great grandfather in 1905. G.W. Smith Lumber Company is still oper-ated today by my cousin Mark Smith. Smith Millwork, Inc. was established in April of 1979 as a manufacturer of custom mouldings and door jambs. Soon after, we began to distribute lineal mouldings, door slabs and door components in North and South Carolina. Over the past 37 years, we have grown to be a manufacturer of thousands of custom moulding and door jamb profiles as well as a distributor of a wide variety of interior and exterior building products to the Carolinas and surrounding areas.

What is your current role/responsibility at the company? Pres-ident and CEO.

How and when did you become involved with your company? I began working summers on the yard when I was 14 years old. Af-ter graduating college, I came into the business full time beginning in 1991 and have been here ever since.

What do you like most about your job? What do you like least? I enjoy the people in this industry and the relationships with employees, customers, and competitors that I have formed over the years. I don’t enjoy dealing with people that put themselves in bad situations that have to be dealt with.

Where are you from? Where did you grow up and go to school? I’m born, raised and reside in Lexington, NC. I attend-ed Lexington Senior High School. After graduation, I attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where I majored in business.

What are your favorite books and movies? With two children, I don’t have much time to read. I mostly keep up with industry and investment news. My favorite movies are comedies and the list is very long.

What are you most proud of? My family, our 111-year heritage of being in business, and being able to give back to our community. I am also very proud of our employees who work so hard to make us successful; and our loyal customers who make it all possible.

How would you like to be remembered? As a good, honest and loyal friend, father and husband.

What are your pet peeves (in other words, the things that bug you the most)? Rude, inconsiderate people and bad traffic.

Building a Better association through communication

What are you most proud of? My wife and my children.

How would you like to be remembered? For making a positive influence in people’s lives.

What are your pet peeves (in other words, the things that bug you the most)? Excuses and when someone starts a sentence with “to tell you truth” or “to be honest with you!”

Tell us about your family. I have a beautiful wife named Lau-rie and four boys. The oldest, Caleb, is a junior at the College of Charleston, Josh is a senior at Easley High and the twins, Jackson and Caden, are in first grade.

What is your favorite vacation location and why? Sunset Beach, NC. We’ve spent every summer as a family there and I have a lot of great memories.

What is your favorite way to unwind after a hard day? I enjoy hopping in the golf cart and taking the twins golfing. We spend a great deal of time together on the course.

Based on what you’ve learned in your career, what advice would you give a young person entering the building products industry today? That this doesn’t have to be just a “starter” job; it can be a long-term career. Listen and learn; you’ll find your seat. To get involved in your community and industry and to be a positive influence to those around you.

What does belonging to BMSA mean to you? How have you & your company benefitted from membership in BMSA? By remaining a constant source of information to assist my company on every level, BMSA has delivered me the tools to successfully manage. Through roundtable networking with other member deal-ers and the continuous training provided by BMSA our employees are confident in our growth. Additionally, it’s comforting to know the association remains a legislative watchdog on issues that could damage the success of our business on a local or national level.

Tell us about your family. My wife Nina & I have been married for 19 years. We have a 14-year-old son, Griff, and a 12-year-old daughter, Claire.

If you have pets, tell us about them. We have a funny, little mutt named Scout.

What is your favorite vacation location and why? I love the beach and ocean! Put me on any beach that is not crowded and I’m happy. My favorite place other than the beach is Sedona, AZ. It is absolutely beautiful and a great place to hike.

What is your favorite way to unwind after a hard day? Just being outside when the weather is nice. I like working around the house in the yard doing small projects.

Based on what you’ve learned in your career, what advice would you give a young person entering the building products industry today? Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions if you are not sure of something. It’s better to ask questions and get it right the first time because builders usually don’t have time for mistakes and mistakes cost everybody money.

What does belonging to BMSA mean to you? How have you & your company benefitted from membership in BMSA? BMSA provides so much industry information as long as you get involved and take advantage of the many things offered. You can gain a tremendous amount of knowledge through educational seminars, reading newsletters, attending roundtable meetings and the annual product show. I have formed more relationships than I can count over my 24 years of being an involved member of BMSA.

Todd Merriss – Dixie LumberTell us about your company. Dixie Lumber was established in 1943 and is a full service lumber yard in Easley, SC, serving all of the Upstate area.

What is your current role/responsibility at the company? I serve as the Vice President and General Manager.

How and when did you become involved with your company? In 2006, at the SBMA show in High Point, Larry Adams asked me if I was interested in relocating to a lumber dealer in South Carolina. The owners, Mac and C.E. Lawton (brothers), were wanting to develop an ESOP as an exit strategy for the both of them. They desired to sell the company to the employees and asked me to join them in their efforts. Shortly after I accepted the offer and joined the company in July of 2006.

What do you like most about your job? I enjoy the relationships that are developed with the customers and our employees. I truly enjoy coming to work and making a difference within our community.

Where are you from? I was born and raised in Noblesville, IN but moved to Cary, NC in the middle of High School. I attended Apex High School my Junior and Senior Year. After High School I studied at NC State University where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management.

A shooting by a disgruntled former employee leaves two young people dead. A chef is stabbed in the back by a co-worker while working in a restaurant kitchen. Yes, such events, even in industries deemed to be safe industries, do in fact occur.

An often-overlooked fact about workplace violence is that when it occurs, litigation quickly follows. Employers would be wise to antic-ipate the first question asked in the aftermath: What background checks were conducted on the perpetrator?

How will YOU answer? • We don’t do background checks.

• We can’t afford to do background checks.

• We conduct a standard background check for every employee.

• (the best answer) You provide a response from a position of strength, able to show that you are a responsible, not negligent, employer that conducts thorough and tailored background checks.

Welcome Back to the BMSA Family: Christmas Lumber, Knoxville, TN, Danville Feed & Supply, Danville, OH and Epicor Software, Dublin, CA.

Employers must understand that if or when one of their employees hurts another employee(s) or customer, they likely will be responsi-ble for the injuries (or worse). There are ways to protect the com-pany from also being found negligent in their hiring and retention practices:

1. Set goals in terms of providing a safe workplace.

2. Set a budget that shows your commitment level.

3. Research background screening companies to determine the best provider to support your safe-workplace goals.

4. Develop a background screening policy that complies with federal and state laws.

Zuni Corkerton is the Founder and President of RefCheck® Information Services, a human-resources-based firm that focuses on providing in-depth background screen-ing services. To learn more about RefCheck’s services, contact Zuni at 800-510-4010, x.12 or [email protected].
